Gives etcd sharding two kinds of CI coverage on openshift/hypershift main: jobs that assert sharding still works, and jobs that measure what it costs.

The perf and scale team already answered whether sharding holds up under sustained load (Tech Preview results, July 2026). These jobs answer a different question — whether a change broke sharding today, and whether the numbers moved — which is what periodics are good at.

Refer: https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/CNTRLPLANE-4795

Note

Needs approval from two OWNERS groups. Everything under ci-operator/step-registry/hypershift/ and ci-operator/config/openshift/hypershift/ is HyperShift; the single file under ci-operator/step-registry/openshift-qe/ is perfscale-ocp-approvers.

Part 1 — functional regression jobs

Job Kind Schedule
periodic-ci-openshift-hypershift-main-e2e-aws-etcd-sharding periodic daily
periodic-ci-openshift-hypershift-main-e2e-azure-etcd-sharding periodic weekly
e2e-v2-aws-etcd-sharding presubmit opt-in
e2e-v2-azure-self-managed-etcd-sharding presubmit opt-in
e2e-v2-aws-backuprestore-etcd-sharding presubmit opt-in

Each creates one HA hosted cluster with an EmptyDir-backed events shard and a PersistentVolume-backed leases shard, and installs the HyperShift operator with --tech-preview-no-upgrade because EtcdSharding is a TechPreviewNoUpgrade management cluster feature gate.

The sharding test plans select only the etcd-sharded variant, which is absent from both platforms' default TestMatrix, so the regular AWS and Azure jobs do not pay for an extra cluster.

TEST_PLAN_FILE is added to the AWS and Azure v2 create-guests and run-tests steps. It points at a test plan shipping in the hypershift-tests image (/hypershift/testplans/<name>.yaml) instead of carrying plan YAML in this repo, so the plan stays versioned next to the variants it selects and is covered by TestShippedTestPlansAreValid. An inline TEST_PLAN written by hypershift-write-test-plan still takes precedence, so existing jobs are unaffected.

HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_SHARDS is added to hypershift-aws-create for the v1 backup/restore path. Shard values use ; to separate resources, and EXTRA_ARGS is word-split into the command array, so shards get their own quoted knob rather than riding along in EXTRA_ARGS.

The backup/restore job is presubmit-only for now: multi-shard backup is still open (openshift/hypershift#9146) and has no e2e coverage, so a nightly run would only produce noise. Its shard config covers both the skipped EmptyDir shard and the snapshotted PV shard. Give it a cron once that merges.

Part 2 — performance measurement chain

Job Variant Schedule
periodics-etcd-perf-annotation-churn-standard baseline weekly
periodics-etcd-perf-annotation-churn-sharded sharded weekly

hypershift-etcd-perf is a chain of three small steps rather than one script, so the only HyperShift-specific part is the plumbing:

Step Owner Does
hypershift-enable-user-workload-monitoring HyperShift (new) Turns on UWM on the management cluster
hypershift-hcp-metrics-endpoint HyperShift (new) Resolves the MC's Thanos, writes the kube-burner endpoint file
openshift-qe-etcd-density-annotation-churn perf and scale Runs the workload

A hosted cluster is split across two clusters: the load is applied to the guest API server, but the etcd being measured runs as pods in clusters-<name> on the management cluster. Two things follow — those pods are in a user namespace, so nothing scrapes their ServiceMonitors until UWM is on; and kube-burner's own Prometheus discovery finds the cluster in KUBECONFIG, which is the guest. Hence the two plumbing steps.

hypershift-hcp-metrics-endpoint also verifies etcd series are actually arriving before the workload starts, so a job cannot burn hours producing load and no measurement.

No metrics queries live in this repo. They are copied from metrics-profiles/ in cloud-bulldozer/e2e-benchmarking, at the same tag the openshift-qe steps resolve, with the hosted control plane namespace bound for self-managed HyperShift. Changes to what is measured belong in that repo.

openshift-qe-etcd-density-annotation-churn grows a self-managed HyperShift branch: when nested_kubeconfig and the endpoint file both exist it drives the guest and uses the endpoint, otherwise it behaves exactly as before. Both files are written only by this chain, so it is a no-op for the existing openshift/etcd consumers.

