Explanation
The new test file contains many assertions without meaningful failure messages. Examples include
Expect(err).NotTo(HaveOccurred())at lines 53, 193, 286, 380, and 490, and bare client-operation assertions such asCreate,Patch, andGetat lines 230, 240, 257, and 263. The same issue occurs inside polling callbacks at lines 74, 85, 623, and 626. This matches the check's explicit assertion-message failure condition. The cluster waits do have explicit timeouts, and created Secrets are registered withDeferCleanup.Resolution
Add a diagnostic message to every assertion in the new file that currently has none. Include the operation and resource identity, such as
"failed to get HostedCluster %s/%s","failed to create test Secret %s/%s", and"failed to patch HostedCluster encryption key". Apply the same rule to allg.Expectcalls insideEventuallycallbacks.

Explanation
The new AWS KMS and Azure KMS Ginkgo tests require access to cloud KMS services outside the cluster. The tests patch
HostedCluster.spec.secretEncryptionwith an alternate AWS KMS ARN or Azure Key Vault key version (lines 200-240 and 293-333), then require re-encryption to complete. The PR description also requires IAM access to the alternate AWS key and creation of an Azure Key Vault key version. No IPv4-only address or parsing assumption was found.Resolution
IPv6 and disconnected network compatibility notice: This test may contain IPv4 assumptions or external connectivity requirements that will fail in IPv6-only disconnected environments. Please verify your test works on IPv6 by running an additional CI job: For parallel tests:
/payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6For serial tests (test name contains[Serial]):/payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-serial-ovn-ipv6In theopenshift/originrepo, useGetIPAddressFamily()to detect the cluster's IP family and adapt accordingly. You can also useGetIPFamilyForCluster()orInIPv4ClusterContext()when the test requires IPv4. If the KMS tests cannot use an internal or private endpoint in disconnected environments, add[Skipped:Disconnected]to those test names.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
-
Explanation
The new KAS log assertion can expose raw cluster logs in test output.
verifyKASLogsNoDecryptionErrorsreads up to 500 KAS log lines intologContentand passes that string toExpect(...).NotTo(ContainSubstring(...))at lines 177-179. The pinned Gomega v1.42.1ContainSubstringMatcher.NegatedFailureMessageformats the actual value withformat.Message; Gomega formats strings up toformat.MaxLength(4000 characters). Therefore, when the forbidden substring is found, the failure output includes up to 4000 characters of KAS logs, which may contain internal hostnames or request/customer data. This logging path was introduced by the pull request.Resolution
Do not pass raw KAS logs to a matcher that prints the actual value. Check
strings.Contains(logContent, "no matching prefix found")and fail with a fixed message, or assert only on a boolean/sanitized summary. Also avoid emitting unsanitized client errors if they can contain management API URLs or other sensitive values.

This will need integrated into the AWS v2 test matrix in order to prove it works on AWS |
|
Since these tests only run when the CI jobs are appropriately configured with the new environment variables, this change has to be coordinated with a related PR to openshift/release which updates the jobs to set up the tests to execute, in addition to ensuring they're included in the test matrix for the relevant platforms. You'll need to open a corresponding PR to openshift/release which sets up the appropriate environment for Azure/AWS in the v2 jobs, and run rehearsals on the o/r PR which use a development image containing your changes (pushed to your own Quay repository or something) to prove that this PR will work in CI. Then we can merge this, and then immediately merge the o/r PR and thus enable CI coverage and observe the outcome (and either keep or revert). It's an annoying workflow in these cases but I'm not yet aware of a better way. Open to ideas. |

Thanks for this — solid coverage of the re-encryption lifecycle across all three providers, and nice touch validating on real AWS + ARO-HCP clusters. A few things worth addressing; the first two I'd sort before merge.
1. Heavy duplication across the four rotation tests (the biggest one). The AWS / Azure / consecutive / AESCBC Its are ~90% identical: create test secret → DeferCleanup → snapshot history → patch activeKey → wait-started → wait-complete → verify status/secret/SVM/KAS/bubble-up. A table-driven helper parameterized by (platform predicate, rotate patch, restore patch, expected provider) would let each case express only its rotation delta — single-sourcing the shared assertions (easier to keep them in step) and dropping a few hundred lines. Concrete sketch inline.
Remaining findings are inline: the History-length rotation detection (correctness), the missing Informing labels, the KAS-log tail depth, and an int64Ptr → ptr.To swap.

Duplication (primary concern). This function and AzureKMSKeyRotationTest / AzureKMSConsecutiveKeyRotationTest / AESCBCKeyRotationTest share nearly their entire bodies. A table-driven form collapses them, e.g.:
type rotationCase struct {
name string
applies func(*hyperv1.HostedCluster) bool
rotate func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster) []byte // merge patch -> new activeKey
restore func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster) []byte // merge patch -> original activeKey
expectedProvider hyperv1.SecretEncryptionProvider
label string
}then a single shared It runs snapshot → patch → wait-started → wait-complete → the common verifyReEncryptionStatus / secret read-back / SVM / verifyKASHealth / verifyConditionBubbleUp assertions. Only the per-provider patch + skip guard differs, so the shared assertions live in one place.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
SecretEncryptionStatus.History is a newest-first ring buffer capped at MaxItems=5 (hostedcluster_types.go). Once it holds 5 entries, a new rotation prepends and evicts — the length stays 5, so len(...) > priorHistoryLen never becomes true and this Eventually times out even though re-encryption succeeded. Each test adds two entries (the rotation plus the DeferCleanup restore, which is itself a re-encryption), so a reused cluster saturates within ~2 suite runs, and the consecutive-rotation test can hit it within a single run.
Prefer a start signal that survives the cap: after the patch, wait for the EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate condition to go not-True (then True for completion), or for Status.SecretEncryption.TargetKey.Provider to become non-empty. (Minor: priorHistoryLen is read from an hc fetched before the baseline waitForReEncryptionComplete, so it can be stale even without the cap.)

This It (and ConditionBubbleUp at ~L619) omit the Label(internal.InformingLabel) that the three KMS tests carry, so they run as blocking while their siblings are informing. Since this is a new, cluster-mutating, up-to-25-min test with the same flakiness surface (see the History note), it'll gate the suite on any hiccup. Add the informing label to match — or make the difference deliberate if it's intended.

This tails only 500 lines of the current container. Across a 25-min re-encryption where KAS pods roll, a real no matching prefix found can land in a previous container instance or scroll past 500 lines → false pass. Consider a larger TailLines and also reading previous-container logs (Previous: true) so the assertion reliably catches decryption failures.

k8s.io/utils/ptr is already vendored — use ptr.To(int64(500)) at the call site and drop this local helper (matches repo convention).

