What this PR does / why we need it:

Adds CLI and E2E support for etcd sharding.

 • feat(cli) — new repeatable --etcd-shard flag on hypershift create cluster, with parsing and validation that mirrors the CRD schema so bad input fails in Validate rather than as an opaque admission error at apply time.
 • docs — a how-to covering the flag, which kinds are worth sharding, and the two easy-to-miss limitations (the EtcdSharding feature gate, and that --etcd-servers-overrides only applies to built-in types).
 • test(e2e) — an etcd-sharded cluster variant on AWS and Azure with dedicated test plans, covering shard deployment, KAS routing, per-kind key placement, member restart, and day-2 immutability.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

Fixes https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/CNTRLPLANE-4165

Walkthrough

The change adds the repeatable --etcd-shard option and parsing and validation for shard names, resources, replicas, and storage. It applies parsed shards to managed etcd configuration. It also adds E2E utilities, AWS and Azure cluster variants, and tests for shard deployment, routing, key placement, restarts, and update rejection. Dedicated test plans, shipped-plan validation, image copying, and documentation are included.

An invalid storage class can leave a partially applied cluster creation, while an unexpected missing selector makes the E2E test panic. Both are bounded issues that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

All added Ginkgo titles are static descriptive strings in test/e2e/v2/tests/etcd_sharding_test.go:56-325. They contain no pod names, namespaces, nodes, timestamps, UUIDs, IPs, generated identifiers, or legacy metadata tokens. Dynamic values appear only in test bodies and assertion messages.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

No topology-incompatible scheduling constraint is introduced. The changed production code adds the --etcd-shard CLI field, parsing, validation, and assignment to cluster.Spec.Etcd.Managed.Shards; it does not add affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, rollout settings, or PDB manifests. The E2E variants explicitly request HighlyAvailable, while the tests only inspect generated StatefulSets and PDBs. The existing control-plane operator and scheduling support files are unchanged in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The new Ginkgo suite in test/e2e/v2/tests/etcd_sharding_test.go uses management and hosted-cluster clients, Services, and in-cluster etcd pods. The etcd endpoints use Kubernetes service DNS names such as etcd-client-events.<namespace>.svc, not IP literals. The changed Go code contains no hardcoded IPv4 addresses, IPv4-only parsing, or public-internet requests. The added test plans select cluster-internal lifecycle tests only.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

No weak-crypto usage is introduced by this pull request. The changed Go files add no MD5, SHA-1, DES/3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom crypto, or non-constant-time secret/token comparisons. The new etcdctl helpers use existing TLS certificate, client certificate, and private-key paths only; no cipher or hash selection is added.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

No changed line introduces privileged: true, host PID/network/IPC settings, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation: true, or related security-context settings. The Dockerfile change only copies test-plan data. The added YAML files are test-plan definitions, not Kubernetes workload manifests. The Dockerfile's inherited user configuration is unchanged.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The previous sensitive-data finding remains unresolved. New test/e2e/v2/util/etcd_sharding.go sends internal https://<service>.<control-plane-namespace>.svc:2379 endpoints to RunCommandInPod (lines 195-202 and 228-235). That helper returns raw stderr in errors (test/e2e/v2/util/pod_exec.go:56-63). The new EtcdKeysWithPrefix and EtcdKeyCount functions then include raw command output in errors (lines 209, 242, 252, and 256). Their key results and the raw endpoint override values are also passed to Gomega assertions, which can print resource names and internal hostnames on failure.

Resolution

Use a dedicated etcd command path that captures stderr without exposing it in test output. Return only static or sanitized errors from command failures. Remove raw stdout and stderr from all EtcdKeysWithPrefix and EtcdKeyCount errors, including parse and missing-count errors. Avoid asserting on raw internal endpoint strings, or redact endpoints before returning values and before Gomega comparisons. Do not print unrestricted etcd keys or internal hostnames in failure messages.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The standing quality failure remains unresolved in the added Ginkgo suite. EtcdShardDeploymentTest still combines StatefulSet readiness, storage, Services, TLS Secrets, PDB, and ControlPlaneComponent checks in one It block (test/e2e/v2/tests/etcd_sharding_test.go:72-149). EtcdShardImmutabilityTest still performs five independent rejected mutations in one It block (lines 325-356). Suite setup still uses BeforeAll rather than the required per-test setup pattern (lines 56-64). Several cluster-operation assertions still lack diagnostic messages, for example lines 92, 164, 180, 182, 195, 199, 219, 223, 240, 246, 269, 275, 301-303, 365, and 417. The asynchronous Eventually calls are bounded, but that does not resolve the single-responsibility, setup, and assertion-message failures.

