Part of #1252, step 2: Zonal Statistics on several cores.

What

Zonal Statistics now works out its zones on several cores on the desktop. The output is the same, bit for bit, as on one thread, in the same order, with the same messages.

Measured in a release build on a Xeon Silver 4114 (40 threads), over a 5,000 × 5,000 raster:

Zones 1 thread (the loop on main) Several threads
20,000 small zones 0.40 s 0.10 s (6 threads)
2,000 zones of 300 × 300 cells 3.13 s 0.60 s (6 threads)

On this 25 M-cell raster the masks' memory allows 6 threads (two masks of up to the raster's size each, within 256 MB); a smaller raster takes up to 16.

New for Zonal Statistics: it now honours Cancel and reports progress by zone. On several threads, try_map now counts progress and looks at Cancel item by item, as on one thread (before, a batch of 16 at a time), which Near and the other tools on it get too. A cancelled run ends with the cancelled error, as other tools' runs do. Before, it did neither.

How

  • Zones on parallel::try_map_on: each zone's mask and statistics are its own, its cells summed in the same order on any thread. The output rows, the skipped counts and the failure details are then made in input order on the calling thread, as before.
  • Threads bounded by the masks' memory: a thread holds one zone's mask, which can be as large as the raster, and briefly its trimmed copy too. The new parallel::threads_for_scratch caps the threads at what the shared scratch budget (SCRATCH_BUDGET, 256 MB) holds, two raster-sized masks each. A raster past 128 M cells is read on one thread.
  • The Tracking: analysis tools on several cores #1252 rules hold:
    • one thread in the browser;
    • threads only above PARALLEL_FEATURES (256) zones;
    • at most 16 threads, with the calling thread working too.
  • Errors: on one thread the first error in input order comes back, as before. On several, the earliest found before the threads stop (try_map_on's rule). The only error that depends on the zone is a mask that can't be allocated.

Tests

  • zonal_stats_on_several_threads_is_zonal_stats_on_one: 600 zones over a 200 × 150 raster of fractional values (so a different summing order would show), two bands, all six statistics. Zones without geometry, zones partly or wholly past the raster's edge, and overlapping zones included. Run on 2, 7 and 16 threads, compared with one thread: every attribute and every message.
  • The existing zonal tests pass unchanged.
  • cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from two tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL and a damaged-Shapefile fixture).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Zonal statistics can process polygon zones in parallel, with parallelism adjusted to limit memory use.
    • Results and failure messages remain in input order across single-threaded and multi-threaded processing.
  • Tests
    • Added comparisons of single-threaded and parallel results for zones with missing geometry, raster-edge coverage, and overlap.

…opengeos#1252)

Each zone's statistics are its own, its cells summed in the same order on any thread, so the
zones run on parallel::try_map_on and the rows are then made in input order: the same values,
bit for bit (zonal_stats_on_several_threads_is_zonal_stats_on_one). A thread holds a zone's mask,
up to the raster's size, so the threads are also bounded by the scratch budget
(parallel::threads_for_scratch). The tool now honours Cancel and reports progress by zone.

20,000 small zones over a 5,000 × 5,000 raster: 0.40 s on one thread, 0.07 s on 16. 2,000 zones
of 300 × 300 cells: 3.33 s on one thread, 0.40 s on 11 (the masks' memory allows 11).

Walkthrough

Zonal statistics now process polygon features in parallel, with default thread counts limited by scratch-memory use. Results and failure details are assembled in input order. The parallel mapping helper checks cancellation and advances progress for each item.

The parallel implementation preserves result ordering and avoids partial output on errors. Large, many-band workloads retain additional statistics in memory, so merging warrants awareness of that limitation; no serious failure was demonstrated.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the change: Zonal Statistics computes its zones across several CPU cores, with a perf scope and the #1252 reference. The changeset adds parallel zone processing to zonal_stats through zonal_stats_on and parallel::try_map_on, so the title matches the main change. It is a little long at 77 characters, and the phrase 'works out its zones' is informal, but the meaning is clear.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections and is mostly complete. The Summary explains the parallel zonal statistics change, the memory-bounded thread count, output ordering, cancellation, and progress reporting. The Testing section names a new comparison test and the results of cargo xtask ci. The UI evidence section states 'No visible UI change.', which matches the template's allowed choice for a no-UI change. The Related issue section is left as the template placeholder, so it does not link an issue. The description also refers to #1252 as a part of a series, which is a reasonable context but the issue link is not filled in.

