Storage, not a caller-side read-then-write, must arbitrate background response status transitions: two workers must not both claim a queued response, and a completing worker must not overwrite a cancellation.
Adds compare_and_swap_response_object, returning Applied / Mismatch / NotFound so a caller can tell a lost race from an absent record without a second read. The cancel endpoint (#45) needs that distinction to answer conflict versus not-found.
Comparison is on the stored form of the whole object, following compare_and_swap_conversation_messages. Two alternatives were rejected: a predicate on a status field inside the payload silently stops matching once compression.algorithm: zstd makes the column an opaque frame, and a dedicated status column needs a SCHEMA_VERSION bump, which fails closed with "database recreation required" because the store has no ALTER TABLE path.
Implemented for SQLite, PostgreSQL and the in-memory backend, with two cases added to the shared backend contract suite and a second SQLite contract run with zstd enabled.
The PostgreSQL contract test is #[ignore]d and needs a live database; it has not been run here.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Reliability
Response updates are now applied only when the stored response matches the expected version, helping prevent conflicting updates from overwriting newer results.
Updates remain scoped to the response owner, and missing or mismatched responses are reported without changing stored data.
These safeguards are supported across in-memory, SQLite, and PostgreSQL storage.
Background response lifecycle needs storage, not a caller-side
read-then-write, to arbitrate status transitions: two workers must not
both claim a queued response, and a completing worker must not overwrite
a cancellation.
Adds compare_and_swap_response_object, returning Applied, Mismatch or
NotFound so a caller can tell a lost race from an absent record without
a second read. Comparison is on the stored form of the whole object,
following compare_and_swap_conversation_messages, so it stays correct
when payload compression is enabled.
Covered by two cases in the shared backend contract suite and a second
SQLite contract run with zstd.

Every changed area traces to the response compare-and-swap primitive for #462. The changes are the trait method and the ResponseCasOutcome type in store/src/traits.rs and store/src/types.rs. They also include owner-scoped forwarding in store/src/registry.rs, the SQLite, PostgreSQL, and memory implementations, and re-exports in store/src/lib.rs, store-backends/src/lib.rs, and apis/src/store/mod.rs. Test doubles in apis/src/openai/conversations/tests.rs, apis/src/openai/responses/rehydrate/tests.rs, and apis/src/openai/responses/store/tests.rs only implement the new trait method. The shared contract tests, SQLite tests, and zstd codec-change test cover this primitive. The .gitignore entries for *.db-shm and *.db-wal cover artifacts from the file-backed SQLite tests. No queue, worker pool, cancel endpoint, store=false retention, or streaming event-storage code is added.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#462] Objective group: storage arbitrates response status transitions. Met at head: compare_and_swap_response_object in store/src/traits.rs is an owner-scoped conditional replace on the whole decoded object. SQLite uses BEGIN IMMEDIATE, PostgreSQL uses a transactional row lock, and the memory store uses its mutex. It returns Applied, Mismatch, or NotFound. NotFound covers both missing and wrong-owner records. Contract tests cover a second claim of a queued object (Mismatch), a terminal write over a superseded object (Mismatch), and cross-owner or missing records (NotFound, no write). File-backed SQLite tests cover exactly-one winner for competing claims and for cancel-versus-complete. Concurrent-claim, cancel-race, tenant, and not-found requirements are supported by this evidence.
Unmet requirement: the issue Scope lists the allowed transitions (queued -> in_progress, queued -> cancelled, in_progress -> completed | incomplete | failed | cancelled). Acceptance criterion 4 requires invalid transitions to leave the stored record unchanged. The primitive does not check the pair (stored status, requested status) against this graph. The trait documentation at head states only that the caller passes the expected whole object. No backend code or contract test validates status transitions. A caller that supplies a matching expected object can move a completed or cancelled record to another status, and storage does not reject it. No shared test covers an invalid transition.
PostgreSQL parity is not verified. The PostgreSQL contract test is #[ignore]d and was not run. Acceptance criterion 5 is therefore unconfirmed for PostgreSQL.
The changes since the previous review (per the raw summary) add encoding ordering, byte-comparison handling, and test additions. None adds transition validation, so the previous unmet requirement still holds.
Resolution
Enforce the allowed transition graph inside each backend's compare-and-swap. Read the stored status in the same transaction or lock that guards the write, and apply the update only when the (stored status, requested status) pair is allowed. For a disallowed pair, write nothing.
Add a result for a disallowed transition (a new ResponseCasOutcome variant or a distinct StoreError) and document it on the trait.
Add shared contract tests for disallowed pairs, including queued -> completed, cancelled -> completed, and completed -> in_progress. Each test must assert that the stored record is unchanged.
Run the PostgreSQL contract test against a live database and record the result in the PR.

Payload decoding detects the codec per row, so a record written before
compression was enabled still reads correctly afterwards. The conditional
write did not agree: it encoded the expected object with the codec in
force now and compared stored bytes, so every pre-existing record
reported a mismatch forever once zstd was turned on, stranding the
response in whatever state it held.
Compare the decoded object instead, reading, comparing and updating in
one transaction: BEGIN IMMEDIATE on SQLite, SELECT ... FOR UPDATE on
PostgreSQL. This also makes the SQL backends agree with the in-memory
one, which already compared decoded values.
Covered by a regression test that writes with compression off, reopens
the store with zstd, and asserts the swap still applies.

With `algorithm: none` the codec returns a borrow of the buffer just
serialized, so taking it by `into_owned` copied the whole response
object on every transition. Move the buffer already owned instead, and
let zstd keep handing back its own frame.
Also scope the recording test double's compare-and-swap to the owner,
matching the real backends: another principal's record now reports
not-found rather than being swapped.

Adversarial Review — feat(store): add atomic response-object CAS
Well-designed CAS primitive for the response store. Whole-object comparison avoids a SCHEMA_VERSION bump and works correctly across compression codecs. The contract test suite is thorough and the cross-codec test is a valuable addition. CI fully green (64/64).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
M1: SQLite CAS decodes stored bytes (potentially decompressing) for comparison. Every CAS operation pays the decompression cost even when comparison would fail on the first byte. For high-contention scenarios, comparing raw encoded bytes first (fast-reject) before decoded comparison could save CPU. The cross-codec test justifies the current approach.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
M2: PostgreSQL CAS uses SELECT FOR UPDATE, holding the row lock from SELECT through UPDATE and COMMIT. If encode_object or decode operations are slow (large objects under zstd), this could cause lock contention. The PR description explains the design tradeoff.
The contract suite drives compare-and-swap sequentially, and its SQLite
run uses an in-memory URL, which forces a single-connection pool. The
primitive that exists to arbitrate races was therefore never exercised
under one.
Adds two file-backed tests that give the tasks real connections: two
workers claiming the same queued response, and a cancellation racing a
worker's terminal write. Both assert exactly one transition applies, and
the second also asserts the record ends on one writer's value rather
than a blend.
Encoding now happens before the transaction opens rather than inside it,
so compressing a large object no longer runs while holding the row lock.
Signed-off-by: Charlie Doern <cdoern@redhat.com>
Thanks — addressed the first two, and pushed in 32a5f55.
Concurrency coverage. You were right that nothing raced. The contract suite drives CAS sequentially and its SQLite run uses sqlite::memory:, which pins the pool to one connection, so the primitive that exists to arbitrate races had never seen one. Added two file-backed tests: two workers claiming the same queued response, and a cancellation racing a worker's terminal write. Both assert exactly one transition applies, and the second also asserts the record ends on one writer's value rather than a blend.
Lock window (M2). Encoding now happens before the transaction opens rather than inside it, so compressing a large object no longer runs while holding the row lock. The tradeoff is a wasted encode when the comparison then fails, which is the rarer path.
On M1, the fast-reject suggestion, I don't think this makes sense. Comparing raw encoded bytes before the decoded comparison is only sound in the accept direction: equal bytes do imply equal values, but unequal bytes do not imply unequal values, because a record written under one codec and compared under another decodes to the same object from different bytes. Rejecting on a byte difference would reintroduce exactly the cross-codec bug this PR fixed, and the sound half of the optimisation saves the least work. Keeping the decoded comparison.

Correct the stale doc comment on the compression contract test.
The comment says the conditional write compares the stored form against a compressed frame. The implementation does not do this. Both SQL backends decode the stored payload and compare decoded JSON. The trait documentation says the same. The comment now describes the design that the PR replaced.
Reword the comment so it states the real reason for this run. With zstd, the replacement is written as a compressed frame and the stored value is decoded before comparison.
