Closes #117.

Adds Aster.Elsa.Studio, an Elsa Studio 3.9 (Blazor) module that works over the Aster.AspNetCore endpoints.

What's in it

  • Pages:
    • definition list;
    • resource list, with search, a lifecycle filter and paging;
    • resource editor, with three tabs: Edit, Versions (view, activate, deactivate) and Referenced by.
  • Forms from the JSON Schema export (Export resource definitions as JSON Schema 2020-12 #106): each facet's x-aster-uiHint (Document a standard UI hint vocabulary #107) maps to one of Elsa Studio's own UI-hint editors through IUIHintService, as an unwrapped input. Facets without a usable hint fall back by type. A definition registered at runtime is editable with no code changes.
  • Reference picker: an aster-reference-picker UI-hint handler that searches the target definitions through POST /resources/query, using whichever operator the query capabilities declare. Referenced by runs a references filter query for each reference facet.
  • Diagnostics on fields:
  • HTTP only: the module references no Aster package.
  • Public API: AddAsterStudioModule, the three routable pages and ReferencePicker.

Deviations (recorded in docs/consumers/elsa-module-design.md and docs/ui-hints.md)

  • switch renders as a checkbox, because Elsa's switch-editor is the Switch activity's case editor, not a toggle.
  • number, secret, markdown and html have no dedicated Elsa editor, so they use the single-line or multi-line editor. secret is not masked.
  • The reverse lookup uses the query endpoint, because Aster.AspNetCore has no referrers endpoint.
  • There is no sample Studio host; the wiring is documented instead.

Tests

Aster.Elsa.Studio.Tests (bUnit, test-only): 85 tests per framework on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0. They cover:

  • the form model, built from a schema served by Aster.AspNetCore on TestServer for a definition registered at runtime;
  • hint mapping and fallbacks, with editor options read back by Elsa's own readers;
  • value conversion and diagnostic mapping;
  • the reference search requests;
  • the pages, rendered with bUnit.

Not covered:

  • a live browser test;
  • a run inside a real Elsa Studio host. The real editors need Monaco and MudBlazor's JavaScript, so the tests use a stand-in that writes values the way each real editor does.

… editors (#117)

An Elsa Studio 3.9 (Blazor) module over the Aster.AspNetCore endpoints:
definition list, resource lists, resource editors, version history with
channel activation, and a reference picker.

- Forms come from the JSON Schema export (#106). Each facet's
  x-aster-uiHint (#107) maps to one of Elsa Studio's own UI-hint editors
  through IUIHintService, as an unwrapped input, with a fallback per facet
  type. Reference facets use the module's aster-reference-picker handler.
- Server diagnostics land on fields by request-body path: save diagnostics
  by aspects.{aspectKey}.{facetId}, query diagnostics from
  POST /resources/query/validate (#194) by their path.
- The reference picker searches target definitions through
  POST /resources/query, picking contains or startsWith from the query
  capabilities; Referenced by uses the references filter.
- HTTP only: no package reference to Aster. Public surface is
  AddAsterStudioModule, the three routable pages and ReferencePicker.
- Tests: form model, hint mapping and fallbacks, value conversion,
  diagnostic mapping, the HTTP client against Aster.AspNetCore on
  TestServer, and the pages rendered with bUnit.
- Docs: package README, wiki Elsa Studio section, design doc deviations,
  verified Elsa Studio mapping in docs/ui-hints.md. CI packs the package.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cfa66

Overlapping requests can show the wrong resource version, search results, or status messages. These are recoverable, but the stale-result guards should be fixed before relying on the new Studio workflows.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to cfa66

