Summary

  • The web-search sidecar loop (src/web-search/loop.ts) runs several routed-model iterations per turn: one per search-calling pass, plus at most one empty-answer retry at the forced answer. Every iteration re-sends the full conversation context.
  • Before this change only the final iteration's terminal reached the bridge, so onUsage (which feeds the request log and usage ledger through bindKeyUsageFromBridge) counted one iteration and silently dropped the other N-1.
  • Quota-visibility impact: every web-search turn was under-reported by N-1 full-context iterations. A turn with two searches and an answer recorded only the last of its three full-context sends, so token totals, cost estimates and any burn or quota monitor built on the request log undercounted real provider consumption. After this change the ledger usage of a web-search turn is the sum of what was actually sent. API-key accounts were already metered per physical response at the adapter seam (request-transport.ts, "Observe terminals before search/image loops ... hide earlier rounds"), so this closes the gap for the remaining accounts.
  • The fix sums the usage of each discarded iteration (search-calling passes and the discarded empty forced answer) with the existing shared mergeUsage from src/server/responses/empty-completion-guard.ts and adds it to what onUsage reports. When the loop ends with an in-stream error or the iteration-cap error, which carry no usage of their own, the sum alone is reported. Input, output, cached, cache-read and cache-creation tokens add; contextTotalTokens and rawUsage stay the last iteration's.
  • The client-facing terminal is unchanged and keeps the last iteration's usage. Codex reads context size from response.completed.usage, which responsesUsage (src/bridge/internal.ts) builds from inputTokens whenever contextTotalTokens is absent (every adapter except Kiro). Claude Code reads input_tokens + cache_read_input_tokens + cache_creation_input_tokens, which anthropicUsage (src/claude/outbound.ts) derives from the same Responses usage. Putting the sum there would make a three-iteration turn look like a context about three times larger and trigger early auto-compaction, which itself spends quota.
  • This deliberately differs from the empty-completion guard, the terminal-continuation guard and the image loop, which fold merged usage into the client terminal. Their multiplier is bounded at about 2x for a retry or continuation; the web-search loop's goes up to maxSearches + 3.
  • Out of scope, unchanged: an adapter error terminal still throws LoopError (its own iteration's usage is still dropped), and usage is still attributed to the final account rather than per iteration across a mid-loop credential rotation. src/web-search/run-turn-loop.ts (runTurn adapters) has the same gap and is left for a follow-up.
  • structure/runtime.md (web-search loop paragraph) documents the new accounting and the client-terminal rule.

Verification

  • New tests/web-search/web-search-loop-iteration-usage.test.ts (3 cases) asserts both sides: the onUsage ledger value is the sum, and the client-visible response.completed.usage is the last iteration's.
  • Red on upstream/dev (c37161c51): 0 pass / 3 fail. The ledger reported inputTokens 1400 instead of 2400, 1500 instead of 3900, and nothing at all on the in-stream failure.
  • The same test against an earlier version of this change that folded the sum into the terminal event: 0 pass / 3 fail. The client wire showed input_tokens 3900 / total_tokens 4035 instead of 1500 / 1580.
  • Green on this branch: 3 pass / 0 fail.
  • bun test tests/web-search/: 371 pass / 0 fail across 21 files.
  • bun run typecheck: clean.
  • bun run structure:check: passed. Layout, file-size ratchet, structure and usage-passthrough guards (tests/test-layout.test.ts, tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts, tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts, tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts, tests/responses/responses-usage-passthrough.test.ts): 95 pass / 0 fail.
  • bun run privacy:scan: passed.
  • bun run test:changed (Bun 1.4.3): 14406 pass / 35 skip / 1 fail across 588 files. The one failure, connected-client runtime probe scope > a rejected preferred runtime falls back without rewriting the saved selection in tests/cli/cli-connect-readiness.test.ts, fails the same way on a clean upstream/dev checkout and is unrelated to this change.
  • The full bun run test suite was not run locally; it is left to CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Web-search usage reporting now includes token and cache usage from iterations that are hidden from the client, including search passes and retried empty answers.
    • Usage from completed iterations is reported even if the loop later encounters an error or reaches its iteration limit.
    • Client-facing terminal usage remains unchanged; context totals continue to reflect the latest iteration.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

📝 Walkthrough

The web-search loop now aggregates usage from iterations whose terminal events are not sent to the client. It reports that usage with bridged response usage and on error or iteration-cap exits, while preserving client-facing terminal usage and the last iteration’s context checkpoint. Tests cover retries and in-stream failure.

Changes: Web-search usage reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect usage from hidden iterations
src/web-search/loop.ts
The loop extracts usage from terminal events and accumulates it for search-calling iterations and unusable forced answers before retry or failure.
Report and validate aggregated usage
src/web-search/loop.ts, tests/web-search/web-search-loop-iteration-usage.test.ts, structure/runtime.md, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The loop reports hidden usage on errors and iteration-cap exits, and merges it with bridged response usage. Tests cover aggregation, retries, client-facing usage, context checkpoints, and in-stream failure. The runtime documentation and test shard mappings are updated.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 407b0

Some web-search requests can under-report usage in the ledger, or report an earlier iteration's context size as the final one. Client behavior is unaffected, so this is mergeable, but the gaps are worth fixing soon.

Each web-search turn runs several routed-model iterations (search-calling
passes and, at the forced answer, one empty-answer retry), and every one
re-sends the full context. Only the final iteration's terminal reached the
bridge, so onUsage and the request log dropped N-1 full-context iterations
per turn.

Sum the usage of every discarded iteration with the shared mergeUsage from
empty-completion-guard and add it to what onUsage reports: the final
terminal's usage, or the sum alone when the loop ends with an in-stream or
iteration-cap error. Token and cache counts add; contextTotalTokens stays
the last iteration's.

The client-facing terminal keeps the last iteration's usage. Codex and
Claude Code size the context window from response.completed.usage (the
Claude encoder derives input/cache_read/cache_creation from it), so a sum
there would read as a context several times larger and trigger early
auto-compaction. Error terminals still throw as before; per-iteration
account attribution is unchanged.

…ge report

An earlier iteration's contextTotalTokens and rawUsage no longer stand in for a
final terminal that omits them; the shared mergeUsage keeps its fallback.
