Summary

Part of #1330. #1210 (for #1204) reads a window of a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF as a raster layer: layer.addUrl with "bbox". The read blocks where the command runs. In the desktop app, ui.addUrl with "bbox" probed off the frame, and poll_data_downloads then ran the command on the frame, so a slow server or a large window held the UI for up to minutes.

Now the read runs on a thread, and the layer is added when it lands, as a download is. The command line and scripts still wait for it in the command, and see what was added.

#1330 says Command Search gets there, and it doesn't: it opens the Add Data From URL dialog, which has no box. So nothing in the app's menus reaches this part on its own. What does is ui.addUrl given "bbox", and part 2's plugin commands.

This part is the engine split and the app. Part 2 stops refusing "bbox" from a plugin's command, which needs this one. I split it because the whole was over 500 added lines.

Changes

  • rustgis-engine, cmd/layer.rs, following the issue's proposal:
    • read_cog_window(&WindowAsked) -> Result<CogWindow, String>: the header, the level, the box, the bands' values, the raster and its GeoTIFF, with what to say afterwards. It needs no Session.
    • add_window(s, p, CogWindow): keeps the layer in the project and says the notices with the name it got.
    • window_asked(s, p): what the app calls on the frame. It refuses what the command refuses, and settles the box ("view" is the view when it was asked for).
    • layer.addUrl {"bbox"} runs them in turn, as today.
    • layer.addDownload adds a window the app handed over (Session::download_landed_window), and refuses "window" when none landed for its id.
    • A window also refuses service, coverage and bounds, which it would otherwise drop without a word. This holds for layer.addUrl too.
  • rustgis-ui-egui:
    • ui.addUrl with "bbox" starts the read on a thread (UiState::window_reads), with no probe, since a window is a GeoTIFF's or nothing.
    • poll_data_downloads adds what landed through layer.addDownload, so the login tag, Recent, the undo step and the "request" number work as for any download. A failure goes through the same path as a failed download (landed_failed, pulled out of that branch).
    • record_step records a window as the layer.addUrl that reads it, with its box. It is recorded today, and layer.addDownload alone wouldn't be.
    • A frame is asked for while a read runs: it lands after its last tile, with nothing to wake the frame.
  • docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: what the app does with a window.

Choices and known limits

  • One departure from the issue. The issue has add_window build the raster. Here the worker also builds it and writes its GeoTIFF, since writing up to 64 million values is the slow part left after the tiles. Adding it holds the frame only for what add_raster_after does.
  • One window off the frame at a time. Each of the app's threads takes the same lock (WINDOW_TURN), as a window may hold several hundred MB, with 16 under way at most (MAX_WINDOW_READS): the next is refused before its thread starts. A read keeps its turn until the frame has taken what it read, so a frame that stalls holds one window's values, not those of every window asked for. The five-minute limit counts from when its turn comes. The order among those waiting isn't guaranteed.
  • The limits are as they were. The value and band caps and the five-minute overall wait still apply, so a hostile or huge file can't keep a thread forever.
  • Cancelling is a follow-up, as the issue says. A read already under way when its project is closed runs to its end, and isn't added: the notice is the one a late download gives, "downloaded after its project was closed, so it wasn't added". The wording says "downloaded" for a window too.
  • What still waits on the frame. Only ui.addUrl and, in part 2, a plugin's command leave the frame. A task replaying layer.addUrl {"bbox"} and an app.run("layer.addUrl", …) from elsewhere in the app wait as they did, for their own read only: the lock isn't theirs.
  • No status beyond what downloads have. The notice says Reading {url}…, and the status bar's fetch count shows the tiles.
  • A window still waiting when its project closes gives up its place at once and asks nothing of the server, with an error notice (Session::download_under_way, checked each frame). So does one whose id was forgotten past 64 downloads, with its project still open, so the notice names both causes.
  • As for any download. A read that lands after the user moved to another map is added to the active map, and past 64 downloads under way the oldest is forgotten, so it is said to have been left behind by a closed project. Both hold for every download (download_started, layer.addDownload). A window's read takes longer, so it is likelier here, but a fix belongs with all of them.
  • Browser. Nothing changes: the command still refuses "bbox" there.

