Summary

  • Recover the exact Anthropic/Bedrock thinking-signature conversation-binding rejection on the reachable Responses HTTP paths: a structured HTTP 400, or an initial HTTP-200 stream error before output. Remove replayed signed/redacted thinking once and rebuild through the existing send-budget and pacing owner.
  • Share one request-scoped opaque-recovery guard across both paths. Preserve non-replayable failures, cancellation, exhausted budgets, output/tool-side-effect boundaries, and replacement error status/type/code. Close the rejected iterator before refetching.
  • Memoize only after a nonempty, delivery-validated successful terminal for the same thread and serving identity. HTTP 200, EOF, empty/incomplete output, failure, cancellation, or a changed identity cannot establish the memo. Cache keys and TTL remain unchanged.
  • Add real-adapter offline regression coverage, helper boundary tests, layout registrations, and provider/architecture documentation. The existing Anthropic signature predicate is reused. The hosted-search extension is described below. No runTurn, service-restart, or operational-observability changes are included.

Verification

  • Initial recovery commit official runner: Bun 1.4.3, bun scripts/test.ts with 11 explicit files: 247 passed, 0 failed, 1,770 assertions. This includes 23 real-adapter integration cases, 19 recovery-boundary cases, existing opaque/Azure/Fast recovery, direct client-encoder delivery, file-size/Lab/structure guards, and the complete layout tooling tests. External fetches were fail-closed; synthetic mocks and loopback fixture servers were permitted.
  • RED/GREEN: on unchanged dev, the initial 20-case integration suite had 11 expected failures and 9 passing controls. Cancellation during the durability wait and an empty validated fold after a stray tool-end each separately failed before their guards and passed afterward.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, and git diff --check passed on the initial recovery code; follow-up checks are listed below.
  • Documentation build passed: 577 pages and 81,203 checked internal links, with a temporary build home and telemetry disabled.
  • Broader official bun scripts/test.ts --changed=08bb2e485d56115d2ecd641a15659ff912b69d38 selected 16,030 tests across 671 files on the pre-final candidate: 15,689 passed, 39 skipped, 302 failed. It is not a passing check. One direct-delivery fixture lacked the newly required recovery owner; this PR now supplies it, and the final focused run includes that regression. Other observed failure groups include the fail-closed offline guard rejecting proxy-based fixtures, cascading spend-owner conflicts, NO_PROXY sandbox refusals, unsafe temporary-directory ownership, and lifecycle/timeouts. Remaining broad failures have not all been baseline-proven unrelated. At that initial stage this PR remained in draft pending broader validation; the later review-readiness exception is documented below. No full-suite pass is claimed.
  • Limited same-environment baseline comparisons reproduced 94 broad-run failures on both unchanged dev and this candidate: 66 bearer-auth, 27 management-auth, and one Claude OFF regression. The web-search file passed all 78 cases on both trees, so its original timeout did not reproduce. The remaining broad failures have not all been baseline-classified.
  • The supplied live probes were reviewed, not executed or counted as evidence: the buffered probe omits the response output it later reads and can exit successfully without reproducing; shared fixed thread IDs can also reuse a recovery memo. Offline tests use isolated state instead. No live Bedrock validation was performed.

Hosted-search follow-up

Extends the same Anthropic thinking-signature rejection policy to hosted-search model iterations. HTTP 400 and pre-output HTTP 200 SSE refusals share one request-wide recovery guard. Only the rejected iteration is rebuilt; completed searches, tool results, and history remain intact, and stripping persists into subsequent iterations.

The raw adapter-error seam preserves per-send replay safety before the progress collector converts failures to exceptions. Any semantic output, including hidden thinking and tool activity, or a replay-unsafe heartbeat prevents replay. Cancellation, body cleanup, pacing, fresh streamed-replacement header deadlines, structured failure identity, and non-replayable diagnostics remain guarded.

The physical repair uses the shared dispatch budget and settles direct/Combo/hop bookings once. Ordinary search admission is unchanged. Conservative limitation: recovery is disabled with enforced spend accounting because the existing direct-search lane cannot prove prior ordinary-send receipts. Explicit caller/Combo limits are never increased. A failed repair, including HTTP 429, is terminal rather than opening another recovery ladder.

Only a validated nonempty final completion can memoize; search cards and earlier search iterations cannot manufacture success. Cache keys and TTL are unchanged. No runTurn or other-provider recovery is added.