The new interface generally preserves server-side authorization and version checks. However, navigation can temporarily pair a newly loaded resource identity with the previous resource’s editable data, allowing a save to affect the wrong resource. The affected scope remains bounded by the caller’s server-side permissions; deployment-specific identity and tenant configuration could not be verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new editor does not transition resource identity and editable form state atomically. During navigation to a resource requiring another schema, latest can already identify the destination while model and state still contain the previous resource’s data. Save remains available unless another condition disables it, and can submit those values using the destination’s current version. This can corrupt or copy data across resources accessible to the same principal. The outcome is inferred from asynchronous rendering and requires a save during the loading interval; it is not a demonstrated authorization bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently reachable scope is the resource data and activation channels permitted to the configured outbound identity within the server-resolved tenant. The module does not itself mint credentials or choose tenant authority. The navigation concern requires access to the source data and permission to mutate the affected target; broader tenant or service exposure was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A navigation followed by a save during destination-schema loading can combine the destination’s identity and current version with the preceding form’s values. If those values satisfy the destination schema and the principal is authorized, server checks need not reject the write. This is an ownership and data-integrity failure path, not evidence that an unauthenticated or unauthorized caller gains access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The editor route requires authorization, resource identifiers are escaped in HTTP paths, and mutations cross the existing API boundary. The server separately resolves tenant scope and authorizes creation, updates, and activation. UI authorization is therefore not a substitute for configuring API policies and resource-level authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Lifecycle changes can have post-commit workflow effects. Successful activation and deactivation hooks dispatch Elsa stimuli independently of caller cancellation, and dispatch failures are logged rather than rolling back the write. Repeated calls receive distinct operation IDs. These server-side semantics predate the module; UI repetition must not be assumed to provide exactly-once downstream behavior.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Publish resource identity, schema, version, and form state as one bound editing context. Make transitional forms non-actionable and reject mutations whose bound context no longer matches the current navigation generation.
  • proposed — Before deployment, verify the consuming host’s authentication handler, least-privilege API policies, resource authorizer, tenant mapping, and network transport together. Treat this as integration verification, not evidence of a vulnerability in the reviewed configuration.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #117 is the only direct linked issue and is open. Its coding requirements are: a definition list, resource lists and editors, version history with channel activation, schema-driven forms with UI-hint mapping and JSON-type fallbacks, a reference picker backed by reverse lookup and query endpoints (#108), runtime-defined resources editable without code changes, and server diagnostics mapped to fields. The whole-PR summary shows: the definition list page; the resource list and editor pages; version activation and deactivation; form modeling from the JSON Schema through AsterFormModel and AsterEditorMapping; the reference picker handler registered through IUIHintService; AsterDiagnosticMapper for field placement; and AsterQueries for reference search. Tests in AsterFormModelTests and AsterStudioPagesTests cover a definition registered at runtime, and AsterDiagnosticMapperTests and AsterStudioPagesTests cover diagnostic placement. The recorded deviations are: switch renders as a checkbox, number, secret, markdown and html use generic editors, and secret is not masked. The issue names UI-hint editors but does not require masking or a specific editor per hint, so these deviations do not fail a stated requirement. Reverse lookup uses POST /resources/query with a references filter because no referrers endpoint exists, as documented. The issue names reverse lookup endpoints, so this substitution is a dependency-level gap that the author documented. The commit summary reports navigation tokens that discard stale version loads. The test SlowVersionLoad_AfterNavigating_DoesNotReplaceTheNewResource covers that behavior. The changes since the previous review are not itemized in the supplied evidence. I preserved the earlier PASS conclusion and relied on the whole-PR summary. I did not inspect source hunks.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support the Aster.Elsa.Studio module described in #117. The package project, Studio source files, public API files, and test project implement the module. The test helpers (AsterTestServer, TestEditors) support the tests. The solution file, CI packaging step, and README entries register and document the new package. The docs and wiki pages record the design, the UI-hint mapping, and the deviations. The wiki Home and Elsa-Integration pages add navigation and an overview entry for the new module. These documentation changes support the same module and do not add unrelated product behavior. The summary shows no change to Aster.AspNetCore, Aster.Elsa, or other server behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

…t errors

- Numbers: the invariant attempt no longer accepts a group separator, so a
  de-DE "1,5" reads as 1.5 instead of 15.
- Dates: ISO text is read invariantly; picker text is read in the user's
  culture first, so en-GB "04/03/2026" stays 4 March.
- Referenced by: reads every page of each referrer query.
- A non-JSON success body becomes an AsterApiException instead of an
  unhandled JsonException.
- Version view, activation and referrer handlers also catch transport
  errors, which would otherwise end a Blazor Server circuit.

A slow version load for one resource could finish after the user opened
another and fill its form, so Save would send the first resource's content
under the second's identity and version. Each load now captures a
navigation token and drops its result when a later navigation happened.
The README also says to reach the endpoint over https.

