Self-review of #234 (Aster.Elsa.Studio, program #58). I reproduced each defect against the in-process Aster.AspNetCore server.

Changes

  • Resources saved through the typed C# API lost data on save (high).
    • Typed aspects have PascalCase facet IDs (Title), but their values are stored in camelCase (title).
    • The server falls back to the camelCase key; the form didn't. So these resources loaded with empty fields.
    • Saving then wrote "Title": null next to "title": "Hammer". The server prefers the exact key, so the stored values were effectively erased: a query on Price stopped matching, and required facets failed.
    • Fix: a field now reads its facet ID, or the camelCase key when the ID is absent, exactly as AspectFacetValueResolver does. It saves under the key it read and never writes a second spelling.
    • Other keys the aspect already holds are kept.
    • A camelCase key that is itself a declared facet (Name and name) stays that facet's.
  • An absent aspect became one full of nulls (medium).
    • The form sent every aspect. A resource without an optional Seo aspect, whose Slug facet is required, therefore couldn't be edited (400 facet-value-required).
    • Fix: a create now sends only the aspects that have a value.
  • Unrelated edits re-ran reference checks (medium).
    • The server validates references only in the aspects an update names. Because the form sent every aspect, a pin that had since broken blocked edits elsewhere (400 reference-pin-missing).
    • Fix: an update now sends only the aspects with a changed field.
  • Unchanged saves: saving an unchanged resource now says "No changes to save." and writes no version. Before, it created an identical version.
  • Empty creates are blocked: a new form with no value at all now shows "Enter at least one value before creating the resource." and sends nothing.
  • The README documents the save rules and the camelCase lookup.

Tests

  • New and updated tests. Each fails with its fix reverted:
    • ResourceSavedWithTypedAspect_LoadsAndSavesItsCamelCaseFacets
    • FacetsThatDifferOnlyInTheFirstLetter_KeepTheirOwnKeys
    • UpdatePayload_KeepsAnotherSpellingOfAKnownFacet
    • AbsentAspectWithRequiredFacet_StaysAbsentOnCreateAndUpdate
    • UpdateOfOneAspect_DoesNotRevalidateReferencesInAnother
    • UnchangedResource_SavesNoNewVersion
    • EmptyNewResource_IsNotCreated
    • UpdatePayload_KeepsFacetsTheFormDoesNotKnow (updated)
  • MissingRequiredFacet_MapsToItsField now enters a value first, so it still reaches the required-facet diagnostic.
  • Aster.Elsa.Studio.Tests: 99/99 on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0. The Release build has 0 warnings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Resource updates now save only changed fields while preserving unknown and differently cased fields.
    • New resources require at least one field value before creation.
    • Saving an unchanged resource reports “No changes to save” and does not create a new version.
    • Empty form sections are omitted from create and update requests.
    • Facet values are loaded and saved using the keys recognized by the server.
  • Documentation

    • Updated form documentation to describe selective updates, empty forms, facet key handling, and version-saving behavior.

- The form read each facet by its exact ID, but the server falls back to the
  camel-case key, which is how the typed C# API stores aspects. Such
  resources loaded empty, and saving wrote `Title: null` beside `title`,
  shadowing the stored values. The form now resolves the key as the server
  does and saves under the key it read, with one key per facet.
- Saving sent every aspect, turning an absent aspect into one of nulls (so
  a required facet in it failed) and re-validating references in untouched
  aspects. An update now sends only aspects with a changed field, a create
  only aspects with a value; an unchanged resource reports "No changes to
  save." instead of writing a version.

📝 Walkthrough

The Studio form now resolves declared or camel-case facet keys, tracks loaded values, preserves unknown facets, and emits only changed aspects. The resource editor validates empty creates and skips unchanged updates.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed write scope remains the aspects of the selected resource, subject to the existing HTTP authorization hook and resource-version precondition. No expanded cross-resource or cross-tenant authority was identified in this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Form-controlled values still cross the existing HTTP boundary before reaching resource persistence. Create and update handlers resolve the tenant and invoke authorization before the manager. Effective host-specific authorization configuration was not inspected.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Selective aspect submission does not weaken stale-writer protection: the editor sends its loaded version, and persistence rejects conflicting version insertion rather than silently overwriting another writer.

Preserve unknown alternate keys during aspect updates.

When a loaded aspect contains modeled Title and an unknown title key, changing a modeled field enters the changed-aspect branch. BuildAspects removes title before ResourceEditor sends the whole-aspect replacement. The resource manager replaces the complete aspect, so the unknown data is lost.

Preserve the cloned payload keys. The removal is not needed when other is not a modeled field.

Suggested fix
                 var payload = original[section.AspectKey] is JsonObject existing ? existing.DeepClone().AsObject() : [];
             foreach (var field in section.Fields)
             {
- // One key per facet: the one the value was read from, without the other spelling.
                 var key = storedKeys[field.Key];
-                var other = key == field.FacetId ? ToCamelCase(field.FacetId) : field.FacetId;
- if (other != key && Model.FindField(section.AspectKey, other) is null)
-                    payload.Remove(other);
                 payload[key] = values.GetValueOrDefault(field.Key)?.DeepClone();

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude untouched facet defaults from new-resource payloads.

The schema endpoint exports FacetMetadata.DefaultValue as JSON Schema default, and the Studio form loads that value into new-resource state. BuildAspects() then emits the default because the loaded value is null. The create guard checks only the aspect count, so the default can be persisted in a new resource version. This violates the metadata contract that defaults are never saved.

Track fields changed through SetEditorValue. For a new resource, omit untouched defaults from the payload while preserving them for form pre-population.

Outside-diff findings from review 5605947605:

  • Preserve unknown alternate keys (minor): fixed in 0a626b1, being pushed now. The form always writes a value back under the key it read it from, so it never creates a second spelling itself. Removing "the other spelling" could therefore only delete data that was already there. BuildAspects no longer removes any key. UpdatePayload_KeepsAnotherSpellingOfAKnownFacet fails without the change and passes with it. The Name/name collision test still passes, and so does the suite: 99/99 on net8/9/10.
  • Exclude untouched defaults from creates (minor): not changing. FacetMetadata.DefaultValue is documented as "metadata-only default for form pre-population; never injected into saved resource versions". That stops the server from injecting defaults into a version. It doesn't stop a user from submitting a form that was pre-filled for them, which is what pre-population is for. A default the user saw and saved is their input, as it is in any pre-filled form. Dropping untouched defaults would also make a pre-filled required field fail validation, even though the user saw it filled in.
