TASK-530. Adds public /privacy and /terms pages (v2 tokens, inside .v2-root) so the Google OAuth consent screen and signup links resolve instead of 404.

Legal wording: Sam approved the open rulings through Cofounder. Cofounder read the Terms text and asked for one more read before the gate. Every factual claim on the Privacy page is cited below against origin/main.

Claim → source

Claim on the page Source (origin/main)
Uploads stored in our MongoDB database backend/services/objectStore/index.ts:18-26 (OBJECT_STORE_DRIVER defaults to mongo; only driver built), backend/services/objectStore/drivers/mongoDriver.ts:24-49 (MediaObject upsert, data: Buffer). GCS/S3 are in ADR-002 but not shipped, so the page does not name them.
Uploads have no expiry and users cannot delete them No DELETE route in backend/routes/uploads.ts (routes at :258, :272, :343, :445); nothing in the route layer calls driver.delete() (mongoDriver.ts:~49).
Password accounts store a bcrypt hash backend/models/User.ts:2 (bcryptjs import), :472 (bcrypt.hash(this.password, 10))
OAuth-created accounts have no password backend/controllers/oauthController.ts:340-352 (new User with authProviders, no password); password required only on the password path, backend/models/User.ts:46
Stored account fields backend/models/User.ts:74-174 (username, display name, email, password hash, authProviders for Google/GitHub, profile picture, role, billing identifiers, tokens, timezone, contacts)
Sign-in by password, Google, GitHub, or CLI device code backend/routes/auth.ts:226 (/register), :232-233 (OAuth callback/exchange), :236 (/login), :237-267 (/device/start, /device/poll, /device/authorize)
Session token kept in browser local storage under token frontend/src/components/Login.tsx:32 (localStorage.setItem('token', res.data.token)), frontend/src/context/AuthContext.tsx:75,184
Connector credentials encrypted with AES-256-GCM backend/services/connectorSecrets.ts:14 (ALGORITHM = 'aes-256-gcm'), :2-3 (cipher/decipher)
Chat messages deleted after 30 days, every plan backend/services/pgRetentionService.ts:47 (DEFAULT_RETENTION_DAYS = 30), :73 (PG_MESSAGE_RETENTION_DAYS override). No plan exemption, per Cofounder's ruling.
Retention can step down under storage pressure, floor of one day backend/services/pgRetentionService.ts:4-10 (doc), :49-51 (DEFAULT_USAGE_TARGET_PCT, DEFAULT_STEP_DAYS, FLOOR_DAYS = 1). Published per Sam's ruling.
Hosting on Google Cloud / GKE docs/deployment/KUBERNETES.md (GKE cluster); docs/adr/ADR-015-spot-pool-for-stateless-workloads.md
Traffic proxied through Cloudflare backend/server.ts:92-94 (trust-proxy comment: Cloudflare → ingress → backend)
Email via SMTP2GO backend/services/emailService.ts:44 (SMTP2GO_BASE_URL, default api.smtp2go.com/v3)
Sentry; personal data not sent by default backend/instrument.ts:9 (dsn), :10 (sendDefaultPii: false), :11 (tracesSampleRate: 0)
DeepSeek is the default model for hosted agents backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:98 (DEFAULT_MODEL = LITELLM_CHAT_MODEL || 'deepseek-v4-flash'); k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml:35-38 (deepseek-v4-flash → deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash)
Cloudflare Workers AI is the fallback k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml:68 (fallback comment), :97 (cloudflare/@cf/meta/llama-3.1-8b-instruct-fp8)
Hosted-agent messages and context go to the model provider backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:15 (loops LiteLLM chat/completions with Commonly tools), :1480 (recent pod messages fed to the run, PG first, Mongo fallback)
OpenRouter serves hosted routes external/litellm/config.yaml:39-46 (openrouter/nvidia/nemotron-…:free). nativeRuntimeService.ts:93-95 says the OpenRouter key expired 2026-09-03; Cofounder confirmed OpenRouter still serves hosted routes.
Gemini and OpenAI not listed as hosted processors Gemini routes are in external/litellm/config.yaml:14-30 (dead per Cofounder). OpenAI routes (gpt-5.4, openai/gpt-4o) serve only internal dev agents.
BYO agents run on the user's machine; we do not process their model calls Cofounder ruling. Not independently verified in code.
Ref visit record: the code and the UTC day, no person, address or user agent frontend/src/v2/utils/firstTouch.ts:12 (commonly.firstTouchRef key), :28-29 (stored once in local storage, then sent); backend/routes/attribution.ts:2-4 (POST /attribution/visit, counted per UTC day), :54 (route); backend/models/AttributionVisit.ts:3-6 ("Only the count: no person, no address, no user agent").
A signup through a ref link saves the code on the account backend/models/User.ts:218 (signupRef, set once), backend/controllers/authController.ts:22
No third-party analytics script Grep of frontend/public/index.html (only a popstate script, :9-18) and frontend/src for gtag, googletagmanager, plausible, posthog, mixpanel finds none. Not verified at the edge: Cloudflare can inject its own beacon at zone level, outside the repo. SRE to confirm in the Cloudflare dashboard before the gate. The page does not name Cloudflare Web Analytics.
Users cannot delete their own account; only an admin can No self-serve delete route in backend/routes/auth.ts; only DELETE /api/admin/users/:userId (backend/routes/admin/users.ts:286). That endpoint does not delete uploads (Cofounder's reading; not re-verified).
Agent memory: owners/admins read and edit sections; agent uses its runtime token; no route deletes a whole memory backend/routes/agentMemoryView.ts:7-10 (access: admin or owner, else 403), :114-130 (auth + owner/admin check), :135 (GET …/editable), :155 (PATCH …/editable/:section); backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts:2767 (GET /memory), :2810 (PUT /memory). git grep finds no AgentMemory delete call in backend/.
Deletion by email; uploads not deletable in the app Sam's ruling, via Cofounder: "To delete your account and your uploads, email support@commonly.me." No timeframe. Code: no user-facing delete route (see upload row).
Terms text Cofounder's verbatim text. Facts in it (age 16, 12-month liability cap, beta) are approved wording and are not verified in code.
Contact addresses privacy@commonly.me (privacy page), support@commonly.me (terms and account-deletion requests). Both confirmed by Sam via Cofounder; SRE confirming test mail.

Open before ship

  • SRE: confirm no Cloudflare Web Analytics or other beacon is injected at the zone (see analytics row).
  • Cofounder: final read of the Terms text.

Verification

  • Unit tests pass locally (frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2LegalPage.test.tsx, 3/3): sections, mailto links, home link, no draft note.
  • Scroll fix verified at 390: .v2-legal scrolls (scrollHeight 1622, clientHeight 844), and the privacy@ mailto link sits inside the viewport at the bottom.
  • Rendered at 390 and 1440 with Playwright on the v2 root, no console errors. The screenshots are local, not committed: .playwright-mcp/task530-{privacy,terms}-{390,1440}-v2.png , re-shot at 2560c42 (after the Privacy additions and the title margin).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Adds /privacy and /terms as v2 pages so the Google OAuth consent screen
and signup links stop returning 404. Draft text is drawn only from code
behaviour; bracketed items stay open until Sam approves the wording.

Walkthrough

The frontend adds draft Privacy and Terms pages. It maps /privacy and /terms to those pages and adds legal-page styling and render tests.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 8bb4f

The public Privacy page overstates chat-message deletion by omitting protected pods and by presenting the configurable 30-day default as universal, so correct that wording before it ships. Account and upload deletion requests now point to support@commonly.me, but confirm the mailbox and the support-side deletion workflow work before the page is linked from OAuth consent. The route mappings have no test coverage. Terms sections remain draft.

Explanation

The title "feat(legal): public Privacy and Terms pages (TASK-530)" matches the main change. The PR adds public /privacy and /terms pages, routes them in App.tsx, and includes the legal page component, its tests, and styling. The conventional-commit prefix and ticket ID are acceptable and do not hide the main point.

Make the legal-page color tokens available outside .v2-root.

The public routes render .v2-legal without a .v2-root ancestor. The color tokens on this line are declared only inside .v2-root, so these declarations are invalid on the legal pages. The page therefore does not get its specified background or text colors; the other legal-page color rules have the same problem. Give the public page its own inherited token scope without applying .v2-root’s viewport and overflow rules. As per path instructions, “Colors, radii and type come from var(--v2-*) tokens.”

Add route-level tests for /privacy and /terms.

The legal-page tests render the components directly, so they pass if either route is removed or mapped incorrectly. Add an App routing test that starts at each path and asserts the corresponding document renders.

Test the public routes, not only the page components.

These tests directly render V2PrivacyPage and V2TermsPage. They stay green if App.tsx stops resolving /privacy or /terms. Add a route-level test that renders the application or router at both paths and asserts the expected page heading.

As per path instructions, tests for a public UI change must exercise the changed public behavior.

Resolve the bracketed legal placeholders before this page ships.

The public Privacy and Terms copy still contains unresolved placeholders. Lines 24, 33–34, 43, 51–52, and 61–79 ask for confirmation of agent-memory access, upload retention, the chat retention floor, OpenRouter routing, the admin deletion process, the contact address, and the Terms content. The file header says these items "must be filled or confirmed before this ships." The route is linked from Google OAuth consent and signup, so users would see unconfirmed statements about stored data and deletion.

The retention tests support part of the retention copy. They expect a 30-day default and a one-day floor with a warning when retention stays above target. They do not establish that the 30-day window applies to every plan, and the inspected sources do not establish upload expiry behavior. Before merge, confirm each of these statements against the implementation, or rewrite it to state only what is verified.

Qualify the retention statement for protected pods.

Message.deleteOlderThan excludes configured and supplied protected pod IDs. The public statement that chat messages are deleted after 30 days therefore overstates the deletion scope. State the exemption, and state that 30 days is the default if deployment configuration can change it.

UX visual pass at 8bb4fa7. I rendered a prod build of /privacy and /terms at 390 and 1440.

Blocker: the pages don't scroll. The background fix put the page inside .v2-root, and .v2-root brings height: 100vh; overflow: hidden. The <main class="v2-root v2-legal"> is pinned to the viewport and clips its article. At 390 the Privacy article is 1464px tall in an 844px box. Wheel and End do nothing, scrollY stays 0, and the last ~620px can't be reached. That covers everything below "How long we keep data", including the privacy@ contact line. At 1440 it's 1056 in 900, so the contact line is cut off there too. Terms has the same problem.

Fix: mirror the landing's inner scroller.

.v2-root.v2-legal { display: block; height: 100vh; overflow-y: auto; overflow-x: hidden; }

Also update the comment above .v2-legal. It says the pages sit outside .v2-root, and they no longer do.

Two more, both small:

  • The h1 inherits a 20px line-height at 32px. It fits on one line today, but a title that wraps (or a zh one) will overprint. Add line-height: 1.2 on .v2-legal__title.
  • There's no link anywhere on the page: no way back to commonly.me, and privacy@commonly.me / support@commonly.me are plain text. A consent-screen visitor lands on a dead end. A small brand link home at the top and mailto: on the addresses would fix it.

The palette, the 680px measure and the 15px/1.6 body are good. Terms still has "[Describe the service as it is offered.]", which is in Cofounder's wording read, not this gate.

GATE: HOLD

.v2-root sets height:100vh and overflow:hidden, so the bottom of the
legal pages was unreachable on mobile. The pages now override both, as the
landing does. Adds a home link, mailto links for the addresses, and a
1.2 title line-height.

UX re-gate at bb53bff. I rendered a prod build of /privacy and /terms at 390 and 1440 and scroll-tested both with the mouse wheel.

The blocker is fixed. .v2-legal scrolls: Privacy is 1622/844 at 390 and 1214/900 at 1440. After a full wheel scroll, the privacy@ line sits at 744–768 at 390 and 800–824 at 1440, inside the viewport, with no horizontal overflow. Terms fits at 1440 and scrolls 34px at 390. The title line-height is 38.4px. The home link and all three mailto: links are present.

Non-blocking: the mailto links and the "Commonly" home link look exactly like body text, with no underline and no colour change, so a reader can't tell they're links. Add .v2-legal a { text-decoration: underline; text-underline-offset: 2px; } (keeping the home link's own style if you prefer). Doing it here is cheap. A follow-up is fine too.

The Terms brackets are in the Cofounder's wording read, not this gate.

UX re-stamp at b7b87a8. The delta since bb53bff is one CSS rule underlining .v2-legal__section a, so the mailto links now read as links. Nothing else changed, and the PASS at bb53bff carries.

UX gate at 7588aab, after the Cofounder's wording pass. I rebuilt /privacy and /terms and scroll-tested them at 390 and 1440.

Both pages still scroll and reach their last line. Privacy is now 1930/844 at 390 with the new Analytics section, and the privacy@ line lands at 744–768 after a full scroll. Terms scrolls 246px at 390 and fits at 1440. There's no horizontal overflow, and the home link and mailto links are still there. The Terms brackets are gone.

Non-blocking: removing the draft note also removed its 32px bottom margin, so the 32px title now sits 8px above the first section heading (measured), while sections are 28px apart. The title reads as part of "What we store". Fix: .v2-legal__title { margin: 0 0 32px; }.

UX re-stamp at 2560c42. The only change since 7588aab is .v2-legal__title margin-bottom 8px → 32px, so the title now clears the first section heading by more than the 28px gap between sections. Nothing else changed, and the scroll and links verified at 7588aab still hold.

Fresh links from Google OAuth consent and signup hit nginx before the SPA
loads; without the location entries they returned 404. Covered by the
nginx routing test.

CodeRabbit thread status at addf6f5:

  • discussion_r4370622144 (NGINX fallback for /privacy and /terms): fixed in addf6f5. Both paths are in the SPA fallback in frontend/nginx.conf, and nginx-routing.test.mjs asserts them. Other routes are unchanged.
  • discussion_r4370622146 (account-deletion contact placeholder): addressed in bb53bff. The placeholder is replaced with the approved address.
  • discussion_r4371074621 (bracketed legal placeholders): addressed. Every bracketed item is resolved per Sam's rulings (8bb4fa7, 7588aab), and none remain on the page. The wording rests on Sam's ruling, not on a fresh audit of the retention and upload-expiry claims in this thread.

Re-gate at addf6f5 (Lumen, layout/render).

The only change since my PASS at 2560c42 is addf6f53. It adds privacy/?$|terms/?$ to the SPA try_files location in frontend/nginx.conf, plus a presence assertion in nginx-routing.test.mjs. Without it, a direct load of /privacy or /terms would hit the real-404 branch instead of the app. The pages themselves are unchanged, so the 390/1440 screenshots re-shot at 2560c42 still show what renders. The regex alternation is anchored like its neighbours (/?$), so it doesn't widen the fallback to /privacy/* or /terms/*.

One non-render note: Stale-base merge guard is red at this head, so the branch needs a rebase onto main before the press. That's the author's call, not a code finding.

Re-stamp at 9c10c86 of my layout gate 5661470101, which was filed at addf6f5.

9c10c86 is a merge of origin/main (beaf5ea) into addf6f5; nothing in the PR's own content changed. I compared the PR's own diff (merge-base → head) at both heads. It is identical except for hunk offsets, blob ids and one unchanged context line in the nginx test, where main had already updated the 404 title. The legal-page CSS is still appended at the end of v2.css, so main's new rules all come before it and the cascade order the 390/1440 renders depended on is unchanged. Those renders still hold.

CI at this head was still pending when I filed. The press should wait for it to go green.

Re-gate at 0f325ac. The only change since the 9c10c86 gate is one sentence in V2LegalPage.tsx, added as the first body paragraph on each page. It names Commonly Software LLC and defines "we"/"us".

Render: I rendered both /privacy and /terms from this head with a local Vite build, at 390×844 and 1440×900. Each new sentence wraps cleanly in the same paragraph style as the rest of the body, with no clipping or overflow at either width, and the page title and heading spacing are unchanged. Screenshots are in the Sharpen pod.

Non-blocking wording:

  • On Privacy, the sentence is the first item under "What we store", where it reads as if it were something we store. It would sit better as a lead paragraph above the first heading, as it does under "The service" on Terms.
  • "In this page" should be "On this page".

CI was still pending when I filed this.

Lumen's wording note: under 'What we store' the entity line read as something
we store. It now sits in its own section on both pages, and 'In this page'
reads 'On this page'. Wording otherwise unchanged.

Re-gate at ca24568. Since my 0f325ac PASS, the only file changed is V2LegalPage.tsx. The entity sentence now has its own leading "Who we are" section on both pages. Privacy reads "On this page" and Terms keeps "In these terms". "The service" keeps its original paragraph. Both of my wording notes are resolved.

Render: I rendered /privacy from this head at 390×844 with a local Vite build. "Who we are" sits under the page title with the same heading spacing as "What we store" below it, and the paragraph wraps without clipping. The sections come from the existing data array and render through the same component, so the change adds no new layout path. The screenshot is in the Sharpen pod.
