feat(layout): a colour and a fill for the scale bar - #1452
A layout's scale bar was always drawn in dark grey with white light blocks, so on a dark basemap it and its numbers could hardly be seen. It now has two colours, as the north arrow does:
Color: its lines, the alternating bar's dark divisions and its labels (default #222222, as before).
Fill: the alternating bar's light divisions (default white, as before).
They are set with "color" and "fill" in layout.addElement and layout.update, and with two colour buttons in the scale bar's properties. Fill is shown only for the alternating style, the one that draws light divisions. Saved projects open as before (serde defaults), and both colours are saved and drawn the same way in PNG, PDF and SVG, which all go through draw_page.
layout::color now refuses a colour that isn't text ("fill": 5, "color": [255, 0, 0]) instead of ignoring it without a word; null still means "not given". This also covers the north arrow, rectangles, ellipses, lines, text and publication accents, which shared the gap.
Testing
checks.sh (fmt, clippy -D warnings, nextest on the whole workspace, doctests, layers): 4070 of 4071 tests pass. The one failure, service_logins::an_oversized_ogc_items_binding_is_refused_before_native_fetch, is unrelated (a local HTTP fixture); it passed in the previous full run and 5 of 5 times on its own.
New and extended tests:
map: a scale bar saved without colours opens with today's defaults.
render: scale_bars_draw_in_their_colours checks the bar's divisions and labels come out in the given colour and fill, with no default ink left.
engine: layout_surrounds_take_cartographic_options adds and updates the colours (one given leaves the other alone), keeps a fill's alpha (#00000080), and refuses "red", "#12", 5 and [255, 0, 0].
ui_shot before and after (below).
UI evidence
Before: the scale bar is dark grey whatever the command asks, and its properties have no colours.
After: the bar in the colour and fill given, and Color and Fill in its properties.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Scale bars now store separate ink and fill colors. Layout commands can set and update them, the renderer uses them, and the properties pane exposes color controls. Older scale bars retain the default colors.

Explanation
Only one direct link applies: #1451. It has no active parent context. Its coding requirements, and the code that meets each one:
[#1451] Scale bar color for lines, dark divisions and labels, default #222222. The model default is ink() (#222222) in crates/map/src/layout.rs (ElementKind::ScaleBar). In crates/render/src/layout.rs, scale_bar now takes dark from the element's color through the colors tuple. The former fixed Rgba::rgb(0x22,0x22,0x22) declaration is removed. Test scale_bars_draw_in_their_colours checks red dark divisions and red labels, and no default ink in the bar row or label rows. The line strokes use the same dark binding as the divisions. No test checks the line strokes directly.
[#1451] Scale bar fill for the alternating bar's light divisions, default white. The render uses light for odd divisions. The model default is white(). Test scale_bars_draw_in_their_colours checks blue fill divisions. Test a_page_draws_its_scale_bar_in_its_colours checks the same through draw_page.
[#1451] Settable through layout.addElement and the element update command. crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs documents color and fill for scaleBar in both commands. restyle reads both values through color() and keeps the current value when a key is absent or null. Test layout_surrounds_take_cartographic_options covers add, update, independent updates and alpha. The issue names layout.setElement. The repository's element update command is layout.update, and the PR uses that name. This is treated as a naming mismatch, not a gap.
[#1451] Saved projects keep their look. The new fields use serde defaults. The map test that loads {"ScaleBar":{"frame":3}} checks the defaults.
[#1451] Two colour buttons in the scale bar properties, with Fill shown only for the alternating style. The diff of crates/ui-egui/src/layoutview.rs was inspected in this review. It always shows Color. It shows Fill only when style == ScaleBarStyle::Alternating. Both buttons send layout.update with color or fill set to the hex value. This requirement is met.
[#1451] Both colours saved and exported in PNG, PDF and SVG. The fields belong to the serialized ElementKind. The PR states that all formats use draw_page, and the render diff passes the colours through draw_page. Per-format output was not run.