Comparison is two jobs on the same schedule running the same workload, one with HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_SHARDS set and one without.

Shard topology

Agreed with the perf and scale team: three PersistentVolume-backed main members, a three-member PersistentVolume-backed leases shard so cluster heartbeats get their own HA shard, and a single EmptyDir-backed events shard.

HYPERSHIFT_CP_AVAILABILITY_POLICY: HighlyAvailable # the three main members
HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_SHARDS: |-
  name=leases,resources=coordination.k8s.io/leases,replicas=3,storage=PersistentVolume
  name=events,resources=/events;events.k8s.io/events,replicas=1,storage=EmptyDir

Node count is 24 workers, matching the bed the characterisation ran on.

Review feedback

From Comment Resolution
CodeRabbit eval expands COMMAND[*] in the NodePool-skew path, so a ; in a shard value is read as shell syntax support_np_skew now runs "${COMMAND[@]}" as an argument array and pipes through yq
CodeRabbit promq has no --fail; a failed query is reported as "no etcd metrics" curl --fail, and a failed query, an empty result and a zero count are now reported distinctly
CodeRabbit Gates query a fixed [2h] window, not the run window Moot — the coarse latency and leader-change gates are gone; pass/fail is kube-burner's exit code, trend detection is Orion's job
@afcollins "Why did we inline the metrics profile instead of resolving from the source in the tool repo?" ~130-line heredoc deleted; profiles come from e2e-benchmarking
@afcollins "Creating an explicit metrics-endpoint should not be required." Still required, explained below; the file is now ~10 lines pointing at tool-repo profiles rather than carrying queries
@afcollins "Let's not obviously print credentials." No Elasticsearch credential handling remains in HyperShift-owned code at all
@afcollins "Maybe extract this to its own step." hypershift-enable-user-workload-monitoring, parameterised by kubeconfig so it works off HyperShift too

On the metrics endpoint: run.sh in e2e-benchmarking does have a hosted-control-plane mode, but its AWS path is ROSA-specific — it derives the HCP namespace from the api.openshift.com/name resource tag and expects an Observability Operator route on the management cluster. Neither holds on self-managed HyperShift. Its profiles are reused; its discovery is not. Giving run.sh a third branch is the real fix and belongs upstream.

Known gaps

Both are deliberate, and putting either back here would undo exactly what the review asked for.

  1. No per-shard breakdown yet. Upstream rosa/hosted-cp-metrics.yml aggregates etcd series without by (pod), so a sharded run currently reports its shards summed. Pod names carry the shard (etcd-0, etcd-events-0, etcd-leases-0), so it is a by (pod) away — in e2e-benchmarking, next to the rest of the queries. Until then the topology in effect is recorded in hostedcluster-etcd-spec.json and etcd-statefulsets.txt.
  2. No Elasticsearch indexing on the HCP path, so no Orion. run.sh passes either --metrics-endpoint or --es-server, never both, and the HCP series only exist on the endpoint. The same upstream branch unblocks this. Results are read from collected-metrics-<uuid>/ in the artifacts meanwhile.

Dependencies

Part 2 does not depend on either, so this PR can be split if Part 1 stays blocked.

Follow-ups

Workload variants are added one per pull request, per the review with the perf and scale team. The remaining etcd-density steps are already up:

  • #87728 — openshift-qe-etcd-density-crashloop-flood
  • #87729 — openshift-qe-etcd-density-event-storm
  • db-quota-pressure needs no new step; its chain variant lands once this merges.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The pull request changes CI YAML, step-registry shell/YAML, documentation, and generated job metadata. No changed file is Ginkgo test source, and searches of all changed files found no It(), Describe(), Context(), When(), or other Ginkgo title declarations. The UUID and node-name references are used for artifact and metrics collection, not test titles.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes YAML, shell, Markdown, and JSON files only. It adds no Go or Ginkgo test files, It blocks, or Ginkgo lifecycle and assertion calls. Therefore, the listed Ginkgo test-structure requirements are not applicable.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds CI configuration, step-registry YAML, and shell scripts only. The review-scoped diff adds no Go files and no Ginkgo constructs such as It(), Describe(), Context(), or When(). Therefore, the MicroShift compatibility check is not applicable.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds no Ginkgo e2e test code. The changed files contain no Go files, Ginkgo declarations, or Ginkgo imports. The changes add CI YAML, shell scripts, documentation, and metadata that invoke existing shipped test plans and kube-burner workloads. Therefore, the SNO multi-node test check is not applicable.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS. The review-scoped diff changes only CI configuration, generated Prow jobs, step metadata, and shell scripts. It does not modify deployment manifests, operator code, or controllers. The added content contains no required or preferred pod anti-affinity, topology spread constraints, node selectors/affinity, PDBs, tolerations, or replica scheduling logic. The etcd shard settings and HYPERSHIFT_CP_AVAILABILITY_POLICY select test-cluster behavior; they do not introduce topology-dependent scheduling constraints.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds YAML, JSON, Markdown, and shell CI step files. It adds no Go or other OTE binary source, and the changed files contain no main(), TestMain(), suite setup, Ginkgo, klog, or stdout logging code. The shell echo and printf calls are CI-step output, not OTE binary process stdout.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The PR additions contain no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage. They add no custom cryptographic implementation and do not compare secrets or tokens. The added metrics script uses standard bearer-token handling and TLS verification bypass settings, but those are outside the stated failure conditions.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

No changed container or Kubernetes manifest sets privileged: true, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation: true. The added capabilities: arm64 entries are Prow job scheduling capabilities, not Linux container capabilities. No changed file adds runAsUser or another explicit root execution setting.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The new hypershift-etcd-perf script logs the management cluster Thanos URL with echo "Thanos endpoint: ${THANOS_URL}". THANOS_URL contains the cluster-specific thanos-querier route hostname, which exposes an internal infrastructure hostname in CI logs. The script correctly keeps the Prometheus token and Elasticsearch credentials in a temporary endpoint file, but it must also avoid logging the route.

Resolution

Remove the full THANOS_URL from log output. Log only a generic message such as Thanos endpoint resolved or a fixed non-sensitive label. Review other configurable URL logging, including KUBE_BURNER_URL, and redact userinfo or avoid printing the full value before merging.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files. (6 skipped: 6 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The new hypershift-etcd-perf test step downloads kube-burner-ocp from a GitHub release by default. KUBE_BURNER_URL defaults to empty, and all four new periodic jobs use the step without overriding it. This requires public internet access and fails in disconnected CI. No hardcoded IPv4 assumption or new Ginkgo source was found.

Resolution

IPv6 and disconnected network compatibility notice: This test may contain IPv4 assumptions or external connectivity requirements that will fail in IPv6-only disconnected environments. Please verify your test works on IPv6 by running an additional CI job: For parallel tests: /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6 For serial tests (test name contains [Serial]): /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-serial-ovn-ipv6 Provide kube-burner-ocp through an internal image or mirror, or configure an approved internal KUBE_BURNER_URL. Do not download it from https://github.com/... in disconnected jobs.

Replaces the single hypershift-etcd-perf step with a three step chain, after
review feedback on openshift#86142 and the sharding review with the
performance and scale team.

The step carried its own copy of the kube-burner etcd-density metrics profile,
built its own metrics endpoint, and assembled an authenticated Elasticsearch
URL. None of that needed to be HyperShift's:

- The metrics queries now come from metrics-profiles/ in
cloud-bulldozer/e2e-benchmarking, at the tag the openshift-qe workload steps
resolve, so there is one copy of them owned by the team that owns the
  measurements.
- User workload monitoring is its own step. A hosted control plane is only one
of the things that needs it; any operator shipping a ServiceMonitor in a
namespace the monitoring stack does not own needs the same.
- The workload is openshift-qe-etcd-density-annotation-churn, used unmodified,
so the HCP numbers and the standalone OpenShift numbers come from the same
workload definition. That step grows a self-managed HyperShift branch, which
is a no-op anywhere the chain has not run.
- No Elasticsearch credentials are constructed in HyperShift-owned code.