A few things, mostly around collapsing the remaining duplication. The rotation JSON patches and the per-platform canary fixtures can go away entirely if the rotation is expressed as a typed field mutation patched with client.MergeFrom.
1. Replace raw JSON patches with typed MergeFrom
The hand-rolled fmt.Sprintf(...) merge-patch strings that build {"spec":{"secretEncryption":...}} (6 occurrences across the AWS/Azure/AESCBC setups + the consecutive test) are the main thing I'd change. A typed patch has identical wire semantics (both emit a JSON merge patch, so the same conflict-free behavior that made you reach for a patch over Update), but:
- compile-time type safety — a field rename breaks the build instead of silently no-op'ing;
- a typo'd path in a raw merge patch produces no error — the rotation just never happens and the test hangs to timeout;
- no
%q/escaping.
func rotateAndWait(ctx context.Context, tc *internal.TestContext, hcKey crclient.ObjectKey, mutate func(*hyperv1.HostedCluster)) {
hc := &hyperv1.HostedCluster{}
Expect(tc.MgmtClient.Get(ctx, hcKey, hc)).To(Succeed())
base := hc.DeepCopy()
mutate(hc)
Expect(tc.MgmtClient.Patch(ctx, hc, crclient.MergeFrom(base))).To(Succeed())
waitForReEncryptionStarted(ctx, tc.MgmtClient, hcKey, 5*time.Minute)
waitForReEncryptionComplete(ctx, tc.MgmtClient, hcKey, 25*time.Minute)
}Restore becomes just another rotation back to the captured original, so the restorePatch bytes disappear too. (One trade-off: MergeFrom restore needs a live base, so cleanup does a GET before patching vs. today's bare-object raw patch — one cheap extra GET.)
2. Shared canary + slimmer rotationCase
Only one case runs per cluster (the skip guards are mutually exclusive), so the distinct testSecretName/testSecretData per platform aren't disambiguating anything — a single shared const works, and the canary block (duplicated here + again in the consecutive test, and near-identical to the one already in hosted_cluster_secret_encryption_test.go) becomes one createCanarySecret helper.
With rotation as a typed mutation, rotationCase drops the patch-construction/fixture fields down to data + three one-line typed accessors:
type rotationCase struct {
contextLabel, itLabel string
expectedProvider hyperv1.SecretEncryptionProvider
applies func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster, tc *internal.TestContext) (skip bool, reason string)
// prepare provisions provider prerequisites (AESCBC creates its key Secret + cleanup)
// and returns the alternate activeKey value; KMS cases just read the *_ALTERNATE env var.
prepare func(ctx context.Context, tc *internal.TestContext, hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster) (alternate string, err error)
getActiveKey func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster) string
setActiveKey func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster, value string)
verifyProviderField func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster, alternate string)
}// AWS shrinks to:
runSingleRotationTest(get, rotationCase{
contextLabel: "[Feature:AWSKMSReencryption] AWS KMS Key Rotation",
itLabel: "should re-encrypt all etcd data after active key rotation",
expectedProvider: hyperv1.SecretEncryptionProviderAWS,
applies: /* AWS+KMS + env set */,
prepare: func(...) (string, error) { return internal.GetEnvVarValue("E2E_AWS_KMS_KEY_ARN_ALTERNATE"), nil },
getActiveKey: func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster) string { return hc.Spec.SecretEncryption.KMS.AWS.ActiveKey.ARN },
setActiveKey: func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster, v string) { hc.Spec.SecretEncryption.KMS.AWS.ActiveKey.ARN = v },
verifyProviderField: func(hc *hyperv1.HostedCluster, alt string) { Expect(hc.Status.SecretEncryption.ActiveKey.AWS.ARN).To(Equal(alt)) },
})The consecutive test then stops being a copy of the whole flow and is just two rotateAndWait calls (original→alternate→original) over the same helpers.
3. verifyConditionBubbleUp — dedupe + fix the flake
The 4 condition-comparison asserts exist twice: hard-Expect in verifyConditionBubbleUp, and again inline in ConditionBubbleUpTest's Eventually. The standalone test correctly retries because HCP→HC bubble-up is async — but the inline verifyConditionBubbleUp calls run single-shot right after a state transition, so a transient HC/HCP mismatch will flake. Give it a Gomega param and call it inside Eventually in both places:
func verifyConditionBubbleUp(g Gomega, ctx context.Context, c crclient.Client, hcKey crclient.ObjectKey, cpNamespace string) { /* g.Expect(...) */ }
// callers: Eventually(func(g Gomega){ verifyConditionBubbleUp(g, ...) }, 2*time.Minute, 10*time.Second).Should(Succeed())4. waitForReEncryptionStarted edge-trigger race
It infers "started" only by observing the condition != True while polling every 5s. If a rotation completes within a poll interval, that window is missed and the wait times out on a successful rotation. Real rotations take minutes so it's low-risk, but a direct in-progress signal (TargetKey set, or History[0].State != Completed) would be race-free — or at least a comment noting the assumption.
Left a few minor notes inline as well.

Magic number — int32(2) for the acceptable restart count is unexplained. A named const with a one-word rationale (or a short comment) would make the intent clear, e.g. why 2 and not 0/1.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. Introduced kasMaxAllowedRestarts = int32(2) with a comment explaining the rationale: one restart is expected from the KAS rollout carrying the new EncryptionConfiguration, and 2 allows one additional transient failure without masking a real crash loop.

A failure to fetch the current container logs here is only a warning + continue, so this pod silently passes the decryption-error check. Tolerating a missing previous-container log is correct (the pod may not have restarted), but failing to read the current container probably shouldn't be silent — consider making the current-container fetch a hard failure so the assertion can't be skipped unnoticed.

