CNTRLPLANE-3928: e2e: verify workload pulls through the image mirror - #10075
#10029 checks that HostedCluster.spec.imageContentSources propagates to the hosted IDMS and to the CPO ignition
ConfigMap. It does not check that data plane nodes actually use the resulting registries.conf. This PR adds that
data-plane check: a third It in the existing [Feature:ImageMirroring] Describe, which runs on the static image-mirroring variant of the default AWS plan. There are no lifecycle, variant or TestMatrix changes.
Runs a restricted one-shot pod in its own generated namespace. The pod references the fixture's virtual source by digest: mirror-source.hypershift-e2e.invalid/libpod/registry@<digest of mirrorregistry.DefaultRegistryImage>.
The pod spec:
imagePullPolicy: Always;
command /bin/registry --version;
runAsNonRoot, RuntimeDefault seccomp, no privilege escalation, all capabilities dropped.
The pod must reach Succeeded with exit code 0. Diagnostics include the scheduling and container
waiting/terminated reasons. Configuration errors (CreateContainerConfigError, InvalidImageName, …) and non-zero
exits fail immediately.
Checks the digest against the mirror (the AC asks to compare the pod's digest with the mirror's).
So the test reads the manifest list from the mirror endpoint declared in the HC ICS, trusting only the HC additionalTrustBundle.
It verifies that the list hashes to the requested digest, then requires the container imageID digest to equal the
entry for the node's OS and architecture.
It also accepts the list digest itself, in case a future runtime reports the requested digest.
Why it can't pass for the wrong reason
No upstream fallback. The .invalid TLD never resolves (RFC 2606), so no node can fetch the virtual repository
from anywhere except an IDMS mirror.
No cache.imagePullPolicy: Always forces a registry round trip, so a cached copy can't satisfy the start.
The bytes come from the mirror. The mirror's manifest list must hash to the pinned digest, and the container's imageID must be that list's entry for the node's platform.
Independent oracle. Expectations come from the HC spec and the pinned input image. Nothing comes from the fixture
result or from the code under test (globalconfig, ignition serializers).
Informing, Gomega only, no test/e2e/util: the spec inherits internal.InformingLabel from the CNTRLPLANE-3927: add e2e v2 test for imageContentSources propagation to IDMS and ignition #10029 Describe. imageMirroringSetupOrSkip takes a g Gomega (specs pass Default), as required by the e2e v2 AGENTS.md
assertion-helper rules. The pod wait is a Gomega Eventually(func(g Gomega, ctx context.Context) {…}) in the spec
body (GET errors keep polling, terminal check errors stop through StopTrying), so a timeout goes through InformingAwareFailHandler. No v1 utility, no allowlist changes; the mirror read uses only stdlib (net/http, crypto/tls).
The helper unit tests run in CI:TestImageMirroring.* is added to the -run filter of make test-e2ev2-unit,
which make test (and therefore ci/prow/unit) runs. Running the whole package would start the Ginkgo suite.
No by-tag negative control.CNTRLPLANE-3928 only requires digest mirroring, and the reasons below already rule
out any origin other than the mirror (see the review discussion).
Registry access logs were not used as evidence. They need a management clientset, grepping them is fragile (the
story itself warns about this), and the digest check above already covers it.
Timeout: 10 min / 5 s for the pull (the pull itself took < 1 s in manual runs).

Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded image-mirroring end-to-end coverage to verify digest-pinned workload pulls through the mirror and confirm the pulled image matches an expected digest.
Added checks for mirror configuration, manifest integrity, trust settings, platform-specific digests, Linux node readiness, and workload pull outcomes.
Warning: The referenced jira issue has an invalid target version for the target branch this PR targets: expected the story to target the "5.1.0" version, but no target version was set.
Depends on #10029. This PR is stacked on #10029. Only the last commit (test(e2e): verify workload pulls through the image mirror) belongs to this PR. Holding until #10029 merges.

What this PR does / why we need it:
The pod spec:
imagePullPolicy: Always;
command /bin/registry --version;
runAsNonRoot, RuntimeDefault seccomp, no privilege escalation, all capabilities dropped.
The pod must reach Succeeded with exit code 0. Diagnostics include the scheduling and container
waiting/terminated reasons. Configuration errors (CreateContainerConfigError, InvalidImageName, …) and non-zero
exits fail immediately.
Negative control. The same repository by tag must fail with ErrImagePull or ImagePullBackOff. If the
image is obtained in any way (running, terminated, or CreateContainerConfigError after the pull), the test fails
immediately.
Only by-digest redirection is in play. The by-tag negative control shows the source is unreachable and that
by-digest redirection is what made the positive case work.
Independent oracle. Expectations come from the HC spec and the pinned input image. Nothing comes from the fixture
result or from the code under test (globalconfig, ignition serializers).
No new test/e2e/util symbols, no allowlist changes: the mirror read uses only stdlib (net/http, crypto/tls).
Registry access logs were not used as evidence. They need a management clientset, grepping them is fragile (the
story itself warns about this), and the digest check above already covers it.
Timeouts: 10 min / 5 s for the positive pull (the pull itself took < 1 s in manual runs) and 5 min / 5 s for the
negative control (DNS failure is immediate).

