fix(tasks): single-line titles and single-token assignees on write (TASK-354) - #2483
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Task creation and update routes and the native task tool normalize titles and parse assignees. They reject empty normalized titles and invalid assignees. Tests cover these rules, and task-form placeholders now request an agent handle.
Changes: Task input normalization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared normalization and route validation backend/utils/taskFieldNormalization.ts, backend/routes/tasksApi.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/tasksApi.titleAssigneeNormalization.test.js, frontend/src/i18n/locales/*.json
Shared helpers collapse title whitespace and trim assignees without changing case. POST and PATCH apply these rules, map blank assignees to null, and reject invalid assignees or empty normalized titles with HTTP 400. Source-reference lookup checks normalized and raw titles. Tests cover accepted and rejected inputs. Both locale placeholders ask for an agent handle.
The native task tool normalizes titles and assignees, reports invalid assignees, and stores the parsed assignee. Tests cover handle assignment and display-name guidance.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2478: The proposal flow uses the POST source-reference lookup that this change updates.

Reject non-string PATCH titles before the update.
If a caller sends { "title": null }, this branch skips validation and Line 956 places null in $set. The PATCH route can therefore accept a blank title despite the new title rule. Apply the POST route’s string-type check to PATCH whenever title is present. As per coding guidelines, “Null/undefined handling at every boundary crossing. Type-safe doesn't mean runtime-safe when data comes from JSON/DB.”

raw.trim() is intentional: the tests and helper contract define assignees as trimmed, so outer newlines such as "Nova\n" are accepted. However, \u0085 remains after trimming and passes both current checks. Include the full C1 range:

backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:861-878 still calls Task.create directly with a merely trimmed title and raw args.assignee. A native agent can therefore store one\ntwo and two words without either normalization or a 400. Task has no schema guard for these fields. Apply the same contract to this service write path and test it; the fixed starter tasks in authController are already safe literals.
backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:98 collapses whitespace around newlines only. A B remains A B, and the new test at tasksApi.titleAssigneeNormalization.test.js:73 explicitly expects three internal spaces. TASK-354 requires internal whitespace to collapse to single spaces, so update the normalizer and assertion.
backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:108-109 misses C1 control characters. nova\u0085ops passes both the ASCII-only control check and JavaScript \s, so POST/PATCH store an assignee containing a control character instead of returning 400. I ran that exact predicate on Node. Cover the full control range and pin the case.
Caller contract: commonly_create_task still advertises an optional assignee “display name,” and the board accepts free text. Before enforcing one token at every path, align those callers with the required username token so previously valid multiword input does not fail without a clear explanation.

Reject non-string native task arguments before coercion.
The native tool schema declares title and assignee as strings, but parsed tool arguments are not runtime-validated. A truthy non-string value such as {} becomes "[object Object]", passes the normalizers, and can be persisted by Task.create instead of returning a structured invalid-input response. null is already handled safely; this affects non-string values that survive the current truthiness checks.

HOLD — backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:290 still describes commonly_create_task.assignee as “Optional assignee display name”. The new dispatch validation at :866 rejects multiword display names with invalid_assignee. A native agent following its offered tool schema can now fail to create a task. Change that schema description to require a single handle, and pin the offered contract in a test.
The focused route and native suites pass (52/52). Reverting POST title normalization makes two paired assertions fail; bypassing the POST assignee refusal makes three fail. CI is green at this head. I did not measure rendered layout.

Reject non-string PATCH assignees before parsing.
PATCH calls parseAssignee only for strings. A JSON array such as ["nova ops"] therefore bypasses validation and reaches Mongoose through $set. Mongoose casts it to the string "nova ops", which persists an invalid multi-token assignee. This is separate from control characters in string assignees.

Resolve instanceId assignees before task-completion dispatch.
The completion route passes the stored assignee to recordTaskCompleted. That consumer accepts only an agentName match. An instanceId such as default can fail the membership check and skip the system exchange. Resolve instanceId values in the consumer, or remove them from the advertised assignee contract.

Reject non-string task fields before coercion.
The tool schema advertises title and assignee as strings, but the model-call path only parses tc.function.arguments with JSON.parse and passes the result directly to dispatchTool. No runtime schema validation runs before dispatch. Wrong-shaped JSON values can therefore be coerced and stored in task fields.

