Summary

Reproduced live twice in one PM-mode session (items #192, #173): handoff onto an item still carrying dispatched from a prior attempt only ever added ready-for-work — it never cleared the stale label. run_discovery_tick's own downstream claim-liveness gate then treated the item as still spoken for, so the fresh handoff silently did nothing until someone remembered to call item(action="redispatch") instead, which already does the right thing (crates/agentflare-backend/src/item/claim.rs::redispatch).

Follow-up to item #197 (dead-claim/orphan pattern investigation).

Changes

  • REDISPATCH_CLEARED_LABELS (dispatched, needs-manual-dispatch) made pub and reused rather than duplicated.
  • handoff_impl's existing-item_id branch now clears those labels unconditionally before the existing live-claim check, which still gates the actual ready-for-work re-attach unchanged. A plain handoff onto an already-dispatched item now behaves the same as redispatch, instead of requiring the caller to know which tool to reach for.

Test plan

  • New test: an_explicit_item_id_handoff_clears_a_stale_dispatched_label_from_a_prior_cycle — reproduces the exact bug (seeds a dispatched label, hands off again, asserts it's cleared and ready-for-work is re-attached)
  • cargo test --bin agentflare -- mcp_server::handoff:: — 12 passed, 0 failed
  • cargo test -p agentflare-backend -- item:: — 59 passed, 0 failed
  • cargo build --bin agentflare, cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy --bin agentflare -p agentflare-backend all clean on touched files

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Explicit item handoffs now clear stale dispatch-related labels before re-queuing.
    • Re-queued items receive the appropriate ready-for-work status only after meeting claim and state requirements.
    • Improved handling of items affected by previous dispatch attempts.

…e redispatch does

Reproduced live twice in one PM-mode session (items #192, #173): handoff
onto an item still carrying `dispatched` from a prior attempt only ever
*added* ready-for-work, never cleared the stale label. run_discovery_tick's
own downstream claim-liveness gate then treated the item as still spoken
for, so the fresh handoff silently did nothing until someone remembered
to call item(action="redispatch") instead.

handoff now clears REDISPATCH_CLEARED_LABELS (now pub, reused from
item::claim::redispatch) unconditionally on an existing-item_id handoff,
before the existing live-claim check that still gates the ready-for-work
re-attach. A plain handoff onto an already-dispatched item now behaves
the same as redispatch, instead of requiring the caller to know which
tool to reach for.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Explicit item handoffs now clear stale dispatch labels before re-queueing. The shared cleared-label constant is public, and a regression test verifies that ready-for-work returns after the handoff.

REDISPATCH_CLEARED_LABELS is publicly exported and documents its use for redispatch and handoff label cleanup.
Explicit handoff reset and regression test
src/mcp_server/handoff.rs
Explicit item handoffs clear stale dispatched and needs-manual-dispatch labels before claim checks and ready-for-work restoration. The regression test verifies stale-label removal and readiness restoration.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c0e51

The handoff path now removes stale dispatch labels, but failures during lookup or removal can still leave an item blocked from fresh work while reporting success. The change is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up to propagate these cleanup errors.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate label cleanup errors.

If label lookup or removal fails, this code continues and can report a successful handoff while dispatched or needs-manual-dispatch remains attached. The downstream claim gate can then ignore the fresh handoff again. Return these errors, as redispatch does, before continuing.

…'s update-branch API (#630)

Follow-up to the review-sweep BEHIND friction hit repeatedly this
session (PRs #621, #623, #627 all needed a manual git merge
origin/master before they could merge). run_review_sweep now checks
PrCiStatus::Behind (GitHub's own mergeable_state == "behind" -- mergeable,
no conflict, just missing base-branch commits) before ever fetching CI
check runs for that PR, and calls pulls::update_branch (the same
server-side operation the PR page's own "Update branch" button
triggers) to bring it current, letting CI re-run naturally.

Entirely server-side: no local worktree/git state touched, so it can't
race a concurrently-dispatched job still pushing to the same branch the
way a local git merge would.