Code review

I reviewed the two changed files against the base branch and the surrounding code in parallel.rs, control.rs, rasterops.rs and tools.rs. The threading itself is sound: each zone is independent, output is reassembled in input order, the first error in input order is preserved, the progress and cancel hooks are wired correctly, and try_map_on's batch logic keeps every claimed index ahead of the first failure. The one substantive concern is below.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • Scratch budget undercounts peak memory (medium confidence). polygon_mask_with_failures keeps the zone's full bounding-box mask alive while it allocates the trimmed copy, so each thread briefly holds about two boxes. threads_for_scratch budgets one raster-sized mask per thread. The steady state is one box, so the overshoot is transient, but on large rasters it can run up to about 2× SCRATCH_BUDGET. Inline comment posted on tools.rs:5019, with the tradeoff spelled out.

Quality

  • Redundant filter (nit, low confidence it matters): tools.rs:5015 adds .filter(|&r| r < poly_ds.features.len()), but rows() at tools.rs:1117-1120 already filters to in-range indices. Left for the release quality pass.
  • Opaque tuple (nit): the worker closure returns a four-element tuple (Vec<ZoneStats>, bool, usize, Option<String>). A small named struct would read better. Left for the release quality pass.
  • Doc comment (nit): threads_for_scratch says each thread holds scratch_bytes "at once". That is accurate only in steady state; it should change with whichever fix is chosen for the finding above.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. There are no unwrap/expect/panic calls in new non-test code, and no unsafe. Errors pass through the existing Result<_, String> path. Interface text is unchanged. Cancel and progress go through control, not eprintln!.
  • Test coverage (nit): the new Cancel and progress behaviour for Zonal Statistics has no zonal-specific test. The generic tests in parallel.rs cover the mechanism. An extra test is a quality point, so it can wait for the release quality pass.

Already raised

  • pr-context/prior-reviews.json has no threads, so none were left alone.

… copy against the threads' memory

From the review of opengeos#1377: polygon_mask_with_failures keeps a zone's bounding-box mask while it
makes the trimmed copy, so a thread holds up to two raster-sized masks at its peak. The threads
are now bounded by two each (2,000 zones of 300 × 300 cells over a 5,000 × 5,000 raster: 6
threads, 0.61 s, against 3.20 s on one).

Code review

Reviewed the diff against main (2 files: crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs). I could not compile or run the tests in this session, so the checks below are by reading the code.

Bugs

  • None found at medium or higher confidence. I checked:
    • Output order: try_map_on sorts results back into input order, and the zip against target_rows stays aligned on success.
    • Progress: the per-zone raster path (polygon_mask_with_failures, zonal_statistics_with_failures) never calls control::begin, so workers can't reset the shared count.
    • Errors and cancel: both reach the caller as String via From<Cancelled>.
    • Messages: the same notices, in the same order.
    • Memory budget: the mask is Vec<bool> (one byte per cell), so 2 × w × h bytes per thread matches the mask and its trimmed copy.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • PR body table is out of line with the code (high confidence, about 90%, from the arithmetic). The first row says 20,000 small zones on a 5,000 × 5,000 raster ran on 16 threads. With the current formula, 1 + 256 MiB / (2 × 25 M) = 6, so the same case now runs on 6 threads, as the second row says. The 16-thread timing was probably taken before d261f3f. Re-measure that row, or relabel it, before merge.

Quality

  • Low: the filter on target_rows is redundant with the get fallback in the closure. The author has already noted this for the release quality pass.
  • Low: threads_for_scratch has no direct unit test, and there is no zonal-specific Cancel test. The author has deferred the Cancel test; the generic try_map_on cancel test covers the shared path.

AGENTS.md

  • None found. There are no unwrap, expect or panic calls in non-test code. No notices are dropped. threads_for returns 1 on wasm. Layering is unaffected and there are no new dependencies. The long lines fit rustfmt.toml's max_width = 140.

Earlier review threads

  • 2 earlier concerns left alone. The CodeRabbit chunking concern was declined with reasoning that holds. The github-actions two-masks-per-thread concern was applied in d261f3f, and the diff shows it.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Check cancellation before each zone in a parallel batch.

5021-5021: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check cancellation before each zone in a parallel batch.

Parallel workers check cancellation only once per 16-zone batch, and nothing inside the batch checks it. A cancelled run therefore finishes up to 15 more zones on each thread. The serial path stops after one zone.

