feat(plugins): a plugin command's service.add reads off the frame on the desktop (#1319) - #1513
Closes#1319. Part 1 (#1426) made the window say that a plugin command had started, but it still froze during the read. With #1341's rerun in, a plugin command's service.add on the desktop now waits for nothing on the frame: the window answers while the service is read, and the command runs again and goes on with the layer.
With BrasilData 0.1.12 on the IBGE WFS, Solos (IBGE) over Teresina:
The command's first call
The window meanwhile
Before (Session::run, as the frame ran it)
4.3 s, waiting
not drawn
After
21 ms
160 frames in 4.7 s; 3 frames above 100 ms, the longest 528 ms
Those frames were counted in a headless egui_kittest harness with the app's logic and ui, not in a real window; see Testing.
Features and coverages go through layer.addUrl with "service": true or "coverage": true, the path Add From Service takes: read in pages off the frame, added as their own undo step, known by their address. In the next run the same service.add answers what adding them answered, with "area" when asked for over one, and moves the view to a box it was given.
Map layers (WMS, WMTS, styles, vector tiles) need only the documents, and are added by the run that has them.
Only a plugin's command run by the desktop app does this (leave_downloads inside a plugin call). rustgis-cli, Python, scripts and direct service.add calls wait and answer as before. In the web app a plugin's service.add still refuses to download.
Three things had to change for the window to answer during the wait:
The view is held for a run again. A command asking for "bbox": "view", or one working out its box from host.view, would otherwise ask for another area, and add a second layer, if the user moved the map while it waited. A run again now sees the view it first ran with, and the window's size then, whichever map is shown by then. The user's view comes back afterwards unless the command moved it itself.
A click on the waiting command does nothing. The window now takes that click, and it would have started the command over. pluginstart::ask drops it when the same command with the same parameters is waiting, and the status bar says Running BrasilData: Solos… during the wait, unless an error is the latest notice.
A failed answer is given once a run, in order. On main a rerun answers a failed download "as often as it asks", so a command retrying a flaky server found the same failure on every try. BrasilData does this for TerraBrasilis, where about 2 in 5 requests answered 502 when measured on 2026-10-30. Now the second ask in a run is a new download, and the next run gets the answers in the order they came. This also changes layer.addUrl's rerun, which shares the code.
What a plugin author has to know
This changes what service.add returns to a plugin on the desktop, so please say which approval it needs under docs/maintaining.md. #1319 proposed it as the better fix, and it follows layer.addUrl (#1170, #1202); nobody has replied on the issue yet.
A command that ignores pending still works if it fails harmlessly: the run is undone quietly and runs again. It only has to survive the call answering no layer.
A command that removes a layer before asking for it now gets an error. The run again removes the layer that just landed, then finds it gone: …the layer its download added was taken away (undone) before the command ran again. The layer stays, because the failed run is undone. Seen with BrasilData 0.1.12 with no area set, where it removes the old layer first. The fix is on the plugin's side, and the docs now say so: remove the old layer after the call, then rename the new one, which came in as Name (2) while the old name was in use. BrasilData has that fix ready locally and needs a release before a RustGIS with this change ships. Against real services (the IBGE WFS, and PAMGIA for the theme making its own request), replacing a layer with no area, with an area, and in a theme making its own request leaves one layer with the right name, and no error. That holds on RustGIS 0.5.0, and on this branch in a temporary headless test, not in a window and not in the web app. On this branch service.add's first call took 9 to 14 ms in those runs. The theme making its own request counts its features with host.fetch first, so its first call took 5.9 s, and that wait still holds the window.
Limits
service.layers, service.coverage, service.import, catalog.search, host.fetch and other commands that wait for a server still hold the window, and the docs now say so. BrasilData's retry path calls host.fetch, so a failed service can still hold the window for up to 20 s per fetch.
Parsing is still on the frame. Each run parses the documents again, and an added layer's answer is read on the frame as Add From Service's is. Those are the 3 frames in the table.
A document is capped at 64 MiB (MAX_DOCUMENT) and 60 s, against 512 MiB and 60 s before: it stays in memory until no command waits for it. A larger one is refused with an error. Up to 16 are read at a time, as for downloads, and asking for more fails. There is no limit on the total bytes a command keeps across its runs.
The first add on an empty map frames the data, not the layer's bounds from its capabilities: the landing frames it, and by then the map isn't empty.
Only the view is held for a run again. Layers, selection and maps are as they are then, as [Feature]: A plugin command that downloads a layer runs again when it lands, so it can go on with it (clip, rename, style) in the web app and, after #1170, on the desktop #1202 documents. So with another map shown by then, the command asks for the area it began with, and the layer lands in the map shown; a download already added to the first map says so and stops, as on main. The held camera is read in the projection of the moment: if the projection changed during the wait, or the other map has another one, it covers another area. An undo after the command may also restore the held view rather than the one the user moved to.
A command waiting can't be started again by clicking until it ends: up to 60 s per document, or 10 minutes for a download.
Notices: a failed features read says two things, as layer.addUrl on main does: the download's notice with the address, and the command's own error. The "whole layer is asked for" notice comes from the run that has the answer, because a run that waits is undone and its notices go with it. If the command then fails, that notice goes too.