Validation

  • Same final 51-case integration file on pre-follow-up commit 015014504210e6b974454ffd8f59efb8551532a5: 17 pass, 34 fail (expected RED).
  • Hosted-search recovery commit focused official runner, Bun 1.4.3: 350 pass, 0 fail, 2,451 assertions across 17 files, including the previous 247 regressions.
  • Real Responses handler, Anthropic adapter, and hosted Exa search executor exercised with strict synthetic fetch fixtures. Unknown destinations throw; an additional offline preload blocks network fallback. No real model/account requests.
  • Includes HTTP/SSE recovery before and after completed searches, persistent stripping, cross-round one-shot guard, hidden-output/tool fences, direct/Combo exact accounting, real enforced-spend fail-closed behavior, cancellation, fresh replacement deadline, non-resolving old-body cancellation, default three-search/final-answer behavior, 429-to-signature-rejection sequencing, terminal error identity, and memo isolation.
  • Independent review additionally passed 5 adversarial cases with 22 assertions; these are separate from the 350-case focused set.
  • TypeScript no-emit, structure SSOT, privacy scan, layout mappings, file-size ratchet and whitespace checks passed.
  • Full repository suite was not rerun for this follow-up; verification is the targeted 17-file set. The earlier broad-suite failures remain disclosed above; remaining failures have not all been baseline-proven unrelated.
  • Uploaded live probes are not acceptance evidence: the nonstream probe omitted the output field it later inspected, and both probes reused a fixed thread identifier that could contaminate memo checks.

Systemic Anthropic search-history fidelity update

This follow-up fixes locally demonstrated ways hosted search changed the prefix bound by an Anthropic thinking signature. It supplements the bounded signature-rejection recovery already in this PR.

Source-backed causes and changes

  • Consecutive signature events are replacement snapshots, not separate thinking blocks. Keep the latest value while preserving genuine empty and distinct thinking-block boundaries.
  • Hosted search previously reconstructed each call as a separate assistant turn, lost assistant text and original argument fields, and split parallel calls. Preserve one original assistant response and its complete supported blocks in their original order, followed by the existing tool results.
  • Adapter events alone lose text-block boundaries, initial block content, citations and opaque fields. Capture validated original SSE blocks through private, request-local WeakMap ownership. No client field, public response event or persisted transcript schema can forge this metadata.
  • Empty-answer retries previously removed tools and changed generated system guidance. Keep the original effective advertised catalog and use tool_choice: none. The catalog honors allowed-tools restrictions and Opus 5.5's existing named-tool narrowing; it does not expand permissions.
  • Once a forced-answer instruction is sent, retain it once in its original message position. Moving or deleting it after another thinking/tool response changes the bound prefix.
  • A server-tool block could previously be invisible to replay-safety accounting. Fence recovery at every block start. Reject unknown/incomplete/malformed raw histories before executing a hosted search rather than silently rebuilding a lossy conversation.
  • Validate conforming, unique and non-colliding tool IDs before search execution. Do not perform a search and only discover during the next request build that preserving the ID is impossible.

Safety and behavior

Capture is enabled only for Anthropic hosted-search streams. It charges retained memory incrementally, validates ordered block/message completion and releases failed/cancelled attempts or finished loop ownership. Unsupported block/delta types now fail closed for search continuation. This deliberately changes behavior for previously ignored compatible-provider extensions: no automatic lossy fallback is attempted.

Search budgets, executed-search counts and failed-query suppression remain unchanged. Parallel calls remain grouped; completed searches are not replayed. A repeated successful query retains the pre-existing execution behavior, while repeating a failed query remains suppressed.

Validation

  • 77 tests / 546 assertions across the real-adapter search fixture and replay ownership unit fixture pass.
  • 18 related Anthropic/web-search test files run in isolated processes: 337 tests / 1,139 assertions pass.
  • Both layout guards: 27 tests / 568 assertions pass. New test registered in both layout mappings.
  • TypeScript no-emit check, structure SSOT check and diff whitespace checks pass.
  • Fixtures use synthetic providers/search responses; unmocked external fetches are blocked. No real model or user credentials were used.

Evidence and remaining boundaries

Official preserved-thinking guidance binds system, tools and prior messages, requires exact assistant-block order and excludes tool_choice from the bound prefix. Synthetic wire assertions demonstrate the old local mutations and the repaired prefixes. They do not identify the exact mutation in the user's original Opus/Bedrock request without its redacted final-wire transcript.

This does not establish a durable cross-request provenance model. The existing five-minute thread/serving-identity memo and TTL behavior remain unchanged and are not proof that opaque blocks belong to the current full prefix. General cross-request/event persistence, prefix rewrites outside this search loop, and unsupported provider blocks remain limitations. Manual extended-thinking recovery after stripping all thinking from a tool turn is a separately identified contract issue; these fidelity changes do not claim to resolve it or silently disable user-selected reasoning.

A full repository suite was not completed. A broad same-process directory run encountered existing account-fixture/module-mock contamination and was stopped; those results are not counted as passing. Focused files were rerun separately as reported above. No release, deployment or production restart was performed.

Prefix consistency for replayed Anthropic thinking

Extends existing ocxr1 reasoning payloads with optional versioned complete-block observations. The final Anthropic request supplies the effective system/tools/non-thinking prefix and an ordered opaque-block predecessor chain. Recognized same-scope mismatches can omit incompatible old blocks while preserving newly generated compatible thinking, including internal hosted-search continuations. Ambiguous lineage and manual-thinking tool continuations that cannot preserve required history fail before another send.

