What this PR does / why we need it:

This PR now also includes CNTRLPLANE-3926 (in-cluster mirror registry fixture, previously #9996). Per review, the fixture lands together with the test that exercises it (Slack thread), so #9996 is closed in favour of this PR.

Adds e2e v2 coverage for CNTRLPLANE-3927 (epic OCPSTRAT-3316, parent CNTRLPLANE-3922): a HostedCluster's spec.imageContentSources must reach two outputs produced by independent controllers:

  1. HCCO path: the hosted cluster's cluster-scoped ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster, labelled machineconfiguration.openshift.io/role: worker.
  2. CPO path: ConfigMap/<HCP namespace>/ignition-config-40-image-content-source, labelled hypershift.openshift.io/core-ignition-config: "true". Its data.config holds the IDMS serialized as YAML, which feeds node ignition.

It has three parts:

  1. Mirror registry fixture (test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry/, CNTRLPLANE-3926). It is shared infrastructure for the OCPSTRAT-3316 tests (3922/3923/3924). Setup does the following:

    1. deploys registry (TLS, PVC) in an owned namespace;
    2. copies images through the internal Service with an in-cluster oc Job, preserving digests;
    3. switches the registry to read-only;
    4. only after that, exposes it through a passthrough Route.

    It returns the CA bundle, the mirrored refs, and []hyperv1.ImageContentSource. The design is described below (D1–D9).

  2. Lifecycle variant (test/e2e/v2/lifecycle/):

    • AWSPlatformConfig.PreCreate always runs the fixture, like the external OIDC Keycloak setup. It reads the copier image from the management cluster's openshift/cli ImageStream and writes mirror-registry-ca.pem, mirror-registry-ics.yaml and mirror-registry.json to SHARED_DIR. The whole setup has a 20-minute timeout. An empty ImageContentSources result fails setup before any artifact is written, rather than creating an unconfigured HC whose tests would skip.
    • A static image-mirroring cluster spec (1 NodePool replica, like autoscaling/external-oidc) passes those files to --additional-trust-bundle / --image-content-sources. Creating the HC with this configuration from the start avoids a NodePool rollout.
    • The default AWS TestMatrix gains a parallel group {Name: image-mirroring, Variant: image-mirroring, LabelFilter: image-mirroring}. Following the "Adding a New ClusterSpec" convention, the variant is fixed at compile time: no env var, no runtime gating.
  3. Test (test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go): registers [sig-hypershift][Jira:Hypershift][Feature:ImageMirroring] Hosted Cluster Image Mirroring (labels lifecycle, image-mirroring, Informing) through RegisterHostedClusterImageMirroringTests, with two independent Its:

    • should propagate imageContentSources to the hosted cluster IDMS with the worker role: opens a port-forwarded hosted-cluster client and polls the exact ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster.
    • should propagate imageContentSources independently to the control plane ignition ConfigMap: uses only the management client. It polls the exact ConfigMap in tc.ControlPlaneNamespace and decodes data.config into a typed config.openshift.io/v1 ImageDigestMirrorSet.

How the assertions avoid passing for the wrong reason:

  • Self-contained capability check. Each It first reads the HC and the fixture Route. If the HC has no imageContentSources or the Route does not exist, it calls Skip("image mirroring is not configured on this hosted cluster"). Any other read error fails the test. The decision is a pure helper (imageMirroringConfigured) with table tests.
  • Strict once configured. After the gate, blank or duplicate sources, sources with no mirrors, or a missing fixture source still fail. Both fixture sources must be present, and each must have a mirror whose host exactly equals the fixture Route host.
  • The HostedCluster spec is the only oracle. Each It compares its output with its own snapshot of the HC's imageContentSources, never with the other output. Expected values are never computed with the producers (globalconfig.ReconcileImageDigestMirrors, the ignition serializer) or with the fixture's result builder. A bug shared by both producers therefore cannot hide.
  • Exact comparison. Source entries may come in any order, but each source keeps its mirror order (priority) and multiplicity. Missing, extra, duplicate or swapped entries fail. Only the required labels are checked.
  • Exact objects. The test uses named GETs (no LIST with a label selector) and checks collection cardinality. Getters never return a synthetic object on error.
  • Polling and diagnostics. Both waits use Gomega Eventually(func(g Gomega, ctx context.Context) {…}) (10m/3s, fresh GETs), reusing the named GETs and pure check helpers. GET errors and mismatches keep polling; check errors stop immediately through StopTrying. Mismatches report expected and actual values.
  • Informing until proven stable. Both specs carry internal.InformingLabel. Their Gomega assertions, including polling timeouts, go through InformingAwareFailHandler, so assertion failures are reported as informing rather than failing the job. The test no longer imports the v1 test/e2e/util package; the WithoutConditionDump allowlist entry added earlier in this PR has been removed.

