execute() waits for the page to settle instead of fixed sleeps - #1322
execute() waits for the page's reaction to an action instead of fixed sleeps. A click that fetches data for 700 ms now returns with the result rendered; a click with no effect retains its 500 ms grace period.
The tracker combines DOM changes, fetch/XHR/document requests, URL changes and newly opened tabs. Playwright still handles document load events. The custom tracking covers same-document updates and requests started after an action, which load-state waits alone do not cover.
Behavior
Clicks and key presses use the same readiness rule, including Enter submitting a form. New documents are watched through their load event and requests their handlers start.
Same-document requests and DOM changes need 200 ms of quiet, with the existing 1 s limit for continuous DOM changes and 3 s overall limit. New documents remain bounded by timeout_goto_ms.
Open shadow roots and same-origin frame documents are watched, including roots inside newly inserted components. Requests from cross-origin frames are excluded; cross-origin API calls made by the main frame still count.
Repeated text/attribute changes on a node stop extending the quiet window after two changes. Structural changes still count. Repeated identical requests stop extending the quiet window and share the existing 1 s continuous-change window, allowing retries to finish without polling holding every action for 3 s. Query strings, request bodies and originating frames distinguish requests.
New tabs are tracked from when they appear and selected by identity, including when another tab closes at the same time or its opener closes before the driver acknowledges the click. A closed-target click error is preserved unless a live replacement appears. Temporary download tabs can close without failing the click or replacing the active page.
Scroll waits for motion to finish and for content it starts loading. Tracker activity before the action does not consume its grace period. Polling reads and the final targeted-scroll boundary check share the existing scroll deadline, including when a browser evaluation blocks. goto retains its existing wait behavior.
Validation
Local browser regressions cover background polling, clock/carousel updates, cross-origin iframe traffic, Enter/click form submission, infinite scrolling, retries, requests with different queries, download tabs, delayed navigation, early tab requests, late load handlers and nested roots. The new busy-page, Enter and infinite-scroll tests were confirmed failing before the fixes.
Focused browser gate: 112 passed (test_execute_settle.py, test_settle_rules.py, test_controller_scroll.py, test_goto_settle_wait.py). Coverage includes self-replacing tabs, closing without a replacement, pre-action tracker activity, rendering that spans an action, the quiet and continuous-change windows, closed-target click errors, blocked scroll reads and a blocked final boundary check. Backend contract tests passed in the earlier 98-test run.
Pre-commit checks passed, including Ruff, basedpyright (zero errors/warnings), import checks and secret detection.
Full local make test was interrupted under heavy machine load; the full suite and live coverage are being checked by CI on the pushed head.
Limits and rollout
This is a best-effort page-wide readiness heuristic. Inline style animations, images/fonts outside document loading, late-attached shadow roots on existing hosts and cross-origin iframe content are not watched. Delayed work beyond the grace window can still be missed. Long chains of identical retries or repeated updates to one node can outlast their noise window. Continuously changing pages remain bounded by the limits above. Remote browser latency has not been benchmarked.
The monorepo's page-execute API and page-ops sidecar call native NotteSession.aexecute(), so they inherit this behavior when their OSS dependency is bumped. Hosted agents use the separately pinned legacy runtime and do not inherit this PR. Their cancel-on-DOM-update mechanism acts during model reasoning and serves a separate purpose.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Browser actions now wait for pages to settle after navigation, scrolling, and other changes, reducing the chance of capturing incomplete results.
Scrolling waits for movement to finish and handles cases where scrolling does not start.
Newly opened tabs are detected and awaited more reliably.
Page updates in frames and shadow-root content are included when determining whether a page has settled.
Back and forward navigation wait for the new page to begin loading before continuing.
New Features
The browser driver now exposes the Request type for supported browser backends.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The browser driver now exports the Request type from the selected backend. Selected actions use page-settle tracking for DOM changes, URL changes, and tracked requests. Scroll actions poll scroll positions until movement stabilizes or a timing limit is reached. Browser tests cover settling rules, navigation, tabs, requests, frames, shadow roots, and scrolling.