Request/Response ownership uses private weak metadata; complete thinking and redacted blocks acquire observations only at their block boundary. Hints are unkeyed consistency checks, never signature authentication, response-success evidence, retry authorization, or spend admission. Existing one-shot recovery and success-only memo conditions remain independent. Canonicalization preserves semantic cache_control fields in tool input/schema and ignores only actual protocol cache annotations. Request/frame temporaries use translation budgets with depth limits and cancellation cleanup.

Compatibility limits

  • Missing, malformed, unknown-version, or unknown-scope observations preserve the original legacy payload and policy; scope changes do not prove a signature invalid.
  • Client-facing thinking after text/tool output remains legacy because the current Responses conversion cannot preserve its original assistant-message grouping. Internal search snapshots preserve those shapes. Leading complete thinking/redacted blocks support hints.
  • Unsupported opaque extension fields remain legacy rather than receiving a false round-trip claim.
  • Without newly returned signed/redacted reasoning there is no portable omission marker. Legacy history and such recoveries can still encounter stale signatures after memo expiry/restart. No persistent key/database or client change is introduced.
  • Matching hashes are necessary consistency evidence only. They cannot establish Anthropic's undisclosed signing contract or prevent an untrusted client forging hints.
  • Synthetic cloud fixtures cover compressed and uncompressed histories; no assertion is made that the inaccessible user Mac failure has been reproduced with a real provider account.

Validation

The frozen results below supersede earlier validation stages. Coverage includes real adapter → bridge → parser → final wire replay, hosted-search private snapshots, changed prefixes/catalogs, append-only history, branches/scopes, restored configuration/cache state, selective old/new generations, malformed/unknown metadata, manual tool incompatibility, redacted EOF/error/cancellation and admission-denial ownership. Original uploaded model probes were not executed or used as passing evidence.

Earlier prefix-stage validation

Earlier local candidate (superseded before publication): 15339327c1dda12ff44644de198e399c2bf75832; tree: 32843febceaa332eb2c6d66e814f7f71f7bf202f.
Production commit: 6d6a4262e11a0f0a7ecd6ba9ad28bde7c9b3339a. Follow-up commit fixes three pre-existing PR fixture gaps (exact replay-unsafe heartbeat expectations, actual-adapter dispatch argument, extracted-owner inventory) without runtime changes.

  • Official Bun 1.4.3 focused runner: 199 passed, 1,506 assertions, seven files.
  • Official fixture regression runner: 41 passed, 480 assertions, three files.
  • Deferred-tool passthrough file: candidate and exact prior PR tree each 38 passed, 352 assertions.
  • New end-to-end prefix suite comprises 45 tests, included in the 199 above.
  • Independent prefix-stage review: 20 passed, 37 assertions. Independent search/canonical/retention review: 9 passed, 31 assertions.
  • TypeScript, structure consistency, privacy scan and diff checks pass. Layout guards previously passed 27 tests. Documentation build passed: 577 pages and 81,208 internal links.

A broad official changed run against 08bb2e485d56115d2ecd641a15659ff912b69d38 recorded 39,589 passed, 111 skipped, 831 failed and four errors across 40,531 tests / 1,858 files, with 612,598 assertions. It is failed mixed-snapshot diagnostic evidence, not final-tree validation: the pending-redacted accounting correction and its new regression landed while that process was active. The final frozen focused runs above pass. Exact prior/current per-file comparison identified 17 heartbeat fixture failures, one dispatch-mock API mismatch and one owner-inventory omission already present in the preceding PR tree; these are fixed by the follow-up commit and verified green. Deferred-tool failures did not reproduce in either isolated tree. Remaining broad-run failures are unclassified; no full-suite pass is claimed and no 40,000-test rerun was performed.

All model/search traffic in these checks is synthetic and strict-mocked with the offline preload; unmatched fetches fail rather than using real accounts. Restart coverage restores configuration and clears caches, not a separately launched service process.

Final blocker repair: selective successful-recovery memo

Superseding final commit: 260a1121be60e9d49f6e86e8b5b1210ef903327f; tree: 7632ece624d5ff2e9fec406a7b4a7c9a222fabf0.

A final adversarial check found the existing five-minute rejection memo still stripped newly returned valid thinking on the next request. Two actual-handler streaming/buffered tests reproduced this before the fix. The memo now optionally retains a complete bounded set of refused opaque payload fingerprints captured from the exact failed attempt's final wire body and transferred through its actual Response. Signed and redacted payload domains are separate; plaintext and untrusted prefix metadata do not change the refused-payload identity. This includes internally generated thinking added during later hosted-search iterations.

Successful recovery is still the only memo writer. Up to 256 fingerprints are merged with existing entries, charged against the existing 256 KiB cache budget and expired under the unchanged TTL/count limits. Unknown/partial/overflow capture and pre-existing blanket entries retain conservative blanket behavior. Per-turn capture charges 256 retained bytes per digest until normal budget disposal and temporarily reserves UTF-8 hashing space; partial failures refund only admitted ownership. No new persistent keys, storage or client protocol fields beyond the approved observation envelope are introduced.

On a selective memo hit, a previously refused signature/redacted payload cannot escape by changing its plaintext or forging a matching prefix hint. Unknown/legacy observations remain conservatively omitted. A different payload with a comparable observation must still pass final prefix, block and surviving-parent checks. Active memo hits cannot authorize another signature-recovery attempt. Failed/canceled attempts cannot install or widen the memo.

Frozen official evidence at this final tree:

  • Ten focused files: 306 passed, 2,798 assertions, zero failures.
  • Isolated sidecar dispatch fixture: one passed, nine assertions.
  • Includes 77 real-handler prefix/memo cases and 35 cache/capture cases.
  • TypeScript, structure, privacy and diff checks pass.
  • Independent memo review: 26 passed, 49 assertions, stable final commit/tree.
  • Independent search/capture-budget review: 11 passed, 51 assertions.

The earlier failed broad mixed-snapshot diagnostic remains disclosed above; no new broad/full-suite pass is claimed. This fix removes the newly discovered active-memo blanket-stripping gap, but does not create a durable omission marker for legacy histories or responses with no new reasoning.

Published commit: fffff66c4730d76163af24535f7e4b5c3cc6ed38; its tree matches the final frozen tree 7632ece624d5ff2e9fec406a7b4a7c9a222fabf0 exactly.

Current review-readiness validation (2026-10-15)

Final test-only update

  • Local HEAD: 38d5ff0b38b9c57fcde7e7866af1c49780964440
  • Tree: 0fa953c8aa6dafab21d4a09937f910cb3c9d5022
  • Published parent: fffff66c4730d76163af24535f7e4b5c3cc6ed38, tree 7632ece624d5ff2e9fec406a7b4a7c9a222fabf0, equal to local runtime baseline 260a1121.
  • Commit e8a9c43e: align the Umans streaming fixture with the exact replay-unsafe heartbeat, tool start, arguments, tool end and terminal sequence. Non-streaming assertions remain unchanged.
  • Commit 38d5ff0b: three synthetic Bedrock-wrapper regressions: upstream HTTP 400 with client streaming true/false, plus a classifier case. These are not new upstream-SSE generic-error tests. A generic signature-validation error alone stays terminal, preserves original opaque history, executes no search, and obtains no signature-recovery attempt. Only the existing two-phrase binding classifier authorizes that recovery. All request identifiers are fabricated.
  • No production-source differences from the published parent. No deployment or user-device validation is claimed.

Frozen broad comparison

Pinned Bun 1.4.3, official repository runner, unchanged strict offline preload, no lock bypass. Both broad runs preserve their before/after commit and tree. Candidate remained tracked-clean throughout.

Candidate 260a1121: official changed comparison against 08bb2e485d56115d2ecd641a15659ff912b69d38 selected 1,860 files, 40,608 tests: 39,723 passed, 111 skipped, 774 failed, four unhandled errors, 585,747 assertions; 460.3 seconds. This is a genuine failed fixed-snapshot run, unlike the prior day's mixed-snapshot diagnostic.

Clean base 08bb2e48: the same 1,853 common files were passed explicitly to the official runner. All appeared in the identical observed file order, with no extras. Seven new PR files do not exist at base and were necessarily excluded. Base: 40,354 tests, 39,472 passed, 111 skipped, 771 failed, three unhandled errors, 595,324 assertions; 407.1 seconds.

All 770 recoverable primary base failure records match candidate records by file and test name after normalizing seven clearly generated UUID names. Each log has one additional footer-count failure that cannot be attributed from primary records; it is not silently assigned a cause. Candidate has exactly three additional observable failures:

  1. Umans streaming fixture: base 12/12 passes; published candidate 11/12. The precise expectation fix above now passes all 12 tests with 57 assertions.
  2. CLI provider-qualified selector subprocess timeout: passed at base in the broad run; isolated candidate and base runs each pass the exact case (two assertions). The broad-run timing cause remains unresolved.
  3. JEV three-send reservation ladder timeout: passed at base in the broad run; isolated frozen candidate file passes all 34 cases and 224 assertions. Its delayed 503-versus-429 assertion accounts for the candidate's fourth unhandled error. The broad-run timing cause remains unresolved.

The other three unhandled errors are the same audio-close assertions in both runs. Shared failing names support a baseline comparison, not a claim that every underlying cause is proven environmental. No full-suite pass is claimed.

Final focused checks

At final 38d5ff0b:

  • Official focused run, 13 files: 348 passed, zero failed, 3,437 assertions. Includes original recovery, private search replay, prefix/memo, identity-cache, termination and structural-owner contracts, Umans, all three new generic-wrapper cases, and both layout guards.
  • Isolated sidecar dispatch contract: one passed, nine assertions.
  • TypeScript, structure consistency, privacy scan and diff checks passed.
  • Production source diff from 260a1121 is empty.

The fixed broad run also passed all 77 prefix/memo end-to-end cases, 23 direct signature recovery cases, 72 hosted-search recovery cases and all 17 hosted-search module files. This does not claim every test with “search” in its name passed; two Codex configuration-injection tests are among the baseline failures.

Review/merge boundary

These results support an explicit focused/full-suite exception with the baseline evidence and unresolved timing caveats above. They do not replace required functional CI on the eventual exact published head. An action_required CI result is pending approval, not a passing check. Keep required CI approval/success as a pre-merge condition. No full-suite success, functional-CI approval, deployment or real-device reproduction is claimed.

Published test-only commit: f4dddcff0ddf1a7785720bf8d144f645d211b66e; verified tree 0fa953c8aa6dafab21d4a09937f910cb3c9d5022. The branch is two commits behind current dev (7640a942b35044c974e534b84d5a8049f4a8ae9a), within the readiness limit. At attestation there are no submitted Codex/CodeRabbit findings; CodeRabbit has skipped this draft, which is not a completed review. The three exact-head functional workflows currently require maintainer approval.

Reproducible commands and file selection

Replace /path/to/... with local paths to Bun 1.4.3 and worktrees at the specified commits.

These commands use the official runner and its normal lock/resource limits. The unchanged offline preload used in both broad runs and final focused validation is:

// Local fixture servers are allowed; unmocked external fetches fail closed.
const originalFetch = globalThis.fetch;
globalThis.fetch = new Proxy(originalFetch, {
  apply(target, thisArg, args: Parameters<typeof fetch>) {
    const input = args[0];
    const url = new URL(input instanceof Request ? input.url : String(input));

      throw new Error("Offline validation forbids unmocked external fetch");
    }
    return Reflect.apply(target, thisArg, args);
  },
});
// Use mocked fetch/local fixture transport instead of an inherited proxy executor.
for (const key of ["HTTP_PROXY", "HTTPS_PROXY", "ALL_PROXY", "http_proxy", "https_proxy", "all_proxy"]) delete process.env[key];

Broad candidate command, at the frozen production tree before the two test-only corrections:

Baseline selection was generated from unique test-file header lines in that actual candidate log, retaining first-appearance order, then excluding paths absent from the clean base. The following reproduces the selection and explicit official-runner invocation; it does not substitute direct bun test, bypass locking, or change concurrency. The 1,860-file selection and 1,853-file common selection were retained separately. Seven PR-added files are necessarily absent on base. Actual baseline log order was independently verified to equal the candidate's common-file order.

export BUN OFFLINE

common = [p for p in selected if (base / p).is_file()]
assert len(selected) == 1860 and len(common) == 1853
pathlib.Path('/tmp/pr7098-frozen-selection-20261015.txt').write_text('\n'.join(selected) + '\n')

raise SystemExit(result.returncode)
PY

The broad command is intentionally documented as a failed run. No full-suite pass is claimed; the test-only update was validated separately above. Added generic-error coverage is specifically upstream HTTP 400 with client streaming/JSON delivery, not a new generic upstream-SSE-error test.

CodeRabbit prefix-budget corrections (2026-10-15)

Published commit 098ab7db69fff91be9ae3bf2bad4e8064c9abb1e, tree 53fdf1324e11390a77197c9218314b187e391e40, matches frozen local 3d196b58452c74536a05d4891068dd4125f9f2d4. Six-file correction; exact-head hosted CI and review remain pending. Earlier validation and full-suite limitations remain below.

Findings and corrections

discussion_r4278793649: cumulative observer accounting

Confirmed independently. Before correction, the new tests produced 18 pass / 4 fail: shrinking/repeated signatures accumulated charges, 100,000 one-character fragments exceeded the shared budget at finalization, empty fragments accumulated, and a denied replacement left retained observer ownership until external disposal.

The observer now charges live payloads plus conservative nonempty-string/array-slot overhead. Empty deltas retain no entries. Signature snapshots replace their previous accounting atomically; failed admission never refunds another owner's bytes. Stop-time joins and JSON parsing have separate transient reservations. A zero-copy lexical estimate accounts for strings, scalar values, containers and property/array slots before JSON.parse allocates, rather than applying a large fixed multiplier that would reject a near-2MiB single string. Canonical hashing has its own bounded scratch. All leases release on stop, invalidation, failure and disposal. Genuine excess live fragment slots still fail closed.