Commits:

  • Fixture (CNTRLPLANE-3926):
    • API skeleton and option validation;
    • TLS materials and resource builders;
    • Job-based copier;
    • setup/teardown orchestration and persisted CA;
    • adds the package to the other shard of the GitHub Actions unit-test workflow, which does not otherwise cover test/e2e/v2/.
  • test(e2e): add AWS image-mirroring lifecycle variant.
  • test(e2e): verify image mirroring propagation through independent paths.
  • Review fixes (separate commits; the branch was rebased on main to pick up the new ClusterSpecs(ctx, …) signature):
    • 5622bedf22: mark both specs informing and use Gomega polling;
    • 02c65fae2e: drop WithoutConditionDump from the v1 utility allowlist;
    • a702d31baa: fail lifecycle setup on empty image content sources;
    • 2773f8a758: make the fixture poll interval injectable per instance for faster unit tests;
    • d1b859abfd: fix the Gomega polling callback argument order (Gomega first, then context.Context).
    • 857e4687e7: validate the mirror request before withdrawing the Route of a working mirror (raised by CodeRabbit on CNTRLPLANE-3937: e2e: verify mirror cleanup when imageContentSources is removed #10079).

Design decisions (mirror registry fixture)

D1 — Location and shape

  • Package test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry/: no build tag and no Ginkgo/Gomega imports.
    • Its unit tests therefore run in the standard make test (go test ./..., Prow unit).
    • The package is callable from Ginkgo tests, from lifecycle hooks and from any future CI step.
    • It is added to the other shard of the GitHub Actions unit-test workflow, which otherwise does not cover test/e2e/v2/.
  • Not placed in support/imageresolution/ (enhancement CNTRLPLANE-3314: Unified image resolution for HyperShift enhancements#1981), which is for production image resolution.
  • The fixture does not import the production resolvers/providers (support/releaseinfo, support/imageregistry, support/globalconfig):
    • the OCPSTRAT-3877 refactor can change them without touching the fixture;
    • the tests never compute their expectations with the code under test.
  • The fixture only provisions and reports. It never asserts fallback policy (OCPBUGS-128661), which belongs in the consuming tests.
  • Resources are reconciled with support/upsert, the repository's create-or-update pattern.

D2 — Exposure: Route with TLS passthrough, explicit host

  • registry serves TLS itself on port 5000, and a passthrough Route exposes it.
  • The Route host is set explicitly to <name>-<namespace>.<ingress domain>, with the ingress domain read from ingresses.config.openshift.io/cluster. The hostname is therefore known before any resource exists, so the serving certificate (and, in the future, a CA distributed earlier in the pipeline) can be prepared in advance.
  • Why not reuse the ingress certificate:
    • in CI the management cluster is a nested hosted cluster whose ingress certificate is signed by an internal root-ca, so it gives no trust advantage;
    • hosted-cluster nodes cannot reach the in-cluster Service anyway.

Network assumptions and boundaries

  • Hosted-cluster endpoint access does not matter.
    • --endpoint-access (Public / PublicAndPrivate / Private) only changes how control-plane endpoints are exposed.
    • Nodes pull from the mirror through the worker VPC's outbound path. hypershift create infra aws builds it identically in all three modes (private subnets + NAT).
    • The manual validation used exactly that path.
  • Workers need outbound access to the management-cluster ingress (NAT, internet gateway or cluster proxy). With a proxy, the mirror host must not be in noProxy. A fully disconnected VPC cannot reach the Route.
  • The management-cluster ingress must be external. With an internal ingress (e.g. a Private management cluster with an NLB), hosted-cluster VPCs cannot reach it. Setup fails early in that case: it probes the public endpoint from the test process, which runs outside the management cluster.
  • OpenShift management cluster only.
    • The fixture uses a Route and ingresses.config.openshift.io. It relies on the restricted-v2 SCC to assign a non-root UID, because the registry image has no USER.
    • The caller supplies the copier image; the lifecycle reads it from the openshift/cli ImageStream.
    • This covers every current consumer, including the v2 Azure self-managed suite.
    • AKS-based management clusters are not supported. Support is additive and does not change the public API: optional LoadBalancer exposure (keeping D4), IP SANs, and an explicit pod runAsUser/fsGroup off OpenShift.