Tests

  • a_cog_windows_read_is_apart_from_adding_it (engine): the read on another thread changes nothing in the session; the landing adds it with its notices and values; a project opened meanwhile drops it; what can't be a window is refused without the address's keys; a file that can't be read says so without them.
  • a_window_is_read_off_the_frame_and_added_when_it_lands (UI): a slow server holds the window's tiles, and then also its header, while ui.addUrl returns and frames go on, then the layer lands. With ui.addUrl's window path turned off, it fails after 20 s with "the read held the frame".
  • a_window_refused_failed_or_left_behind_is_said (UI): refused at once with no probe, a failed read said once without keys, and a project closed meanwhile.
  • a_window_read_off_the_frame_is_recorded_as_the_command_reading_it (UI).
  • too_many_windows_under_way_are_refused (UI).
  • a_window_waiting_when_its_project_closes_isnt_read (UI): with another read keeping the turn, its place is given up and the server gets no request. With the check turned off, it fails with "its place wasn't given up".
  • the_next_window_waits_for_the_last_to_be_taken (UI): with no frame taking the first, the second isn't read. With the wait turned off, it fails with two windows held.
  • The engine's window tests run on the split as they are.

Run on Windows at this head, on main at b30aefd2:

  • cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings pass.
  • rustgis-ui-egui lib: 680 of 680, in each of two parallel runs.
  • rustgis-engine lib: 773 of 775. Neither failing test reaches a window. mbtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds also failed on main at 523d4d01. mbtiles_archives_become_tile_layers failed once, on a time limit, in a run under load, and I haven't seen it fail on main: it passes alone 20 times of 20 on main at b30aefd2 and here, alternating the two. In earlier runs here pmtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds failed too, as it did on main, and an_oversized_ogc_items_binding_is_refused_before_native_fetch, which run alone failed 10 times of 60 on main at b30aefd2 and 7 of 60 on this branch, with the same messages.

Not run: the wasm32 build (no clang here, so I read its cfg branches by hand, and CI builds it), Linux and macOS outside CI, a real window of the app, and a real MapBiomas file.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…, part 1)

`layer.addUrl` with "bbox" holds the frame while it waits for the file.
Split it: `read_cog_window` reads and writes the raster with no `Session`,
and `add_window` adds it. `ui.addUrl` with "bbox" starts the read on a thread
and `poll_data_downloads` adds what lands through `layer.addDownload`. The
command line and scripts still wait for it in the command.

Walkthrough

Desktop GeoTIFF window requests now use separate validation, reading, and layer-addition steps. The UI runs reads on worker threads and adds completed windows through the session download flow. Recording converts window-backed download results into replayable layer.addUrl commands.

Changes: COG Window Read and Add Flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and read COG windows
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs
Shared URL and window checks settle requests before reading. Read results carry window details and notes that are emitted when the layer is added.
Queue and add completed windows
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The session queues results for active downloads, preserves the queue during project rollback, and removes queued results for rejected downloads. Tests cover reading, addition, validation errors, and project replacement.
Run desktop reads in the background
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md
Desktop window requests run on worker threads and are polled for completion. Recording converts window-backed download results to replayable layer.addUrl commands. Tests and documentation cover asynchronous completion, limits, failures, and project replacement.

Code review

Bugs

  • download_started (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1097) forgets the oldest download id once 64 are under way. A window read takes minutes, so its id is the likeliest to be dropped. When it lands, add_download then says "downloaded after its project was closed", though the project was never closed, and the window is discarded. Low severity, low confidence. Not posted inline because line 1097 is outside the diff.

Performance

  • WINDOW_TURN (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3789) is one process-wide lock held for the whole read, including the five-minute wait. Any frame-thread caller of layer.addUrl with "bbox" (a replayed task, or app.run elsewhere in the app) now also waits behind other windows. The PR discloses this under "What still waits on the frame". Medium confidence. Posted inline.

Security

  • None found. Error text is redacted in read_cog_window and landed_failed, and the address is not logged.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs:27394: the existing doc comment for a_cog_window_comes_in_as_a_raster now sits above the new test a_cog_windows_read_is_apart_from_adding_it, so the older test has lost its doc. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Checked: no unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code; catch_unwind guards the thread; a wasm stub exists for add_cog_window; new UI strings use tl! or i18n::fmt; notices go through notify; and the error paths are covered by tests.