Walkthrough
The changes add a loader for HostedCluster image-mirroring setup and helpers to locate the mirror, construct digest references, read the trust bundle, and fetch and validate a manifest list. A new end-to-end test creates a digest-pinned workload, waits for it to complete, and checks its image ID against the manifest-list or platform digest. Unit tests cover setup loading and workload helpers. The test-e2ev2-unit target now runs the image-mirroring helper tests.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
All Ginkgo titles in the changed spec are static. The new title is should pull a workload image by digest through the mirror when the source is unreachable; it contains no pod, namespace, node, timestamp, IP, UUID, or generated value. The existing Describe and two existing It titles are also static and contain no prohibited legacy metadata tokens. Dynamic names such as the generated namespace and pod are used only in the test body and diagnostics.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only e2e test helpers, e2e tests, and the Makefile. It adds no deployment, controller, operator, replica, anti-affinity, topology-spread, PDB, taint, or control-plane/worker node-role scheduling configuration. The new pod selects only kubernetes.io/os=linux, which does not target a restricted topology role or assume dedicated workers.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The pull request introduces only standard-library SHA-256 hashing for manifest integrity checks and standard TLS/X.509 test setup. It does not add MD5, SHA-1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, or ECB usage. Digest comparisons are checks of public image references, not secret or token comparisons, and no custom cryptographic implementation is added.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The added workload pod is non-privileged. Its PodSecurityContext sets RunAsNonRoot=true and RuntimeDefault seccomp. Its container sets AllowPrivilegeEscalation=false and drops ALL capabilities. The changed pod manifest does not set privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, or a root user. The added unit test verifies these restricted settings.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The prior sensitive-log finding remains in PR-introduced code. imageMirroringFetchManifest includes the mirror host, repository, and full HTTPS URL in errors and includes up to 512 bytes of the response body (hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_workload_helpers.go:130-149). The workload test passes the digest reference and mirror host/repository into Gomega failure text (hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go:100-101,129,135). imageMirroringPodSummary includes Kubernetes condition, waiting, and termination messages (...workload_helpers.go:261-274), which reach StopTrying and assertion output (...test.go:133-138). imageMirroringCheckImageID includes the runtime image ID and accepted digests in its error (...workload_helpers.go:326-335), and the virtual-mirror helper includes Route hosts, repositories, and complete mappings in errors (...workload_helpers.go:61-63). These values can expose internal hostnames, runtime data, and untrusted response content in E2E logs.
Resolution
Redact mirror hosts, repositories, digest references, and full URLs from failure text. Replace wrapped network errors and raw response bodies with generic endpoint-operation and HTTP-status messages. Make pod summaries contain only safe phase and fixed reason codes; omit condition, waiting, termination, and Kubernetes messages. Limit mapping diagnostics to safe fixture identifiers and counts. Do not include runtime image IDs or complete digest mappings in errors.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The previous quality failure remains unresolved. In hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go, all three It blocks still call getTestCtx() directly (lines 49, 68, and 84); the registration has no BeforeEach that obtains and validates a per-spec context. The workload digest assertion at line 147 still has no meaningful message: Expect(imageMirroringCheckImageID(...)).To(Succeed()). The tests retain internal.InformingLabel, explicit Eventually timeouts, and cleanup for the hosted client, namespace, and pod.
Resolution
Add a BeforeEach that obtains and validates the test context, store that context in the registration closure, and pass it to all three specs instead of calling getTestCtx() in each It. Add an assertion message to the image-ID check that includes the pod name and accepted digests. Keep internal.InformingLabel unless the specs are intentionally promoted to blocking.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The new image-mirroring Ginkgo test retains two incompatibilities. imageMirroringFetchManifest builds https://%s/... with host in hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_workload_helpers.go:129-130; an IPv6 literal is not bracketed. The test also uses mirrorregistry.DefaultRegistryImage at hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go:91, which is quay.io/libpod/registry@... (util/mirrorregistry/api.go:24-29). The image-mirroring fixture provisions this image with oc image mirror from Quay in lifecycle/aws.go:262-267, so the lane still depends on public registry access. The new It has no disconnected skip. These claims match the standing failure and remain unresolved.
Resolution
Construct the manifest URL with IPv6-safe host handling, such as net.JoinHostPort when a port is present. Use an internal or preloaded source image for fixture seeding, or add [Skipped:Disconnected] when public registry access is required. Run /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6 for verification.

Review at 375987b against CNTRLPLANE-3928 and the e2e v2 standards, including the pending AGENTS.md update in #10115. I found no correctness defect in the positive digest-mirroring path. The comments focus on the scope of the by-tag control, helper contracts, test wiring, and cleanup.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I would remove the by-tag negative control. It tests that IDMS does not redirect tag pulls, but CNTRLPLANE-3928 only requires digest mirroring. The positive pod already uses an unresolvable source with PullAlways and verifies both the mirror manifest digest and the Pod imageID. If we want to enforce IDMS-only behavior, the existing IDMS test can assert that no ImageTagMirrorSet is generated. Remove the by-tag pod and its unused helpers and unit tests.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, removed in 122c4ec, together with imageMirroringCheckPullRejected[Pod], imageMirroringIsSourceDNSFailure, imageMirroringNegativeTag and their table tests.
The by-digest pod already rules out every origin other than the mirror: the source host is under .invalid (it never resolves), the pod pulls with PullAlways, the manifest list read from the mirror must hash to the pinned digest, and the Pod imageID must be that list's entry for the node's platform. Removing the by-tag pod also drops the dependency on resolver error text and on the kubelet back-off message format, which you flagged in the other thread.
I didn't add the ImageTagMirrorSet assertion to the IDMS test: CNTRLPLANE-3928 doesn't require it, and it would check HCCO output rather than data-plane behavior. Happy to add it as a follow-up if you want it.

PR #10115 adds a rule that assertion helpers must accept g Gomega and use that instance for assertions. imageMirroringSetupOrSkip still uses global Expect. Please add g Gomega to its signature, use g.Expect, and pass Default from the spec bodies. This signature also changed, and TESTING.md requires coverage for modified functions. Please add a test or explain why this Ginkgo wrapper is exempt.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 122c4ec. imageMirroringSetupOrSkip(g Gomega, tc) now asserts only through g, and the three specs pass Default.
For coverage, I moved its decision logic into imageMirroringLoadSetup(ctx, client, hc). It reads the fixture Route and validates the setup, and it returns errors instead of asserting. TestImageMirroringLoadSetup covers it with a fake client: Route missing or HC without imageContentSources → not configured (the spec skips); a Route read error other than NotFound, or an invalid setup → error (the spec fails rather than skipping); a valid setup → the HC snapshot and the Route host. The remaining wrapper only fetches the HC, asserts the error and calls Skip. Those parts are Ginkgo/TestContext plumbing with no logic of their own, so I didn't add a test for it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
PR #10115 says polling helpers must accept g Gomega and use g.Eventually, not the global Eventually. This helper is also new and has no unit test. Please add the parameter and a focused test, or extract the polling decision so it can be tested without relying on Ginkgo timing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
With the by-tag pod gone, imageMirroringWaitPod had a single caller, so 122c4ec removes it. The Eventually now lives in the spec body, like the two IDMS/ConfigMap specs in this file. The decision it polls on, imageMirroringCheckPulledPod, was already pure and table-tested (TestImageMirroringCheckPulledPod, covering every done / keep-polling / terminal branch), so the polling decision stays testable without Ginkgo timing.

The GHA Unit Tests workflow runs for this PR, but the other shard in .github/workflows/test-reusable.yaml:74 does not include ./test/e2e/v2/tests. E2E Compile only builds the binary. Please add a dedicated target or GHA step using go test -tags=e2ev2 -run '^TestImageMirroring' ./test/e2e/v2/tests, or move the pure helper tests to a package covered by the unit matrix. Adding the whole package to test-shard would also start the Ginkgo suite, which requires a hosted cluster.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Good catch, this was true for the #10029 helper tests too. Fixed in c54798a with the first option you suggested, a dedicated selection, by reusing the target that already exists for this: TestImageMirroring.* is added to the -run filter of make test-e2ev2-unit, next to TestComponentSupportsTLSConfig and TestVerifyIntermediateTLSConnectivityAfterDowngrade.
make test depends on test-e2ev2-unit, and ci/prow/unit runs make test. You can see the target's first line in this PR's unit build log. So the tests now run on every PR without starting the Ginkgo suite: go test -list with that filter selects the 20 TestImageMirroring* tests and not TestE2E.
I preferred this over a new GHA step for two reasons: it follows the existing pattern for unit tests in this package, and it doesn't change workflow files. The AGENTS.md update in #10115 asks for CI/framework changes to be discussed first. If you'd still rather have the GHA step, I can add it.

