feat(ui): the Classification Wizard and Deep Learning run in the background (#1291 step 3) - #1412
On the desktop, the Analysis pane's Classification Wizard (k-means, raster.classify) and Deep Learning (dl.classify: Train And Classify, or Classify with a saved model) ran on the UI thread. The window froze until they finished, with no progress and no way to cancel. They now run on a thread of their own, on #1404's mechanism, with their progress and Cancel under the pane's inputs, one at a time. Their work still spreads over the cores (k-means' labelling since #1384, the network's prediction since #1365). The web app runs them inline as before.
How
The split: both commands are split as Viewshed and Interpolate are. What they read of the session is taken when they start: the raster, and either the training polygons (their outlines and classes) and the model's settings, or the saved model. The pixels under the polygons are sampled on the thread. The classes, their layer (class colours, embedded GeoTIFF) and, for Deep Learning, the trained model are made on the thread (imagery::classify_work, deeplearning::classify_work). The command adds the layer when run again with {"ran": id}. Run without ran, the commands work as they did.
workflows::Made now carries the finished layer instead of the raster and its bytes, so a command can style it on the thread. It also carries what the command does once the layer is added (Then).
The model:
A model trained on the thread is kept in the project only when its classes are added. A cancelled run keeps none.
A model given no name is named then, against the project's models at that moment, so it never replaces a model trained or imported while it ran.
A model given a name replaces one of that name, as before.
ran: a raster handed over with ran is taken only by the command that made it.
Record Task records both without ran, so a replay classifies, and trains, again.
Georeference is not included. The pane's Fit To Map View and Apply Control Points only place the raster anew (its pixels copied under a new transform), which is quick. The warp, which is slow, isn't reachable from the pane.
Tests
raster_classes_run_on_another_thread (engine):
for both commands, the classes handed over from a thread are the ones the command makes directly, bit for bit, with the same class colours; for Deep Learning, the same legend, accuracy and model name;
the other command refuses the raster;
a model trained on the thread is kept only when its classes land;
an unnamed model doesn't replace one kept while it trained;
a cancelled training keeps no model, and a class whose polygons miss the raster is said when the run ends.
a_raster_made_on_a_thread_is_recorded_as_its_command (UI): all four background commands are recorded without ran.
The existing Deep Learning and k-means tests pass unchanged.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Classification Wizard and Deep Learning classification can run as background tasks, with progress updates and an option to cancel. Tasks run one at a time.
Classification results include a class legend. Deep Learning models are kept when results are applied, and automatically named models avoid replacing models added while a task is running.
Deep Learning training reports an error when a class has fewer than five valid pixels.
Documentation
Updated the analysis guide with background classification and Deep Learning details, including cancellation behavior and how to open the Viewshed tool.
…ground (opengeos#1291 step 3)
From the Analysis pane on the desktop, k-means classes (raster.classify)
and a deep learning classification (dl.classify, training a model first
when asked) ran on the UI thread. They now run on a thread of their own,
with progress and Cancel, as Viewshed and Interpolate do since opengeos#1404.
- Their work is split as those commands' is: what they read of the
session is taken when they start (the raster, and the training
polygons' samples or the saved model), the classes and their layer
(class colours, GeoTIFF) are made on the thread, and the command adds
the layer when run again with {"ran": id}.
- workflows::Made now carries the layer itself, and what the command does
once it is added: a model trained on the thread is kept in the project
then, so a cancelled run keeps none.
- Record Task records both without ran, so a replay classifies (and
trains) again.
Raster and deep-learning classification now run through background workflows. These workflows prepare styled raster layers and apply them to the project. Desktop task recording, tests, and documentation cover the added commands.
Workflow results hold a prepared raster layer and can run an optional action after adding it. Imagery uses a shared helper to create class-styled layers.
Deferred classification work crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/deeplearning.rs, crates/analysis/src/neural.rs
Raster classification validates inputs and defers k-means execution. Deep-learning training separates preparation from fitting and checks for cancellation while sampling. Deep-learning classification prepares or fits a model, builds a styled result, and stores a newly trained model after the result is applied.
Background dispatch and task recording crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
Background dispatch and the desktop pane support both classification commands. Task recording removes the internal ran parameter.
Workflow validation and documentation crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Tests cover result handoff, model handling, cancellation, and classification output. The guide describes background processing and cancellation behavior.

Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Summary, Testing, and Related issue. It explains the split of the two commands, the model retention and naming rules, the ran parameter, and the Record Task behaviour. The Testing section lists the engine test, the UI test, and the existing tests. The UI evidence section is missing. The author does not mark it as 'No visible UI change' even though the change runs the panes on a background thread with a new progress and Cancel control under the pane inputs, which is a visible UI change. The Related issue section names #1291 and #1404 only in prose, and no 'Part of' or 'Closes' line appears in the expected form.
Resolution
Replace the 'No visible UI change.' line in the UI evidence section, or remove it, because the PR adds a progress indicator and a Cancel control to the Analysis pane. Add before and after screenshots of the Classification Wizard and Deep Learning panes (after-only is fine for the new progress and Cancel controls). Also fill the Related issue section with a line such as 'Part of #1291' in the template format. The Summary and Testing sections are already adequate.

A rabbit watched the pixels sort, Then queued the work to run. The classes found their colors, The model joined when done. At Cancel, the sampling paused, And moonlit maps were spun.
No bugs found. I checked the ran replay path, the auto-naming of unnamed models (free_name at land time, then store), the cancel path, and the raster_land/made_or_ran ownership checks. Nothing I found is wrong. Confidence: high.
Security
Nothing found. ran is validated (as_u64, id lookup, name check). Confidence: high.
Performance
Polygon sampling for dl.classify with training still runs on the UI thread in raster_start (deeplearning.rs:270, inline comment posted). Each polygon's grid search can visit up to about 4 million cells, and it is not cancellable. Confidence: medium.
Quality (nits, grouped; per AGENTS.md these can wait for the release quality pass)
classify_work (deeplearning.rs:266-276) uses Result<Training, _> as an either type, with auto cloned out of t and then moved back in. A small enum would read better. Confidence: high.
The doc comment on made_or_ran's sibling RasterRun (workflows.rs:196-200) wraps mid-phrase ("started to make it" then "on another thread"). Confidence: high.
The cancel claim ("a cancelled run keeps none") has no test. raster_classes_run_on_another_thread covers the other paths. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
The PR changes visible UI (progress and Cancel now appear under the Classification Wizard and Deep Learning) but has no screenshots. AGENTS.md asks for before and after screenshots for changed UI, and after-only for new UI. Confidence: medium-high.
I left 0 earlier concerns alone, because prior-reviews.json has no threads.

The new background training closure relies on Training::fit and neural::train cooperating with run_under's cancellation control. If training does not check that control during epochs, the new Cancel button cannot interrupt a long fit.
Training continues consuming CPU, and the pane cannot start another job until it finishes.
This can occur when: A user cancels Train And Classify during a lengthy model fit.

Routing dl.classify through the existing background landing path may allow a cancelled successful result to be applied: land_job handles Ok(made) without checking job.control.is_cancelled(). The same risk applies to the new raster.classify route.
A class layer can appear despite cancellation; Train And Classify can also retain the newly trained model.
This can occur when: The user clicks Cancel after the work's last cancellation check, or after it finishes but before the UI lands its result.

Test gap: the new handoff test always runs with an uncancelled Control and lands successful results directly. An implementation that applies an already-completed result after the user presses Cancel would still pass.
The test suite would miss an unexpectedly added class layer or retained model after cancellation.
This can occur when: Cancellation occurs after worker success but before the UI completion poll.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Test gap: the recording test supplies only layer and ran. A broken recorder that drops Deep Learning's training, classField, or model parameters while removing ran would still satisfy its assertion.
The recorded task could fail on replay or classify with the wrong model without this test detecting the regression.
This can occur when: A Train And Classify or saved-model background result is recorded with parameters beyond layer.