Already raised: none. prior-reviews.json has no threads.

…g are bounded (opengeos#1330)

Review round 1 of the first part. The lock moves to the app's threads, so a
`layer.addUrl` with "bbox" run on the frame waits only for its own read. At
most 16 windows wait to be read off the frame, and the next is refused before
its thread starts. The guide no longer says Command Search reaches a window:
it opens a dialog with no box. The UI test also runs with the header held and
times `ui.addUrl`, and the opengeos#1204 test gets its doc lines back.

Code review

Bugs

  • Frame path skips the GeoLibre internal-key refusal. window_asked is documented as refusing what the command refuses, but add_url_as_given refuses geolibreProject, geolibreLayer and geolibreZarr and the window path does not. A ui.addUrl with bbox plus one of those keys now adds a window and silently drops the project import. Confidence: high that the divergence exists, low that normal use reaches it, since the keys are internal. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3686, with a suggested fix.

Security

  • None found. Login-wrapped addresses are redacted in notices, errors and Reading … notes, and notify runs Session::redacted.

Performance

  • None found beyond what the PR already documents. The WINDOW_TURN serialisation, the 16-window cap and the five-minute limit are bounded, and the layer.addUrl replay path on the frame is the known trade-off.

Quality

  • Minor, left for the release quality pass: the MAX_WINDOW_READS doc says "waiting", but the count includes the window being read, so the effective limit is 16 in total.

AGENTS.md

  • Wasm: the cfg gating looks correct. The wasm add_cog_window stub still exists, and the new session fields, CogWindow, read_cog_window, WINDOW_TURN and the ui window path are all gated.
  • Never-silent and never-crash: no new unwrap/expect/panic. Notices and errors are present on both the success and failure paths. The window thread is wrapped in catch_unwind.
  • Translatable text: the new strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • Recording: ui.* steps are not recorded, so each window is recorded once, as the layer.addUrl it stands for.

Prior reviews

  • I left 2 open concerns alone because the author answered them and the answer is reasonable: landing a window on the active map, and the 64-download eviction producing a "closed project" message.
  • Several earlier threads are resolved or outdated and were not re-raised.
  • I checked that download ids are monotonic, so a stale window cannot match a new download.

…state too (opengeos#1330)

The command refuses it, and `window_asked` says it refuses what the command
does, so `ui.addUrl` with "bbox" and one of those keys added a window and
dropped the import. Both now share one check. The limit of 16 counts the
window being read, so it is called windows under way.

Code review

Static review of the proposed files and diff only. I did not build or run the tests.

Bugs: None confirmed. I traced the window path end to end: the frame-side window_asked, the thread, the WINDOW_TURN lock, the poll, download_landed_window, and add_download. The paths that matter for correctness hold up:

  • Errors from read_cog_window are redacted before they reach a notice.
  • A window whose project was closed gets the "downloaded after its project was closed" notice, not a silent drop.
  • A panic in the thread is caught, so the slot always fills.
  • Refusals happen on the frame before any thread starts.
  • Windows and GeoLibre state are rejected by one shared check.

Security: None found. Addresses are redacted in every notice and error, and window_checks runs before anything is fetched.

Performance: One item, which the PR already documents as a known limit. WINDOW_TURN serializes every window read process-wide, and the five-minute budget starts only when a read's turn comes. With 16 reads queued behind a slow server, the last one can wait a long time before it starts. The status is only "Reading {url}…" and never updates. Confidence that this matters in practice: medium. This is a trade-off, not a defect.

Quality: Low confidence (about 40%). record_step stores a "view" box as the literal string "view" (test a_window_read_off_the_frame_is_recorded_as_the_command_reading_it expects it). A replay will therefore read whatever the view is at replay time, not the box that landed. This may match how layer.addUrl with "view" is already recorded, so I did not post an inline comment. The author should confirm it is intended.

AGENTS.md: No violations found in the changed code.

