CNTRLPLANE-4417: (feat)make kube-apiserver event-ttl configurable per hosted cluster - #9836
The kube-apiserver --event-ttl flag was hardcoded to 3 hours. At scale that fixed value leaves accumulated events consuming etcd storage with no way for customers or SRE teams to tune it, and hosted control planes have no kube-apiserver operator, so the standalone OpenShift eventTTLMinutes field never reaches a hosted cluster.
This PR adds eventTTLMinutes to KubeAPIServerOperatorSpec, exposing it as spec.operatorConfiguration.kubeAPIServer.eventTTLMinutes on both HostedCluster and HostedControlPlane, as specified in the HyperShift topology section of the event-ttl enhancement. It reuses the same name, units, range and default as the standalone field.
Validation is admission-time, via the CRD schema. The field is bounded to [5, 180] minutes with Minimum/Maximum markers, so an out-of-range value is rejected by the management cluster's API server and never reaches a controller. No operator-side validation and no ValidConfiguration condition handling is needed.
No new plumbing. The HyperShift Operator already copies spec.operatorConfiguration onto the HostedControlPlane; the Control Plane Operator renders the value as --event-ttl in resolveEventTTL.
No CRD-level default. The field is optional and omitting it means "no opinion" — the platform renders its own default. That default is now the literal 180m rather than the previous 3h. The two are semantically identical, but rendering the default in the same unit as the field means setting eventTTLMinutes: 180 explicitly produces a byte-identical kube-apiserver config instead of a spurious config change. Flipping the literal does change the rendered config once, which shows up as a kube-apiserver config-hash change; because the CPO ships in the OCP release payload, that only lands on a release upgrade, which already rolls the kube-apiserver.
Feature gating. The field is behind the new KubeAPIServerEventTTL gate, enabled in TechPreviewNoUpgrade only. Its parent kubeAPIServer field is gated on HCPUserFacingOperatorLogs, and a field gated solely on a different gate is pruned along with its parent in that gate's CRD variant — so kubeAPIServer is declared on both gates, keeping logLevel unchanged in Default while eventTTLMinutes appears only in TechPreviewNoUpgrade.
The field is day-2 mutable: a change rolls the kube-apiserver through the existing component config hash, with no cluster recreation. Hosted clusters that do not set it keep the 180 minute default, so upgrading to this version is a no-op for existing clusters.
KubeAPIServerOperatorSpec carries MinProperties=1. Reverting to the default by patching eventTTLMinutes: null therefore fails when the TTL is the only property set — the whole kubeAPIServer object has to be removed. This is covered in the docs and handled by the e2e cleanup.
The e2e test guards on the installed HostedCluster CRD schema rather than on a feature-set field: on a Default management cluster the API server silently prunes eventTTLMinutes, so without the guard the test would wait for a propagation that can never happen.
The e2e test is registered on the AWS public variant, which already runs with --feature-set=TechPreviewNoUpgrade.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an optional setting to configure how long kube-apiserver retains events, from 5 to 180 minutes. When unset, the platform default remains 180 minutes.
The setting is available through the KubeAPIServerEventTTL feature gate in TechPreviewNoUpgrade. Changes roll out kube-apiserver pods and apply to newly created events.
Documentation
Added guidance on configuring the setting, its limits and default, and how to verify it.
Pipeline controller notification
This repo is configured to use the pipeline controller. Second-stage tests will be triggered either automatically or after lgtm label is added, depending on the repository configuration. The pipeline controller will automatically detect which contexts are required and will utilize /test Prow commands to trigger the second stage.
For optional jobs, comment /test ? to see a list of all defined jobs. To trigger manually all jobs from second stage use /pipeline required command.
The kube-apiserver --event-ttl flag was hardcoded to 3h. At scale that fixeddefault leaves accumulated events consuming etcd storage with no way for customers or SRE teams to tune it. HyperShift has no KubeAPIServer operator, so the standalone OpenShift eventTTLMinutes field does not reach hosted clusters.
Add a hypershift.openshift.io/event-ttl-minutes annotation on the HostedCluster, as specified in the Hypershift topology section of the event-ttl enhancement, following the existing kube-apiserver-goaway-chance annotation pattern.
The HyperShift Operator validates that the value is an integer within 5-180 minutes and surfaces anything else on the ValidConfiguration condition, since CRD CEL rules cannot read metadata.annotations and admission-time validation is therefore unavailable for an annotation. It then mirrors the annotation onto the HostedControlPlane, where the Control Plane Operator renders it as --event-ttl. The operator is the gate; the CPO independently falls back to the 3h default for any value it cannot use, so a malformed annotation can never render a flag that fails kube-apiserver startup.
The range bounds live in the api module beside the annotation constant so both operators and external API consumers share one definition, without the HyperShift Operator taking a dependency on a control plane operator package.
The annotation is day-2 mutable: a change rolls the kube-apiserver through the existing component config hash, with no cluster recreation. Hosted clusters that do not set it keep the 3h default, so upgrading to this version is a no-op for existing clusters.