D3 — TLS: helper CA by default, caller-supplied CA supported

  • Default: the helper generates a CA and signs a serving certificate. Its SANs are the Route host, the Service DNS names, and optional extra names.
  • CA persistence: the CA (cert + key) is stored in the Secret <name>-ca in the fixture namespace and reused by later Setup calls. Trust that was already distributed survives re-runs.
  • Caller-supplied CA: a caller can pass an existing CA (cert + key). This is the hook for CNTRLPLANE-3923/3924, where the management cluster's own nodes must trust the mirror, so the CA must be generated earlier in the CI pipeline.
  • Consumers pass the CA bundle to HostedCluster.spec.additionalTrustBundle. No --insecure-registry anywhere.

D4 — No authentication; push only internally; read-only before exposure

  • Why no authentication:
    • registry htpasswd auth is all-or-nothing, with no anonymous read plus authenticated write;
    • credentials would also have to be merged into the hosted cluster pull secret and, for 3923/3924, into the management cluster pull secret.
  • Order of operations:
    1. images are copied through the internal Service while the registry is writable;
    2. the registry restarts with storage.maintenance.readonly.enabled=true;
    3. only then is the Route created.
  • Invariant: the Route exists only while the registry is read-only. A repeated Setup first deletes the Route and waits until public routing is withdrawn before re-enabling writes.
  • Residual risk: mirrored content is anonymously readable for the lifetime of the job, at an unguessable per-job hostname. htpasswd can be added later as a new optional field without breaking the API.

D5 — Copy: in-cluster Job running oc

  • Copying runs as a Kubernetes Job in the registry namespace, with a caller-supplied image that contains oc.
    • It reaches the registry through the internal Service and trusts the fixture CA.
    • It reads sources with an optional caller-supplied pull secret.
  • This avoids depending on oc/skopeo in the hypershift-tests image and keeps traffic in-cluster. The copier sits behind an ImageCopier interface so unit tests can use a fake.
  • Digests are preserved: manifest lists are kept and there is no --filter-by-os. IDMS only redirects by-digest pulls.
  • Single images use oc image mirror. Full release payloads use oc adm release mirror (CNTRLPLANE-3931).

D6 — Mirror layout and image-content-source mapping

  • The mirror repository for <reg>/<path> is <host>/<reg>/<path>. Keeping the source registry host in the path avoids collisions between registries.
  • The fixture returns []hyperv1.ImageContentSource, one entry per source repository.
  • Virtual source repositories: a mapping can declare a source that does not exist upstream (e.g. mirror-source.hypershift-e2e.invalid/...).
    • A pod referencing <virtual repo>@<digest> can only start if the node pulled from the mirror.
    • This gives endpoint-specific evidence for CNTRLPLANE-3928.

D7 — Storage

  • Storage is always a PersistentVolumeClaim (default 20Gi, default StorageClass), and the Deployment uses the Recreate strategy.
  • There is no emptyDir option: the read-only switch (D4) restarts the pod, and an emptyDir would lose the copied content.
  • The registry configuration is a mounted config.yml. A config hash annotation rolls the pod when read-only is toggled.

D8 — Registry image

  • Configurable. The default is quay.io/libpod/registry:2.8.2, pinned by manifest-list digest. It is not hosted on Docker Hub, which avoids rate limits.
  • Verified under the restricted-v2 SCC (random UID) on a nested management cluster.

D9 — CI integration

  • The fixture runs from AWSPlatformConfig.PreCreate, before any hosted cluster exists. The image-mirroring HC is created with the trust bundle and the image content sources, so no NodePool rollout is needed. A day-2 change would cost a full Replace rollout (and another to roll back), which is more expensive than a 1-node variant.
  • Temporary placement: the variant sits in the default AWS TestPlan until cluster specs are externalized and dynamic test plans are available (CNTRLPLANE-3999), as agreed in the Slack thread.
  • Teardown: in CI the nested management cluster is destroyed with the job. Teardown (delete the owned namespace) exists for local runs and is idempotent.

Out of scope (tracked elsewhere)

  • Making management-cluster nodes trust the mirror (CNTRLPLANE-3923/3924). It needs its own job; this PR only provides the caller-supplied-CA hook.
  • --registry-overrides HO installation wiring (3930/3931).
  • Workload pulls (CNTRLPLANE-3928).
  • Node consumption of the ignition payload, mirrorSourcePolicy, and removal or update of sources.

Fixes CNTRLPLANE-3927
Fixes CNTRLPLANE-3926

Special notes for your reviewer:

  • Runs in e2e-v2-aws. The default AWS plan now creates one extra 1-node HostedCluster (image-mirroring). PreCreate also runs the fixture setup, which took ~45 s in manual runs and has a 20-minute timeout. The two specs are read-only. The impact on the job's wall-clock time has not been measured yet; the e2e-v2-aws run on this PR is the first data point.

  • Verification reports:

    Both reports were written for the earlier wiring.

  • Live runs (before the final wiring):

    • Lifecycle: a manual run of the real lifecycle binaries on a nested 4.20 management cluster (create-guests → run-tests → destroy-guests). It used the earlier opt-in wiring (HYPERSHIFT_E2E_IMAGE_MIRRORING=true, one-group plan). Result: Ran 2 of 1149 Specs, 2 passed, twice, with nothing left behind. The final wiring only removes the env var, adds the matrix group and sets 1 replica. The e2e-v2-aws run on this PR exercises it end to end.
    • Fixture:
      • Setup took ~45 s, and anonymous /v2/ returned 200 with the CA.
      • Digests were preserved for both a real and a virtual source repository, and a push through the Route was rejected with 405.
      • Re-running Setup was idempotent, and Teardown could be run twice.
      • A watcher never saw the Route exist while the registry was writable.
    • Hosted-node reachability was checked on a dedicated AWS HostedCluster (OCP 4.20.0):
      • a pod referencing mirror-source.hypershift-e2e.invalid/libpod/registry@sha256:… pulled from the mirror and ran;
      • the negative control (the same repository by tag) failed with no such host.
  • Unit tests:

    • The fixture tests run in make test. Poll intervals default to 5s at runtime and are set to 1ms per instance in polling tests, without mutable package-level state. Package test time fell from 25.1s to 6.7s locally (go test -count=1 -v). The full fixture suite and 10 repetitions of the polling tests pass with -race.
    • The lifecycle and test-helper tests carry the e2ev2 build tag. Run them with:
      GO111MODULE=on GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=vendor go test -tags e2ev2 -race -count=1 ./test/e2e/v2/lifecycle/ ./test/e2e/v2/tests -run 'WriteMirrorRegistryResult|ImageMirroring|ClusterSpecs|PlatformConfig|TestMatrix'
    • The Unit Tests (other) GitHub Actions job takes the new shard entry only after merge, because test.yaml calls test-reusable.yaml@main.
  • Local review-fix validation (after the rebase on main): the command above, fixture tests, linter analyzer tests, gofmt and gitlint pass; go vet -tags e2ev2 ./test/e2e/v2/... passes on every commit of the PR; golangci-lint with the repository config (including hypershiftlinter) reports 0 issues on ./test/e2e/v2/.... The Gomega callback signature was also checked at runtime against the vendored Gomega. No new live run was performed for the review-fix commits.

  • Known follow-up: hypershift destroy leaves the CLI-created user-ca-bundle ConfigMap in the HostedCluster namespace.

Details

In response to this:

What this PR does / why we need it:

Depends on #9996 (CNTRLPLANE-3926, in-cluster mirror registry fixture). This branch is stacked on its head 8d54f7ab32, so until #9996 merges the diff also shows its 10 commits. Only the last commit, c9ad656db6, belongs to this PR (6 files, +703 lines, test code only). I will rebase once #9996 merges.

Adds the e2e v2 lifecycle test for CNTRLPLANE-3927 (epic OCPSTRAT-3316, parent CNTRLPLANE-3922). It validates that a HostedCluster's spec.imageContentSources reach two outputs produced by independent controllers:

  1. HCCO path: the hosted cluster's cluster-scoped ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster, labelled machineconfiguration.openshift.io/role: worker.
  2. CPO path: ConfigMap/<HCP namespace>/ignition-config-40-image-content-source, labelled hypershift.openshift.io/core-ignition-config: "true". Its data.config holds the IDMS serialized as YAML, which feeds node ignition.