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code.
  • Each path that adds, refuses or fails a window says so through notify, with a notice for lossy input (box cut, bands left out, palette lost).
  • User-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt.
  • The wasm32 gating looks consistent: the new Session field, download_landed_window, CogWindow, and the frame code are all gated.
  • The docs were updated for the new behaviour.

Previously raised concerns: I left 8 earlier threads alone. Each is resolved or was answered by the author. The frame-lock concern was fixed by moving the lock into the app. The GeoLibre-key bypass was fixed by no_geolibre_state. The 16-read cap was added. The map-switch landing and the 64-download forget limit are deferred to a shared download fix, which I agree with. The test-timing and docs points were addressed.

After a project closes, its queued workers can still read before a new project’s worker. Slow obsolete reads can delay the new window. If all 16 slots are occupied, new requests are refused until slots clear.

Check project ownership after acquiring WINDOW_TURN. Complete obsolete slots without reading so the app can clean them up and report the closed project.

Bound the memory held by completed window reads.

MAX_WINDOW_READS limits the number of slots, but each completed slot can retain both a maximum-size raster and its encoded GeoTIFF. A long synchronous frame operation can delay polling while other workers complete, so sixteen slots can retain at least 4.096 GB of raster values plus encoded bytes. Add an aggregate retained-memory budget for completed CogWindow results, including both RasterLayer::data and RasterLayer::embedded, and enforce it before further reads publish results.

… landed window is held at a time (opengeos#1330)

A window still waiting for its turn when its project is closed gives up its
place at once, with a notice, and asks nothing of the server. A read keeps its
turn until the frame has taken what it read, so a frame that stalls holds one
window's values, not those of every window asked for.

Code review

Bugs

  • A window still waiting for its turn is given up with "its project was closed before its read began" once 64 later downloads evict its id, even though the project wasn't closed. The wording is wrong in that case. (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4280, medium confidence)

Security

  • The new "Reading {url}…" notice uses s3_address::inner, which doesn't redact query tokens, so a plain address with ?token= appears in full. Suggest sources::redact. The existing "Downloading" line has the same pattern. (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4361, low-medium confidence)

Performance

  • No new issues found. The turn lock and the 20 ms polling of waiting threads are bounded (at most 16 threads).

Quality

  • Nit, left for the release quality pass: WindowRead is a five-tuple type alias, which would read better as a struct.

AGENTS.md

  • The UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, and the engine errors are redacted, as the rules require. No other violations found.

Already raised, left alone: I did not repost the earlier threads on the GeoLibre key check, the lock held by frame callers, the 16-read bound, the active-map landing, the 64-download limit as a general issue, the WASM test gate, the Command Search docs, or the header-timing test. They are all marked resolved or acknowledged. The 64-limit point above is raised only for its new wrong message. In total, 7 earlier concerns were left alone.

Checked: the engine/UI split of read_cog_window, window_asked, add_window and the landed_windows hand-off; the thread, turn and left logic (including project close and the strong-count exit); record/replay of window steps; the refusal order against the command path; the redaction of errors; and the wasm cfg gating. I did not build or run the tests (no shell access here).

…its read redacted (opengeos#1330)

A window waiting for its turn is also given up once 64 later downloads forget
its id, with its project still open, so the notice names both causes. The
"Reading" notice names the address redacted, as the errors do.

Code review

Bugs

  • Low confidence (~35%): layer.addDownload accepts a window object even when no landed window matches its id. The whole file is then added with no notice, and record_step records a layer.addUrl with that bbox. Suggest refusing the call in that case. Inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:4175.

Security

  • None found. Every new error and notice goes through redact or redact_text, including the Reading… line, the spawn error, the MAX refusal and the window_checks errors. The window object carries only bbox, cellSize and cog.

Performance

  • Minor: window_turn polls try_lock every 20 ms per waiting thread, and the frame requests a repaint every 100 ms while any window is pending. Both are reasonable at the 16-window cap. add_raster_after still runs on the frame, as the PR notes.

Quality

  • Medium confidence (~65%): the docs say "the next starts once the last has been added". The code releases the turn when the frame takes the result, before add_window runs. Inline on docs/user-guide/data-formats.md:155.
  • Nits for the release quality pass: no_geolibre_state is called twice on the add_url_as_given path; WindowRead is a five-tuple alias that would read better as a struct; window_turn could use a condvar rather than a 20 ms poll.