The change adds the feature-gated EventTTLMinutes setting to the HostedCluster API. The Control Plane Operator resolves the value, applies the 180-minute default when unset, and renders it as the kube-apiserver event-ttl argument. The change also adds feature-gate configuration, user documentation, and an end-to-end test for setting, verifying, and restoring the value.
The e2e lifecycle plan has a syntax error that stops the test package from building. This is a one-line fix: join the new label to the existing LabelFilter expression. The runtime change, which renders event-ttl from the new feature-gated field, shows no supported defect.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
PASS: The PR-added Ginkgo titles are static: When("the event TTL is configured on a running HostedCluster"), It("should render the configured value as the kube-apiserver --event-ttl flag"), and the static Describe title. They contain no pod, namespace, node, IP, timestamp, UUID, or generated identifier. They also contain none of the prohibited legacy metadata tokens. The numeric values in the suite metadata are fixed test inputs, not dynamic title content.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes kube-apiserver configuration, feature gates, CRD schema, tests, and documentation. The controller change only renders --event-ttl; it adds no replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDB settings. Changed kube-apiserver deployment fixtures contain only config-hash and desired-state-hash updates. No topology-dependent scheduling constraint is introduced.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The new Ginkgo test only reads and patches HostedCluster, CRD, and ConfigMap objects through the cluster management client. It contains no hardcoded IPv4 addresses, IPv4-only parsing, IP-based URL construction, public-host connections, image pulls, or external downloads. The Apache license URL is a comment only.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The PR adds event-TTL configuration and does not add MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or non-constant-time secret comparisons. The only added matching text is DES-CBC3-SHA in generated TLS schema content; the same cipher entry already exists in the base revision and the PR does not implement or enable it.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
No changed container or workload manifest introduces a flagged privilege setting. The changed source only adds event-TTL configuration and feature-gate schema. The added hostNetwork text appears inside generated CRD schema documentation, not a PodSpec. Existing serialized kube-apiserver fixtures retain their privilege-related values; semantic comparison shows their only change is apiServerArguments.event-ttl from 3h to 180m.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
No sensitive-data logging was introduced. The changed production code only renders the numeric eventTTLMinutes value. The new e2e test reports fixed resource names, TTL values, and validation diagnostics; it does not print ConfigMap contents, credentials, tokens, hostnames, or customer payloads.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The new Ginkgo test has several assertions without meaningful failure messages. Examples include setup errors at lines 143 and 146, cleanup and mutation patches at lines 161 and 179, Eventually inner assertions at lines 165 and 184, the initial read at line 174, and the status read and final Should(Succeed()) at lines 192 and 205. The test does use bounded Eventually calls and DeferCleanup, so those requirements are met. The new test is also blocking while the repository provides internal.InformingLabel for informing tests.
Resolution
Add context-specific messages to every bare Expect/g.Expect and every message-less Should(Succeed()), including setup, patch, read, polling, and cleanup failures. For the informing recommendation, add Label(internal.InformingLabel) to this new test or its Describe block before promoting it to blocking. If the ValidHostedClusterConfiguration check is retained as a separate behavior, move it to a separate It block.

Remove empty kubeAPIServer objects when reverting the TTL. Both merge patches remove eventTTLMinutes but retain its parent object. If the TTL was its only property, MinProperties=1 rejects the resulting empty object. The test cleanup fails and the documented revert does not work. (datatracker.ietf.org)

Use a feature-enabled cluster for this test.
When hosted-cluster-event-ttl is selected by a custom plan or direct Ginkgo invocation, the test patches eventTTLMinutes without checking the feature set. The field is available only with TechPreviewNoUpgrade; a Default cluster can reject or ignore the configuration, so the propagation wait can fail.
Run this test against a TechPreviewNoUpgrade cluster, or skip it when KubeAPIServerEventTTL is disabled.

The eventTTLMinutes field is gated behind KubeAPIServerEventTTL, available only in TechPreviewNoUpgrade. On a Default feature-set cluster, the CRD schema prunes the field — the merge patch silently drops eventTTLMinutes, and the Eventually waiting for propagation times out after 10 minutes with no useful signal.
Add a feature-set guard after fetching the HostedCluster:
In test/e2e/v2/tests/hosted_cluster_event_ttl_test.go BeforeEach (around line 93),
after GetHostedCluster and before the existing eventTTLMinutes skip, add a skip
when the HostedCluster feature set is not TechPreviewNoUpgrade. The eventTTLMinutes
field is pruned from the CRD schema on Default clusters, so the patch silently
drops the field and the Eventually times out after 10 minutes with no signal.