As written the canary is a readability-only check — it can pass even if re-encryption didn't actually migrate this object, since KAS keeps the old key in its keyring during/after rotation. To make it a real re-encryption assertion, consider the etcdctl + k8s:enc:...-prefix pattern already in KMSFunctionalValidationTest (e2eutil.RunCommandInPod) to confirm the stored ciphertext/key-id changed before vs. after. Otherwise the SVM + status checks already carry most of the weight and the canary could be dropped.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Thanks for the catch. The read-back only proves KAS can decrypt using its keyring, which always retains old keys during rotation, not that the specific object was re-encrypted. Since the SVM presence, status fields, and decryption-error log check already carry the real proof, I dropped the canary rather than add an etcdctl-based check.

Not all of my prior feedback about safe usage of Eventually within helpers was addressed. I also have a question about the way the new variant is configured which seems to be that its capabilities are changing implicitly based on an env var, which seems wrong...
The most important comment I have is around https://github.com/openshift/hypershift/pull/9227/changes#r4380469343 which is not only using Eventually unsafely but its actually defining test specs dynamically, which is highly unusual, risky to test identity, and seems overly complicated. I would like to understand alternatives considered.

I'm misunderstanding something here... why do we ever want a kms-reencryption variant created without this value? What does that variant represent if this value is empty? Is HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_KMS_KEY_ARN actually supposed to be required in our job definitions from now on for that variant to actually be a usable test target?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The kms-reencryption variant serves as the dedicated re-encryption cluster for key rotation tests (both KMS and AESCBC). When no KMS ARN is set, it's created as an AESCBC cluster and AESCBCKeyRotationTest runs on it. When the ARN is set, it's created as a KMS cluster and AWSKMSKeyRotationTest runs on it.
This "always create it" approach was implemented based on your feedback in #9227 (comment), and it also addresses Bryan's concern (r4336291155) about keeping re-encryption tests off the shared public cluster.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
That isn't what I had in mind... yes, there is now just one variant, but we're changing its fundamental configuration at runtime (to the extent even the name is incongruous with one of them... we're saying by default we're running AESCBC tests against a "kms" variant and we need to choose either AESCBC or KMS "mode" for the variant based on what, a different job configuration? Where's the plan for that?)
Let's back up: do we need to exercise both AESCBC and KMS encryption in e2e? If so, it seems like they both need their own variants and tests executing against the respective variants, and the KMS arguments become required for the e2e job.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
In the current implementation, the AESCBC test does not run on the shared public cluster — both AESCBC and KMS rotation tests run on the dedicated kms-reencryption cluster. The cluster type toggles based on whether HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_KMS_KEY_ARN is set. This was done to address Bryan's concern in r4336291155 about mutating the shared cluster.
I sent you and Bryan a Slack message last Friday laying out three options and asking for team input, but haven't heard back yet. Could you please reply on the thread so we can align on the direction before I make further code changes?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
After team discussion, we've decided to drop the AESCBC rotation test and focus e2e coverage on KMS key rotation only. The kms-reencryption variant is now only created when HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_KMS_KEY_ARN is set, and the TestMatrix matches.

As I mentioned in https://github.com/openshift/hypershift/pull/9227/changes#r4362615504, this has to be g.Eventually if you're going to call it from a helper otherwise the error handling is going to do wrong things when inner assertions fail
Consider whether you even need a function for this if there's only 1 caller

The inner calls to Eventually seems likely to break in the same way as described in https://github.com/openshift/hypershift/pull/9227/changes#r4362615504.
I'm very skeptical of this pattern. It's defining It() cases dynamically, which I don't think there's any precedent for within the codebase. It's unclear why this complexity is necessary at all. The risk of accidentally breaking test identity seems extremely high.
Please discuss why this is needed or what other approaches could possibly do what you need here without defining test suites dynamically

Originally each test was implemented explicitly — AWSKMSKeyRotationTest, AzureKMSKeyRotationTest, AESCBCKeyRotationTest each with their own Context/BeforeEach/It. This pattern was refactored based on explicit feedback from @muraee in #9227 (review) and #9227 (review), where he requested the table-driven rotationCase approach and provided the exact struct design we implemented. Happy to revisit, but would appreciate alignment between reviewers on the preferred direction before making changes.