AGENTS.md

  • Medium-low confidence (~55%): the "refused, not dropped" rule is not met for service, coverage and bounds, because WINDOW_UNREAD omits them. Inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3707, with a suggested fix.
  • The t!/i18n::fmt wrapping, the Session::notify use, the wasm cfg gating and the absence of unwrap in non-test code all check out.

Prior threads: I left 9 earlier threads alone. All are resolved or were declined as known limits, and none is re-raised here. These are the WASM test cfg, the duplicated GeoLibre check, the download_under_way message, the frame-stall lock (two threads), the active-map and 64-download tracking, the uncached-header test, the Command Search docs and the redaction of the Reading notice.

Three inline comments were posted. One comment first targeted layer.rs:3666, which is outside the diff, and was re-anchored to 3707.

…ownload is added as a window (opengeos#1330)

A window drops `service`, `coverage` and `bounds` without a word, so they join
what it refuses. `layer.addDownload` with `window` and no window landed for its
id added the whole file and left a task recording a window, so it is refused.
The guide says the next read starts once the app has taken the last, which is
what the code does.

Quality nits, grouped (not blocking; no behaviour issue found here):

  • WindowRead is a five-field tuple, and window_reads is destructured by position in the retain closure and the take loop (|(id, url, p, slot, left)|, (*id, url.clone(), p.clone(), r)). A small struct with named fields (id, url, params, landed, project_closed) would read more clearly.
  • start_window_read holds a ~30-line thread body inline (turn, catch_unwind, result handoff, wait-for-take loop). Moving it to a helper such as spawn_window_read would make the frame-side method easier to follow.
  • window_turn polls try_lock every 20 ms across up to 16 threads. It works, but a Condvar would avoid the wake-ups; fine to leave as is.
  • In add_url_as_given, no_geolibre_state(p)? at the top duplicates the call inside window_checks. It is harmless; one of the two could go.

Per the repository guidance, these can wait for the release quality pass.

Left for the release quality pass, as you suggest, to keep this PR from growing. I kept this thread open so the pass finds it. One note: the second no_geolibre_state call stays, as window_asked reaches window_checks without going through add_url_as_given.

Code review

Bugs: None confirmed. I traced the risky paths and found them consistent:

  • Thread/turn handoff: the Arc strong-count and left flag release the turn once the frame takes the result, and a waiting read gives up when its project closes.
  • The record_step branch is not shadowed by an earlier branch.
  • The login binding happens on the frame (request_params) before the thread starts, so the thread never picks a login itself.
  • redact unwraps login and S3 wrappers, so the "Reading" notice does not leak keys.
  • The wasm stub for add_cog_window exists.
  • A failed layer.addDownload releases its landed window in Session::run (the existing "left to be added again" retention is by design).

Security: None found. The notices, errors and the Reading line all go through redact or redact_text.

Performance: Negligible. window_turn polls every 20 ms across at most 16 threads, and the frame repaints every 100 ms while a read is pending. Both are deliberate, and I left them alone.

Quality (posted as one grouped inline comment at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:195; per the repo's guidance these can wait for the release quality pass):

  • WindowRead is a five-field tuple that is destructured by position. A named struct would be clearer. (low, nit)
  • start_window_read has a ~30-line thread body inline. (low, nit)
  • window_turn busy-polls where a Condvar would do. (low, nit)
  • no_geolibre_state(p)? is called twice on the command path. (low, nit)

AGENTS.md: Compliant on what I checked. Panics are avoided in non-test code. User-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. Notices are given for the lossy and refused cases. The wasm build is covered by the stub. No new dependencies.

Prior threads: I left 11 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised and answered: the wasm test cfg, the GeoLibre keys, the eviction message, the window-without-landed refusal, the WINDOW_UNREAD keys, the frame lock, the uncached-header test, the Command Search docs, the notice redaction, the docs wording, and the bounded reads. Two of those are still open by design and noted in the PR's known limits: the landing-to-active-map behaviour and the 64-download eviction.
