feat(cpm): add ReportProcfsExec to capture pre-existing processes with argv boundaries - #1006
Whether the agent records a container's entrypoint or early child process depended on whether Inspektor Gadget tracepoints attached before the container ran it. When monitoring attached slightly after start, early exec events were permanently missed from the learned ContainerProfile.
An exec that already happened cannot be replayed, but the process it started is usually still running:
Procfs learning feed: ProcfsEvent is now routed to ContainerProfileManager.ReportProcfsExec(containerID, path, argv).
Preserve argv element boundaries: ProcfsEvent and ProcessEvent now preserve Argv []string directly from /proc/<pid>/cmdline NUL-delimited elements instead of joining and splitting on whitespace.
Deduplication against observed execs: The same hash identifier is used as observed exec events, so a process observed both ways is recorded once and neither source shadows the other.
Extracted from entlein's hardened batch.
Testing
Added unit tests in pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/procfs_exec_test.go covering:
Recording processes never seen starting
Deduplicating observed execs
Preserving distinct argv entries
Preserving whitespace within arguments across element boundaries
All tests pass cleanly.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Process profiles now include executables discovered through procfs, including their command-line arguments. Duplicate reports are consolidated, while different argument lists remain distinct.
Bug Fixes
Procfs events with ambiguous container attribution are no longer assigned to a specific container. Initial process scans deliver events without loss when consumers are briefly behind.

📝 Walkthrough
Walkthrough
Procfs events now carry executable paths and argument lists through the process pipeline. The tracer identifies ambiguous container attribution, and the profile manager records eligible executions while avoiding duplicate entries.
Execution hashes now encode the path and each argument as separate length-prefixed values. Tests cover updated hashes and distinct argument boundaries.
Capture and deliver procfs process data pkg/processtree/feeder/procfs_feeder.go, pkg/processtree/feeder/procfs_feeder_test.go, pkg/processtree/conversion/types.go, pkg/processtree/conversion/convert.go, pkg/ebpf/events/procfs.go
The feeder copies arguments into process events and uses blocking delivery for the initial scan. Process conversion and procfs events carry arguments; procfs events also include an ambiguity flag.
Attribute and route procfs events pkg/containerwatcher/v2/tracers/procfs.go, pkg/containerwatcher/v2/tracers/procfs_test.go, pkg/containerwatcher/v2/event_handler_factory.go, pkg/containerwatcher/v2/event_handler_factory_procfs_test.go
The tracer copies arguments, enables for runtime detection or application profiling, and marks network-namespace fallback attribution as ambiguous. The profile adapter reports only unambiguous procfs events.
Record procfs-discovered executions pkg/containerprofilemanager/containerprofile_manager_interface.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/containerprofile_manager_mock.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/event_reporting.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/procfs_exec_test.go
The manager records non-empty paths and arguments, avoids duplicate entries, and adds profile size only for new executions. Tests cover report ordering, argv distinctions, and ignored reports.

The test calls ReportProcfsExec twice. It does not call ReportFileExec, so it tests repeated procfs reports, not deduplication between an observed exec and a procfs report.
Call ReportFileExec with a matching event before ReportProcfsExec. Then assert that the profile contains one entry. Remove the unused args variable and the redundant d.execs = nil setup.

- Encode argv with length-prefixes in CalculateSHA256FileExecHash to prevent boundary collisions
- Add collision regression tests in utils and CPM
- Test cross-source exec deduplication between ReportFileExec and ReportProcfsExec
This registration is unreachable in application-profile-only deployments: ProcfsTracer.IsEnabled currently requires EnableRuntimeDetection, while the container profile manager and exec learning are enabled by EnableApplicationProfile (the repository's default configuration even has application profiles enabled and runtime detection disabled). As a result, the advertised recovery of missed entrypoints does not run for the primary profile-learning mode. Enable the procfs tracer for application-profile learning as well and update its IsEnabled test.
- Pass pe.Argv directly in event handler without strings.Fields fallback
- Enable ProcfsTracer when EnableApplicationProfile is true
- Update ProcfsTracer IsEnabled test cases
…container attribution (5399752910)
- Add AmbiguousContainer flag to ProcfsEvent when falling back to network namespace
- Skip procfs exec reporting in EventHandlerFactory when attribution is ambiguous
- Add multi-container shared-netns regression test in ProcfsTracer
- Add EventHandlerFactory regression test for ambiguous procfs event filtering
This deduplicates accounting only when the observed exec arrives first. If procfs inserts the hash first and ReportFileExec later observes the same path/argv, that method overwrites the same map key but unconditionally returns size.Of(exec), so withContainer counts the entry twice and can trigger a premature profile split/TooLarge transition. Preserve the observed-event enrichment/overwrite behavior, but have ReportFileExec return zero size when the hash already exists; add the reverse-order case to the regression test.
Initial procfs scan can miss pre-existing processes
pkg/containerwatcher/v2/tracers/procfs.go:112
Enabling this tracer for application profiling does not reliably deliver the initial procfs snapshot: ProcfsTracer.Start starts feedLoop before calling Subscribe, and feedLoop immediately runs scanProcfs. If that scan broadcasts before the subscription wins the lock, all pre-existing processes are dropped; the next chance is the default 30-second scan, so shorter-lived early children—the behavior this change targets—remain missing. Subscribe the event channel before starting the feeder, or add explicit startup synchronization.
…ordering (5399778606)
- Return 0 size delta in ReportFileExec when exec entry was already inserted by procfs
- Test reverse arrival order and size accounting in procfs_exec_test
- Subscribe to procfs feeder before starting it in ProcfsTracer.Start to avoid missing initial scan
…ssure (5399802886)
- Run initial procfs scan with backpressure to prevent dropping events when subscribers' buffers fill
- Start processEvents consumer before procfsFeeder in ProcfsTracer.Start
- Release feeder mutex before sending events to subscribers
- Add regression test in procfs_feeder_test verifying backpressure delivery across small channel buffers
Assert the full expected event set from a controlled procfs fixture.
The count >= 5 assertion only proves that five events arrived. Since the test drains the capacity-1 channel continuously, a regression to non-blocking initial delivery can still pass when the consumer receives five events before later sends are dropped. Assert every expected PID from a fixed process set to protect the lossless-delivery guarantee.

🟡 Changes recommended
Initial scans can still lose events downstream, and unresolved attribution and startup lifecycle paths can produce incorrect profiles or leaked consumers.
Clean up consumer and subscription when feeder startup fails
pkg/containerwatcher/v2/tracers/procfs.go:75
Starting the consumer before the fallible feeder initialization leaks it when procfsFeeder.Start returns an error: processEvents waits on the caller context indefinitely, and the feeder has no unsubscribe operation. Retrying also appends another subscriber/consumer, so subsequent events are dispatched twice. Please make subscription/consumer startup transactional (or add rollback/unsubscribe) so a failed Start leaves no goroutine or subscriber behind while retaining initial-scan backpressure.
This issue also appears on line 182 of the same file.
Prevent concurrent feed loops during rapid Stop/Start
pkg/processtree/feeder/procfs_feeder.go:141
Restart is still racy here: ProcfsFeeder.Start launches feedLoop, but that goroutine reads the mutable pf.ctx only after it is scheduled, and ProcfsFeeder.Stop clears the running guard without waiting for the loop to exit. If Stop/Start happen before the old goroutine reaches ctx := pf.ctx, both old and new loops capture the new context and run this initial scan plus all periodic scans concurrently. Pass the per-start context into feedLoop and join the previous loop in Stop before allowing another start.
This does not always generate the same identifier as an observed exec. Observed argv still round-trips through an unescaped non-breaking-space delimiter (tracers/execoperator.go:57-60, utils/datasource_event.go:278-283), so an actual argument containing that character is split before ReportFileExec hashes it, while procfs hashes the original single argument here. Such a process is recorded twice and its argv boundary differs by source; the exec transport needs an escaping or length-aware representation before cross-source deduplication is reliable.
Stop does not wait for the event consumer to exit
pkg/containerwatcher/v2/tracers/procfs.go:101
Canceling the consumer context does not wait for processEvents to exit. Because its channel may still be buffered, the select can continue choosing the event case after cancellation, so Stop may return and a restart may begin while the old consumer is still dispatching stale events. Add a consumer wait group/done signal and join it during both Stop and startup-failure cleanup before allowing restart.
