CNTRLPLANE-3937: e2e: verify mirror cleanup when imageContentSources is removed - #10079
Depends on #10075 (stacked; only the last two commits belong to this PR).
/hold until the dependency merges.
What this PR does / why we need it:
Adds a day-2 e2e v2 lifecycle test: removing imageContentSources from a HostedCluster that had it cleans up the
mirror configuration and rolls the nodes out.
Commits
test(e2e): run image-mirroring tests as a sequential lane: in the default AWS TestMatrix, the image-mirroring variant moves from Parallel to a SequentialGroup: [image-mirroring (read-only), image-mirroring-removal].
test(e2e): verify mirror cleanup when imageContentSources is removed: the new spec, its pure helpers and their
table unit tests.
What the test checks. All expected values come from the HC spec and the pinned fixture image.
Baseline:
the ignition CM and the hosted IDMS carry the mappings;
every NodePool is Replace, AllNodesHealthy=True, and not updating;
the names of the Ready nodes are recorded.
spec.imageContentSources = nil.
CPO:ConfigMap <cp-ns>/ignition-config-40-image-content-source is deleted.
HCCO:ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster still exists, with noimageDigestMirrors.
NodePool: every pool reaches UpdatingConfig=True first, then every pool reaches UpdatingConfig=False + AllNodesHealthy=True (30 min for a 1-node Replace). Waiting in two passes matters with several pools: they roll
out at once, and a pool that finishes while an earlier one is still rolling would otherwise never be seen updating.
Node replacement: exactly replicas Ready nodes, none of which was in the baseline. This is the
non-vacuous oracle that the rollout really happened.
Data plane: a by-digest pod on the mirror-only virtual source
(mirror-source.hypershift-e2e.invalid/libpod/registry@<digest>) must reach ErrImagePull/ImagePullBackOff.
Any sign that the image was obtained is a terminal failure.
Verified production behaviour (an empty IDMS, not a deletion).
HO reconcileHostedControlPlane copies ImageContentSources to the HCP unconditionally.
HCCO reconcileImageContentPolicyType always runs CreateOrUpdate on ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster through globalconfig.ReconcileImageDigestMirrors. That resets spec.imageDigestMirrors and then appends the HCP sources,
so after removal the object stays, empty.
CPO deletes the ignition CM when HasImageMirrorPolicies is false.
The worker label on the empty IDMS is not asserted, because it's not in the AC.
Why a sequential lane. The removal is a day-2 mutation, so it runs as the last step on the same image-mirroring variant and doesn't affect other lanes (agreed with the e2e v2 owners when the variant was designed
for #10029). Labels:
the removal spec lives under its own top-level Describe with Label("lifecycle", "image-mirroring-removal", internal.InformingLabel);
since Ginkgo labels are inherited from containers, this keeps it out of the read-only image-mirroring filter.
If the read-only step fails, run-tests skips the removal. That's intended, because the removal starts from the
state the read-only step verifies.
Why the ICS isn't restored. This is a deliberate exception to the e2e v2 "capture and restore" rule:
the spec is the last step on a dedicated 1-node variant, which destroy-guests and the disposable management
cluster remove with the job;
a restore would cost a second NodePool rollout for nothing.
A code comment next to the mutation says the same. The temporary namespace and pod still get DeferCleanup.
Hosted client. It's a short-lived port-forward per phase: one for the baseline and the CPO/HCCO checks, a fresh
one after the rollout. During the rollout only the management cluster is polled, so no tunnel to a single KAS pod
has to survive 20+ minutes.
Wall-clock time. About +15–20 min on the image-mirroring lane (one Replace of 1 node). It runs in parallel
with the much longer public → public-nodepool-rollouts lane, so the e2e-v2-aws total shouldn't grow.
Informing, Gomega only. The spec is informing until proven stable, like the other image-mirroring specs. Every
wait uses Gomega Eventually(func(g Gomega, ctx context.Context) {…}), so a timeout goes through InformingAwareFailHandler; the v1 test/e2e/util waits fail through GinkgoT and would bypass it. The HC update
uses retry.RetryOnConflict, so the spec does not import test/e2e/util at all.
Fleet-wide rollout impact: none. This PR changes no production code, no NodePool config hash inputs and no test/e2e/util symbols or allowlist entries.
make verify: everything passed except one transient verify-capi-decoupling failure. A generated file was
missing because another target was regenerating it concurrently. Re-run on its own, it passes, and the tree is clean.
make run-gitlint, pre-commit: passed.
Label dry-run (bin/test-e2e-v2 --ginkgo.dry-run):
image-mirroring → only the 3 read-only specs;
image-mirroring-removal → only the new removal spec;
all four specs carry the Informing label.
Not done: live run on a dev management cluster. It was intentionally skipped, because the placement and cost
decision was already taken in the Slack thread. The first CI run on e2e-v2-aws will give the real rollout time.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded end-to-end coverage for hosted-cluster image mirroring, including successful digest pulls and rejected tag pulls from an unreachable source.
Added coverage for removing image-mirroring configuration, verifying that mappings are cleared, node pools roll out with replacement nodes, and mirror-only pulls are rejected afterward.
Updated test scheduling so the removal scenario runs after other image-mirroring checks.
Warning: The referenced jira issue has an invalid target version for the target branch this PR targets: expected the story to target the "5.1.0" version, but no target version was set.
Depends on #10075 (stacked; only the last two commits belong to this PR).
/hold until the dependency merges.