Test gap: the new renderer assertion checks only that inline and background classifications have equal styles. If class_layer ceased assigning the Harbour unique-value renderer, both paths could use the same incorrect default style and pass.
Class colours could disappear without this new test failing.
This can occur when: A regression removes class-specific styling from the shared class_layer helper.

raster_start calls deeplearning::classify_work before spawning the worker. On a training run, that builder calls training, which extracts polygon samples on the UI thread rather than in the cancellable work closure.
The desktop pane can freeze before it displays a running job or offers Cancel, despite the command being routed to background execution.
This can occur when: Train And Classify is started with large training polygons or many training features whose sample extraction takes substantial time.

The new background saved-model path relies on neural::classify checking the run's cancellation control while classifying pixels. If it does not, Cancel may not interrupt inference even when no training is involved.
The job continues occupying the pane and computing after cancellation.
This can occur when: A user classifies a large raster with a saved model and clicks Cancel during pixel inference.

The deferred k-means closure relies on rasterops::kmeans checking the background run's cancellation control. If its iteration or parallel workers do not check it, the newly exposed Cancel control cannot stop a lengthy Classification Wizard run.
The classification continues consuming CPU and prevents another pane job from starting until it returns.
This can occur when: A user cancels k-means classification on a large raster while iterations are running.