In the commonly_create_task case, validate title and assignee before coercion:
reject non-null values that are not strings, while preserving the existing
handling of missing or null values. Then keep the existing title normalization
and parseAssignee flow for valid strings.
Add a native-dispatch test for blank assignees that asserts assignee: null reaches Task.create.
The native dispatch test file covers only a valid handle and a display-name rejection. The native dispatch path does not have a test for the blank-assignee case. In that case, the parser maps blank input to null, and dispatch passes that null to Task.create. The control-character and title normalization cases are already covered by the shared route tests or are covered by the prior published requests, so this comment requests only the blank-assignee case.
Add this case to backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.webFetch.test.js:
test('commonly_create_task stores a blank assignee as unassigned (TASK-354)',async()=>{mockTaskCreate.mockClear();mockTaskCreate.mockResolvedValue({taskId: 'N-2',toObject: ()=>({})});axios.post.mockResolvedValueOnce(toolCalls(call('c1','commonly_create_task',{title: 'Ship it',assignee: ' '}))).mockResolvedValueOnce(finalReply);awaitrunAgent(install(),mention());expect(mockTaskCreate).toHaveBeenCalledWith(expect.objectContaining({title: 'Ship it',assignee: null}));});

CodeRabbit threads on #2483, answered at head 53468e6:
backend/routes/tasksApi.ts multiline idempotency: fixed. The POST sourceRef lookup now matches the normalized title or the raw input, so a replay finds a row stored before collapsing. Test: "a replay looks up a row stored under the raw multiline title too".
backend/routes/tasksApi.ts PATCH title: null: fixed. A non-string PATCH title returns 400 before the write. Test: "a non-string title is refused before the write, so null never reaches Mongo".
backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts instanceId in schema: valid observation, not changed yet. recordTaskCompleted matches agentName only, so an instanceId assignee drops the completion event. Narrowing the schema to agentName would contradict the handle wording Lily asked for, so this waits on her ruling.
Request changes. The earlier title/assignee validation defects are fixed. One advertised assignee contract still has no matching completion consumer.
Important
P2 — backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:292 advertises “agentName or instanceId”, and backend/utils/taskFieldNormalization.ts:18 repeats that contract. The validator accepts an instanceId and native creation stores it unchanged. backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:736 forwards the stored assignee to recordTaskCompleted, whose membership predicate at backend/services/systemExchangeTriggers.ts:397 compares agentName only and returns at line 398 otherwise. This is CodeRabbit's discussion_r4359584606, independently verified. In real Mongo I installed analyst/nova as a bot member: parseAssignee('nova') succeeds, but completing with assignee 'nova' writes no task-completed system-exchange memory entry. Passing 'analyst' instead writes one entry to analyst/nova. The task can become done in both cases; the lost side effect is the completion memory entry, not the board transition itself. Align the advertised identity with what the consumer resolves: narrow the contract to supported agentName values, or resolve instanceId to the correct agent/instance tuple with a completion regression. The author's answer acknowledges the issue and awaits a ruling; an answer does not repair this functional mismatch.
Verified fixes
Shared title normalization collapses all whitespace, including internal runs, and the native tool uses it before creation.
Shared assignee validation rejects C0/DEL/C1 controls and inner whitespace; native creation uses it and preserves trimmed case.
POST sourceRef lookup includes normalized and original raw multiline title keys.
PATCH explicitly rejects non-string titles before any write.
All three CodeRabbit threads now have linked answers in issuecomment-6383525132. No HOLD is being filed for an unanswered thread. Fresh CodeRabbit and CI were still running; the stale-base guard is separately red and must be cleared before press.
Five temporary native dispatcher probes pass: title whitespace collapse, padded-case assignee, blank title refusal, and C1/C0 control refusals (three control cases). They supplement the two committed native cases.
A temporary real-Mongo service probe reproduces the instanceId/agentName completion discrepancy using actual models, recordTaskCompleted and appendSystemExchange. Clears CODE HOLD 5638050787 at 53468e6. Fetched and checked out this exact head in a detached worktree. The complete delta from that reviewed head is one tool-description line: commonly_create_task now directs the model to use agentName only and explicitly excludes instanceId from the supported assignee contract. That aligns the advertised input with recordTaskCompleted's agentName match. This selects the narrower supported contract; it does not add instanceId completion support.
The previous review's real-Mongo control already proved that the supported agentName reaches the correct installed instance's completion memory entry. All other reviewed code/tests remain unchanged: shared title/assignee validation, raw-title sourceRef replay lookup and the non-string PATCH title guard retain their fixes.

No current unanswered thread remains at this check. This code verdict does not clear the stale-base/CI checks or replace the required deployed UI check for the placeholder copy. A rebase that changes code needs its own exact-head verification.

Newlines in a title collapse to a space, and a title that is blank after that
is refused. Assignee is trimmed; an inner space or control character is refused
and case is kept. Applied to both create and PATCH.

Title: any run of whitespace, newlines included, collapses to one space, and a
title blank after that is refused. Assignee: one handle, trimmed, case kept;
an inner space or any C0, DEL or C1 control character gets a 400 that asks for
a handle. The rules live in utils/taskFieldNormalization and apply to the
tasks API (POST and PATCH) and the native runtime's create tool. The board's
assignee placeholder now asks for a handle.

The native tool's assignee description said display name, so an agent following
its own contract now hits the 400. It now asks for the handle (agentName or
instanceId, one token). Tests pin that a handle is stored and a multiword name
is refused before any row is written.

Main's PATCH now reads the current revision through findOne(...).select(...).lean()
before its CAS write. The title/assignee normalization test mock had no select on
findOne, so the title-only PATCH threw and returned 500 after the rebase.

… titles (TASK-354)
PATCH let a null title reach the $set; now a non-string title is a 400.
POST's sourceRef idempotency lookup also matches the raw input title, so a
replay of a row stored before normalization finds it instead of a twin.

…ee (TASK-354)
recordTaskCompleted matches agentName, so an instanceId assignee skipped the
completion memory entry. The schema now names the field the completion path
resolves on.

Assert the replay result, not only the lookup filter.
The default Task.findOne mock returns a query-shaped object without toObject. The route can therefore respond with 500 while this test passes. Mock an existing row with the raw multiline title, then assert that the response identifies that row and Task.create is not called. As per coding guidelines, “Tests cross module boundaries, not internal details.”

Prefer an exact raw-title match before a normalized-title match.
Existing rows can share a sourceRef while storing Fix\nboard and Fix board as distinct titles. For a replay of Fix\nboard, this unsorted $in lookup can return the Fix board row. The route then returns or reopens the wrong task. Check the raw title first, then fall back to the normalized title if no exact row exists. As per coding guidelines, “The change does what the PR title/description claims.”

Re-stamp after the rebase onto main 36244e5. Fetched and checked out the exact head in a detached worktree. The aggregate stable patch ID is unchanged from reviewed e35955d: 9788a5271f528121b0dfec98df039fec276ceef7. Six-commit range-diff preserves every edit; the only displayed difference is the surrounding dispatchTool declaration now being exported on main.
The previously verified fixes remain intact: title whitespace normalization, native and HTTP assignee validation including C1 controls, raw multiline-title sourceRef replay compatibility, explicit non-string PATCH title refusal, and the native schema's supported agentName-only contract. No new blocking code finding from the rebase.
backend: ./node_modules/.bin/eslint routes/tasksApi.ts services/nativeRuntimeService.ts utils/taskFieldNormalization.ts — zero errors, 33 warnings.
git diff --check — pass; checkout clean.
git range-diff bf0bd59..e35955d36244e5..HEAD, and git diff for each base/head pair piped to git patch-id --stable — matching patch ID above.
CodeRabbit's existing raw-title finding is resolved and the other two findings are outdated, with linked author answers retained. No current unanswered thread. The stale-base merge guard and coderabbit-threads status now pass. Fresh CI and the deployed placeholder check remain press conditions; this review does not assert they are complete.
…ay (TASK-354)
An $in lookup could return a 'Fix board' row for a replay of 'Fix\nboard'.
The raw title is now looked up first, then the normalized title.

Fixed the raw-title lookup thread at bce8244. The POST sourceRef lookup now tries the exact raw title first, then the normalized title, so a Fix board row cannot shadow a Fix\nboard row. The test asserts the first lookup is the raw title. Targeted suites pass 58/58. Sable's re-stamp is needed because this changes code.
Re-gated the sourceRef replay change against previously reviewed 7cd8270 in an exact detached checkout. The delta is confined to tasksApi.ts and its replay test. The route now queries the exact original title first, then the normalized title only when the original has no match. This prevents a historical normalized row from shadowing the raw multiline row under the same sourceRef. Existing done-row reopen semantics and the earlier title/assignee fixes remain intact.
Inserted the normalized row before the raw row: replay returns the raw pending task, does not create another row.
Raw row done plus normalized row pending: replay reopens the raw task and leaves the other row's updates untouched.
No raw row: replay finds the normalized task without creating a duplicate.
All three pass. Restoring only the prior 7cd8270 route made the first test fail by returning TASK-1 instead of TASK-2. Restoring this head returned all three to green. Temporary probes were removed; copies/logs remain under /tmp/sable-2483-*.
backend: npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/service/sable-raw-title-replay-probe.test.js — independent 3/3 pass; repeated without detectOpenHandles for old/new comparison as described above.
backend: ./node_modules/.bin/eslint routes/tasksApi.ts — zero errors, 20 warnings.
git diff --check and clean-checkout verification — pass after removing temporary probes.
CodeRabbit discussion_r4366966984 is linked in the author's fixed answer and outdated at this head. Earlier findings remain resolved/outdated. CodeRabbit, coderabbit-threads and stale-base checks report success. No blocking code finding. CI and the required deployed placeholder check remain operator press conditions.
