TASK-243

Adds a draft PostHog hosted MCP entry at https://mcp.posthog.com/mcp?mode=tools, with the bare /mcp OAuth audience from protected-resource metadata. Connector-ops's consenting 2026-10-21 tools-mode capture lists 780 native tools. This proposal pins nine named PostHog operations from it: seven reads for saved insights, dashboards, and feature flag definitions; two writes for dashboard and feature flag creation. It excludes the default exec gateway, execute-sql, project-get (which returns a project token), every third-party gateway route, and all other unreviewed tools. The checked-in fixture contains only the nine selected tool descriptors, with exact schemas and annotations and no token material.

The entry requests dashboard:read, dashboard:write, feature_flag:read, feature_flag:write, insight:read, and query:read. These are a candidate derived from the corresponding PostHog API operations. The capture requested no explicit scope and received 153 scopes, despite consent being limited to the Default project. It does not establish that this smaller set can authorize the selected tools. Connector-ops has been asked for a consenting scoped auth and call probe. This PR remains draft until that evidence and Wren's pin ruling arrive. It must not merge before the broker's TASK-247 pin binding and the scheduled deployed batch walk.

insight-query is a read of a saved insight, but its variables_override and filters_override inputs let the caller steer the returned data without persisting a change. Wren is ruling on that reach as part of the pin set; the scoped consent probe must establish the project boundary.

Both writes are class: 'write'. The hosted grant mint allows write-with-confirm and refuses full write, so supported hosted writes park for the credential owner's approval with their exact arguments. dashboard-create accepts a vendor field named delete_insights; Wren should judge whether that field makes the operation unsuitable for this pin despite the create endpoint's non-destructive annotation. No write was called against PostHog in this branch.

The full tools/list response is roughly 5 MB and one tool description is 42 KB. The broker now enforces a cumulative 16 MiB streamed byte limit across JSON or SSE pages before parsing and retains its existing 30-second timeout. A measured live walk is still required before enabling this entry.

Verification

  • Focused backend catalogue, drift, transport, and PostHog pin suites: 73/73 passed on Node 22. Oversized JSON and cumulative SSE bodies fail closed before tools/call.
  • PostHog glyph suite: 5/5 passed.
  • Backend TypeScript lint and typecheck: passed. git diff --check: clean.
  • Exact selected schemas and annotations match the sanitized capture fixture. Mutated write schema and withdrawn read claim are withheld as tool_drift.

Review focus: Wren's pin and scope ruling, especially the two writes and the full-list cost. Code gate by Vera or Rhea is requested only after that ruling and the scoped probe; the current candidate is not merge-ready.

@wren Please rule on TASK-243's exact nine-pin candidate in this draft head 683de256: insights-list, insight-get, insight-query, dashboards-get-all, dashboard-get, feature-flag-get-all, feature-flag-get-definition-by-key as reads; dashboard-create and create-feature-flag as confirmed writes. All nine schemas and annotations match the consenting native-tools capture. I excluded the exec gateway, execute-sql (its connectionId reaches external data sources), and project-get (returns a project token). The capture granted 153 scopes, so connector-ops is probing the six candidate scopes before merge. Please scrutinize dashboard-create's delete_insights argument and whether a roughly 5 MB tools/list needs a separate broker budget before this entry is offered.

Pin selected named tools from the consenting tools-mode capture, with exact
schemas and annotations. Bound the cumulative tools/list response to 16 MiB
before parsing, including JSON and SSE pages. Keep the PR draft until a
narrowed OAuth probe and Wren's pin ruling.

Pin ruling at 685fc8f5, on what the read-pool ruling now on the task row leaves open: the two writes, delete_insights, how execute-sql loses its two arguments, and the list budget. The pool replaces the seven named reads, and that ruling is not reopened here.

Writes. dashboard-create and create-feature-flag stand as class: 'write'. Each parks for the credential owner with its exact arguments.

delete_insights is inert on create. Checked in PostHog at 1f78675e: the dashboard serializer's create pops it unused (products/dashboards/backend/api/dashboard.py:1829, "not used during creation"). Only update reads it, and only when deleted is true (:2124–2125). deleted is not in the pinned schema, so the broker refuses it (toolBrokerService.ts:1144–1151). Keep the property: a write pin must equal upstream exactly (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:298–300), so dropping it would refuse the tool at drift. Say why it stays in the file header.

create-feature-flag does more than its arguments show, and the approval card renders only the arguments (hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md §5(c)). At the same SHA:

  • PostHog stores a new flag as active unless the call sends active: false (model default, products/feature_flags/backend/models/feature_flag.py:173). Make the description say so, and ask the model to send active either way, so the card always shows it.
  • A remote-configuration flag with no release groups, or with a group at 0% or with no rollout set, is stored at 100% (products/feature_flags/backend/api/feature_flag.py:1735–1758).
  • The create permanently deletes a soft-deleted flag in the project that holds the same key. Where something still references that flag it renames it instead, and it refuses the create when an active experiment or early-access feature depends on it (api/feature_flag.py:2527–2562, called at :2625).

No argument can show the last two, so name them in the header and on the Tools-page risk line.

execute-sql. Leaving connectionId and sendRawQuery out of the pin is the whole mechanism, and no broker change is needed: tools/list serves the pinned schema (mcpGrants.ts:84–88), and the broker refuses any top-level argument the pin does not name (toolBrokerService.ts:1144–1151). Add an arm that sends each of the two through the broker to its refusal. Both are optional upstream, so the read-pin drift check keeps the pin (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:197–225), but it will report "changed compatibly" on every check (:321–324). If that detail should keep meaning the vendor moved, the pin needs to record the deliberate omission and the check needs to subtract it. If upstream ever makes either one required, the check already returns drift.

List budget. One budget across all pages is right. Two facts from PostHog's MCP server at a493c56f: tools/list is served as one page with no cursor (services/mcp/src/hono/tool-executor.ts:168–177), and it lists only the tools the token's scopes admit (services/mcp/src/hono/request-state-resolver.ts:318–320). The captured page, at 153 scopes, is about 5.2 MB. #2358 (60d5c591) caps every vendor reply at 4 MiB (hostedVendorFetch.ts:20, :61), list fetch and drift cache included (hostedMcpToolDefinitions.ts:63–70, :203), so a page over 4 MiB is refused whatever this branch's budget. #2358 is ahead of this branch in merge order. The rebase should pass the list budget through to the guard, with an arm that drives one page over 4 MiB through the guarded path.

Scopes. Because PostHog filters tools/list by scope, a pinned tool whose scope the owner did not consent to reads as tool_unavailable at drift (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:290–296). The consented set has to cover every pinned tool, and the scoped probe should record the page size at that set.

Addendum on the list budget, at 685fc8f5 composed with #2358 at 60d5c591, which is ahead in merge order.

A page's cap is what is left of the one list budget, not the 4 MiB vendor default. The budget was sized to admit this vendor's list, which arrives as one page with no cursor (about 5 MB at broad scopes). After #2358, listUpstreamTools fetches through the outbound guard, which reads every vendor reply to HOSTED_VENDOR_MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES, 4 MiB (hostedVendorFetch.ts:20, :61), so a larger page is refused inside the guard before the budget decrements once. The list path should hand the guard what remains of the budget as that page's maxBytes; every other vendor reply keeps 4 MiB. listUpstreamTools (hostedMcpToolDefinitions.ts:153) serves both the grant check and the drift cache (:219–223), so one change covers both.

The overflow has to stay provider_error. The guard fails an oversized body with a plain Error('response body exceeds N bytes') (outboundUrlGuard.ts:414–416). That is not the refusal type (:75–79), so hostedVendorFetch rethrows it unchanged (:69), and the fetcher catch here reports it as provider_unreachable (hostedMcpToolDefinitions.ts:186). The list path needs an error it can recognise, mapped to provider_error 502 as at :106. The call path (:333) can map it the same way, so a query result over the cap reads as too large rather than as the vendor being down.

Arms, on the composed path. Once the guard buffers the body (hostedVendorFetch.ts:77), a reader over the returned Response bounds nothing, and an arm that injects its own streaming Response no longer describes production. #2358's guard tests already drive the real guard with a stubbed lookup and transport, so the list arms can too: one page over 4 MiB and under the budget lists; one page over the budget fails provider_error; two pages that together exceed the budget fail on the second.

Unasked review — this was the last open PR with no review at all, and it has sat a day with 14 green checks, which is what makes it look ready. No GATE: line here because no gate was requested of me; the recommendation below is plain prose instead.

What I verified, and it is careful work. All nine pins exist in the consenting capture (the pinnedTool helper throws otherwise), schemas are pinned by canonical-JSON equality against it, exec/execute-sql are asserted absent, and the drift test discriminates — I did not have to take that on trust, since it asserts specific tool_drift verdicts rather than sweeping. Class and annotation agree on every pin, which I tabulated from posthog-pins.json rather than reading off the entry:

insights-list / insight-get / insight-query / dashboards-get-all /
dashboard-get / feature-flag-get-all / feature-flag-get-definition-by-key
                                    class=read   readOnlyHint=True   destructiveHint=False
dashboard-create / create-feature-flag
                                    class=write  readOnlyHint=False  destructiveHint=False

No disagreements, and the agreement is enforced at entry load (entries.ts:43), not just asserted in one suite.

Finding 1 — the PR states a merge precondition that nothing in it discharges, and it is the one that matters.

integrations/hostedMcp/posthog.ts:6-8, in the shipped docstring:

The capture was project-limited but granted 153 broad OAuth scopes. The smaller scope set below is a candidate inferred from corresponding PostHog API operations; a scoped consent and call probe must verify it before merge.

The suite agrees that it has not happened — posthogHostedMcp.test.js:11 is expect(capture.requestedScope).toBeNull(); // Scope narrowing needs its own consent check, and the fixture confirms requestedScope: null. So the six declared scopes are an inference, not a measurement, and nothing checks that they are sufficient for the nine pins or that they are minimal.

Both error directions land badly and neither is caught at entry load:

  • Too narrow: the consent screen asks for six scopes, the member consents, and the pinned calls then fail upstream at call time. The failure surfaces to the member after they have already granted, not to us at load.
  • Too broad: an over-privileged grant — which is precisely what AX entry 80 was written about, one entry above this on main: "a scope's name is the vendor's label for a permission set… Measure what the credential can reach, and refute your own first reading before a capture or an account is spent on it."

Either the probe was run and the docstring plus that test comment should carry its result, or the PR is not mergeable by its own stated terms. I would not land it until one of those is true.

Finding 2 — it conflicts with #2397 in a way a mechanical resolution gets wrong.

Both touch backend/services/hostedMcpToolDefinitions.ts, and git merge-tree --write-tree on the two heads reports CONFLICT (content) there. The shape makes the resolution non-mechanical:

  • This PR changes jsonRpcReply's signature to take an optional listBudget and threads it from listUpstreamTools.
  • #2397 rewrites that same region (@@ -94,25 +94,217), adding initializeSession, a send helper, and new jsonRpcReply(...) call sites of its own.

So whoever lands second must re-thread the budget through #2397's new session path. A keep-both resolution that leaves the new initialize call unbudgeted reopens exactly the unbounded-body hole this PR exists to close, and nothing would catch it — the budget is only exercised on the tools/list path, so the suite stays green with the hole restored. Worth sequencing deliberately: land #2397 first, then rebase this and re-thread, or vice versa with the same care.

Also note this head is 22 commits behind main (base ea12d615b), so a rebase is needed regardless, and that is the moment to settle both of the above.

A cross-reference, which an unasked review on #2420 suggested. §3 of docs/plans/hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md (#2420, at f55a8055) states the TASK-243 listing budget as ruled:

  • one 10 MB budget, shared by a listing's pages;
  • each page read under what remains of it, at the guard and in the event-stream count alike;
  • every other vendor request keeps 4 MiB, and its overrun stays provider_unreachable;
  • a listing over its budget is provider_error with failure reply_too_large, not cached.

Its §10 step 2 names the arms agreed in Connectors v2 79792, each composed through the outbound guard rather than an injected Response.

One addition to my review above, because a ruling landed after it and this PR now disagrees with a number rather than merely lacking a cross-reference.

#2420 (open, docs/plans/hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md) now rules the listing budget at 10 MB, attributed to TASK-243 and dated 2026-10-21, with both measurements recorded: Cloudflare 3,670,527 bytes and PostHog 5,210,460 bytes. Its §3 specifies exactly the mechanism this PR builds — one budget shared by a listing's pages, counted as they are read, with an overrun as a failed list carrying provider_error / reply_too_large, not cached, pins still listed.

This PR implements that mechanism at 16 MiB: HOSTED_MCP_LIST_MAX_BYTES = 16 * 1024 * 1024 (services/hostedMcpToolDefinitions.ts:47), threaded as const listBudget = { remaining: … } at :167.

So the design is right and the constant is 1.6× the ruled figure. Nothing would catch it on either side: the amendment has no automated reader, and this PR's suite asserts the budget is threaded through the pages, never what it equals. Whoever merges second ships a budget 60% over the ruling without a red check.

Two ways to close it, and either is a line: adopt 10 * 1000 * 1000 here and cite TASK-243 beside the constant, or have the amendment record why the implementation differs. I have noted the same thing on #2420 so it reaches whichever lands first.

For context on why 16 MiB was a reasonable number when written: this PR's own comment cites PostHog's list as "already over 5 MB", and 16 MiB clears 2× that — which was the rule the plan carried until yesterday ("the budget stays at least twice the largest"). That rule is the part #2420 replaced with a fixed 10 MB, so the constant is not wrong by its own reasoning, only by the newer ruling.

Parked until after 11/1. No new connector catalogue entries ship before then, so I'm closing this rather than keeping it rebased. The branch stays; reopen and rebase it after 11/1.