Shard topology is the one agreed with the performance and scale team: three
PersistentVolume backed main members, a three member PersistentVolume backed
leases shard so cluster heartbeats get their own highly available shard, and a
single EmptyDir backed events shard. Node count matches the 24 worker bed the
characterisation ran on.

Workload variants are added one per pull request, starting with annotation
churn; crashloop-flood, db-quota-pressure and event-storm follow.

Also stops eval'ing the create command in the NodePool skew path. An
--etcd-shard value separates resources with ";", which eval would read as shell
syntax rather than as one argument.

@mehabhalodiya: This pull request references CNTRLPLANE-4795 which is a valid jira issue.

Details

In response to this:

Adds a functional regression gate for etcd sharding by resource kind. The perf&scale runs answered whether sharding holds up under sustained load; these jobs answer whether a change broke sharding today, which is what periodics are good at.

Refer: https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/CNTRLPLANE-4163

Step registry:

  • Add a TEST_PLAN_FILE parameter to the AWS and Azure v2 create-guests and run-tests steps. It points at a test plan that ships in the hypershift-tests image (/hypershift/testplans/<name>.yaml) instead of carrying plan YAML in this repo, so the plan stays versioned next to the variants it selects and is covered by TestShippedTestPlansAreValid. An inline TEST_PLAN written by hypershift-write-test-plan still takes precedence, so existing jobs are unaffected.

  • Add a HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_SHARDS parameter to hypershift-aws-create for the v1 backup/restore path. Shard values use ";" to separate resources, and EXTRA_ARGS is word-split into the command array and eval'd on the nodepool-skew path, so shards get their own quoted knob rather than riding along in EXTRA_ARGS.

Jobs on openshift/hypershift main:

  • periodic-ci-openshift-hypershift-main-e2e-aws-etcd-sharding, daily
  • periodic-ci-openshift-hypershift-main-e2e-azure-etcd-sharding, weekly
  • e2e-v2-aws-etcd-sharding, e2e-v2-azure-self-managed-etcd-sharding and e2e-v2-aws-backuprestore-etcd-sharding as opt-in presubmits

Each sharding job creates one HA hosted cluster with an EmptyDir-backed events shard and a PersistentVolume-backed leases shard, and installs the HyperShift operator with --tech-preview-no-upgrade because EtcdSharding is a TechPreviewNoUpgrade management cluster feature gate. The sharding test plans select only the etcd-sharded variant, which is absent from both platforms' default TestMatrix, so the regular AWS and Azure jobs do not pay for an extra cluster.

The backup/restore job is presubmit-only for now: multi-shard backup is still a draft (openshift/hypershift#9146) and has no e2e coverage yet, so a nightly run would only produce noise. Its shard config covers both the skipped EmptyDir shard and the snapshotted PV shard. Give it a cron once that merges.

This must merge after openshift/hypershift#9702, which ships the test plans in the image and adds the etcd-sharded cluster variant.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Adds HyperShift etcd-sharding regression jobs to OpenShift CI. The jobs cover AWS v2, Azure self-managed v2, and AWS backup/restore, with daily AWS and weekly Azure periodic runs. The jobs configure highly available hosted clusters with sharded events and leases.

Adds optional TEST_PLAN_FILE support to AWS and Azure guest-creation and v2 test steps. Where the scripts support inline plans, a plan in SHARED_DIR takes precedence. Adds HYPERSHIFT_ETCD_SHARDS support to hypershift-aws-create for the AWS backup/restore path.

Adds an etcd performance test step and four weekly AWS performance jobs for event-storm and database-quota-pressure workloads, with standard and sharded variants. The step collects hosted control-plane and etcd metrics, stores artifacts, and supports optional latency and leader-change gates.

@mehabhalodiya mind triggering a rehearsal on this? Want to see how steps tie in together and kick off the perf test.
