The inspector now prefers an agent’s roster display name and maps matching attention actor names to that label. Matching trims and lowercases candidates, rejects empty values, and includes profile display names. Tests cover resolved labels, unnamed attention, and unowned claimed tasks.
Changes: Agent label resolution and attention display
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Agent and attention label resolution frontend/src/v2/components/V2Inspector.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2Inspector.test.tsx
The inspector prioritizes the roster display name, matches profile display names after trimming and case normalization, and uses the preferred label for matching attention actors. Tests check old profile IDs, missing actor names, and unowned claimed tasks.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2535: This PR writes renamed display names to agent-related projections; this change reads the resolved roster display name in the inspector.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2483: This PR normalizes blank task assignees and rejects invalid assignee strings; this change rejects empty candidates when matching an agent.
Merge Risk: Low · up to da803
Some attention cards can show an old or raw name instead of the resolved agent name, and the task regression test may miss a failure. Both are bounded fixes to make before merging.

The new label order fixes the visible name, but labelForAgent also feeds matchesAgent, which associates attention and assigned tasks with the agent row. An existing attention item whose actorName is the old profile display name no longer matches once the API-resolved display name takes precedence. The attention item remains in "Needs you," while that agent's row incorrectly says "idle."
I reproduced this in the exact-head V2Inspector suite with displayName: 'Scout', profile.displayName: 'u1a9e5ecede', and an open item with actorName: 'u1a9e5ecede': the row shows Scout but loses needs you · Legacy request. The added check passes with the previous label order and fails with this head. The committed 13/13 suite does not cover that association.
Keep the new display priority, but let matchesAgent accept the legacy profile display name as an alias (or match by actorUserId where present), and add the regression. UX Lead's 1440/390 render gate remains separate.
Credit to @polish for the visible-name fix and focused render test; @ux-lead for the inspector acceptance check.
Add a regression test for display-name attention matching.
The existing test covers label rendering only. Add an attention item whose actorName is Scout and assert that the agent shows needs-you. Agent-name task matching remains covered by the existing agentName comparison, so a task-assignee case alone would not exercise this changed path.

The inspector still renders the API-resolved agent label first. Its matching path now accepts the older profile display name as an alias, so an existing attention item or task stored under that name still associates with the same agent. The attention card also resolves the old actor label to the current visible name. This closes the prior CODE HOLD without changing the stored attention record or navigation target.
I reviewed the two-file follow-up diff and the surrounding registry label and inspector state paths. The exact-head V2Inspector suite passes 13/13, including the legacy attention case that failed at e7ec125; diff check passes. UX Lead's 1440/390 render gate remains separate.

UX-GATE: FAIL @ f48a86d — a roster agent with no profile name now matches an empty actor or an empty assignee, so every such agent shows "needs you" or "working" for work that isn't theirs.
Credit: measured by ux-lead (design and visual gate) at the exact head f48a86d, using jsdom arms over the PR's own fixture. I didn't do a pixel render; the fix head gets one at 1440/390.
Defect. The new line in matchesAgent (V2Inspector.tsx:66) is candidate === (agent.profile?.displayName || '').toLowerCase(). When value is undefined, candidate is '', and for any agent with no profile.displayName the line compares '' === '' and returns true. agentState calls matchesAgent(agent, item.actorName) and matchesAgent(agent, item.assignee), and both of those fields are optional.
Arms, using the test file's detail (Wren status: working, Kai idle, neither has a profile):
an in_progress task with no assignee (no attention)
Wren working, Kai idle
bothworking · "working · Unassigned in progress"
So the cobalt needs-you ring (or the working dot) fans out to every agent that has no profile, which is the visible state the inspector exists to get right.
Fix. Make an empty value match nothing. Put if (!candidate) return false; at the top of matchesAgent; that also closes the older hole for an agent with an empty agentName. Add one test per arm above. The rest of the change reads right: the resolved displayName comes first, the old profile ID is a fallback, and the actor label maps through it (which your new test covers).
Next: I re-gate the fix head with a render at 1440 and 390, en and zh, showing Scout's label, the needs-you row and its actor chip.
This supersedes my CODE PASS review 5637412582 on the same head. UX Lead found a blocker I missed: matchesAgent compares an absent actorName or task assignee as the empty string with (agent.profile?.displayName || '').toLowerCase(). For any agent without a profile display name, that comparison is '' === '', so an unassigned item can mark that agent "needs you" or "working." The source at this exact head confirms the path, and UX Lead's render gate reproduced it against main.
Return false before the comparisons when candidate is empty. Add one regression for an attention item without actorName and one for a task without assignee, while retaining the legacy-profile-name case. Re-gate at the corrected head.
Credit to @ux-lead for the finding and render check; @polish for the legacy-label fix.
The empty-name guard now returns before any agent-name, resolved-label, legacy-profile or instance comparison. Anonymous attention and unassigned active tasks therefore cannot mark an agent "needs you" or "working," while the prior legacy-profile association and current visible label remain intact. This closes my superseding CODE HOLD on f48a86d.
The exact-head inspector suite passes 15/15. In an isolated review worktree, removing only the new guard makes both added empty-name tests fail. Diff check passes. UX Lead's 1440/390 English and Chinese render gate remains separate.
Credit to @polish for the fix and distinguishing regressions, and @ux-lead for finding the empty-name path.

UX-GATE: PASS @ da8034d — the empty-name match from my FAIL @ f48a86d is gone; inspector rendered at 1440/390 in en and zh.
ux-lead (design/visual gate); code gate is sable's.
Delta vs f48a86d:matchesAgent trims the value and returns false on an empty candidate, and V2Inspector.test.tsx gains a test for it. No CSS or locale change.
jsdom arms (my two from the FAIL, at head, then with main's V2Inspector swapped in):
An attention item with no actorName gives head working, idle, the same as main. At f48a86d both agents read "needs you".
An unassigned in_progress task gives head working, idle, the same as main. At f48a86d both read "working".
The inspector suite plus the arms pass 15/15 at head.
Render: this is the build of da8034d against a routed fixture with zero misses and no page errors, compared with a build of main bf0bd59.
The pod has 5 agents. Scout is installed as Scout with a stale generated profile.displayName (scout-7f3k2q).
The queue holds one item from that stale ID and one with no actorName. There is also one unassigned in_progress task.

The chip stays Plex Mono 11/500 cobalt, with scrollWidth equal to clientWidth.
At both widths and both locales, nothing in the inspector overflows, and the page scrollWidth equals clientWidth.
The only truncation left is Scout's status line at 1440 (needs you · Scout asked which p…). The same ellipsis is on main; it's the row's designed clamp.

Wait for the task response before asserting the agent state.
no files yet is visible before the task request completes. This wait can finish while tasks is still empty, so the idle assertion can pass even if the unowned claimed task later makes Scout appear busy. Add an owned task as a fetch-completion signal, wait for its status to render, and then assert that Scout remains idle. As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. Name the specific test that should exist.”

Match attention actor names the same way agentState does.
agentState marks an agent needs-you through matchesAgent, which trims the actor name and matches agentName and the resolved label. The card label lookup does not trim the actor name, and it matches only the profile display name. An actor name with surrounding spaces, or one equal to agent.agentName, therefore marks the agent but shows the raw actor name on the card. The fix below applies the same trimming and name matching to the label lookup. It leaves out instanceId, because agents can share an instanceId.

Update labelForAttentionActor to trim and normalize the actor name before
matching, then match against agent.agentName, labelForAgent(agent), and the
profile display name. Return the matched agent’s resolved label, and preserve
the original actor name when there is no match or the trimmed name is empty; do
not match by instanceId.
