The update path merges object patches into current metadata, removes keys set to null, and rejects invalid or non-object patches. Tests cover partial and successive updates, JSON-string patches, invalid input, and preservation of plan-transition fields. The ItemRequest.metadata description documents these update semantics. |

The title names the main change: partial item
metadataupdates replaced the whole object, which dropped size, task_type, and plan keys. The changeset fixes this by merging supplied keys initem_update_inand addingitem_metadatahelpers. The title is specific and accurate. Its prefixchore:does not match the change, which is a bug fix. The title is long (119 characters), which reduces readability but does not make it unrelated or vague.

Normalize stored metadata before merging.
merge_metadata_patch treats a JSON-string-wrapped stored object as {}. An update such as {"task_type":"bugfix"} can therefore discard existing keys such as size and pr when the result replaces the metadata column.
Normalize current_metadata before the update merge. Add a regression test for a double-encoded stored object.

Partial item metadata updates previously replaced the entire stored object, dropping unrelated size, task, PR, and plan fields. Updates now merge supplied keys and delete only keys explicitly sent as JSON null, before restoring server-controlled approval fields. Create behavior is preserved. Other direct metadata writers were audited and already preserve existing keys.
Metadata implementation:
eff15f0b. Verification follow-up:5edaa1a0.The follow-up isolates the dashboard SSE snapshot test with the existing temporary-home helper. Its first snapshot previously scanned the user's real Claude transcript history through the cost rollup. The original test reproduced a 10-second first-frame timeout (exit 101, 11.01s total); the same binary with an empty home passed in 0.53s. After the fixture change, a fresh build and exact targeted Cargo test passed in 0.68s. The 10-second deadline and payload assertions are unchanged.
Current verification:

An isolated foregroundmbx +1.98.1 test --workspace --target-dir targetretry escaped that lock but failed during dependency compilation when disk free space reached zero (PowerShell ResourceUnavailable: not enough space on disk; no reliable numeric child exit code). No tests ran in either retry. The stopped isolated run's newly created local target directory was removed after verifying its path and that it was not a reparse point; this recovered only 28 MiB. The earlier ten-minute diagnostic build attempt was also cancelled (exit 130), not passed.Historical local workspace evidence: the earlier serial

The new metadata tests cover double-encoded incoming patches, not those legacy stored rows; that compatibility edge remains for separate assessment.