#1512 (a COG window off the frame, #1330) is open and touches two of the same files: crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs and crates/engine/src/lib.rs. A trial merge of the two branches has no conflicts; I haven't built or run that merge.
Testing
New in pluginpanel (a fake fetcher that holds its answers, so the command demonstrably answers with the server silent):
The whole path: capabilities, features, layer added once with its source, area in the answer, and a text given by the command skipping the capabilities.
Lossy and clean: an area across the antimeridian says "whole layer" exactly once across its runs; an area the request carries says nothing.
Failures: capabilities or features answering 502 reach the command at once, with each notice said once.
View: moved and the window resized during the wait, or another map shown: one features request for the area it began with, and the user's view and size kept; a box given still moves the view to that box.
Map layers: WMS, and OGC API with two tileset documents. Tile sets not read: the standard address, said once; read: nothing said. A tile set naming no tiles of the layer is said too, but no test covers that notice.
Coverage: added, refused with the service's error, and an address ending in .tif downloaded whole, not probed.
New in plugin_fetch: a failed answer once a run and in order; documents landing, dropped when given up, and redacted; a document asked for twice in a call read once, the limit of 16, a refused run starting no read, and layer.addUrl refusing to mark a download as a document. New in service: the address a command waits for has no keys. New in pluginstart: a click on a waiting command is dropped, and another command runs. The seven pluginpanel tests of the first commit fail with the off-frame path switched off (leaves_waits returning false). With the review fixes switched off, the view, window size, other map, tile set notice, stale error and .tif assertions fail. The limit, the refused run, the redaction and the plugin_fetch and pluginstart tests of the first commit were not checked that way.
Run on Windows on main at b30aefd2, with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en and QGIS's GDAL:
cargo xtask ci passes on the last commit: fmt, clippy with -D warnings, cargo test --workspace and cargo xtask layers. That is 4,247 tests across 74 test targets, 20 ignored, none failed. (On this PC's Portuguese locale, 121 tests in 10 integration targets that look for English labels fail.)
cargo check --locked -p rustgis-web --target wasm32-unknown-unknown with RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings", before the last commit, which changes only tests. CI's cargo build of the first commit failed on an unused rerun_has; the second commit keeps it out of that build. Locally this is a check, not a build.
The tests share one fetcher for the whole process, and a test with no turn can start a download during another's turn. Loops of the UI tests showed that, and the last commit deals with it: hold_requests keeps only .example. addresses and answers the others at once, and the test of a click on a waiting command, which starts no download, has no fetcher. Before it, the STAC catalog test with pluginpanel::tests failed 9 of 30 runs on the request counts; after it, that loop passes 30 of 30. A test with no turn asking for an .example. address would still be held; none did in those runs. Six whole rustgis-ui-egui library runs in shuffled order also passed before the change, and three after it.
Two tests failed once each in earlier whole runs, on the commit before last, and didn't fail in cargo xtask ci. pmtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds, a timing failure already known on main ("still being read"), passed 3 of 3 alone. zooming_a_planet_with_raster_tiles_reuses_the_gpu_frame passed its target 3 of 3 alone; I don't know its cause, and I didn't check whether it also fails on main.
An earlier whole engine run, on the earlier base, failed twice: mbtiles_archives_frame_the_map_on_their_bounds, a flake already known on main, and an_oversized_ogc_items_binding_is_refused_before_native_fetch, which passed on the rerun. I didn't look further into that second one. Neither failed on b30aefd2.
Against the real IBGE WFS, with a temporary test not in this PR: BrasilData 0.1.12's Solos over Teresina gave 36 features clipped from 90, and a layer on the map. With no area set it gave the taken away error described above. That test ran just before the click guard was added, and it ran headless.
Not tested in a real window. Access to the app's window was asked for and denied, so no real click, pan or Windows "not responding" check has been made, for this part or for #1426. The frame counts come from the headless harness. To try it by hand: run a BrasilData theme on a large area, pan the map during the read, and click the same button again.
UI evidence
One visible change, new text only: while a plugin command waits off the frame, the status bar says Running BrasilData: Solos (IBGE)…. After, from a headless ui_shot run, not a real window: BrasilData 0.1.15's Solos over Teresina, right after the command started, reading IBGE's WFS. The layer landed later in the same run.
Desktop plugin service additions can load supported map layers asynchronously while the window remains usable. Requests can report pending status and resume as service documents become available.
Added asynchronous workflows for WFS, WMS, OGC API, and WCS layers, including feature areas and tileset discovery.
Up to 16 service documents can be read at a time. Identical requests are suppressed while waiting, and retries preserve the original view.
Documentation
Updated plugin guidance to describe asynchronous requests, reruns, limits, and failure handling.
…the desktop (opengeos#1319)
The documents a plugin command's service.add reads are fetched on a background
thread, under opengeos#1341's request numbers, and its features or coverage go through
layer.addUrl as Add From Service's do. The command runs again when each has come
and goes on with the layer, so the window answers meanwhile.
- A run again sees the view it first ran with, so a view moved during the wait
asks for no other area.
- A click on the command waiting doesn't start it over; the status bar says it
is running.
- A failed answer is given once a run, in order, so a command trying again gets
its next try.