The changes add hosted-cluster workload checks for digest pulls through an image mirror and rejected tag pulls. They also add a removal test that clears image sources, checks configuration and NodePool updates, verifies node replacement, and expects a digest pull to be rejected. The AWS plan runs the regular image-mirroring test before the mutating removal test in one sequential group.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
All Ginkgo titles introduced or changed by the PR are static. The new titles describe mirror workload pulling and mirror cleanup without pod names, node names, namespaces, timestamps, UUIDs, IPs, or other run-dependent values. The two Describe titles use standard static labels and do not contain any prohibited legacy naming tokens. Dynamic values appear only in assertions and setup messages, not test titles.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request changes only e2e lifecycle and test helper/test files. It adds no deployment manifests, operator code, or controllers. The only scheduling-related field in the changed code is a Linux OS nodeSelector on a temporary test pod; it does not target control-plane or worker roles and does not add anti-affinity, topology spread, replica-derived scheduling, tolerations, or PDB constraints. The test also counts Ready Linux nodes rather than introducing a production scheduling assumption.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The added Ginkgo tests use the cluster mirror Route and the internal .invalid virtual source. They add no hardcoded IPv4 addresses and no connections to public internet hosts. The waitEndpoint helper and public image fixture setup are unchanged by this pull request, so they do not establish a new changed-code compatibility failure. Prior failure refuted: The added tests do not call waitEndpoint; that helper is unchanged. The production pull uses the cluster Route, while the virtual source is .invalid and the image content is served by the mirror, not a public registry.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
No prohibited weak cryptography is introduced. The changed code uses standard-library SHA-256 for image digests, ECDSA P-256 only in test certificate setup, and TLS with a minimum version of 1.2. The diff contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom crypto, or secret/token comparisons.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The changed workload pod uses RunAsNonRoot=true, RuntimeDefault seccomp, AllowPrivilegeEscalation=false, and drops all capabilities. The added code does not set privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, or SYS_ADMIN, and does not configure root execution.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The pull request adds sensitive values to failure output. imageMirroringFetchManifest includes the full HTTPS URL, wrapped transport error, and up to 512 bytes of response data in errors at test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_workload_helpers.go:133-152. The new test passes that error to Gomega at hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go:108-109, so the URL and response data can appear in logs. New pod and NodePool summaries also copy raw status messages, which can contain registry or internal endpoint details. The prior raw-error findings in test/e2e/v2/util/mirrorregistry/copier.go:252 and registry.go:373-375 remain unchanged in the reviewed range.
Resolution
Sanitize imageMirroringFetchManifest errors. Keep only a safe repository/path identifier, HTTP status, and bounded non-sensitive error classification. Omit the full URL, response body, and unsanitized transport error. Restrict pod and NodePool failure summaries to stable reason/status fields instead of raw controller or kubelet messages. Also change copyReadError to log only a stable operation and resource identifier, and sanitize registry.go endpoint diagnostics so they do not include full URLs or raw transport errors.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The prior assertion-message failure remains unresolved. The changed Ginkgo test still has four assertions without meaningful messages in test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_image_mirroring_test.go: line 148 checks the pulled image ID, line 206 checks the baseline ConfigMap validation error, line 219 checks each NodePool baseline, and line 231 checks the baseline hosted IDMS validation error. These assertions violate the explicit assertion-message requirement. The changed Eventually calls have timeouts, cleanup callbacks cover created workload resources, and the new specs use informing labels.
Resolution
Add resource-specific assertion messages: identify the pod and accepted image IDs at line 148; identify the ConfigMap and HC at line 206; identify the NodePool at line 219; and identify the hosted IDMS and HC at line 231. Preserve the existing timeouts, cleanup callbacks, and informing labels.

Prove that data plane nodes consume the IDMS registries.conf generated from
HostedCluster imageContentSources, not only that the policy propagates.
Run a restricted one-shot pod that references the fixture's virtual source
(an unresolvable .invalid host) by digest with imagePullPolicy Always, so it
can only start if the node pulled from the mirror. CRI-O reports the
per-platform manifest digest for a manifest-list pull, so read the list from
the mirror endpoint declared in the HC spec, trusting only the HC
additionalTrustBundle, verify it hashes to the requested digest, and require
the container imageID to match the node's platform entry. As a negative
control, the same repository by tag must fail to pull, showing that by-digest
redirection is what made the positive case pass. Reuse the existing setup
gate, which now also returns the fixture Route host, and cover the reference,
manifest, trust bundle, and pod state helpers with unit tests.

Make room for a day-2 imageContentSources removal check on the
image-mirroring variant without letting it race the read-only specs.
Move the image-mirroring group from the parallel matrix into a sequential
group whose steps run the read-only image-mirroring specs first and the
image-mirroring-removal spec last. The removal mutates the HostedCluster
and is not restored, so it must stay the last step on the variant. Assert
the lane shape, the step order, and that the default AWS plan still
validates.

Cover the day-2 path where imageContentSources is removed from a
HostedCluster that had it, as required by CNTRLPLANE-3937.
After a baseline check, clear imageContentSources and verify each
independent effect: the CPO deletes the ignition-config-40-image-content-source
ConfigMap, the HCCO keeps the hosted ImageDigestMirrorSet/cluster with no
mappings, every NodePool rolls out with Replace and returns healthy, and
none of the pre-removal nodes survives. A by-digest pod on the mirror-only
virtual source must then fail to pull, proving the new nodes no longer
redirect to the mirror. Hosted clients are opened per phase and only the
management cluster is polled during the rollout. The HC is not restored:
this is the last step on a dedicated variant destroyed with the job.
All NodePools roll out at once, so wait for every pool to start before
waiting for any to finish; otherwise a pool that finishes early would never
be seen updating. All waits use Gomega, so failures go through the
informing-aware fail handler, and the spec does not use the v1 test/e2e/util
package.
Run the spec under its own informing Describe and label so the read-only
image-mirroring filter cannot select it, and cover the empty IDMS, NodePool
baseline and conditions, node replacement, and pull rejection helpers with
unit tests.

Make the removed-source pull check prove the mirror was reachable from the negative pod's node.
imageMirroringCheckRemovedPullRejectedPod treats any ErrImagePull or ImagePullBackOff as success. Those states also occur when the mirror is unreachable. If the mirror fails during the removal window while a stale redirect remains, the check passes even though removal did not work.
The negative pod has no node pin. The AWS variant creates one NodePool per zone, each with one replica, so the pod can run on any replacement worker. Nothing after removal shows that the mirror was reachable from that worker. The pre-removal positive pull runs before removal and is not pinned to a replacement node.
Add a per-node control. On the replacement worker that runs the negative pod, or on every replacement worker, pull the same digest directly from the mirror host and require success. Pin the negative pod and the control to the same node. Only then does an ErrImagePull from the mirror-only source show that the redirect was removed. Confirm that replacement nodes still trust the mirror CA after the ConfigMap is deleted. Otherwise the control can fail for a reason unrelated to the mirror.

Verified production behaviour (an empty IDMS, not a deletion).
reconcileHostedControlPlanecopiesImageContentSourcesto the HCP unconditionally.reconcileImageContentPolicyTypealways runsCreateOrUpdateonImageDigestMirrorSet/clusterthroughglobalconfig.ReconcileImageDigestMirrors. That resetsspec.imageDigestMirrorsand then appends the HCP sources,so after removal the object stays, empty.
HasImageMirrorPoliciesis false. The original Jira AC 1 ("IDMS deleted") was corrected accordingly:

The worker label on the empty IDMS is not asserted, because it's not in the AC.
Why a sequential lane. The removal is a day-2 mutation, so it runs as the last step on the same
image-mirroringvariant and doesn't affect other lanes (agreed with the e2e v2 owners when the variant was designedfor #10029). Labels:
DescribewithLabel("lifecycle", "image-mirroring-removal", internal.InformingLabel);image-mirroringfilter.If the read-only step fails,
run-testsskips the removal. That's intended, because the removal starts from thestate the read-only step verifies.
Why the ICS isn't restored. This is a deliberate exception to the e2e v2 "capture and restore" rule:
destroy-guestsand the disposable managementcluster remove with the job;
A code comment next to the mutation says the same. The temporary namespace and pod still get
DeferCleanup.Hosted client. It's a short-lived port-forward per phase: one for the baseline and the CPO/HCCO checks, a fresh
one after the rollout. During the rollout only the management cluster is polled, so no tunnel to a single KAS pod
has to survive 20+ minutes.
Wall-clock time. About +15–20 min on the image-mirroring lane (one
Replaceof 1 node). It runs in parallelwith the much longer
public→public-nodepool-rolloutslane, so thee2e-v2-awstotal shouldn't grow.Informing, Gomega only. The spec is informing until proven stable, like the other image-mirroring specs. Every
wait uses Gomega
Eventually(func(g Gomega, ctx context.Context) {…}), so a timeout goes throughInformingAwareFailHandler; the v1test/e2e/utilwaits fail throughGinkgoTand would bypass it. The HC updateuses
retry.RetryOnConflict, so the spec does not importtest/e2e/utilat all.Fleet-wide rollout impact: none. This PR changes no production code, no NodePool config hash inputs and no
test/e2e/utilsymbols or allowlist entries.Which issue(s) this PR fixes:
