feat(ui): the Analysis pane's single-pass raster tools run in the background (#1291 step 3) - #1416
Part of #1291 step 3: the Analysis pane's single-pass raster tools stop blocking the UI thread.
What runs in the background now
On the desktop these read their inputs when you click Run, make their raster on a thread of their own with progress and Cancel, and land through their command again with {"ran": id}. That is the same path Viewshed, Interpolate, the Classification Wizard and Deep Learning use since #1404 and #1412, so undo, History, the macro recorder and the project/map rules behave the same:
Raster Functions (raster.function) and Function Editor chains (raster.functionChain)
Suitability Modeler (analysis.suitability)
Change Detection (raster.change)
Classification Tools, from training polygons (raster.classifySupervised)
Indices (raster.index)
Process: clip and resample (raster.process)
a workspace's Build Mosaic (imagery.mosaic)
Edit Pixels stays immediate: it is an edit made by hand.
Changes
One table.IN_BACKGROUND in cmd/workflows.rs names every command that makes its raster this way, what it is called and what it reads of the session. raster_start, made_or_ran, the pane's background() and the recorder's ran stripping all read it, so a command can't be added in one place and missed in another. The per-command name constants are gone.
Read, then work. Each command is split into *_work(s, p), which reads the session (Arcs of the rasters, the polygons, the view extent for Clip To Map View, the workspace), and a closure that makes the raster without the session.
Cancel and progress in the kernels (rasterops):
A new per_index helper runs a per-cell pass on parallel::for_each_row, so it is counted, cancellable and spread over the cores.
remap, weighted overlay, minimum-distance classification, the change comparison, clip and the block-mean resample use it.
New class_means (the training classes' means) counts rows and stops when cancelled.
New mosaic takes over the engine's mosaic loop and runs its rows on several cores.
One answer shape. A command's answer is now always the added layer's (id, size, bands) plus what it says besides. Before, a clip to polygons that had warnings answered with only layer and messages.
Tests
raster_tools_run_on_another_thread runs each command here and on a thread and compares them: bit-identical pixels, the same extra keys (class legend, clip messages), the layer's size in the answer, and a cancelled run's error.
single_passes_stop_when_cancelled checks progress and cancel for remap, weighted overlay, minimum-distance classification, class_means and mosaic, and that class_means matches zonal_means.
The recorder test covers the new commands.
The user guide's background-runs paragraph (analysis.md) lists the new tools.
Inputs are now all checked when a run starts, so a command with two bad inputs may name a different one first than it did; the messages themselves are unchanged.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
More raster and imagery tools can run in the background, including raster functions and function chains, suitability analysis, change detection, classification, indices, clipping, resampling, mosaics, and deep learning tasks.
Background runs display progress and can be cancelled. Results and errors are presented consistently.
Mosaic generation can select the first available pixel value or average available values.
Classification using training polygons can combine polygons with the same class when calculating class statistics.
Documentation
Updated the desktop analysis guide with the expanded list of background tools and run controls.
…kground (opengeos#1291 step 3)
Raster Functions, Function Editor chains, Suitability Modeler, Change
Detection, Classification Tools (from training polygons), Indices, Process
(clip and resample) and a workspace's Build Mosaic now read their inputs on
the UI thread and make their raster on a thread of their own, with progress
and Cancel, landing through the command again with {"ran": id} as Viewshed
and the classifications do.
One table in workflows (IN_BACKGROUND) names the commands that run this
way, what they are called and what they read; raster_start, made_or_ran,
the pane and the recorder all read it. A command's answer is the added
layer's (id, size, bands) with what it says besides.
Remap, weighted overlay, minimum-distance classification, the change
comparison, clip and block-mean resample go through rasterops::per_index:
counted, cancellable, rows on several cores. The training classes' means
and the mosaic's resampling are counted and cancellable too (the mosaic on
several cores). Edit Pixels stays immediate.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Raster operations add chunked processing, cancellation-aware statistics, and mosaic sampling. Raster-producing engine commands use a shared background-workflow registry. The desktop UI selects and records registered commands, and tests cover background execution.

Summary
Raster processing and statistics crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
Adds chunked indexed processing, cancellation-aware means, class means, and mosaic sampling. Tests check progress, cancellation, and agreement between class means and zonal means.
Shared workflow dispatch and raster functions crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/deeplearning.rs
Adds shared command registration and background dispatch. Raster functions, function chains, and suitability prepare raster work for that path. Deep-learning classification dispatches by command ID.
Change detection, supervised classification, indices, clipping, resampling, and workspace mosaics return deferred workflow results. Mosaic generation uses the rasterops sampler.
Desktop selection and background-run validation crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Desktop command selection and task recording use the shared registry. Tests compare background and synchronous results, and the guide lists background-run tools.

The background workflows are mergeable with awareness of remaining memory overhead for unusually tall mosaics and delayed cancellation during expensive rows. Empty-band classification and missing-band change detection now fail during startup.

Explanation
The description follows the template's required sections (Summary, Testing, UI evidence, Related issue). The Summary explains the change and its rationale in detail. The Testing section names the new tests and the recorder coverage. The UI evidence section says there is no visible UI change, which matches the template's option for that case. The Related issue section cites #1291 step 3 in the summary but does not add a 'Part of #1291' line under the Related issue heading. The template also suggests the commands used for verification, such as cargo xtask ci, but the description does not state whether CI was run.

I read the full diff, the new kernels in rasterops.rs, the control and parallel helpers they depend on, the made_or_ran/raster_start plumbing, and the pane wiring. I found no crash paths, no silent data loss, and no wasm break. The deeplearning module isn't cfg-gated, so the unconditional IN_BACKGROUND const compiles on wasm. I haven't built or run the tests; those checks are from reading the code only.
Prior threads: none existed on this PR, so nothing was left alone.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Security
None found. The new internal ran key is checked by command name, and the stored result is consumed only once.
Performance
supervised_work clones every training ring and class key up front (rings.clone()), where the old code borrowed them. This adds memory for large training sets. Low confidence on impact; fixing it needs shared ownership (Arc), so I did not post a suggestion.
Quality
Progress resets for each band or step. per_index calls control::begin every time, so multi-band clip/resample, multi-step chains and multi-criterion suitability restart the bar at 0. Posted inline on rasterops.rs:110. Confidence about 60%; I didn't check how the pane draws the bar.
Test coverage gap: MIN_ROW_WORK is 200k cells, and both new tests use grids below it. So the threaded branches of per_index and mosaic are never exercised, even though the test doc says "bit-identical" across threads. This is a coverage point, so it can wait for the release quality pass.
Doc wrap nits: the paragraph at workflows.rs:216 runs to about 150 columns; docs/user-guide/analysis.md around line 1235 is also unevenly wrapped. Posted the first inline, marked <!-- quality-sweep -->.
AGENTS.md
The PR body says "Inputs are now all checked when a run starts", but some are checked only inside the work: band_of in function_work, the polygon mask in process_work, and band_math for indices. The errors still surface, so this is a stated-contract mismatch, not a data bug.
All other points checked out: no unwrap/expect/panic in the new non-test code; tl! is used for the new interface text; ran is documented as internal; the ribbon and docs were updated; and the layering rules hold.
Already raised: 0 earlier concerns (no prior review threads).

Check cancellation inside the column loop in means_under.
means_under checks for cancellation only once per raster row. A row can take long enough to delay Cancel when the training polygon has many vertices.
Use the each_row check for row boundaries and a separate cell-level check, so progress counts stay per row.

Reject an empty bands array in supervised_work.
With "bands": [], the command accepts the empty band list. Every cell is then assigned the first class, and the raster is added as a layer. classify_work already rejects this input with "give at least one band". Add the same check after bands_param in supervised_work.

crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:813-814 Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Build the row slices without one heap allocation per row.
rasterops::mosaic builds lines: Vec<Vec<&mut [f32]>> with one inner Vec per output row, before control::begin(rows) and before any cancellation check. The workspace guard in mosaic_work caps only cols × rows (at max_pixels() / 2), not the row count. A one-column mosaic can therefore have about max_pixels() / 2 rows. Each row then costs a Vec header, a heap allocation, and one slice reference per band. That overhead can exceed the pixel buffers several times over, and it is not counted in the 16-byte-per-cell budget that sets max_pixels(). Use a flat slice layout, or build the row slices inside the parallel loop, so the build does not allocate one Vec per row up front.

Minor · Move training-polygon collection off the UI thread, or bound its size. · imagery.rs:660
crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:660 Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff
Move training-polygon collection off the UI thread, or bound its size.
supervised_work copies every training ring into polygons on the UI thread. This happens inside raster_start, before the job thread is spawned. The copy grows with the total vertex count of the training layer, and nothing caps that count. A very large training layer can therefore freeze the UI before the cancellable job appears.
Related context
The PR moves class_means into the background closure. The old code ran zonal_means over every training ring on the UI thread, so the UI-thread work is smaller than before. This copy is a residual cost, not a new one.

Move the per-ring copying in supervised_work’s polygons.extend collection out of

enforce a meaningful bound on collected training data before copying, while
preserving existing training-polygon behavior within that bound.
Minor · Check the cancel flag inside wide raster rows. · rasterops.rs:111-114
crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:111-114 Minor · Performance & Scalability · Low value
Check the cancel flag inside wide raster rows.
per_index checks Cancel once per chunk. On the single-thread path, the check runs before each chunk. On the threaded path, it runs between batches of rows. The callers pass the raster width as the chunk size, so one chunk is one row. The cell loop never checks the flag, so on a very wide raster, Cancel can wait until a full row is written.
Check the flag inside the cell loop every few thousand cells, and stop writing when the run is cancelled. Then check once more after for_each_row returns. A check inside the loop can stop a row early on the single-thread path, which runs no check after its last row. Without the final check, per_index would return partial output as Ok.