Walkthrough
Desktop plugin service.add now reads required service documents off-frame and resumes commands as results arrive. Feature and coverage additions use the layer.addUrl download flow. The UI tracks waiting commands, and tests cover pending requests, retries, failures, and view changes.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Document reads and command retries crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin_fetch.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs
The session tracks off-frame document reads and rerun answers. It delivers failures once per run and preserves captured view state during retries. layer.addUrl obtains rerun answers through the session.
Service discovery and layer additions crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs
Service discovery reads missing documents through the session and returns pending responses. Feature and coverage additions delegate downloads through layer.addUrl; tileset discovery can read up to two documents.
Wait status and validation crates/ui-egui/src/pluginstart.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/pluginpanel.rs, docs/plugins.md
The UI tracks waiting commands and ignores duplicate requests with matching parameters. Tests cover asynchronous service additions, and documentation describes deferred execution.

Explanation
The title "feat(plugins): a plugin command's service.add reads off the frame on the desktop (#1319)" matches the main change: desktop plugin commands' service.add document and feature reads now run off the UI frame, with the command rerunning when results land. It follows the conventional-commit style and names the affected area. It is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. The title is long (90 characters), but it is still a single descriptive sentence.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1319] Objective 1, visible running state: pluginstart::running reports the waiting command. The status bar shows "Running BrasilData: Solos…" during the wait unless an error is the latest notice. A pluginstart test covers this. Objective 2, no restart from clicks: pluginstart::ask drops a request when the session already waits for the same command with equal parameters. A pluginstart test covers the drop and a different command still running. Objective 3, defer service.add to the frame loop and rerun the command: plugins.rs defers service-document requests until a rerun succeeds. plugin_fetch.rs reads documents off-frame and keeps features and coverages on the layer.addUrl download path. service.rs returns {pending: true, url} and answers on the rerun. pluginpanel tests use a fake fetcher that holds answers. They check that the command answers while the server is silent, that the layer is added once, and that area is returned. The busy cursor named in the issue is given as an example, not a requirement. The PR description reports headless frame timings only. No real-window check was made. That gap does not affect the coding requirements, which the headless tests cover. Non-coding items (approval under docs and the PR description's request for a maintainer approval) are not assessed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes in plugin_fetch.rs, plugins.rs, service.rs, lib.rs, pluginstart.rs, and pluginpanel.rs implement the deferred service.add flow, the view hold for reruns, the click guard, and the rerun support for it. Tests in those files cover the same behavior. The layer.addUrl change (failed answers delivered once per run, in order) uses the shared rerun code. The PR explains that a rerun would otherwise repeat the same failure on each try. This supports the deferred flow, so it is connected to #1319. The MAX_DOCUMENT limit of 64 MiB applies only to the new document path. Documentation in docs/plugins.md describes the new behavior. The web app and rustgis-cli paths keep their earlier behavior, as the PR states. The #1512 overlap is a merge note, not code in this PR, so it is not assessed here.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's Summary, Testing, UI evidence, and Related issue sections. Summary is thorough and states the change, the reasons, the measured effect, and the limits. Testing is detailed: it lists new tests per module, the commands run on Windows, the flaky tests, and the parts not tested in a real window. UI evidence is present with a before/after statement, but the screenshot is marked as 'to be attached', so the visual evidence is still missing. The template says to attach before and after images for UI changes. The Related issue section links #1319 in the Summary but leaves the template's 'Closes #' or 'Part of #' line unfilled in that section. The description is mostly complete, and the remaining gaps are small.