@coderabbitai On the two retained concerns in your security architecture summary:

Stale loads after navigation (reliability): fixed in cfa666f. You're right. A slow ShowVersionAsync for resource A could finish after the user had opened B and fill B's form, and Save would then send A's content under B's id and version. Each load in the editor (initial load, reload and version view) now captures a navigation token, which OnParametersSetAsync bumps, and drops its result if a later navigation happened. SlowVersionLoad_AfterNavigating_DoesNotReplaceTheNewResource holds the version request at a gate, navigates, then releases it. Without the fix the form shows "Saw" instead of "Hammer"; with the fix it passes.

Plain http endpoints (transport): documented, not enforced. The module sends to whatever address the host configures, just as Elsa Studio does with its own backend URL; Elsa Studio accepts http too. Loopback and in-cluster deployments (Blazor Server calling http://elsa-server:8080 inside a cluster network) legitimately use plain http, so rejecting it would break real hosts without protecting anything the host doesn't already control. The README now has a Transport note: use an https address for any endpoint reached over a network you don't control, because resource content, writes and credentials go there. Authorization stays on the server.

Discard activation results after navigation.

ChangeActivationAsync awaits the activation request, then reads latest!.ResourceId again. Discard stale resource-list loads

The Search, Previous, and Next buttons and the Enter-key handler can start overlapping LoadAsync calls. LoadAsync awaits capabilities, validation, and the resource query without capturing the current search state or checking a request token. guard UI state updates with the captured current navigation value. Keep
exceptions handled by the existing catch blocks, and only assign loadError, call
ShowProblem, or call ShowTransportError when current == navigation; do not add
the navigation check to exception filters.
- Line 385: Invalidate the navigation token at the start of every load: move the
increment out of OnParametersSetAsync and increment navigation when capturing
current in ReloadAsync, and increment it likewise in ShowVersionAsync. Preserve
the existing token checks so stale historical or latest-version responses cannot
overwrite a newer selection.

- ResourceEditor: ReloadAsync and ShowVersionAsync take a fresh token, so a
  slow version view never replaces a later one; their error handlers only
  write when still current.
- Activation and referrer lookups drop their result once the editor shows
  another resource.
- ResourceList: LoadAsync takes a token and drops stale results and errors.
- Tests: version-view race and list navigation race (both fail without the fix).

Outside-diff findings from the cfa666f review, both fixed in 619f5d8:

  • ChangeActivationAsync captures the resource ID. After each await and in both catches, it writes only if the editor still shows that resource (IsShowing: the ResourceId parameter and latest both match). It does not take a load token on purpose: an activation doesn't replace the form, so it shouldn't cancel an in-flight version view. FindReferrersAsync had the same stale-write path (one resource's referrers landing on the next resource's tab) and uses the same guard.
  • ResourceList.LoadAsync takes a fresh load token. Results, searchHelp, validation diagnostics and errors are written only by the latest load. ResourceList_SlowLoad_AfterNavigating_DoesNotReplaceTheNewList gates the Supplier query, navigates to Product, then releases the gate. It fails without the fix and passes with it.

The Studio tests (92) pass on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0.

@sfmskywalker Thanks for the clarification.

  • Stale loads: Static inspection of the current head, 619f5d8, supports the fix. ReloadAsync and ShowVersionAsync increment the navigation token. ShowAsync checks the token before replacing the form. The regression tests cover navigation to another resource and overlapping version views. I did not execute the tests.
  • Transport: I withdraw the requirement to reject plain HTTP. Transport configuration belongs to the host under this deployment contract. The README now explains the HTTPS requirement for networks outside the host’s control and the exposure of resource content, writes, and credentials. Server-side authorization remains required.

These two concerns no longer require code changes based on this inspection.

Learning: In Aster.Elsa.Studio, plain HTTP support is intentional for loopback and host-controlled in-cluster deployments. Do not require AddAsterStudioModule to reject HTTP addresses. The host controls transport configuration. src/integrations/Aster.Elsa.Studio/README.md documents using HTTPS for endpoints reached over networks outside the host's control because requests carry resource content, writes, and host credentials. Tenant resolution and authorization remain server responsibilities.