The HostedCluster is created by create-guests with the opt-in image-mirroring variant from #9996, whose fixture supplies the CA and two image content sources.

test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go registers [sig-hypershift][Jira:Hypershift][Feature:ImageMirroring] Hosted Cluster Image Mirroring (labels lifecycle, image-mirroring) through RegisterHostedClusterImageMirroringTests, with two independent Its:

  • should propagate imageContentSources to the hosted cluster IDMS with the worker role: opens a port-forwarded hosted-cluster client and polls the exact ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster.
  • should propagate imageContentSources independently to the control plane ignition ConfigMap: uses only the management client. It polls the exact ConfigMap in tc.ControlPlaneNamespace and decodes data.config into a typed config.openshift.io/v1 ImageDigestMirrorSet.

How the assertions avoid passing for the wrong reason:

  • The HostedCluster spec is the only oracle. Each It compares its output with its own snapshot of the HC's imageContentSources, never with the other output. Expected values are never computed with the producers (globalconfig.ReconcileImageDigestMirrors, the ignition serializer) or the fixture's result builder. A bug shared by both producers therefore cannot hide.
  • Non-empty, fixture-backed input. Missing or empty imageContentSources, blank or duplicate sources, or no mirrors make the test fail rather than skip in this dedicated lane. Both fixture sources must be present, and each must have a mirror whose host exactly equals the fixture Route host.
  • Exact comparison. Source entries may come in any order, but each source keeps its mirror order (priority) and multiplicity. Missing, extra, duplicate or swapped entries fail. Only the required labels are checked.
  • Exact objects. Named GETs, not LIST plus a label selector; collection cardinality checks; getters never return a synthetic object on error.
  • Polling and diagnostics. Both waits use e2eutil.EventuallyObjects (10m/3s, fresh GETs). Mismatches return a reason with expected and actual values and can converge. Setup errors fail before polling.

Also adds WithoutConditionDump to the e2eutilallowlist analyzer (one symbol, with analyzer test data). Neither IDMS nor ConfigMap has conditions the default dump can extract.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

Fixes CNTRLPLANE-3927

Special notes for your reviewer:

  • Verification report: CNTRLPLANE-3927: Add test plan and verification report hypershift-community/test-results-verification#8 (rendered). It contains an IEEE 829 test plan and the evidence, plus a sanitized reproduction kit (runbook, PASS/FAIL check script, VERIFY.md checklist).
  • Live run: a manual run of the real lifecycle binaries built from c9ad656db6 on a nested 4.20 management cluster: create-guests → run-tests → destroy-guests with HYPERSHIFT_E2E_IMAGE_MIRRORING=true and a one-group test plan (variant: image-mirroring, labelFilter: "lifecycle && image-mirroring").
  • Result: Ran 2 of 1149 Specs, 2 passed, twice. The JUnit file has both testcases passed, none skipped, DryRun=false.
  • Independent checks: oc/jq checks confirmed the hosted IDMS and the decoded ConfigMap payload, each against the HC spec.
  • Reviews: an independent code review found no defects, and a read-only review checked the live evidence (PASS with notes).
  • Cleanup: nothing was left on the cluster or in AWS.
  • This was also the first end-to-end run of the CNTRLPLANE-3926: add in-cluster mirror registry fixture for e2e v2 #9996 create-guests wiring.
  • Opt-in, not run by existing jobs. No current job selects the image-mirroring variant or label, so CI here compiles and lints the specs but does not run them live. The dedicated lane comes with CNTRLPLANE-3929.
  • Unit tests. The helper tests (6 tests, 76 subcases, including adversarial negatives) carry the e2ev2 build tag, and no existing make target runs them. Run them with:
    GO111MODULE=on GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=vendor go test -tags e2ev2 -race -count=1 -run '^TestImageMirroring' ./test/e2e/v2/tests
  • Producers exercised. The live run exercised the CPO/HCCO of the 4.20.0 release payload. The change is test-only.
  • Out of scope: workload pulls (CNTRLPLANE-3928), node consumption of the ignition payload, mirrorSourcePolicy, removal or update of sources, CI job configuration.
  • make pre-commit:
  • all, verify and verify-git-clean pass (0 lint issues, no regenerated files).
  • In test, only cmd/cluster/{agent,kubevirt} TestNewDestroyCommand failed locally. Those tests are untouched here; they pick up ~/.kube/config and make a real API call. With KUBECONFIG=/dev/null, make test passes.

  • Subject and description added to both, commit and PR.

Walkthrough

The change adds a disposable mirror-registry fixture for e2e image-mirroring tests. It creates registry resources, generates TLS material, copies images with a Kubernetes Job, and exposes the registry after setup. AWS lifecycle setup prepares registry artifacts for an image-mirroring cluster variant. New hosted-cluster checks validate image-mirror mappings in hosted IDMS resources and the control-plane ignition ConfigMap.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: adding an e2e v2 test that checks imageContentSources propagation to the IDMS and the ignition ConfigMap. The changeset matches this. It adds an image-mirroring lifecycle variant, the mirror-registry fixture, and tests that compare the worker-role ImageDigestMirrorSet and the ignition ConfigMap against the HostedCluster spec. The title does not mention the mirror-registry fixture, which is a large part of the diff, but it still describes the primary objective. The title is 89 characters and 12 words, which is within a reasonable length. It also carries the CNTRLPLANE-3927 ticket prefix. The PR comments note that the ticket has no target version set, which is a tracking issue and does not affect the title check.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The changed Ginkgo titles are static descriptive strings. The two It titles and the Describe title in test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go contain no pod names, namespaces, timestamps, UUIDs, node names, IP addresses, or generated values. The suite uses valid bracketed metadata labels and no legacy openshift-tests-private naming tokens. Other added tests use Go testing names, not Ginkgo titles.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The added Ginkgo coverage meets the stated structure requirements. The two It blocks each validate one independent propagation path: the hosted-cluster IDMS and the ignition ConfigMap. Both cluster polling operations use a 10-minute timeout and 3-second polling interval. Assertions include diagnostic messages, and the port-forwarded client is closed with DeferCleanup. The suite is marked with internal.InformingLabel. The tests are read-only and create no cluster-scoped resources requiring cleanup.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds a mirror-registry Deployment and copy Job, but neither sets topology-sensitive scheduling constraints. The Deployment uses one replica with Recreate strategy, and the Job has no affinity, topology spread, node selector, toleration, or PDB settings. The one-replica HostedCluster NodePool test configuration is not an operator scheduling constraint. No stated topology incompatibility is introduced.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

No weak-crypto failure is introduced. The added mirror-registry code uses SHA-256 for resource/configuration hashes and image digests, and RSA certificates through the existing support/certs helpers. It contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage, and no secret/token comparisons requiring constant-time handling. The existing MD5 code in support/certs is unchanged and is not used by the new certificate-generation path.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

No listed container privilege violation is introduced. The new registry Deployment and image-copy Job set pod-level RunAsNonRoot: true and SeccompProfileTypeRuntimeDefault. Their containers set AllowPrivilegeEscalation: false and drop ALL capabilities. The changed manifests contain no Privileged: true, HostPID, HostNetwork, HostIPC, or SYS_ADMIN, and do not configure a root user.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The prior finding remains unresolved. The pull request adds copyReadError in test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry/copier.go, and its transient-error branch passes the raw err to klog.FromContext(ctx).Error at line 252. The function receives Kubernetes Job Get and Pod List errors at lines 272 and 287. Such errors can contain request URLs or internal API hostnames, which violates the check.

Resolution

Do not pass the raw error to the logger. Log a fixed retry message with only non-sensitive fields, such as the operation and resource kind. Return the original error to the retry logic without logging it.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request still introduces a disconnected-environment compatibility failure. The new AWS image-mirroring matrix lane runs AWSPlatformConfig.PreCreate, which calls setupImageMirroring. That setup uses DefaultRegistryImage, pinned at quay.io/libpod/registry@sha256:..., and the Job copier runs oc image mirror from that public source. The new Ginkgo suite has no [Skipped:Disconnected] marker. This creates a public-registry connectivity requirement in disconnected CI.

Resolution

IPv6 and disconnected network compatibility notice: This test may require external connectivity that fails in IPv6-only disconnected environments. Provide the registry image and source image through an internal or preloaded mirror, or skip the complete image-mirroring setup/lane for disconnected jobs. If address-specific handling is added, use GetIPAddressFamily() or GetIPFamilyForCluster().

Updated analysis: latest e2e-aws-5-0 failure

Investigated run, testing PR head 857e4687e7d65ca550a366d795b23ac12f94af53 on base ba33ffdda58c1d6c3d4f83c04e4ad85e172166b1.

The evidence strongly argues against this failure being caused by the PR's functional changes. This assessment is based on the actual execution and dependency paths, not on classifying the failure as a flake.

Actual failure

JUnit results show one failing leaf, with its ancestors reported as failed too:

TestKarpenter/Main/Parallel_provisioning_tests/OpenshiftEC2NodeClass_Kubelet_propagation

The ConfigMap, ignition annotation, NodeClass readiness and node provisioning checks passed. The test then failed while retrieving the kubelet-config-checker pod's logs, before reaching the assertion validating checker success. There is no observed expected-versus-actual kubelet-field mismatch. The checker result itself remains unknown.

Error sequence

The API-server log, line 4447, records a request to the kubelet's /containerLogs/kube-system/kubelet-config-checker/checker endpoint failing at 13:17:40.597885 UTC with:

remote error: tls: internal error

These TLS errors repeat through 13:19:10 UTC. Konnectivity initially establishes tunnels successfully; the final attempt at 13:19:47 UTC instead ends with:

backend context closed before connection was established

That final attempt produces the reported 502. The TLS errors precede it, so the final 502 alone does not explain the whole failure.

Relationship to this PR

  • Traced the actual job through the shared test-image build and hack/ci-test-e2e.sh to the legacy bin/test-e2e invocation.
  • The shared image also compiles the changed v2 binaries, but this test step does not execute them.
  • Successful dependency inspections at both the actual base and PR head, covering the legacy test binary, Karpenter operator, HyperShift operator and root CLI, found that none of the 21 changed files belongs to a package in those runtime dependency graphs.
  • The legacy tests import the unchanged test/e2e/v2/util parent package, not the new mirrorregistry subpackage.
  • This PR does not change the legacy failing test, checker, CSR controller, module/vendor inputs, Makefile or Dockerfile. The deployed Karpenter operator image digest was also checked against the run-built image and matched.

This is strong functional-path exclusion, not a controlled base-versus-PR experiment or proof that every possible indirect effect is impossible.

Remaining uncertainty

The immediate failure is log retrieval over the kubelet TLS connection. The precise reason for the TLS failure is unresolved; certificate availability/approval is only a hypothesis. The next useful evidence is the affected node's kubelet journal and CSR approval/signing timestamps around 13:17:30–13:19:50 UTC.

No code changes were made. A rerun can check reproducibility, but a pass on retry would not by itself establish the root cause.

AI-generated. Review for accuracy.

Done in 17ee54ec1e: the endpoint is now built with url.URL{Scheme: "https", Host: host, Path: "/v2/"}, and the local variable is renamed so it no longer shadows net/url.

Fair, the single ok == exposed hid two opposite meanings. On a request error ok stays false, so while waiting for the endpoint to come up we keep polling, and while waiting for withdrawal we treat it as no longer routed. 17ee54ec1e makes that explicit: each case now has its own branch and comment, and behaviour is unchanged. waitEndpoint also had no direct unit test, so the same commit adds TestWaitEndpoint, which covers both directions (request error, HTTP 503, HTTP 200, timeout) plus a real TLS server with an untrusted certificate during withdrawal.

}

When exposed=false (waiting for withdrawal), ok == exposed evaluates to true when the request fails for any reason — including TLS errors unrelated to actual withdrawal (e.g., a transient CA mismatch during cert rotation). The clientForWithdrawal function handles the expected CA rotation case, but other TLS failures (expired cert, clock skew) would also be treated as "withdrawn." This is acceptable for test infrastructure, but worth a brief comment noting the assumption: "any connection failure is treated as withdrawn."

Agreed, added a doc comment on waitEndpoint in 17ee54ec1e. While waiting for withdrawal, any request failure or non-200 response counts as "not routed". It is a second check: deExpose has already waited for the Route object to be deleted before probing. After withdrawal the router answers with its default certificate, so a TLS failure is the expected signal. A CA rotation alone does not cause a false result, because the withdrawal client trusts the CA that signed the certificate the running pod still serves (clientForWithdrawal).

@openshift-ci openshift-ci Bot removed the lgtm Indicates that a PR is ready to be merged. label Oct 26, 2026
waitEndpoint compared a single "answered 200" flag with the requested state,
which hid that a failed request means "not ready yet" while waiting for
exposure but "no longer routed" while waiting for withdrawal. Branch on the
requested state explicitly and document why any failure may count as
withdrawn. Build the endpoint with net/url instead of string concatenation.
Behaviour is unchanged; add direct table tests for both directions,
including a TLS verification failure during withdrawal.