Scope: the 8 files in the diff. I checked the off-frame read path, the wait and land chain (retry_plugin → wait, poll_plugin_retries → documents_in), URL checks on the document reads, the frame loop's polling, and the coverage and features refactors against the code they replaced. No prior threads existed, so none were skipped as already raised.
Bugs
Held view lost when the active map changes during a wait (medium confidence, inline at plugin_fetch.rs:860). The view is held only if the same map is still active. A "view" box then comes from the new map, so the rerun asks for a different area and adds a second layer.
Security
None found. Documents go through download_within, which runs address::check and login redaction. The describe and tileset addresses are checked before they are read. Error text is redacted in documents_in.
Performance
None significant. Documents are shared as Arc, and the 64 MiB cap is per document. There is no cap on the total across waiting documents, which I judged acceptable at this scale.
Quality
Silent fallback on a failed tileset-list read (low–medium confidence, inline at service.rs:408). This is carried over from the blocking advertised_template, but the new code should still say what it did.
Nit, not posted inline: pluginstart::running (pluginstart.rs:117-118) says an error goes first. That only holds for retry-based waits. When the UI click queue is non-empty, its front entry wins regardless of error. The doc comment should match.
AGENTS.md
Never silent: the template fallback above.
Never crash: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. The panic! in run_out is test-only.
Wasm: leaves_waits is gated on cfg!(not(wasm32)). The new Arc/Mutex and web_time usage is wasm-safe.
Quality gates and the PR body's docs/maintaining.md approval note: that file is not in the diff. Worth confirming before merge.
Test coverage: the new pluginpanel tests cover the features, coverage, map-layer, failure and view cases. None covers a map switch during a wait (see the bug above) or a failed tileset-list read.

…lls it
The web app's build denies warnings, and the only caller is in service.add's
native path.

I read the full diff, the staged metadata, and the surrounding code. I checked the wasm gating of rerun_has, the anonymous-login scope for document reads, the features_answer notice path, the coverage describe URL, and the address check on the document read. Those checks found no new problems, so I dropped those candidates.
Bugs
Restore reads the wrong map (low confidence).poll_plugin_retries (plugin_fetch.rs:864-866) compares and restores the camera on self.map() after the command has run. If a command switches the active map during a rerun (navigate.rs, workspace.rs both do this), the held camera stays on the original map and the user's view is lost. This is narrow and I did not reproduce it.
Security
Unredacted addresses in answers (medium-low confidence, inline comment posted at service.rs:123). The pending answer and the "no document came" error at plugin_fetch.rs:667 carry raw document addresses. Those can hold keys, and the change's own fetching and downloading answers redact them.
Performance
Nothing new beyond the threads already open.
Quality (for the release quality pass)
pluginstart::running applies the "error goes first" rule only to the session's waiting command, not to the UI queue front, which contradicts its doc comment.
rerun_told: Vec<usize> couples to positions in rerun_landed. A per-entry flag would be harder to misuse.

No unwrap, expect, or panic in non-test code. The new unwrap_or_else on mutexes is fine.
Errors reach the user as command errors and notices. features_answer still runs on the off-frame features path (layer.rs:4117), so partial-data notices and axis fixes are kept.
The wasm build is safe: the rerun_has call at service.rs:727 sits inside the cfg(not(wasm32)) block that opens at line 706.
Already raised (left alone): 14 threads are already on this PR. I did not re-post any of them. The view-held and active-map case (plugin_fetch.rs:861), the admission and budget concerns for document reads, the COG-as-tile coverage concern, and the docs/plugins.md WCS area note all still apply and are covered by those threads.

…pengeos#1319)
- A run again holds the window's size with the view, and holds them whichever
map is shown, so it asks for the area it began with.
- A document asked for twice in a call is one read; up to 16 are read at a
time; a refused run starts no read.
- What a command waits for is named without its keys.
- Tile sets not read off the frame are said.
- A coverage is downloaded whole, not probed as a COG.
- An error from before a command waits doesn't hide that it is running.

Performance / memory (medium confidence). Follow-up to the open thread on this limit, with what is new: the cap counts only reading, and an entry leaves reading as soon as its document lands. A landed document (up to MAX_DOCUMENT, 64 MiB) is then kept in landed until its command runs again, and it is not counted. So one command can hold 16 × 64 MiB = 1 GiB of landed documents while it waits for the rest, and MAX_WAITING is 8, so the worst case across waiting commands is about 8 GiB. The aggregate byte budget the thread asks for is still missing. The fix is to count landed documents in the same check, or to add a byte total, and to change the error text to match.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right, and not changed here. The limit covers what is being read, and landed documents stay until the command runs again, so the worst case you work out holds on paper. It takes eight commands each reading sixteen 64 MiB documents, and no case like that has been measured; real capabilities here are around 12 MB. The PR text states that there is no byte total. I'd leave a budget to a change of its own unless a maintainer wants it here.