Resolution

Split deployment verification into focused It blocks or independently scoped cases, and split each immutability mutation into its own focused case. Use BeforeEach/AfterEach for per-test setup and cleanup. Add object- and operation-specific messages to every cluster-operation assertion, including direct Get, List, Delete, hosted-cluster lookup, and update calls. Preserve bounded timeouts for all waits and use bounded contexts for direct cluster operations that can block.

Document the HCPEtcdBackup limitation before shard configuration.

The API contract states that Tech Preview shard data is not included in HCPEtcdBackup. This guide configures a PersistentVolume-backed leases shard, but does not warn that resources routed to that shard are absent from the snapshot and cannot be recovered from it. Add a prominent Tech Preview warning before the configuration examples. Do not prescribe recovery steps unless the project defines a supported procedure for sharded data.

Add labels to every It block.

These seven It blocks have no explicit labels. Add suitable labels to each block so per-spec filtering and metadata follow the v2 E2E contract.

As per path instructions, “Apply labels to Describe and It blocks, using Context labels only for explicit filtering intent.”

Also applies to: 167-167, 183-183, 219-219, 242-242, 268-268, 347-347

Use the non-core lease prefix.

leases belongs to the coordination.k8s.io API group. EtcdResourceKeyPrefix("", "leases") therefore queries /kubernetes.io/leases/, but kube-apiserver stores these leases under /kubernetes.io/coordination.k8s.io/leases/. Both EtcdKeyCount calls use the incorrect prefix, so shardCount remains zero and the explicit shardCount > 0 assertion fails in the AWS and Azure sharding plans. Pass the API group at this call site:

leasePrefix := e2eutil.EtcdResourceKeyPrefix("coordination.k8s.io", "leases")

The e2e coverage seems pretty good for what I'd expect to test. I had a question about the testplans concept, as well as a few other comments.

and reject any key that appears more than once instead of allowing a later
assignment to replace the earlier one. Keep duplicate tracking scoped to each
flag value.
- Line 139: Add schema-equivalent validation to the shard parsing path before
resource generation or application: validate shard names as DNS1123 labels with
the 48-character limit, API groups as DNS subdomains, resource names as DNS
labels, and reject more than 20 resources. Update parseEtcdShard and
parseEtcdShardResources (and ensure RawCreateOptions.Validate invokes them);
accept syntactically valid groups and resources without a fixed allow-list.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject repeated shard fields.

If a user supplies resources=/events,resources=/pods, the second assignment replaces the first. Validation then succeeds, but the shard does not route events as requested. Track keys within each flag value and reject a key when it appears again.

Etcd sharding lets a HostedCluster route specific resource types to
dedicated etcd clusters, keeping high-churn kinds such as events and
leases out of the default etcd. The API already supports it via
spec.etcd.managed.shards, but there was no way to configure it from
the CLI.

Add a repeatable --etcd-shard flag that parses
"name=<shard>,resources=<apiGroup>/<resource>[;...]" along with
optional replicas, storage and storageClassName fields.

The parser mirrors the CRD schema so malformed input fails during
Validate, before any infrastructure is created, instead of surfacing
as an opaque admission error at apply time: shard names must be
DNS1123 labels of at most 48 characters, apiGroups must be DNS
subdomains, resource names must be DNS labels, and a shard may route
at most 20 resources. Duplicate keys within a single flag value and
resources claimed by more than one shard are rejected as well.

Add a how-to covering what etcd sharding is, which resource kinds are
worth routing to a dedicated shard, the --etcd-shard flag format, and
the constraints that make it a create-time only decision.

Two limitations are called out explicitly because they are easy to get
wrong: sharding requires the EtcdSharding management cluster feature
gate, and kube-apiserver only honours --etcd-servers-overrides for
built-in types, so entries for CRD-backed or aggregated API resources
are accepted but silently have no effect.

Also document the dedicated etcd sharding test plans in the v2 CI
pipeline reference, and regenerate the aggregated docs.

E2E tests should validate etcd sharding configuration and
deployment, correct resource routing across shards, and
cluster operations with sharding enabled.

Sharding can only be configured at creation time, so the coverage
needs its own cluster. Add an "etcd-sharded" variant on AWS and Azure
plus dedicated test plans that select it, keeping the regular platform
jobs from paying for an extra cluster.

The shards under test are deliberately varied so the specs exercise
more than one code path: events on EmptyDir, leases on a
PersistentVolume, and a single replica podtemplates shard that covers
the behaviours specific to running below three replicas, such as the
absence of a PodDisruptionBudget.

Extend test-e2ev2-unit to cover ./test/e2e/v2/cmd/... and
./test/e2e/v2/lifecycle. Those packages are entirely behind the e2ev2
build tag, so the plain `go test ./...` in `make test` skipped them and
their guards never ran. Running them revealed the new variant was
missing DestroyArgs on both platforms, which would have leaked cloud
infrastructure at teardown.

Also copy the test plans into the e2e image, which needs an explicit
COPY because they are data rather than compiled code.