Cover count-weighted merging in the class_means test.
class_means combines polygons that share a class key with a count-weighted mean. The changed test in single_passes_stop_when_cancelled gives its two polygons different keys, "a" and "b", so the merge branch never runs. Changing the merge to an unweighted average would not fail any assertion in this test.
Add a case with two polygons under one class key and unequal covered-cell counts. Assert the count-weighted mean.

Extend the class_means coverage in single_passes_stop_when_cancelled with two
polygons sharing the same class key but covering unequal numbers of cells, and
assert that their merged mean is weighted by covered-cell counts. Keep the
existing distinct-key assertions intact.
The method: "percent" case in raster_tools_run_on_another_thread compares only pixel bits between the synchronous and background runs, the non-layer answer keys, and the width and bands types. Both runs use the same percent formula, so a wrong formula would produce matching outputs and the test would still pass. No other test asserts a percent value. The difference check at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:7292-7294 covers only its own branch.
Add an assertion after the percent raster.change call that checks the result against an expected value. dem_later is dem + 10, so each valid pixel with a nonzero dem value x should equal 1000 / x. You can check one known pixel, or the layer mean in the style of the difference check.

Empty bands in supervised_work: fixed in 859ff8c. "bands": [] is refused ("give at least one band"); before, every pixel came out as class 1. Tested.
Cancel inside means_under's column loop, and inside wide rows in per_index: left as is. A row is the unit every raster pass here checks at (for_each_row, per_cell, terrain), so a cancel waits at most one row, and rows are bounded by max_pixels.
One Vec of band slices per mosaic row: left as is. It is rows small allocations (one pointer per band) before a pass that reads every image for every cell.
Training polygons collected on the UI thread: left as is. This is a clone of the layer's polygon rings, like Deep Learning's training, and it is cheap next to the work that moves to the thread (a full raster scan per polygon). Reading them later would race edits made meanwhile.
I read the full diff, the base AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in workflows.rs, imagery.rs, rasterops.rs, analysispane.rs, and lib.rs. I did not build or run the tests (no shell access for cargo), so compile correctness rests on reading. I found no crash path, no unsafe input handling, and no silent data loss introduced by the change.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked the moved closures' Send and borrow shapes, per_index and mosaic chunking with zero widths, the cancellation paths, and that the answer shape stays additive (layer, width, height, bands, plus extras). Each is correct as far as I can tell by reading.
Security
None found. The inputs are session-bound and the new code clamps or guards its sizes.
Performance
Low: supervised_work clones every training ring and class key into polygons (needed for Send). This is linear in training size, so the cost is acceptable. No action needed.
Quality
Nits for the release quality pass, grouped here as one note. docs/user-guide/analysis.md has lines well past 100 columns in the new background-tools paragraph (the "Classification Tools" and "Process" lines) and an uneven wrap near "so does the map's right-click". The analysispane.rs doc comment on background() has an awkward first line ("Zonal Statistics, and those that make a raster").
AGENTS.md
Pre-existing, but in the block this PR restructures: class_means (crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:771) leaves a training class with no pixels out of the legend with no notice. "Never silent" asks that a skipped feature be reported. Confidence about 60%, since it predates this PR. Consider a notice in a follow-up.
Test coverage gap, posted inline at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:25860: the PR says the thread-vs-here test compares clip messages, but its fixture never produces any, so that comparison holds trivially. Confidence about 70%.
Prior reviews
Three earlier threads on this PR. I left the progress-reset concern alone, since the author answered it and I agree a per-step begin matches the existing tools. The rewrap nit is addressed. The change_work band check on after is in the diff at imagery.rs (the bfr.bands.get(band) line), so that thread is resolved in the code. In total I left 3 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised or answered.

IN_BACKGROUNDincmd/workflows.rsnames every command that makes its raster this way, what it is called and what it reads of the session.raster_start,made_or_ran, the pane'sbackground()and the recorder'sranstripping all read it, so a command can't be added in one place and missed in another. The per-command name constants are gone.*_work(s, p), which reads the session (Arcs of the rasters, the polygons, the view extent for Clip To Map View, the workspace), and a closure that makes the raster without the session.rasterops):per_indexhelper runs a per-cell pass onparallel::for_each_row, so it is counted, cancellable and spread over the cores.class_means(the training classes' means) counts rows and stops when cancelled.mosaictakes over the engine's mosaic loop and runs its rows on several cores.layerandmessages.Tests
raster_tools_run_on_another_threadruns each command here and on a thread and compares them: bit-identical pixels, the same extra keys (class legend, clip messages), the layer's size in the answer, and a cancelled run's error.single_passes_stop_when_cancelledchecks progress and cancel for remap, weighted overlay, minimum-distance classification,class_meansandmosaic, and thatclass_meansmatcheszonal_means.The user guide's background-runs paragraph (analysis.md) lists the new tools.
Inputs are now all checked when a run starts, so a command with two bad inputs may name a different one first than it did; the messages themselves are unchanged.
