Refreshes the plugin backlog from the awesome-nu audit (2026-10-31). The audit previously showed 6 untracked plugins from awesome-nu's Plugins section; all 6 are now recorded, and the audit runs clean (33 in registry, 2 in manifest, 43 in backlog, 0 untracked).

New entries:

  • wangjiawen2013/charton (nu_plugin_charton): ELIGIBLE. 448 stars. Plugin crate 0.9.0 pins nu-plugin =0.116; the v0.9.0 GitHub release has no assets, so intake is a CI build from source. Apache-2.0.
  • kazu/seekzstdsep (nu_plugin_zstdsep): SOURCE_ONLY. Tag v0.9.0 with no release object; crate pins nu-plugin 0.116. MIT.
  • gtnebel/nu_plugin_nuplot: ELIGIBLE with a caveat recorded in its note. It is implemented in Go (ainvaltin/nu-plugin library), so it does not fit the Cargo CI-build path; intake would ship the upstream release assets (v0.2.8 has 8) or need a Go build lane, and protocol compatibility needs a live check against current Nu. BSD-2-Clause.
  • nushell core crates nu_plugin_gstat, nu_plugin_inc, nu_plugin_query: recorded as BUILTIN, following the existing nu_plugin_formats precedent, so the audit stops flagging them.

Data-only change; entries were verified against the upstream repos (crate pins, tags, release assets, licenses) before listing.

Summary by cubic

Adds six plugin candidates from the awesome-nu audit (2026-10-31) so the backlog stops flagging them as untracked, and promotes nu_plugin_charton 0.9.0 to the CI build farm.

  • Records nu_plugin_zstdsep as a new SOURCE_ONLY candidate; it pins nu-plugin 0.116 and needs a CI build from source since its tag has no release assets.
  • Records nu_plugin_nuplot with a caveat: it is a Go plugin, so it does not fit the Cargo CI-build path and protocol compatibility needs a live check.
  • Records nu_plugin_gstat, nu_plugin_inc, and nu_plugin_query as BUILTIN since they ship with Nu, following the existing nu_plugin_formats precedent.

New Features

  • Promotes nu_plugin_charton 0.9.0 to the active manifest (now 34 plugins); its release has no assets, so it will be CI-built from source.
  • Builds workspace-member plugins: the manifest accepts an optional cargo_package field that the build workflow passes as cargo build --package, covered by validation and tests.

Written for commit 82c60fc. Summary will update on new commits.

This PR is a data-only backlog refresh adding 6 new plugin entries to docs/backlog.json. The entries are generally well-researched with accurate crate pins, tag states, and license notes. One concrete status inconsistency was found:

gtnebel/nu_plugin_nuplot is marked ELIGIBLE despite having nu_plugin: "unknown (Go)" — the schema requires a confirmed supported Nu minor for ELIGIBLE. Its c1_note itself states protocol compatibility "needs a live check against current Nu before promotion." SOURCE_ONLY (or another status that doesn't imply confirmed Nu compat) is more accurate until a live protocol check is completed, as ELIGIBLE entries may be picked up by automated intake pipelines.

All other new entries (nu_plugin_charton, nu_plugin_zstdsep, nu_plugin_gstat, nu_plugin_inc, nu_plugin_query) appear internally consistent with their assigned statuses and schema fields.

No noteworthy issues found.

The PR's title/body describe it as a "data-only" backlog refresh, but the diff actually does two distinct things, both of which I reviewed:

  1. New cargo_package CI-build feature — adds an optional workspace-member crate selector to manifest.json (schema note + the charton active entry), plumbs it through the build matrix (build.yml setup job → MATRIX_CARGO_PACKAGE env → cargo build --package), and validates it (validate_manifest.py validate_cargo_package + CARGO_PACKAGE_RE, plus two unit tests and a workflow-safety test). I traced every build code path: the build_cmd array construction, the --locked placement, the lockfile-update retry (correctly preserves --package), the Go-build lane (unaffected), and the null/empty matrix-value handling (p.get() → JSON null → empty env string → [ -n "${MATRIX_CARGO_PACKAGE:-}" ] guard). All correct. The validator is a proper no-op when the field is absent and rejects the four bad inputs in the test. The new charton active entry has all required fields, a valid 40-hex source_commit, a nu_version consistent with the 0.116 pin, and an exclude_targets value present in default_targets. The active[] count is exactly 34, matching docs/roadmap.md.

