What & why

Before: every Extract button in an archive window asked where to extract, even when the answer is always "next to the archive". Finder's Extract Here never asks.

Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "Extract next to the archive" (off by default). With it on, the window's Extract archive, Extract selected and the list's Extract… extract straight into the archive's own folder, without a dialog.

  • "Close the window afterwards", a checkbox under it, closes the window once the whole archive has been extracted next to it (never while it has unsaved changes).
  • If MacPacker isn't allowed into that folder yet, it asks for access once, as Extract Here does. If you say no, it asks where to extract, as before.
  • The result is selected in Finder when the extraction is done — if no Finder window is open. If one is open, MacPacker opens nothing more: Finder can only select something in an open window when it sits right in that window's folder, and otherwise opens a second window. The result simply appears in the window you have.
  • Shortcuts: File ▸ Extract archive (⌘E) and Extract selected (⌥⌘E). When the setting is off, the toolbar, the list's menu and these shortcuts all ask with the same folder dialog, now a sheet on the window.
  • Quick Look's Extract buttons follow the setting too. The Quick Look preview isn't allowed to write next to the archive, so it asks the app to do it, through MacPacker's url scheme, as the Finder extension does. If the app can't be reached, the preview asks where to extract.

Related: #322 extracts on double-click without opening a window. This keeps the window and drops the question, so the two can live side by side.

For review:

  • The new url action is extractNextToArchive: one archive, whole or only the entries named by their paths in it. It is accepted only when the target is the archive's own folder. It is separate from Finder's extractHere so that its result is selected the same way as the window's.
  • The setting is kept in the app group, like smartExtraction, so the preview can read it.
  • ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:) and extract(items:to:smart:) now return their task, whose value says how the extraction ended (@discardableResult, so existing callers don't change). ExtractedItems finds what an extraction added to its folder, leaving out hidden files such as a .DS_Store Finder writes meanwhile.
  • New strings (settingsExtractNextToArchive, settingsCloseWindowAfterExtraction and their hints) use the catalog's symbol keys, as since lang: convert Localizable.xcstrings to Swift symbols #270; the menu items reuse commonExtractArchive and commonExtractSelected.

Part of #350.

How it was verified

  • Tests: a finished whole or partial extraction reports .done, and one into a destination that can't be a folder reports .failed (ExtractionOutcomeTests); what an extraction added is found, also when it went over what was there, and a hidden file isn't taken for it; the setting is off until turned on; the new url action keeps commas, spaces and accents in entry paths, means the whole archive when it names no entries, and is refused for more than one archive (AppUrlTests).
  • CI, run locally: swift test --package-path Modules passes, all 660 tests; unsigned Release (MacPacker) and Release Store (MacPacker Store) builds, both universal, pass scripts/check-architectures.sh.
  • Tried in a Debug build: with the setting on, the toolbar buttons, the list's menu and ⌘E / ⌥⌘E extract next to the archive and select the result in Finder; the window closes when the checkbox says so; with the setting off they ask, in a sheet; Quick Look's two buttons hand the extraction to the app.

Screenshots — Settings ▸ General before / after ("Extract next to the archive" and "Close the window afterwards"); the File menu with Extract archive ⌘E and Extract selected ⌥⌘E.

The settings screenshots come from a build with all of these pull requests; this one adds only “Extract next to the archive” and “Close the window afterwards”.

Checklist

  • Verification evidence is included above
  • Changelog items written out above: 1.1.0 is released, so they wait for a new version block in Config/products/macpacker.json
  • AI involvement disclosed, if AI was the primary author — see AI_CONTRIBUTING.md

AI disclosure: I designed and tested this with Claude, which wrote the code from my directions.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an option to extract archives beside the source archive, with destination selection available as a fallback. This option also works when extracting from Quick Look.
    • Added archive menu shortcuts: ⌘E to extract an archive and ⌥⌘E to extract selected items.
    • Added an option to close the archive window after successful extraction beside the source archive, when there are no pending changes or item additions.
    • After extraction, MacPacker selects the extracted items in Finder and opens a Finder window if needed.

Before: every Extract button in an archive window asked where to
extract, even when the answer is always "next to the archive". Finder's
Extract Here never asks.

Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "Extract next to the archive"
(off by default). With it on, the window's Extract archive, Extract
selected and the list's Extract… extract straight into the archive's own
folder, without a dialog.

- "Close the window afterwards", a checkbox under it, closes the window
once the whole archive has been extracted next to it (never while it
  has unsaved changes).
- If MacPacker isn't allowed into that folder yet, it asks for access
once, as Extract Here does. If that is refused, it asks where to
  extract, as before.
- The result is selected in Finder when the extraction is done, if no
Finder window is open. If one is open, nothing more opens: Finder can
only select something in an open window when it sits right in that
window's folder, and otherwise opens a second window. The result
simply appears in the window that is there.
- File ▸ Extract archive (⌘E) and Extract selected (⌥⌘E). When the
setting is off, the toolbar, the list's menu and these shortcuts all
ask with the same folder dialog, now a sheet on the window.
- Quick Look's Extract buttons follow the setting too. The preview isn't
allowed to write next to the archive, so it asks the app to do it,
through MacPacker's url scheme, as the Finder extension does. If the
app can't be reached, the preview asks where to extract.

For review: the new url action is extractNextToArchive: one archive,
whole or only the entries named by their paths in it, accepted only when
the target is the archive's own folder. It is separate from Finder's
extractHere so that its result is selected the same way as the window's.
The setting is kept in the app group, like smartExtraction, for the
preview to read. ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:) and
extract(items:to:smart:) now return their task, whose value says how the
extraction ended (@discardableResult, so existing callers don't change).
ExtractedItems finds what an extraction added to its folder, leaving out
hidden files such as a .DS_Store Finder writes meanwhile.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds next-to-archive extraction for archive windows and Quick Look. It adds extraction preferences, menu shortcuts, app URL request handling, extraction outcome reporting, and Finder selection of extracted items.

Changes: Archive Extraction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extraction outcomes and result discovery
Modules/Sources/Core/AppStorageKeys.swift, Modules/Sources/Core/ArchiveState.swift, Modules/Sources/Core/Extraction/ExtractedItems.swift, Modules/Tests/CoreTests/ExtractionOutcomeTests.swift
Extraction tasks return completion outcomes. ExtractedItems discovers result paths and can select them in Finder. Preference keys define next-to-archive extraction and window closing. Tests cover outcomes, discovery, and the default setting.
Archive-window extraction flow
MacPacker/Core/ExtractionFollowUp.swift, MacPacker/Features/ArchiveContentViewer/*, MacPacker/Features/ArchiveWindow/ArchiveCommands.swift, MacPacker/Features/Settings/GeneralSettingsView.swift, MacPacker/Localizable.xcstrings, Config/products/macpacker.json
ExtractionFollowUp handles destination choice, extraction, Finder selection, and conditional window closing. Toolbar, context-menu, and File-menu actions use the coordinator. Settings and release notes describe the options and shortcuts.
Quick Look request construction
Modules/Sources/FinderMenu/AppUrl.swift, Modules/Tests/CoreTests/AppUrlTests.swift, Modules/Sources/ArchivePreviewUI/ContentViewController.swift, Modules/Package.swift, QuickLookExtension/Info.plist
The app URL supports the new action and optional selected-entry paths. Quick Look hands off eligible requests to the app and otherwise offers destination selection or performs extraction. Tests cover URL encoding, empty selections, and archive-count validation.
App URL extraction handling
MacPacker/AppDelegate.swift, MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlExtractNextToArchiveHandler.swift, MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlHandler.swift
The app dispatches the new URL action to a handler that validates the archive and destination, extracts all or selected entries, and selects nonempty results. Existing URL extraction returns results through ExtractionFollowUp.

Before: "Close the window afterwards" closed the window once an extraction
was done unless it had unsaved changes. Files dragged into the archive
while it ran, and still being read, didn't count yet as changes, so the
window could close and drop them. Separately, when an extraction went
over items that were already there, a hidden one such as .DS_Store could
still be picked for selecting in Finder.

Now:
- The window stays open while added files are still being read
(ArchiveState.isAddingItems), as it does with unsaved changes.
- Hidden names are left out of what is selected, in every case.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve nested paths during selected extraction.

extractSelectedAskingIfNeeded can send a selected docs/report.txt to ArchiveExtractor. moveExtractedItems uses only item.name, so it moves the file to destination/report.txt instead of destination/docs/report.txt. A root-level report.txt can also cause the move to fail. Use virtualPath and create its parent directory in the shared extractor. This placement issue is separate from Finder result discovery.

Before: the entries of an extractNextToArchive link are encoded twice.
One that survived the first decoding but not the second was silently
dropped. If that left no entries, the link meant "the whole archive", so
a garbled request extracted everything, and could then move the archive
to the Trash when that setting is on (sarensw#354).

Now: an entry that does not decode refuses the whole link
(AppUrl.ParseError.invalidItems). Any app can send these links, so
refusing is the safe answer.

empty list, or an empty entry in it, refuses the link
(AppUrl.ParseError.invalidItems), like an entry that doesn't decode.
Before: Cancel stops an extraction through the engine. If it came just
as the engine finished, or the engine never looked for it, the
extraction still ended as done. "Close the window afterwards", and Move
to Trash (sarensw#354), then acted as if the user hadn't cancelled.

Now: both extractions check for a cancel once the engine is through,
before they say they are done (Task.checkCancellation), and end as
cancelled when there was one. sarensw#339 checks the same before it puts the
result in place.

The test uses a stand-in engine that ignores Cancel and is released only
after the cancel, so the moment is controlled rather than left to timing.
Before: this pull request added its changelog items to the 1.1.0 block
of Config/products/macpacker.json. 1.1.0 was released on 19 October, so
that block takes no new items.

Now: macpacker.json is as on main. The full items are in the pull
request description, for a new version block, as AGENTS.md asks.

The items of sarensw#353, which this builds on, come out too, as they do in
sarensw#353.