We still want to avoid duplication code, but maybe the suggested implementation was not ideal. The It function can be extracted (i.e. #L339 - #L381) and then each test would define It() with it's labels directly and just reuse the extracted function, e.g.
func AWSKMSKeyRotationTest(getTestCtx internal.TestContextGetter) {
It("[Feature:AWSKMSReencryption] AWS KMS Key Rotation", "should re-encrypt all etcd data after active key rotation", Label(internal.InformingLabel), func() {
runRotationTest(g, ...)
}
}There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. Each test function now defines its own explicit Context, BeforeEach, and It, and calls the shared runRotationTest helper from within the It block.

why do we need this? This is mirroring the controller logic. I don't think we want to check the StorageVersionMigration in the guest cluster directly. The controller already aggregates those in the EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate condition

The original implementation had a simple listStorageVersionMigrations helper that listed all SVMs and asserted the list was non-empty. The current implementation was added specifically to address Bryan's feedback in #9227 (comment).
Happy to remove it if you and @bryan-cox agree the EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate condition is sufficient, but wanted to flag the conflict so you two can align first.

Done. verifyStorageVersionMigrations has been removed. The EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate condition check in waitForReEncryptionComplete is sufficient coverage since the controller already aggregates SVM status into that condition.

Re-fetch hc after waitForReEncryptionComplete to ensure priorHistoryLen reflects the actual current history length. …r fix, KAS log depth - Replace waitForReEncryptionStarted's History-length check with an EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate not-True wait. The old len(History) > prior check fails silently once History saturates its 5-item ring buffer cap, causing the Eventually to time out even on a successful rotation. - Collapse AWSKMSKeyRotationTest, AzureKMSKeyRotationTest, and AESCBCKeyRotationTest into a shared runSingleRotationTest helper parameterized by a rotationCase struct. Each test now expresses only its per-provider skip guard, patch construction, and provider-field assertion — the common lifecycle assertions live in one place. - Add Label(internal.InformingLabel) to AESCBCKeyRotationTest and ConditionBubbleUpTest to match the other KMS test siblings. - Check previous-container logs in verifyKASLogsNoDecryptionErrors and increase TailLines from 500 to 5000 to catch decryption errors from rolled KAS pods or long rotation windows. - Replace local int64Ptr helper with ptr.To(int64(...)) from the already- vendored k8s.io/utils/ptr package. The previous/current guard in verifyKASLogsNoDecryptionErrors was inverted: it warned and continued for the current container (silently skipping the decryption-error check) and silently skipped for the previous container (correct). The canary was a readability-only check: KAS keeps old keys in its keyring throughout rotation, so reading back a secret succeeds even if that specific object was never re-encrypted with the new key. The real coverage is carried by the SVM presence check, status field assertions (activeKey, history, completionTime), and KAS decryption-error log scan. Remove testSecretName/testSecretData from rotationCase, drop the canary create/delete/read-back from runSingleRotationTest and from AzureKMSConsecutiveKeyRotationTest. …Started Replace the EtcdDataEncryptionUpToDate != True edge-trigger with a check on TargetKey.Provider being non-empty. HCP→HC condition propagation is async: calling verifyConditionBubbleUp single-shot right after a state transition could catch the HC before the hypershift-operator copies the updated condition, causing a spurious failure. - Add Gomega param to verifyConditionBubbleUp so it can be used inside Eventually without panicking on assertion failure. - Wrap all three call sites in Eventually(2m, 10s). - Simplify ConditionBubbleUpTest to call the shared helper instead of duplicating the four assertions inline. Replace all six fmt.Sprintf raw JSON merge-patch byte slices with typed crclient.MergeFrom patches. Introduce a rotateAndWait helper that does Get → DeepCopy → mutate → MergeFrom → waitForReEncryptionStarted → waitForReEncryptionComplete, eliminating the repeated patch+wait pattern. Refactor rotationCase.setup (which returned raw []byte pairs) into three typed accessors — prepare (returns alternate key id), getActiveKey, and setActiveKey — plus a verifyProviderField(hc, alternate) that receives the alternate value directly instead of re-reading the env var. The AESCBC verifyProviderField now compares against the actual secret name returned by prepare rather than a hardcoded string. Remove the now-unused k8s.io/apimachinery/pkg/types import. Adds a `kms-reencryption` ClusterSpec variant to the AWS platform config that creates a hosted cluster with `--kms-key-arn` set.