  2. Six new docs/backlog.json entries — well-formed JSON, schema-complete. The charton entry's status: "INTAKE_PENDING" is internally correct (it's now in manifest.json active[]), even though the PR body still calls it "ELIGIBLE".

One issue already raised by three other reviewers — nu_plugin_nuplot marked ELIGIBLE while its nu_plugin/nu_protocol are "unknown (Go)", which conflicts with the schema's ELIGIBLE semantics and the entry's own note that protocol compat "needs a live check" — is a valid concern but is already covered by inline threads from amazon-q-developer, cubic-dev-ai, and coderabbitai. I have no new angle to add, so I'm not re-posting it.

Both independent discovery workers completed a thorough trace of the two code-carrying change areas and returned no actionable candidates:

  • build.yml shell/matrix logic: The rewritten build_cmd array correctly threads --package through both the --locked first attempt and the lockfile-drift retry; ${MATRIX_CARGO_PACKAGE:-} guards the empty/null matrix value under set -u; cargo_package is defended against injection by the validator regex, the pre-build --verify-upstream recheck, and argv separation; the plugins=→release-job output contract is unaffected (no release consumer reads cargo_package); Rust workspace plugins correctly route to the cargo branch via go.mod absence.
  • validate_manifest.py + manifest entry: validate_cargo_package runs for every active entry; the regex rejects empty/leading--/spaces/slashes; the new charton active entry has all REQUIRED_FIELDS, a valid 40-hex source_commit, an exclude_targets value present in default_targets, and a nu_version consistent with the 0.116 pin; the active[] count (34) matches docs/roadmap.md and is enforced by sync_docs.py --check in CI.

The one substantive concern raised by prior reviewers — nu_plugin_nuplot marked ELIGIBLE despite unverified Go protocol compatibility — is already covered by inline threads from amazon-q-developer, cubic-dev-ai, and coderabbitai. Per the review skill, already-posted findings on this code are not re-raised, and I have no new angle or evidence to add.

No noteworthy issues found.

Pass complete. Working tree has only the intended docs/backlog.json change; all checks green and the PR is mergeable. The action will commit and push.

Summary of this autopilot pass:

Fixed — CodeRabbit thread (docs/backlog.json:1144): recorded the historical nuplot releases with their upstream-documented Nu minors — v0.2.7 → Nu 0.114 and v0.2.6 → Nu 0.113 (verified against the gtnebel/nu_plugin_nuplot README compat matrix and the 8 assets on each tag) — and set backfill_targets: ["0.114", "0.113"]. Thread replied to and resolved.

Resolved as not valid (with reasoning, threads replied + resolved):

  • amazon-q (docs/backlog.json:1134) and cubic (docs/backlog.json:1138): the ELIGIBLE status on nuplot. unknown (Go) meant only that there is no Cargo pin to read, not that compatibility is unknown — the upstream README publishes the compat matrix, which I recorded in the entry (v0.2.8 → Nu 0.116, current minor). ELIGIBLE ("has version on supported Nu minor, not yet promoted") now matches the schema. I did not switch to SOURCE_ONLY as suggested, since that status means "tags but no release assets" and nuplot releases carry 8 assets. The live protocol check remains the explicit promotion gate in c1_note.
  • cubic (docs/backlog.json:1098): stale — charton's status is now INTAKE_PENDING (promotion landed via PR Promote nu_plugin_charton 0.9.0 to the CI build farm (workspace crate via cargo_package) #118); the ELIGIBLE value the thread targeted no longer exists.

Addressed non-thread feedback: none beyond the above.

CI: all checks green (CodeQL, cubic, CodeFactor, opencode-review, manifest/packaging, workflow validation, roadmap drift, analyze) — CodeRabbit neutral is informational. No failures to fix. A fresh run will restart on this push; I did not wait on it.

Remaining risk: low — the only edit is backlog metadata (docs/backlog.json), validated by format and repo-consistency checks (272 tests pass). Mergeable state is clean.