imageMirroringPodSummary and imageMirroringContainerStatus dereference pod without a nil check. Their current callers check nil first, but test/e2e/v2/AGENTS.md section 11 says to nil-check before dereferencing. Please add guards or enforce the non-nil precondition in one place.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 122c4ec. Both functions now guard against a nil pod: imageMirroringContainerStatus(nil) returns nil, and imageMirroringPodSummary(nil) returns pod <nil>. TestImageMirroringPodState covers both.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
If the by-tag control stays, this assertion depends on the resolver text lookup <host> ... no such host. A kubelet, CRI-O, or resolver change can fail the test without a mirroring regression. Please narrow that dependency or document the runtime versions it covers.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Resolved by removing the by-tag control (see the first thread). Nothing in the test matches resolver or kubelet message text anymore. Pull failure messages are only logged in the polling reason for diagnostics.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Optional cleanup. The digest parser and TLS client repeat logic already in test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry. Reuse or export those helpers so the tests do not maintain a second version of the digest and CA setup.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I'd rather keep these separate, and here is why.
The test checks the fixture, so it shouldn't share its code. The test verifies that the mirror serves the pinned content: it rechecks the digest of what the mirror returns and connects trusting only the CA from the HC additionalTrustBundle. If it called the fixture's digest validation and TLS setup, the checker would depend on the code it checks: a bug in those helpers (say, a too-permissive digest pattern, or a client that trusts more than the given CA) would reach both sides and could go unnoticed. CNTRLPLANE-3927: add e2e v2 test for imageContentSources propagation to IDMS and ignition #10029 follows the same rule: expectations come from the HC spec and the pinned input image, never from the fixture or from the code under test. Keeping the test-side code separate is cheap insurance for that.
The two pieces of code don't do the same job. The fixture's splitDigestRef validates its input refs and checks for exactly one @. The test's helpers parse a different input: the runtime's imageID, which can carry a docker-pullable:// prefix and must be rejected when it is a bare image ID. The fixture's TLS client is built inline in Setup. It trusts the CA the fixture manages (generated, stored in its Secret, or supplied by the caller), swaps in the stored CA during withdrawal, and blocks redirects for its de-exposure probe. The test's client trusts the CA the HC declares. The overlap is a single regex and about 10 lines of standard library setup.
It would add public API to a shared util for little gain. The digest helper is unexported, and the TLS client isn't a separate function at all. Reusing them means refactoring the fixture and exporting new symbols from test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry, which then become part of its contract for other callers (3923/3924 will use the fixture too). The test-side code needs no maintenance from the fixture side, so I don't think the extra API is worth it.
If you feel strongly about it, I can export a small digest-pattern helper in a follow-up, but I'd keep the TLS client separate for reason 1.

Optional cleanup. imageMirroringPodSummary, imageMirroringCheckPulledPod, and imageMirroringCheckPullRejected all interpret the same container state. A small state classifier would keep their handling consistent.

With the by-tag control removed, one of the three functions you listed (imageMirroringCheckPullRejected) is gone. That leaves two readers of the container state, and they answer different questions:
imageMirroringPodSummary only renders the state for diagnostics;
imageMirroringCheckPulledPod decides done / keep polling / terminal failure. It switches on the waiting reason and on the exit code.
Both use the same imageMirroringContainerStatus lookup, which is now nil-safe. With one decision function left, a classifier would add a layer without removing any duplicated rule, so I've left it out. If CNTRLPLANE-3937 or a later test needs a second decision over the same states, that's the point where I'd add it.
Prove that data plane nodes consume the IDMS registries.conf generated from
HostedCluster imageContentSources, not only that the policy propagates.
Run a restricted one-shot pod that references the fixture's virtual source
(an unresolvable .invalid host) by digest with imagePullPolicy Always, so it
can only start if the node pulled from the mirror. CRI-O reports the
per-platform manifest digest for a manifest-list pull, so read the list from
the mirror endpoint declared in the HC spec, trusting only the HC
additionalTrustBundle, verify it hashes to the requested digest, and require
the container imageID to match the node's platform entry.
The existing setup gate now takes a Gomega instance and also returns the
fixture Route host. Its decision logic moves to imageMirroringLoadSetup,
which returns errors instead of asserting, so a missing Route still skips
while an API error or an invalid setup fails. Cover it and the reference,
manifest, trust bundle, and pod state helpers with unit tests.

The pure helper tests in test/e2e/v2/tests were not run by any CI job:
the GHA unit shards do not include that package, because running it
whole would start the Ginkgo suite, which needs a hosted cluster.
Add TestImageMirroring.* to the existing test-e2ev2-unit -run filter.
make test depends on that target, so ci/prow/unit now runs them.

What this PR does / why we need it:
#10029 checks that

A single shared constant (for example exported fromlifecycle) can follow if you prefer it.hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_workload_helpers.go, so the CNTRLPLANE-3927: add e2e v2 test for imageContentSources propagation to IDMS and ignition #10029 helper file barelychanges and the removal test (CNTRLPLANE-3937) can build on them.