If the only moving frame detaches after an earlier poll reports movement, read() skips that frame and returns scrolled = False. Because the elapsed time is already at least SCROLL_START_MS, _scroll_ended() returns False, and the page-wide action raises ScrollActionFailedError. The previous 200 ms check would have succeeded if the frame detached after that check. This changes the contract from “a scroll started” to “the final poll reports movement.”

…d sleeps
execute() slept fixed times after an action: 500 ms after a click or a key
press (to catch a new tab), the network going idle then 500 ms after an
interaction that changed the URL or a reload, the load then 500 ms after a
back / forward, and 200 ms before and after a scroll. Too long for actions
that change nothing, too short for a page that reacts later (a fetch, a
timer, a navigation started by a script), and up to the 10 s load timeout
on a page that keeps a request open.
notte_browser.settle tracks, from right before the action, DOM changes in
the page, its same-origin frames and open shadow roots, the fetch / XHR /
document requests it starts, URL changes and new tabs, and waits until the
page is quiet:
- a click or a key press with no visible effect keeps the 500 ms grace;
- a request the action started is waited for, at most 3 s;
- a navigation to a new document: after a click or a reload, until its
requests are done and its DOM has settled, then its load; after a key
press, until its DOM has settled or it has loaded; after a back /
forward, until both (a bfcache restore has loaded already). At most
timeout_goto_ms (10 s);
- a new tab is switched to, as before, then waited for like a click's page;
- a scroll ends once its position is stable for 50 ms (fails if it has not
started after 200 ms, at most 1 s).

… loads and tabs early
From review:
- The grace and the caps counted from before the interaction, so a click
that waited for its element used them up. They now count from the
action's input event in the page (pointerdown / keydown), else from its
end; what the page did meanwhile (an overlay going away) is not taken for
the action's effect.
- A new document that settled before its load event (a slow image) is
watched again from the load, for requests its handlers start.
- Open shadow roots and same-origin frame documents that appear while the
page is tracked (an element added by the action, a frame that navigates)
are watched too.
- A new tab's requests are tracked from when it appears, not from when it
is switched to.
A new document, the action's effect, gets GRACE_MS (150 ms) for a script
that renders once it is parsed, instead of what was left of the action's
grace.

…ts; keep goto's wait
From review:
- A tab that opens while another closes leaves the tab count unchanged:
execute() now switches when a page is new, not only when the count
changed.
- A shadow root or frame document found while tracking is scanned for the
roots already inside it (a component that renders another one).
- After a load that came once the page had settled, the page gets the
usual grace again: its load handlers can start a request on a short
timer.
A goto keeps the 500 ms wait execute() did before its new-tab check: it
is not settled, and callers that observe right after it rely on it (a
page its scripts render after its load).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…te scroll
A click with no effect waits for what the page does on its own: a clock and a
carousel (1.6 s), polling (3.3 s, the cap), a cross-origin frame's request
(2.5 s). Enter does not wait for the data a results page fetches, a click on
the same form does. A scroll does not wait for the items it loads.

Filter pre-action tracker timestamps at the polling boundary.
PageSettle._poll filters Python request timestamps against shift, but it passes older JavaScript timestamps through since(). A scroll uses the default wait path without a pointer/key inputAt. Therefore, recent pre-scroll activity can produce negative last, dom, and urlAt values. settled() can then accept the page as quiet before scroll-triggered movement or lazy content is observed.
Normalize all tracker timestamps before aggregating or storing them.

Enforce the scroll deadline around browser evaluations.
_scroll_ended() checks SCROLL_CAP_MS only after await read(). A slow or blocked browser evaluation can therefore keep scrolling beyond the 1,000 ms cap. Targeted scrolling also evaluates the target boundary after the loop, which can add another unbounded delay. Apply the deadline to both the polling read and the targeted boundary evaluation.

Tracker timestamps before the action are discarded before aggregation, so old activity cannot consume scroll's grace period.
Scroll polling reads and the final targeted boundary evaluation share the existing deadline. A timeout returns the last observed movement outcome; unrelated reader timeouts still propagate.
Added regressions for pre-action activity, blocked reads with and without movement, a blocked final boundary check, and reader-error propagation. The focused browser/scroll/navigation gate passed all 107 tests. Commit hooks passed with zero type errors or warnings.
