🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Cache the verdict only after the bundle check gives a trustworthy answer.
isFlutterAppBundle returns false when runSimctl("get_app_container", ...) fails. It also returns false when the path is empty. foregroundFlutterCandidate stores that result under the current PID with rememberFlutterCandidate.
A transient simctl failure, such as one that occurs while the app is starting, then becomes a permanent false verdict for that process. A Flutter app stays on the accessibility fallback until it relaunches.
Make isFlutterAppBundle return a third state (an error). Skip rememberFlutterCandidate when the check fails. Treat the failed check as "not a candidate" for that call only.
Proposed direction
- isCandidate := s.isFlutterAppBundle(activeApp.BundleID)
- rememberFlutterCandidate(s.UDID, activeApp.ProcessID, isCandidate)
-
- return activeApp.BundleID, isCandidate
+ isCandidate, err := s.checkFlutterAppBundle(activeApp.BundleID)
+ if err != nil {
+ utils.Verbose("flutter: bundle check failed, not caching: %v", err)
+ return activeApp.BundleID, false
+ }
+ rememberFlutterCandidate(s.UDID, activeApp.ProcessID, isCandidate)
+ return activeApp.BundleID, isCandidatecheckFlutterAppBundle must return an error for runSimctl failures and for an empty path. It must return (false, nil) only when the framework directory is confirmed absent.

A dump of a simulator first asks whether the foreground app is Flutter, and that question cost two simctl calls every time: GetForegroundApp lists every installed app only to enrich a name and version the dump throws away, and isFlutterAppBundle reads the app container to look for Flutter.framework. Together ~0.6s, more than the accessibility dump of a light screen, paid again by every locator query, visibility poll and tap-by-ref. Ask the agent for the foreground app instead, which the dump needs anyway, and remember the Flutter verdict per process id, the way the real-device path already does. A relaunched or reinstalled app gets a new pid and is looked at again. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>

A dump first asks the agent which app is in front, to decide whether to read a Flutter render tree instead. That answer carries the class name of the view controller on screen, which the agent finds by snapshotting the hierarchy 60 levels deep — on an app with a large one that costs as much as the dump itself, around 5s, and the dump path throws it away. device.apps.foreground now takes a flag for it, so the Flutter probes ask for the app's identity alone. Callers that report the view controller, such as device.apps.foreground on the command line, are unchanged, and an older agent that ignores the flag still answers correctly. Problem
Every UI dump of an iOS simulator pays for two questions it does not need answered, on every single dump. Since a locator query, a visibility poll and a tap-by-ref are each fronted by a dump, a wait loop pays them on every tick.
1. Two simctl invocations to ask whether the app is Flutter
GetForegroundApp()->ListApps()->simctl listapps, ~0.31s, to enrich a name and version the dump discardsisFlutterAppBundle()->simctl get_app_container, ~0.30s, to look forFlutter.framework~0.6s per dump for a question whose answer cannot change while the app runs. The real-device path already caches this verdict per pid; the simulator path never did.
2. The view controller on screen, which the dump throws away
The same probe asks the agent for the foreground app, and that answer carries the class name of the view controller on screen. The agent finds it by snapshotting the hierarchy 60 levels deep — on an app with a large one that costs as much as the dump itself.
Measured on a production React Native app:
device.apps.foregroundtook 4.1-5.7s, against 2.2s for the dump it precedes.Fix
GetForegroundApp. It is one RPC the dump needs anyway and it carries the pid, sosimctl listappsgoes away entirelysimctl get_app_containerruns once per app launch rather than once per dump. A relaunched or reinstalled app gets a new pid and is looked at again; a verdict that arrives without a pid is not stored, since it could never be invalidateddevice.apps.foregroundon the command line, are unchanged, and an older agent that ignores the flag still answers correctlyThe cache is package-level rather than a struct field on purpose:
SimulatorDevicemethods take a value receiver, sotryDumpFlutterSourceruns against a copy and a field would be discarded after every call. A comment records that.Needs mobile-next/devicekit-ios#105 for the flag to take effect; without it the agent ignores the flag and behaviour is exactly as today.
Result
Measured end to end against a production React Native app on a booted simulator:
device.apps.foregroundbefore each dumpmobilecli dump uion a heavy screenFlutter apps are unaffected: the verdict is the same, computed once per launch instead of once per dump.