@sdminonne Thanks for the clarification. The guard should run before the existing TTL check and cleanup registration, so unsupported clusters skip before any patch.
[plan_code_changes]
Add configv1 "github.com/openshift/api/config/v1" to the imports.
Add the feature-set guard immediately after GetHostedCluster() succeeds.
Keep the existing propagation assertions and cleanup unchanged.

The kube-apiserver --event-ttl flag was hardcoded to 3h, so accumulated events
consume etcd storage at scale with no way for customers or SRE teams to tune it,
and hosted control planes have no kube-apiserver operator through which the
standalone eventTTLMinutes field could apply. Add eventTTLMinutes to
KubeAPIServerOperatorSpec, exposing it as
spec.operatorConfiguration.kubeAPIServer.eventTTLMinutes on both HostedCluster
and HostedControlPlane, as specified in the event-ttl enhancement. The CRD
schema bounds the value to 5-180 minutes so it is rejected at admission, and the
field carries no CRD default: when omitted the control plane operator renders the
existing 3h default. The HyperShift operator already copies spec.operatorConfiguration
onto the HostedControlPlane, so no new plumbing is needed. The field is day-2
mutable and rolls the kube-apiserver through the component config hash; hosted
clusters that omit it keep current behavior.
The field is gated on the new KubeAPIServerEventTTL feature gate, enabled in
TechPreviewNoUpgrade only. Its parent kubeAPIServer field is gated on
HCPUserFacingOperatorLogs, and a field gated solely on a different gate is pruned
along with its parent in that gate's CRD variant, so kubeAPIServer is declared on
both gates to keep logLevel unchanged in Default while eventTTLMinutes appears
only in TechPreviewNoUpgrade.

What this PR does / why we need it:
The kube-apiserver
--event-ttlflag was hardcoded to 3 hours. At scale that fixed value leaves accumulated events consuming etcd storage with no way for customers or SRE teams to tune it, and hosted control planes have no kube-apiserver operator, so the standalone OpenShifteventTTLMinutesfield never reaches a hosted cluster. This PR adds
eventTTLMinutestoKubeAPIServerOperatorSpec, exposing it asspec.operatorConfiguration.kubeAPIServer.eventTTLMinuteson both HostedCluster and HostedControlPlane, as specified in the HyperShift topology section of the event-ttl enhancement. It reuses the same name, units, range and default as the standalone field.Validation is admission-time, via the CRD schema. The field is bounded to
[5, 180]minutes withMinimum/Maximummarkers, so an out-of-range value is rejected by the management cluster's API server and never reaches a controller. No operator-side validation and noValidConfigurationcondition handling is needed. No new plumbing. The HyperShift Operator already copies
spec.operatorConfigurationonto the HostedControlPlane; the Control Plane Operator renders the value as--event-ttlinresolveEventTTL.No CRD-level default. The field is optional and omitting it means "no opinion" — the platform renders its own default. That default is now the literal
180mrather than the previous3h. The two are semantically identical, but rendering the default in the same unit as the field means settingeventTTLMinutes: 180explicitly produces a byte-identical kube-apiserver config instead of a spurious config change. Flipping the literal does change the rendered config once, which shows up as a kube-apiserver config-hash change; because the CPO ships in the OCP release payload, that only lands on a release upgrade, which already rolls the kube-apiserver.Feature gating. The field is behind the new
KubeAPIServerEventTTLgate, enabled inTechPreviewNoUpgradeonly. Its parentkubeAPIServerfield is gated onHCPUserFacingOperatorLogs, and a field gated solely on a different gate is pruned along with its parent in that gate's CRD variant — sokubeAPIServeris declared on both gates, keepinglogLevelunchanged in Default whileeventTTLMinutesappears only in TechPreviewNoUpgrade. The field is day-2 mutable: a change rolls the kube-apiserver through the existing component config hash, with no cluster recreation. Hosted clusters that do not set it keep the 180 minute default, so upgrading to this version is a no-op for existing clusters.

Special notes for your reviewer:
KubeAPIServerOperatorSpeccarriesMinProperties=1. Reverting to the default by patchingeventTTLMinutes: nulltherefore fails when the TTL is the only property set — the wholekubeAPIServerobject has to be removed. This is covered in the docs and handled by the e2e cleanup.eventTTLMinutes, so without the guard the test would wait for a propagation that can never happen.publicvariant, which already runs with--feature-set=TechPreviewNoUpgrade.Checklist:
