Summary

  • Cost estimates no longer price partly measured usage. estimateAttemptCost and estimateRequestCost (src/usage/cost.ts) priced any usage that was present, whatever its usageStatus. A combo row whose first leg failed without usage is unreported (aggregateAttemptUsage) but still carries the second leg's tokens, so it got an understated cost presented as complete. That affected the Logs ~$ value, routing-analytics success cost (successCostUsd), and the per-model and per-provider cost attribution in /api/usage. Both estimators now return null unless the status is reported or estimated. The existing isMeasuredStatus helper moves from summary.ts to cost.ts so both files share one definition.
  • The priced and unpriced request counters no longer count one request twice. bumpRequestCounts (src/usage/summary.ts) incremented both pricedRequests and unpricedRequests when a request's attempts on one model split between priced and unpriced. That made priced + unpriced > requests and overstated priceCoverageRatio. Now a request counts as unpriced if any attempt is unpriced.
  • When a usage-less attempt counts as zero cost. If an attempt carries no usage, spentNothing (src/usage/summary.ts) decides whether it is a known zero or an unknown cost:
    • No physical send (sendCount === 0 or locallyAnswered): zero. Nothing reached upstream.
    • Refused before any output (status >= 400, not streamAborted, no firstOutputMs): zero. Providers do not bill a request rejected with an HTTP error before generation (429/401/403/400/413/5xx with an error body). Without this, every pool-rotation or failover retry after a 429 would drop out of price coverage. requestSpendRecord's settled count is send-budget accounting, not money, so it doesn't contradict this.
    • Response began, or status is not an error (streamAborted, firstOutputMs set, or a 2xx/unknown status with no usage frame): unpriced. Such an attempt may have generated billed tokens, e.g. a mid-stream failure. One of these makes the whole request unpriced.
    • Only no-cost attempts: the request still counts as unpriced, as before.
  • Request-level totals: computeEntryCost now makes the row unpriced when a usage-less attempt is not a known zero. A non-combo retry row reads reported from its served leg, so before this change an earlier leg that died mid-stream left the total understated but confident. An attempt that has usage but no matching price keeps upstream's pinned behaviour: the priced remainder is still totalled (combo-mixed-pricing test).
  • Docs: docs-site/.../guides/web-dashboard.md (excluded-request semantics) and structure/dashboard-and-usage.md (owning doc for src/usage/).

Verification

  • Red first on clean upstream/dev (0b13396af), using a detached worktree with only the new test file copied in: bun test tests/usage/usage-cost.test.ts gave 102 pass, 4 fail. The 4 new tests failed:
    • partly measured usage was priced;
    • a mixed priced/unpriceable request was counted priced;
    • no-send, local, and 429-refused legs before a served retry were counted on both sides;
    • stream-aborted, output-began, and silent-200 legs were counted on both sides.
  • Green: bun test tests/usage/ gave 1126 pass, 0 fail. This includes the CodeRabbit follow-up regression "a retry row reported from its last leg does not total a cost an earlier leg may have added", which fails before b83e2d70c.
  • tests/usage/usage-summary.test.ts "row-unique overflow folds a multi-model request only once" had pinned the old double count (pricedRequests: 1, unpricedRequests: 1). Its second attempt has status 200, sendCount: 1 and no usage, so under the new rule it now expects pricedRequests: 0, unpricedRequests: 1.
  • bun run typecheck: clean.
  • bun run test:changed was last run on the previous revision of this branch. The final revision only changes spentNothing and its tests. Result: 30439 pass, 39 skip, 11 fail, 3 errors. The failures are in tests/cli/cli-access-audio-live.test.ts, tests/service/service-sqlite-home.test.ts, tests/service/service.test.ts and tests/cli/cli-connect-readiness.test.ts. The first three pass in isolation on both this branch and clean upstream/dev, so they are load-dependent. cli-connect-readiness ("a rejected preferred runtime falls back…") also fails on clean upstream/dev. None of these files imports src/usage/cost.ts or src/usage/summary.ts.
  • bun run structure:check: passed. bun run privacy:scan: passed. docs-site: bun run build completed.
  • No GUI change.

📝 Walkthrough

Cost estimates now require reported or estimated usage. Request pricing coverage distinguishes attempts known to have spent nothing from attempts that may have been billed.

Changes: Usage accounting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Measured usage and cost estimation
src/usage/cost.ts:400-408, 580, 668, src/usage/summary.ts:13, 431-434, tests/usage/usage-cost.test.ts:768-781
isMeasuredStatus is shared by cost estimation and usage summaries. Attempt and request estimates return null for unreported or unsupported usage, including when token data is present.
Request pricing coverage
src/usage/summary.ts:813-834, 1570, tests/usage/usage-cost.test.ts:28-29, 783-820, tests/usage/usage-summary.test.ts:1961, structure/dashboard-and-usage.md:293, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/web-dashboard.md:206-210
Attempts known to have spent nothing do not add an unpriced fact. A request counts as priced only if it has a priced fact and no unpriced fact. Tests and documentation describe these rules; the overflow test now expects zero priced requests for the collapsed row.

`estimateAttemptCost` / `estimateRequestCost` priced any usage present,
whatever its `usageStatus`. A combo row whose first leg failed without
usage is `unreported` yet still carries the second leg's tokens, so it
got an understated cost reported as if complete (Logs, routing
analytics, per-model attribution). Price only `reported` or `estimated`
usage.

The usage summary also bumped both `pricedRequests` and
`unpricedRequests` for a request whose attempts on one model split
priced/unpriced, overstating price coverage. Unpriced now dominates.

A usage-less attempt is a known zero, not an unknown cost, when it made
no physical send (`sendCount === 0` / `locallyAnswered`) or upstream
refused it with an HTTP error before any output (status >= 400, no
`streamAborted`, no `firstOutputMs`) -- providers do not bill a
pre-generation 429/401/5xx, so pool rotation keeps its price coverage.
One whose response began, aborted mid-stream, or carries no error
status may have generated billed tokens and unprices the request.

`computeEntryCost` priced a row when any attempt had an estimate. A
non-combo retry row takes its status and usage from the served leg, so
it reads `reported` while an earlier leg that died mid-stream without
usage may have added billed tokens; the summary totalled the served leg
alone as a confident, understated cost. A usage-less leg that
`spentNothing` does not clear now makes the row unpriced; a no-send or
pre-generation-refused leg is still a known zero.