AGENTS.md, Never silent (low–medium confidence): the tile-list loop in left_template ends after two documents with Ok(None) and no notice. The layer then falls back to the standard tile address without telling the user, which the earlier thread on this area asked to avoid. checked_template(list, &t).ok() on line 418 is silent for the same reason: an invalid advertised template is dropped without a notice. The blocking advertised_template has the same gaps, so this is carried over. The new path should still say what it did.
Suggested change
Ok(None)
s.notify(format!("{}: its tile sets lead on past two documents, so the standard tile address is used",crate::sources::redact(list)),false);
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not changed here. The two gaps you name, a list running past two documents and an invalid advertised template, are the same in the blocking advertised_template, so this PR doesn't introduce them. The failed read and the list naming no tiles are said since the last round. It would make more sense to say all of them in both paths in one change, and a maintainer can ask for that here if they prefer.
A plugin's own layer.addUrl can set document: true and have its download silently dropped (medium confidence). request_url keeps every caller key except request, so is_document diverts the download to a service-document read. The command then gets Ok({}) with no layer and no notice. Anchored at plugins.rs:736; fix in request_url, where document should be removed or refused like the internal geolibre* keys.
Security
Nothing new. Document URLs pass address::check in discover before any read. Redaction is applied to the pending answer, the downloading list and the document errors. I did not find a credential leak.
Performance
Landed documents are not counted by the 16-read cap (medium confidence). This extends the open thread on that limit. reading drops an entry as soon as its document lands, but the landed document (up to 64 MiB) is kept until its command runs again. That allows 16 × 64 MiB per command, and MAX_WAITING = 8 gives about 8 GiB in the worst case. Anchored at plugin_fetch.rs:679. The aggregate byte budget the thread asks for is still missing.
Quality
Silent fallback when the tile-list loop runs out or a template is invalid (low–medium confidence). left_template returns Ok(None) after two documents with no notice, and checked_template(...).ok() drops an invalid advertised template silently. The blocking path has the same gaps, so this is carried over, but the new path should say what it did. Anchored at service.rs:426, with a suggestion block.
a_command_waiting_for_the_web_isnt_asked_again reaches the real network (medium confidence). It has no fetcher and no fetching::turn(), so it can race the global fake fetcher. Anchored at pluginstart.rs:219, with a suggestion block that holds the turn and installs a fetcher that never answers.
AGENTS.md
The silent fallback above is the only rule issue I found. The document key and the byte budget are covered by the Bugs and Performance items. Panicking constructs appear only in test code, and the wasm gating of rerun_has and its call site is correct.
Earlier concerns
15 review threads were already on this PR. I re-raised one (the byte budget, with the new landed-document detail) and left 14 alone. Several of those are addressed in the current code: the redaction, the admission check before reads, the notices on failed tile lists, the view and the box.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR, merge base b30aefd to head 3d45bf4.
…ent (opengeos#1319)
A download so marked was read for service.add, and no layer came, with nothing
said. It is refused now. A test of a waiting command no longer uses the network.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Overall the change is careful and the prior threads are largely addressed in code. I found no blocking bugs. The items below are new or still open.
Bugs
Compatibility (medium confidence): A plugin command that removes its old layer before calling service.add now gets a "taken away (undone)" error on the desktop, because the rerun sees its new layer gone. The PR acknowledges this (BrasilData 0.1.12 needs a release first). Nothing gates it by plugin API version, so existing installed plugins break on upgrade. Worth an explicit maintainer decision before merge.
Security
Low confidence, not a regression:discover in crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs:180 builds its error as format!("{original}: {e}") with the plugin-supplied, unredacted address. This mirrors fetch_capabilities on main. The new waiting_for path redacts, so the two are now inconsistent.
Performance
Medium confidence, low impact:documents_in converts each landed Vec<u8> with bytes.into(), which copies up to 64 MiB into a new Arc<[u8]>. Peak memory per landing is about twice the document size.
Already raised and still open in the code (not repeated): landed documents are not counted in the 16-read cap (plugin_fetch.rs:679).
Quality
Nit: The MAX_EXPIRED refusal in plugins.rs:735 says "downloads … still under way", which now also covers document reads.
Already acknowledged by the author (not repeated): the notice for a tile set naming no tiles (service.rs, left_template) has no test.
AGENTS.md
Medium-high confidence: The visible UI behaviour changes: service.add waits now show "Running …" in the status bar and drop repeated clicks. AGENTS.md requires before/after or after-only screenshots for visible changes. The PR body has none and states the window was not tested. A headless ui_shot capture of the waiting state would satisfy this.
Low confidence: The PR body asks for a note in docs/maintaining.md about the approval a plugin needs. The diff only touches docs/plugins.md.
Prior review threads (19 reviewed)
Fixed in code, verified: the document bypass is now refused in layer.rs:3084 (test a_download_cannot_be_marked_as_a_document); the saved-login redaction in waiting_for; the view and window size are held across reruns; the test is hermetic; the admission check runs before reads; .tif coverages are fetched whole.
Still open and left alone, not new: the landed-document memory budget (plugin_fetch.rs:679) and the silent tile-list fallback after two documents (service.rs:426).

The test of a command waiting for the web starts no download, so it needs
neither a fetcher nor a turn. The fetcher it had dropped the `done` of any
download another test started meanwhile, which left the in-flight count up
for the rest of the process.
`hold_requests` kept every download too, so one started by a test with no
turn added to the request counts of the tests using it. It now keeps only
its tests' `.example.` addresses and answers the others at once.

Bug (medium confidence): the 16-read cap is treated as a failed tile-set read.left_document returns Some(Err("16 documents are already being read…")) when the cap is hit (plugin_fetch.rs, the reading >= crate::MAX_URL_REQUESTS check). This Err(e) arm turns that refusal into "its tile sets couldn't be read, so the standard tile address is used" and adds the layer on the standard address without waiting. The capabilities path refuses the same error, since discover propagates it and service.add fails, so the two paths disagree.
Scenario: one plugin run calls service.add for 17 OGC API layers that each have a tile list, ignoring pending. Layers 1–16 queue their reads. Layer 17 gets the cap error, and its layer lands on the standard tile address with only an informational notice.
Suggested direction: keep the cap refusal as an error for the command. For example, have left_template return the left_document error as Err-that-fails rather than falling back, or check the cap before calling it. The fallback should stay only for a document that was actually read and failed or named no tiles.
A test would be: 17 tile-list layers in one run, expecting the command to fail on the 17th rather than add it on the standard address.
The 16-read cap for service documents is reported to left_template as an ordinary read failure. A tile list then falls back to the standard tile address instead of failing the command, while capabilities fail correctly on the same cap. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs:412. Confidence: medium.
Security
None found. The off-frame document reads go through the same address::check as the blocking path, and error text is redacted before it reaches the command.
Performance
Landed documents are copied from Vec<u8> into Arc<[u8]> (plugin_fetch.rs, documents_in), which duplicates up to 64 MiB per document. Confidence: low. Grouped nit.
Quality
UrlWaits::land records a document in added, the bounded list of downloads already added, though nothing is added. After 1024 documents, real download records can be evicted. Confidence: low. Grouped nit.
AGENTS.md
The status bar now shows "Running …" and drops clicks for the whole off-frame wait, a visible change. The PR has no before/after screenshots, and AGENTS.md asks for them for any visible change. Confidence: medium.
Already raised, left alone: 20 threads are on this PR. Four remain open with the author's answer and no code change: the landed-document memory budget, the silent tile-list fallback after two documents, the projection change during a wait, and the undo snapshot. I left all four alone, plus 16 resolved or outdated threads that the current code addresses.

Summary
Closes #1319. Part 1 (#1426) made the window say that a plugin command had started, but it still froze during the read. With #1341's rerun in, a plugin command's
service.addon the desktop now waits for nothing on the frame: the window answers while the service is read, and the command runs again and goes on with the layer. With BrasilData 0.1.12 on the IBGE WFS, Solos (IBGE) over Teresina:
Session::run, as the frame ran it)Those frames were counted in a headless
egui_kittestharness with the app'slogicandui, not in a real window; see Testing.Session::left_document): the capabilities, an OGC API layer's further documents and tilesets, and a coverage's description are read on a background thread, each with a request number from feat(plugins): a plugin command whoselayer.addUrlleft a download runs again when it lands, and goes on with the layer (#1202) #1341. The command answers{"pending": true, "url": …}and runs again when they are in. Waiting, replacing, dropping and giving up are the oneslayer.addUrl's downloads already have.layer.addUrlwith"service": trueor"coverage": true, the path Add From Service takes: read in pages off the frame, added as their own undo step, known by their address. In the next run the sameservice.addanswers what adding them answered, with"area"when asked for over one, and moves the view to a box it was given.leave_downloadsinside a plugin call).rustgis-cli, Python, scripts and directservice.addcalls wait and answer as before. In the web app a plugin'sservice.addstill refuses to download.Three things had to change for the window to answer during the wait:
"bbox": "view", or one working out its box fromhost.view, would otherwise ask for another area, and add a second layer, if the user moved the map while it waited. A run again now sees the view it first ran with, and the window's size then, whichever map is shown by then. The user's view comes back afterwards unless the command moved it itself.pluginstart::askdrops it when the same command with the same parameters is waiting, and the status bar saysRunning BrasilData: Solos…during the wait, unless an error is the latest notice.maina rerun answers a failed download "as often as it asks", so a command retrying a flaky server found the same failure on every try. BrasilData does this for TerraBrasilis, where about 2 in 5 requests answered 502 when measured on 2026-10-30. Now the second ask in a run is a new download, and the next run gets the answers in the order they came. This also changeslayer.addUrl's rerun, which shares the code. What a plugin author has to know
This changes what
service.addreturns to a plugin on the desktop, so please say which approval it needs underdocs/maintaining.md. #1319 proposed it as the better fix, and it followslayer.addUrl(#1170, #1202); nobody has replied on the issue yet.pendingstill works if it fails harmlessly: the run is undone quietly and runs again. It only has to survive the call answering nolayer.…the layer its download added was taken away (undone) before the command ran again. The layer stays, because the failed run is undone. Seen with BrasilData 0.1.12 with no area set, where it removes the old layer first. The fix is on the plugin's side, and the docs now say so: remove the old layer after the call, then rename the new one, which came in asName (2)while the old name was in use. On this branchservice.add's first call took 9 to 14 ms in those runs. The theme making its own request counts its features withhost.fetchfirst, so its first call took 5.9 s, and that wait still holds the window.Limits
service.layers,service.coverage,service.import,catalog.search,host.fetchand other commands that wait for a server still hold the window, and the docs now say so. BrasilData's retry path callshost.fetch, so a failed service can still hold the window for up to 20 s per fetch.MAX_DOCUMENT) and 60 s, against 512 MiB and 60 s before: it stays in memory until no command waits for it. A larger one is refused with an error. Up to 16 are read at a time, as for downloads, and asking for more fails. There is no limit on the total bytes a command keeps across its runs.layer.addUrlleft a download runs again when it lands, and goes on with the layer (#1202) #1341, not the 60 s a waiting call had. A timeout keeps the hint about asking for an area.main. The held camera is read in the projection of the moment: if the projection changed during the wait, or the other map has another one, it covers another area. An undo after the command may also restore the held view rather than the one the user moved to.layer.addUrlonmaindoes: the download's notice with the address, and the command's own error. The "whole layer is asked for" notice comes from the run that has the answer, because a run that waits is undone and its notices go with it. If the command then fails, that notice goes too.Overlap with #1512
#1512 (a COG window off the frame, #1330) is open and touches two of the same files:
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rsandcrates/engine/src/lib.rs. A trial merge of the two branches has no conflicts; I haven't built or run that merge.Testing

CI'scargo buildof the first commit failed on an unusedrerun_has; the second commit keeps it out of that build. Locally this is a check, not a build. The tests share one fetcher for the whole process, and a test with no turn can start a download during another's turn. Loops of the UI tests showed that, and the last commit deals with it:
hold_requestskeeps only.example.addresses and answers the others at once, and the test of a click on a waiting command, which starts no download, has no fetcher. Before it, the STAC catalog test withpluginpanel::testsfailed 9 of 30 runs on the request counts; after it, that loop passes 30 of 30. A test with no turn asking for an.example.address would still be held; none did in those runs. I didn't look further into that second one. Neither failed onb30aefd2.Against the real IBGE WFS, with a temporary test not in this PR: BrasilData 0.1.12's Solos over Teresina gave 36 features clipped from 90, and a layer on the map. With no area set it gave the

Access to the app's window was asked for and denied, so no real click, pan or Windows "not responding" check has been made, for this part or for #1426. The frame counts come from the headless harness. To try it by hand: run a BrasilData theme on a large area, pan the map during the read, and click the same button again.

One visible change, new text only: while a plugin command waits off the frame, the status bar says