Regression coverage includes 200,000 two-character tool-JSON fragments, 100,000 thinking fragments, 20,000 repeated signatures/empty fragments, near-2MiB single-fragment tool strings, short-key object-heavy JSON admission, Unicode/citations/tool-prefix hash parity, and foreign-owner bytes surviving replacement/stop-time denial.

discussion_r4278793673: whole-wire four-copy reservation

Confirmed with three synthetic 9MiB final-wire cases: no-thinking image, adaptive-thinking image, adaptive-thinking document. Before correction: 18 pass / 3 fail due to budget admission.

Runtime hashing now emits the existing canonical representation incrementally in at most 1,024 UTF-16-code-unit chunks, without splitting surrogate pairs. It retains v1 sorted keys, ordering, length framing and exact digest bytes. It does not replace image/document data with hashes or silently change the envelope scheme. Temporary escaped strings/UTF-8 encoding, key sorting and shallow protocol projections are budget-admitted and released. The existing canonical serializer remains a parity oracle, not a runtime hashing dependency.

Ordinary requests with neither thinking nor opaque history skip observation. Repair/active-memo requests keep observation even when a compatible upstream emits new thinking without an explicit thinking option; existing search regressions proved that blindly skipping would drop newly generated valid blocks. Fixed assistant-header framing is precomputed so observer initialization does not add a new budget-admission exception outside the parser cleanup boundary.

Tests verify 9MiB image/document preparation stays below 256KiB scratch, unchanged canonical hashes across escaped/Unicode chunk boundaries, and actual scoped adapter construction of >9MiB text with reasoning none/high. Existing search/generation/memo/cancellation cases remain intact. One redacted-admission fixture now explicitly requests thinking to ensure it continues exercising its intended observer path.

Final validation

At the final fixed HEAD above:

  • Official 13-file focused run: 368 pass, 0 fail, 3,524 assertions, 1.9 seconds.
  • Isolated sidecar: 1 pass, 0 fail, 9 assertions.
  • Combined: 369 pass, 3,533 assertions.
  • TypeScript, structure consistency, privacy scan and diff checks all passed.

The earlier frozen broad/base diagnostic and its disclosed shared failures/unresolved timing cases remain as documented in the readiness report. No new full-suite pass is claimed. Exact published-head required functional CI remains a pre-merge gate. No real model or user-device requests were made.

Exact validation commands

Use the unchanged strict offline preload documented in the readiness report. It permits local fixture servers and fails unmocked external fetch; no lock bypass or runner-limit changes.

Independent frozen review

A separate reviewer approved exact 3d196b58 / tree 53fdf132 without changing source. Its external check passed 263 assertions, independently comparing exact v1 digests across Unicode, escaping, chunk boundaries and sparse arrays; it also covered depth 140, admission-denial foreign-owner preservation and the repair observation guard. A separate official two-file run passed 53 tests / 173 assertions. Evidence: /tmp/pr7098-independent-budget-check.log, /tmp/pr7098-independent-budget-focused.log; external script /tmp/pr7098-independent-budget-check.ts. These independent checks supplement, rather than replace or inflate, the 369-test final focused count.

Second review: unchanged-history traversal and scoped-test assertions

Latest fixed local HEAD: 8ee05601c4e5e60ab398f7a6cff574590ae1419f; tree 8c87d591edc640fef7ef3ee881d58397554150d2. This is one additional commit on the approved budget tree (published as 098ab7d). Four files change: prefix helper, two existing test suites, owning structure document.

  • discussion_r4278930649: confirmed the unchanged path redundantly rebuilt the same seed. A new hinted-history test first passed its exact hash/parent and unchanged-body assertions but failed its one-traversal assertion: the protocol text getter was read twice instead of once. RED: 22 pass / 1 fail. The helper now returns the already-complete first-pass seed unless the filtering branch ran. Rewritten histories, including removal of empty assistant containers and explicit strip handling, still recompute. Existing omission/generation/search tests remain unchanged and pass.
  • discussion_r4278930652: existing key-auth setup did populate both durable identities; the test now explicitly asserts both are truthy and that reasoning high uses positive budget high-water accounting. It retains payload preservation, zero overflow and zero final owned bytes assertions.

Final official commands are exactly the 13-file focused command, isolated sidecar command and type/structure/privacy/diff commands above, run in the same worktree at this new fixed HEAD. Results: 369 focused tests / 3,535 assertions, plus 1 sidecar test / 9 assertions = 370 passed / 3,544 assertions, no failures. TypeScript, structure, privacy and diff checks passed.

No full-suite pass or real-account validation is implied. Previously documented broad-test exceptions and exact-head required-CI boundary remain unchanged.

Independent review approved exact 8ee05601 / tree 8c87d591: checked all four changed files, root-reset removal and explicit-strip recomputation, unchanged seed equivalence, and the new scoped/high-water assertions. Its separate official regression file passed 23 tests / 63 assertions, log /tmp/pr7098-trivial-independent.log. No source changes during review.

Published as 1c052dad40f8f80b9d7128b3bb0d3ec2b2198a95; remote tree verified equal to 8c87d591edc640fef7ef3ee881d58397554150d2. Independent fixed-tree review also passed 23 tests / 63 assertions, reported separately from the 370 total. CodeRabbit has verified and resolved both second-round findings at this exact head; all four review threads are resolved by the bot. The complete automated review may run again after readiness. Three functional workflows remain action_required, pending a maintainer with upstream write access; this is not a passing functional CI result.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds scoped Anthropic prefix observations, selective rejection memos, and one-time recovery for eligible thinking-signature binding errors. It also adds bounded capture and replay of Anthropic assistant history in hosted-search continuations, with related tests and documentation.

Changes: Anthropic Thinking Recovery and Prefix Continuity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prefix observations and envelope propagation
src/types/request.ts, src/adapters/anthropic-prefix-hints.ts, src/adapters/anthropic-prefix-observer.ts, src/adapters/anthropic-prefix.ts, src/adapters/anthropic.ts, src/bridge/*, src/responses/reasoning-envelope.ts, src/responses/parser.ts, tests/adapters/bridge-anthropic-prefix.test.ts, tests/responses/reasoning-envelope-prefix.test.ts, tests/responses/responses-anthropic-prefix-consistency.test.ts
Anthropic streams attach private prefix observations to completed thinking blocks. Responses envelopes carry validated observations, and parsing keeps hinted reasoning entries separate. Request preparation compares scoped observations and removes incompatible opaque thinking where the recorded context supports that comparison.
Selective rejection memos
src/adapters/anthropic-rejection-memo.ts, src/responses/reasoning-replay-cache.ts, src/server/responses/core-replay.ts, tests/adapters/reasoning-replay-identity.test.ts
Rejection memos can store up to 256 validated payload fingerprints within existing cache bounds. Missing or invalid captures use blanket rejection behavior.
Responses signature-recovery path
src/server/responses/anthropic-thinking-recovery.ts, src/server/responses/adapter-dispatch.ts, src/server/responses/adapter-delivery.ts, src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts, tests/responses/responses-anthropic-thinking-recovery.test.ts, tests/responses/responses-anthropic-thinking-signature-recovery.test.ts
Eligible Anthropic signature-binding errors can trigger one retry when replay is safe and budgets permit. Rejection is recorded only after validated completed output.
Hosted-search recovery and assistant replay
src/adapters/anthropic-replay.ts, src/adapters/anthropic-tool-catalog.ts, src/web-search/anthropic-history.ts, src/web-search/loop.ts, src/web-search/progress-stream.ts, src/server/responses/sidecar-send-budget.ts, tests/responses/responses-web-search-thinking-signature-recovery.test.ts
Hosted search captures and validates Anthropic assistant blocks for request-local continuations. Recovery retains completed search history and tool catalogs while retrying the current model iteration. Supporting tests cover replay, send budgets, and recovery boundaries.
Documentation and test wiring
docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/architecture.md, structure/*, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, tests/helpers/responses-core-source.ts, tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-message-stop-termination.test.ts, tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-sidecar-account-failover.test.ts, tests/providers/umans-provider.test.ts, tests/server/inference-client-encoder-delivery.test.ts
Transport documentation describes recovery and prefix-observation constraints. Test layout and source inventories include the added suites, and existing stream and delivery assertions reflect the updated event handling.

Recommendation: request changes; do not land this head yet. Reviewed 1c052dad40f8f80b9d7128b3bb0d3ec2b2198a95 against origin/dev at 7640a942b35044c974e534b84d5a8049f4a8ae9a.

The bounded, exact-error recovery has useful safeguards: a shared one-shot guard, send-budget/pacing ownership, pre-output replay fences, and success-only memoization. However, the new proactive prefix validator also rejects valid conversations before Anthropic can evaluate them. The two inline P1 findings below are independently reproduced through the real Responses handler and adapter; the corresponding cases succeed on unchanged dev.

Scope and smaller alternatives: this is now 45 files, +4,362/-127 lines, spanning recovery, hosted-search transcript fidelity, portable prefix observations, and selective rejection caching. Those are separate contracts and should be independently reviewable. Prefer splitting the bounded recovery and the demonstrated search-history mutation fixes from the proactive local validator. The latter needs provider-contract coverage before becoming an admission gate.

Anthropic and Bedrock both document thinking.block_binding.prefix_mismatch_behavior: "drop_block" with thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01. That is a substantially smaller way to avoid the explicit prefix-binding refusal on supported destinations. It is not a complete root-cause replacement: Anthropic describes it as a stopgap that can increase output-token cost, and it does not repair system/tools/history mutations or apply to tampered/undecryptable signatures. Any adoption needs correct header/body pairing, supported thinking modes, and destination gating; do not inject the beta into arbitrary compatible providers. I am not opening a blanket replacement PR because it would leave those correctness questions and the demonstrated history mutations unresolved.

Overlap: #7102 is related but independently actionable: the native Messages builder currently forwards thinking.block_binding while its beta is dropped. This PR changes neither that allowlist nor that builder, so it does not fix #7102. Land its narrowly paired header/body fix separately. #7108 is a separate output-classification/narration problem; nothing here changes thinking into visible commentary, and opaque signature bytes should not become an undocumented narration classifier.

Integration/CI: git merge-tree --write-tree HEAD origin/dev succeeds without conflicts; the head is two dev commits behind. Exact-head enforce-target, resolve-pr, hygiene, label, and CodeRabbit report success. Cross-platform CI (the workflow containing the PR Ubuntu subset), Catalog async contracts, and React Doctor are action_required, awaiting fork-run approval; there is no passing runtime-CI result for this head.

Local verification: TypeScript no-emit, structure SSOT, privacy scan, and diff whitespace checks pass. OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 with the seven new recovery/prefix/replay test files plus both layout guards and tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts passes 291 tests / 2,817 assertions, zero failures. Three extra contract reproductions (oldest-thinking removal, same-resource rotating URL, and pre-binding-model system change during a tool continuation) give 0 pass / 3 fail here versus 3 pass / 0 fail on unchanged dev; these are scratch review fixtures, not changes to the contributor branch. OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test:changed -- --parallel=1 was stopped after 222.3 seconds (exit 130) to bound shared-machine cost; its partial results are not a passing changed-suite result. No full suite was run because concurrent lanes share this machine. No live paid-provider requests, contributor-branch writes, or replacement implementation were performed.

blocking_issues: the two reproduced P1 regressions below, plus missing approved exact-head runtime CI. Request changes.

[P1] Allow a retained thinking run to start after removed oldest blocks

After two successful Opus 5.5 turns, remove only the first turn's Responses reasoning item, keep its assistant text and every other message unchanged, retain the second turn's signed reasoning, and append a third user message. This guard throws AnthropicHistoryIncompatibleError because the first retained block's parent is the omitted predecessor rather than ANTHROPIC_PREFIX_ROOT. The actual handler returns HTTP 400 before send 3 (only two upstream sends); unchanged dev sends the request successfully.

Anthropic explicitly permits removing thinking from the start, the end, or all of history; only a gap within the retained original sequence is invalid. Requiring the first retained block to have a root parent rejects this valid oldest-first trimming pattern. Allow a non-root anchor for the first surviving original block while continuing to validate adjacency between retained blocks; add a three-turn regression for both signed and redacted histories. See preserved-thinking prefix rules.

[P1] Gate local prefix enforcement by the upstream model's binding contract

A durable replay scope is the only eligibility check here, so this validator also issues/enforces hints for Sonnet 4.5 and other models that do not perform conversation-prefix binding. Reproduction: obtain a signed Sonnet 4.5 tool call, return the executed tool result, and change only the top-level system instructions for the continuation. The block is marked mismatched, then lines 159–161 reject the manual-thinking tool continuation locally. I get HTTP 400 with only the first upstream send; unchanged dev returns 200 with both sends. The new test at tests/responses/responses-anthropic-prefix-consistency.test.ts:328 currently codifies this incorrect rejection.

The official guidance states that models before Fable 5.1 do not run the prefix check. Preserve their valid signed tool history rather than applying a newer model's restriction. Gate proactive omission/refusal on a supported provider/model contract (unknown contracts should remain upstream-validated), and add a control asserting that an older manual-thinking model still receives its original signed thinking after a system-prefix change.

Split the recovery/history portion into draft #7147, carrying your commits and adding Co-authored-by: lcxhh <lcxhh521@gmail.com> attribution. It retains one-shot exact binding-rejection recovery and bounded selective memos, extends coverage to media/empty retries, and excludes local prefix validation. All three round-1 legal-history controls pass. Native block_binding beta pairing stays separate in #7132 for #7102. Broader serial validation and independent review are pending; #7098 remains unmerged.

Carry the bounded payload memo from lidge-jun#7098 without its local prefix validator. Keep legal history edits upstream-owned, and preserve newly issued thinking after a repaired send.

Integrate upstream dev 0b13396 with current lidge-jun#6454/lidge-jun#6594, lidge-jun#6381,
lidge-jun#5947, lidge-jun#7120 and maintainer lidge-jun#7147. lidge-jun#7077 is already in upstream.
Use lidge-jun#7147 recovery without restoring the obsolete lidge-jun#7098 prefix gate.

Preserve previous personal dev as first parent and retain its DSH
profile patch and real-home write protection through the newer
upstream implementations. Keep backup/dev-before-integration-20261015.

Validated typecheck, structure, privacy and file-size gates, plus
focused isolated synthetic/local-fixture regression tests. This is
source integration only; no release, installation or deployment.

* fix(responses): share thinking recovery across media and empty retries

Use each existing dispatch, pacing and send-budget owner. Retry only the current inference, keep completed media side effects, and retain structured replacement refusals. Ordinary continuations after output stay ineligible.