Suggested fix
             for (k, item) in batch.iter().enumerate() {
+                if control::cancelled() {
+                    failed.store(true, Ordering::Relaxed);
+                    return Err((from + k, Cancelled.into()));
+                }
                 match f(&mut s, from + k, item) {

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs at line 5021:
Update the parallel batch loop around `batch.iter().enumerate()` to check
cancellation before processing each zone. On cancellation, mark the batch as
failed and return the cancellation error for the current zone, preserving the
existing error-handling flow.
Nitpick Add a unit test for the default thread count in threadsforscratch.

5021-5021: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a unit test for the default thread count in threads_for_scratch.

The one-versus-many test passes explicit thread counts. The default path at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:5021 calls threads_for_scratch, and no test calls that function. A change to the scratch bound or to the default count would not fail any test, because output does not depend on the thread count.

Add a test to the test module in crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs, next to the threads_for_rows test. The assertions use threads_for as the baseline, so they hold on any host:

Suggested test
#[test]
fn threads_for_scratch_respects_the_budget() {
    let items = 100_000;
    // The core count is host-dependent, so compare against `threads_for`.
    let unbounded = threads_for(items, 1);
    // Zero scratch counts as one byte, so the budget does not limit the count.
    assert_eq!(threads_for_scratch(items, 1, 0), unbounded);
    // A scratch of the full budget allows at most two threads.
    // This detects removal of the bound only on hosts with more than two cores.
    assert_eq!(threads_for_scratch(items, 1, SCRATCH_BUDGET), unbounded.min(2));
    // Below the minimum item count, one thread, whatever the scratch size.
    assert_eq!(threads_for_scratch(10, 256, 0), 1);
}

Add a unit test beside the `threads_for_rows` test that exercises
`threads_for_scratch` against `threads_for` as a host-independent baseline:
verify zero scratch preserves the unbounded count, a full `SCRATCH_BUDGET`
limits the result to at most two threads, and fewer than the minimum items
yields one thread regardless of scratch size.

…em on several threads too

From the review of opengeos#1377: on several threads try_map_on counted a batch of 16 items at once and
looked at Cancel only before each batch, so with items that take long (a large zone) the progress
bar lagged and Cancel waited for up to 16 of them per thread. Both are now done after and before
each item, as on one thread; the count is one shared atomic add an item.

On the review of d261f3f: right, the small-zone row was measured before the two-mask budget. Re-measured on 862adc0, both rows now run on 6 threads on that 25 M-cell raster: 20,000 small zones 0.40 s → 0.10 s, 2,000 large zones 3.13 s → 0.60 s. The table says so. A direct threads_for_scratch test and a zonal Cancel test are left for the release quality pass.

Code review

Scope: 2 files, 97 added and 34 removed lines (crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs, crates/analysis/src/tools.rs). I checked the changed code against parallel.rs, control.rs, rasterops.rs (polygon_mask_with_failures, zonal_statistics_with_failures), the existing threads_for_rows convention, and the crate lint block. I found no bugs and no crash paths.

Bugs

  • None found. The zone result order, the messages, the per-zone summing order, and the Cancel handling on both the single-thread and multi-thread paths look correct. Mask storage is Vec<bool> (1 byte per cell), so the 2 × width × height estimate is a valid upper bound on the bounding-box mask plus its trimmed copy. Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, indexing, or unsafe in non-test code. Arithmetic is saturating and the scratch divisor is clamped to at least 1. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • Cancel is checked and progress is advanced with one shared atomic per item in try_map_on. This is negligible for zones and Near searches, but it could contend on the cache line for very cheap items in other try_map callers. Confidence: low.
  • The thread cap is set by the worst-case zone (a raster-sized mask per thread), so many small zones on a large raster get only 6 threads on a 16-core machine. This is a deliberate trade-off that the PR measures. Confidence: medium, as a note only.

Quality

  • parallel.rs:34: the threads_for_scratch doc says the budget is not exceeded, but the 1 + allows one extra mask. Posted as an inline comment with a suggestion. Confidence: high on the arithmetic.
  • tools.rs:5015: .filter(|&r| r < poly_ds.features.len()) is redundant because rows() already filters out-of-range indices. The author already noted this for the release quality pass. Confidence: high.
  • threads_for_scratch has no unit test, while its sibling threads_for_rows does. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Test code uses unwrap and panic!, which matches the existing tests in these files. No wasm regression: the browser path still returns one thread. Confidence: high.

Prior reviews

  • I left 3 earlier concerns alone because they are already raised and resolved:
    • chunking the retained ZoneStats (declined, and the reviewer accepted the decision);
    • progress counted per batch (now fixed in 862adc0);
    • the mask's trimmed copy not being counted (now fixed in d261f3f3).