…s thread
The pixels under the training polygons were sampled when a run started,
on the UI thread, which a training layer of many polygons could freeze
for a while, with no Cancel. They are now sampled as part of the work;
only the polygons, their classes and the model's settings are read when
it starts. A class whose polygons miss the raster is said when the run
ends.
Also: the model a classification uses is an enum, not a Result; tests
that a cancelled training keeps no model.
PR #1412 moves the Classification Wizard (k-means) and Deep Learning classification onto a background thread. The new Made/Then/ran flow is consistent, and the earlier thread's concern about UI-thread sampling is addressed. I could not compile or run the tests here (no build tool), so the compile and test status is unverified.
Bugs
Cancel is not honoured while polygons are sampled (medium confidence). polygon_samples in crates/analysis/src/neural.rs has no cancellation check. Each polygon can take up to about 4 million visits, each calling polygon_contains, and this runs for every training polygon before the first epoch. Cancel only takes effect at training's epoch check. No model is kept in either case, so this is a responsiveness gap against the "progress and Cancel" the PR promises, not a data bug. Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/cmd/deeplearning.rs:179.
Security
None found. The ran parameter is validated by id and command name in made_or_ran.
Performance
training() clones every polygon's rings on the UI thread (deeplearning.rs:233), so a large training layer still costs a copy per run. This is much cheaper than the sampling that moved off the thread, so low severity.
Quality
trained: Option<Option<String>> in classify_work (deeplearning.rs around line 183) is hard to read. An enum or a named struct would be clearer.
The test "a cancelled training keeps no model" cancels before the run starts, so run_under returns early and the test never reaches training (low confidence). Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:25853.
AGENTS.md
The Classification Wizard and Deep Learning panes now show a progress row with Cancel where they had none. AGENTS.md asks for before/after screenshots for visible UI changes, and the PR body says there is "no new UI to show" and includes none (medium confidence).
The rest of the diff follows the rules I checked: no unwrap or expect in non-test code, errors for unusable input, and the new labels pass through existing translation paths.
Earlier concerns: one prior thread (UI-thread sampling) was already resolved and is addressed by 93fa0ce, so I did not re-raise it. The new cancellation gap is a separate point the thread's answer does not cover.
Change size
Compared with the base branch (merge base 047f7f0 to PR head 93fa0ce).
…ps when cancelled
Deep Learning's sampling of its training polygons now goes through
neural::training_samples, which counts the polygons for the pane's
progress and stops between polygons when the run is cancelled;
polygon_samples stops between rows. Cancel took effect only once the
first epoch began.
The test of a cancelled training now cancels the run once it is under
way, not before it starts.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low confidence):training runs on the UI thread before the run starts, and this line copies every training polygon's rings (rings.clone()), so the copy's cost and a second in-memory copy of the training geometry scale with the layer's total vertex count. The sampling that was the real freeze has moved to the run's thread, so this is minor. It's worth a look only for training layers with very many or very large polygons, or if the PR text says the UI thread does only the reading. If it matters, the layer's geometry could be shared (for example an Arc) instead of copied.
I read the full diff (8 files), the prior review threads, and the surrounding code in control.rs, parallel.rs, neural.rs, workflows.rs, deeplearning.rs and imagery.rs. I found no bugs, crash paths, silent data loss or AGENTS.md violations in the changed lines.
Checked and found sound:
Cancellation:polygon_samples checks per row, and training_samples checks per polygon. A cancelled training returns an error before Then runs, so no model is kept. If cancel lands during epoch training, classify_on stops at its first row through for_each_row.
Thread-local control:training_samples runs on the worker thread under run_under, so begin, check and advance act on the right run.
Model naming: the auto-name is recomputed in Then at land time, and store uses the same case-insensitive match as free_name.
Index safety: the *v as usize - 1 in classify is guarded by v >= 1.0.
Output shape: the dl.classify and raster.classify responses keep their keys.
Recording:lib.rs strips ran when recording.
Test coverage: the new test covers both commands, the foreign-raster refusal, model keep/drop, cancel and the unmatched-class error.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found.
Performance
crates/engine/src/cmd/deeplearning.rs:224: training copies every polygon's rings on the UI thread before the run starts. The copy is linear in total vertices and much cheaper than the sampling that was moved off the UI thread, so this is minor. Confidence: low. Inline comment posted.
Quality
crates/analysis/src/neural.rs:131: the (Vec<Vec<Coord>>, usize, usize) tuple is repeated in three places and needs #[allow(clippy::type_complexity)]. A named type alias would remove the allow. Confidence: medium. Left for the release quality pass.
The cancel test in tests.rs (around line 25856) only assumes the run is still going when cancel() is called. A run that finishes first would fail with an empty error, but 500 epochs make that very unlikely. Confidence: low. Not posted.
AGENTS.md
No violations. New user-visible strings are passed as labels to the pane, and the engine's error text follows the existing convention of English-only messages.
Prior review threads
Three earlier concerns were already raised: sampling on the UI thread, cancel not honoured during sampling, and the cancel test's early return. Each thread is resolved and outdated, and the code now addresses it. I left all three alone.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR, merge base 047f7f0 to head 78d633e.
Make the cancellation test show that training stops early.
The test cancels as soon as control.progress() returns any value. Sampling publishes progress before training starts, so the cancel can land during sampling. A cancel during sampling and a cancel during training return the same "was cancelled" error and leave dl_models empty. When the cancel lands during training, a train that ignores cancellation still completes and still passes these assertions, because run_under discards the result whenever the flag is set.
Wait for progress reported by the training step, and cancel after training has started. Then assert that the run stopped before it completed all epochs, using the progress reported in the error or a similar progress check. Avoid an elapsed-time limit, because it depends on scheduling. A fixed percentage bound can also fail when training finishes before the cancel arrives.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/tests.rs at line 25856:
Update the cancellation test around control.progress() to wait for a signal
specific to the training step before cancelling, rather than cancelling on any
progress update. Assert from the cancellation error or another reliable progress
check that training stopped before completing all epochs; do not rely on elapsed
time or a fixed percentage bound.
Add a unit test for cancellation between rows in polygon_samples.
The row-level check in polygon_samples (crates/analysis/src/neural.rs:188-190) has no test. The engine cancellation test cancels once progress starts. It passes with or without this check. Removing the check changes only latency: cancellation then waits for the current polygon to finish sampling.
Cancellation state is read per thread. A unit test can install a cancelled control on its own thread, then call polygon_samples on a polygon with many rows. The check at the start of the first row returns before any row is sampled, so the call should return an empty result. Without the check, the call should return samples. The test then fails on regression.
Classification change
This is coverage for newly added, working behavior. It is a refactor-priority item, not a trivial style note. The original classification is changed to suggest_optional_refactor because the gap affects only cancellation latency within one polygon.