No unmet coding requirement is established. Residual uncertainty: the line-stroke colour (item 1) rests on the shared dark binding and is not tested directly.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed paths relate to #1451: crates/map/src/layout.rs (model fields, defaults, serde test), crates/render/src/layout.rs (scale bar colours and tests), crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs (command parameters, restyle, color() helper), crates/engine/src/tests.rs (command tests), crates/ui-egui/src/layoutview.rs (properties colour buttons, verified in this review) and docs/user-guide/layouts.md (documented color). No changed path lies outside the scale bar feature.
One change reaches beyond the scale bar. color() in crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs now refuses any non-text, non-null value. Before, it ignored such a value. The helper is shared, so the rule now applies to north arrow, rectangle, ellipse, line, text, extent indicator and publication accent colours. #1451 does not request this. The PR discloses it. The new scale bar fields use the same helper, so the rule keeps one parsing behaviour across elements. This is a related, disclosed behaviour change for existing commands that send non-text colours. It is not a demonstrated unrelated change.

Read the diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md, the touched code paths (layout::color and its callers, restyle, update, add_element, the serde defaults, draw_page, the UI properties arm) and the new tests. I did not build or run the tests, so the correctness claims below rest on reading.
Bugs: None found. The color() change refuses non-string values and still treats absent and null as "not given", and the callers I checked (presentation.rs background, grid, extent indicator, shapes) only reach it with string values or the same defaults as before. Shadowing in restyle (let (color, fill) = (color(p, …), …)) is safe because the initialiser resolves before the new bindings. Old saved projects get ink()/white() from serde defaults, which match the previous hard-coded drawing. Label text uses dark, so it follows the new colour.
Security: None found. No new parsing beyond Rgba::from_hex, no unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code, no unsafe.
Performance: None found.
Quality (low confidence, optional):fill is accepted and stored for the stepped and line styles, where nothing draws it. The docs and the UI both say so, so it is not silent, but a script can set a value with no effect and no notice. Either leave it as documented or note it in the reply. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md:
Screenshots (medium-high confidence): the PR body contains only the placeholders <!-- drag 1451-before.png here --> and <!-- drag 1451-after.png here -->, with no images. AGENTS.md requires before and after screenshots for changed UI, and this PR changes the scale bar's properties panel. Attach them, or confirm they were uploaded elsewhere.
Everything else I checked is in line: tl! for the new labels, layering (no egui below L6), hostile_params_never_panic still covers the new params, and the docs update matches the new parameters.
Prior concerns: No review threads exist on this PR (prior-reviews.json is empty), so none were left alone. No inline comments posted, because no finding is strong enough to warrant one.

Add a page-level test for custom scale bar colors.
scale_bars_draw_in_their_colours calls scale_bar directly, so it does not exercise the ElementKind::ScaleBar arm that forwards the stored color and fill. The engine test checks the stored fields and asserts only that layout.export succeeds. A regression that drops the stored colors in that arm would leave the suite passing.
Add a test that renders a layout with a custom-colored scale bar through render_drawing and asserts the expected colors in the output pixels.

Thanks for the reviews. Pushed bee48e8, rebased onto main (a conflict with #1442 in layouts.md: the scale bar's sentence kept, the legend's new list after it).
CodeRabbit, page-level test (crates/render/src/layout.rs): added a_page_draws_its_scale_bar_in_its_colours. It renders a layout with a map frame and a red-on-blue scale bar through render, so through draw_page and the ElementKind::ScaleBar arm, and checks the page above the frame has the bar's colour and fill and none of the default ink.
Claude review:
Screenshots: the before and after pictures are in the description now (they were added after that review ran).
fill on the stepped and line styles: kept as is. It is stored so that switching back to the alternating style brings it back, and the docs, the command description and the properties (Fill shown only for the alternating style) say it is the alternating bar's light divisions.
checks.sh on the rebased branch: fmt, clippy, doctests and layers clean; nextest 4106 of 4106 passed.
Medium confidence: layout.update validates "color" at crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:2989, but the value is only applied to text (around line 3081). A valid colour on a picture, table, chart or legend passes validation and is then dropped without a notice. This is the same silent-ignore the PR says it fixes. Posted inline.
Security
None found. Colour values are parsed with Rgba::from_hex and rejected otherwise. No new file or network input is handled.
Performance
None found.
Quality
Low-medium confidence: "fill" is stored for every scale bar style, but only the alternating style draws it. A "line" or "stepped" bar with a fill is accepted silently. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:2805.
Nit, grouped for the release quality pass: the check at crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:2505 duplicates the refusal that color() now makes. The col match in update (line 2989) could be a single Option chain on color(). Neither changes behaviour.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new strings use tl!, the UI follows the north-arrow colour pattern, and the layout drawing goes through the shared draw_page, so PNG, PDF and SVG all get the change. Tests cover both the accepted and the refused values.
Checked and found fine
The color() contract change only affects values that were previously ignored. Its other callers are the grid, indicator, rectangle, line and publication accent paths, and they all treat null as absent.
Serde defaults keep older projects loading. restyle and update validate before any mutation.
The renderer uses dark for the strokes and labels and light only in the alternating arm. The UI builds the Color and Fill buttons the same way the north arrow does.
Test coverage in the engine and render crates matches the PR's claims. I did not build or run the tests; this review is by reading only.
Earlier concerns: one prior thread, from CodeRabbit, was about layout.update accepting a non-string color silently. The author replied that bee48e8 fixes it, and the diff in the head contains that fix, so I did not raise it again. No other prior threads exist.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 2c93518 to PR head bee48e8), the whole PR.
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
presentation.updatePage still drops a non-text background without a word. crates/engine/src/cmd/presentation.rs:229 gates on ps(p, "background"), so 5 or [255, 0, 0] is ignored. This is the silent drop the PR closes in layout::color, but this call site is outside the diff and predates it. A p.get("background").is_some_and(|v| !v.is_null()) gate would close it. Confidence: high (about 85%).
No bugs found on the changed lines. I checked that color() gives the same results as before for strings and null, that update validates col before anything mutates, that the renderer's labels use dark so the "no ink" tests hold, and that the serde defaults match the old colours.
Security
None found.
Performance
None found.
Quality
The PR description does not mention a behaviour change. presentation.blankPage (crates/engine/src/cmd/presentation.rs:94) now refuses a non-text background through the same color(), where it was silently white before. The change is consistent with the rule, but the PR should say so. Confidence: high, low severity.
crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:2990 calls color(p, "color", Rgba::rgb(0, 0, 0)) only for its validation, with an unused default. if p.get("color").is_some_and(|v| !v.is_null()) reads more directly. Left for the release quality pass. Confidence: high.
The PR reports one failing test (service_logins::an_oversized_ogc_items_binding_is_refused_before_native_fetch) as unrelated. CI on the PR should confirm that.
AGENTS.md
No violations found in the changed lines. The new UI labels go through tl!, no non-test unwrap/panic was added, and the new error paths return errors rather than ignoring input.
The "fill is stored but not drawn on non-alternating bars" thread is answered with reasons the docs and UI support, so I did not raise it again.
Earlier review threads: 3 checked, none raised again. One was fixed and resolved, and two were answered by the author.
This was a read-only review; I did not run the tests.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base 2c93518 to PR head bee48e8).
… a fill
opengeos#1452 gave the scale bar a colour and a fill, so both are allowed for it when adding and
editing (an outline is still refused). Review: the new test has its own doc comment and the
colorbar test has its comment back, the extent indicator's colour is checked on a second
frame, and the doc comment and user-guide paragraph read more plainly.
