Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated researcher workflow sweeps to continue when individual sources fail.
    • Web, news, and academic searches now skip terminal source errors instead of failing the workflow.
    • Removed the automatic retry behavior for these sweep steps.

…ut sweeps

A fan-out step's terminal failure only fails the whole workflow when it
lands in the engine's failed set; error_mode=retry's exhaustion does
that even though every downstream step still runs fine on the partial
output (are_dependencies_satisfied treats a skipped dependency the
same as a completed one). Confirmed live: a single sweep timing out
failed the entire run despite fact-check/follow-up/report all
completing on the partial source set. error_mode=skip converts the
same terminal failure into a Skip instead, so one slow/flaky source
degrades the report gracefully rather than failing the whole run.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The researcher workflow now uses error_mode: "skip" for web, news, and academic fan-out sweeps. The test documentation explains how skipped failures differ from exhausted retries and affect downstream dependencies.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 858ed

This PR updates the workflow example test behavior; the remaining concern is limited to optional failure-path regression coverage and does not demonstrate a current correctness or production-impact issue. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a failure-path regression test for the fan-out modes.

mock_send always returns Ok, so this test never exercises a terminal fan-out failure. It would also pass if these steps reverted to error_mode: "retry". Add a failing fan-out invocation and assert that the workflow remains WorkflowStatus::Completed, downstream collection and reporting run, and successful results remain available.
