Adds openshift-qe-etcd-density-event-storm next to the annotation-churn and db-quota-pressure steps added in #84235, completing the set of kube-burner-ocp etcd-density variants the OpenShift Performance and Scale team used for the standard-vs-sharded etcd characterisation on HCP.
Companion to #87728 (crashloop-flood); the two are independent and can merge in either order.
A background job floods the cluster with synthetic Event objects while a concurrent victim workload runs against the same API server. What gets measured is the impact of the flood on ordinary cluster operations, not the flood itself — the victim workload is created into an already-flooded cluster, which is what --storm-delay is for.
This is the create-heavy counterpart to crashloop-flood, which drives comparable pressure through the PATCH path instead. In the characterisation, event-storm was the one variant where the standard offering occasionally failed outright and the sharded offering never did, so it is worth having both shapes.

The two EVENT_STORM_-prefixed names are the ones whose unprefixed form would collide with other kube-burner workloads co-scheduled in the same job, following the precedent set by ANNOTATION_CHURN_ITERATIONS and DB_QUOTA_ITERATIONS.
Defaults are kube-burner-ocp's own rather than the characterisation values, so a job config picks its own sizing. The characterisation values are recorded in the step documentation.
Consumers
None in this PR — the step is intentionally landed on its own. Its first consumer is the HyperShift hypershift-etcd-perf chain in #86142, which adds one etcd-density variant per pull request. A standalone-OpenShift periodic can be added later by perfscale, mirroring perfscale-etcd-annotation-churn-6nodes in openshift/etcd/openshift-etcd-release-5.0.yaml.
This PR adds an openshift-qe-etcd-density-event-storm step to the OpenShift QE performance-scale CI step registry. It runs the kube-burner-ocp etcd-density event-storm workload to characterize the effect of a synthetic Event creation flood on a concurrent victim workload.
The step exposes settings for victim iterations and pod replicas, Event iterations and replicas, storm workers, and storm delay. The documented characterization settings use 900 victim iterations, 2 replicas, and about 200,000 synthetic Events on a 24-worker cluster.
The command script supports version selection, Elasticsearch credentials and optional host configuration, workload metadata, optional local indexing, and copying collected metrics to CI artifacts. The step registers performance-scale approvers and reviewers and uses the existing OpenShift QE OWNERS file.
Adds openshift-qe-etcd-density-event-storm alongside the existing
annotation-churn and db-quota-pressure steps, completing the set of
etcd-density variants the OpenShift Performance and Scale team characterised
standard against sharded etcd with.

This change adds a CI step for running an etcd density workload alongside a synthetic event storm. The step defines workload settings and credentials. Its script selects a benchmark version, runs the workload, and handles the exit code and metrics.

When this step is used on HCP runs, the Elasticsearch username and password can end up in CI logs. The leak comes from the upstream wrapper's tracing, so it should be mitigated or accepted explicitly before the HyperShift chain starts using this step. Nothing consumes the step in this PR, so the exposure only begins once the planned HyperShift chain starts using it.

The pull request adds a shell command script, step metadata, YAML configuration, and an OWNERS symlink. The changed files contain no Ginkgo test declarations or test titles, dynamic or otherwise. The naming check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds a CI step, shell command script, metadata, and YAML. It does not add Ginkgo e2e tests or new test cases using It, Describe, Context, or When. The MicroShift test compatibility check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds a CI step definition, shell command script, metadata, and an OWNERS symlink. It adds no Ginkgo e2e tests or test bodies that could assume a multi-node or HA cluster. The SNO compatibility check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds a CI step wrapper, metadata, and configuration only. The changed files contain no pod affinity, topology spread, node selector/affinity, toleration, PDB, or scheduling logic. The replica values are workload flags, not scheduling constraints. Therefore, this check is not triggered.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
PASS: The pull request adds only a shell command script, YAML metadata, and an OWNERS link. The changed files contain no OTE binary, Go process-level code, Ginkgo suite setup, or openshift-tests entry point. The shell commands and delegated kube-burner wrapper are outside this check's stated scope.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds only a step-registry shell script, YAML, metadata, and an OWNERS symlink. It adds no Ginkgo test constructs or test files. Therefore, this check is not applicable. The shell script's external repository and Elasticsearch references do not constitute a newly added Ginkgo e2e test.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The pull request adds a shell wrapper and step metadata only. The added lines contain no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or non-constant-time secret comparison. The Elasticsearch credential handling only reads and exports credentials for the HTTPS URL.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The added step manifest contains no privileged: true, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation: true, or root security-context setting. The command script also contains no privilege configuration. The PR therefore introduces none of the listed container privilege conditions.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
No sensitive-data logging was introduced. The new script explicitly leaves shell tracing disabled, reads Elasticsearch username/password and the optional host with command substitution, and exports the authenticated ES_SERVER without printing it (commands.sh:5-18, 48). User metadata is redirected to a file rather than echoed to the log (lines 42-44). The only direct output commands are standard oc projects and oc version calls (lines 8-9), and the implementation matches the existing annotation-churn and db-quota-pressure scripts.

Keep Elasticsearch credentials out of wrapper traces on HCP runs.
The step passes a credential-bearing ES_SERVER URL to the upstream wrapper. On the HCP path, the wrapper enables shell tracing and then runs curl with that URL. The trace prints the expanded URL, so the Elasticsearch username and password appear in CI logs. Disabling tracing in this script does not prevent this. The child process enables tracing on its own.
The leak requires both MC_KUBECONFIG and ES_SERVER to be set. This step sets ES_SERVER when the credentials are present. Do not run this step for HCP until the wrapper stops tracing around the credential-bearing request. Track the fix in the upstream kube-burner-ocp-wrapper, or confirm that the pinned version does not trace this request.
I checked the default tag, v2.10.5. It has the same behavior. Other tags, selected through E2E_VERSION, were not checked.

Add etcd-density event-storm step
CNTRLPLANE-4795: Add etcd-density event-storm step
Oct 26, 2026
Adds openshift-qe-etcd-density-event-storm next to the annotation-churn and db-quota-pressure steps added in #84235, completing the set of kube-burner-ocp etcd-density variants the OpenShift Performance and Scale team used for the standard-vs-sharded etcd characterisation on HCP.
