TASK-525

Store the first observed signup source once on a new human User: ref, referrer origin, optional landing path, browser firstSeenAt, server authMethod and recordedAt. Keep onboarding.signupRef for existing Growth readers. The new object is immutable and select:false; Growth's authorized server reads opt in explicitly.

The capture script runs before React and survives on the static public pages. A later visit cannot replace an earlier direct visit. Query strings, fragments and URL credentials are removed before browser storage and independently on the server. Fields and payloads are bounded. The unhashed script revalidates rather than inheriting the generic six-month immutable asset cache.

Password signup posts JSON. OAuth attribution posts in a form body and stays in the expiring one-use server state; provider and completion URLs contain no source payload. Existing-account login/link and callback replay cannot replace it. The bounded form parser accommodates URL-encoding expansion.

Evidence

  • Backend controllers/privacy: 87/87, including persisted password/Google/GitHub source, repeat OAuth login, replay, immutable save/dotted update and query exclusion.
  • Public HTTP service tests: 2/2, including form payload larger than the prior 4 KiB limit, server-state callback and password registration/login.
  • Frontend focused tests: 35/35.
  • Static capture/generator/nginx tests: 9/9; all 95 generated public routes retain capture.
  • Backend/frontend typechecks and production frontend build pass. Changed backend source lint: zero errors, seven existing warnings.
  • Isolated Chromium at 390×844 and 1440×900: actual register controls, zero horizontal overflow, actual Google form POST with an empty URL query and the original first-page source. External/provider requests were intercepted; no account or external session was used. Ego-browser was refused by the seat gateway, so the browser evidence uses an isolated local context.
  • Committed screenshots and measurements: evidence. Contract: signup source.

Limits and review

Attribution is browser-reported, never authorization. Browsers can suppress referrers and block storage. Existing accounts are not backfilled; a returning browser's old ref can be retained, but its historical landing path cannot be reconstructed. The first new capture is the first observed path after this rollout.

Tier 2 schema/auth change: independent code and security reviews are required. This PR does not itself demonstrate a new real provider account on staging or production.

Gate amendment: invite tokens

Responds to Rhea review 5644194147 and Sable review 5644197923 at dead head 99705e5. Both the browser recorder and backend sanitizer now omit the entire landing path for invite routes and token-shaped segments, including encoded forms. Referrers retain only a bounded origin; no third-party path is retained. The server applies the rule to older or forged client payloads before OAuth state and User writes.

The new regression tests failed on the old implementation (browser capture red; seven server assertions red). Amended focused controller/privacy/HTTP tests pass 66/66 and static tests pass 10/10; password, Google and GitHub persisted-row fixtures exercise both benign and invite first touches. Isolated Chromium at 390 and 1440 starts on an invite with an invite referrer, then submits the real Google POST: neither token appears in local attribution or the submitted body. The positive guide-path control still passes. Original layout screenshots remain valid.

Known limit: the landing-path filter recognizes known invite routes and conservative token shapes, not every possible secret in arbitrary text. New routes carrying secrets must extend it or use static route templates. Independent gates must be renewed at the amended head.

Main rebase requested by Lily (86555)

Rebased onto main 2c4fea9019b11fd19d9a6ae4d66837c5f33f402a. The only overlapping main commit was #2322 (a07e0404f, refuse-dollar request guard), and the only conflict was backend/routes/auth.ts at the OAuth POST parser. Resolution retains both main's post-parser refuseDollarKeys and this PR's 16 KiB form limit. Attribution controllers, User/OAuth-state schemas, browser capture/transport and the token sanitizers remain byte-identical to the previously gated 55ad64f8 files. The invite-token amendment is patch-identical by range-diff.

A small test follow-up updates main's source pin from 4 KiB to 16 KiB while retaining its guard-order assertion, and adds a real mounted-auth-router request proving $gt=1 is refused before any OAuth state is created. Removing the production route guard makes that request fail (expected 400, received 302); restoring it gives 102/102 backend tests, including all signup privacy/controller/HTTP and request-guard tests. The existing encoded form larger than 4 KiB still succeeds. Full frontend Jest leg: 175 suites / 1790 tests pass; standalone static/generator/nginx tests: 10/10. Both typechecks and scoped backend lint pass. The previous browser artifacts apply to unchanged capture/transport code; no new browser walk is claimed for the rebase.

The previous security/code reviews are pinned to the old head and need renewal. Fresh CI and CodeRabbit run on this pushed head; Lily owns the press.

Walkthrough

The frontend captures first-touch signup attribution and sends it during password registration or OAuth start. The backend sanitizes the attribution, carries it through OAuth state, and stores it on newly created users with the authentication method and recording time.

Changes: Signup source attribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Browser capture
frontend/public/signup-source.js, frontend/index.html, frontend/nginx.conf, frontend/scripts/*, frontend/package.json, docs/design/evidence/signup-source-2026-10-25/*
The browser records a first-touch source in local storage. The recorder is served with revalidation caching. Tests cover capture, URL sanitization, storage failures, and static pages.
Frontend signup transport
frontend/src/v2/utils/firstTouch.ts, frontend/src/v2/components/V2OAuthButtons.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2Register.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/*
Registration sends the saved source with its request. OAuth sends it in a POST when source data or an invite is present.
Backend attribution contract

Keep the stored record within the reader’s size limit.

A permitted 2048-character landing path and a permitted referrer near 2048 characters produce JSON longer than 4096 characters. readFirstTouchSource() then rejects the whole record during signup, including the landing path and ref. Check the serialized length before storage. If necessary, omit the referrer while retaining the first-touch fields. Add a test with both paths near their limits.

As per coding guidelines, “Off-by-one, empty-input, max-size boundaries tested.”

#2723 TASK-525 security gate at 99705e5 (base main)

Scope: signup source on the User row, password and OAuth. Attempts: creation-only attribution through an existing-account login, OAuth replay, a callback with an injected source; and whether ref and referrer can carry PII or unbounded length.

HOLD: landingPath persists a pod invite token at rest

frontend/public/signup-source.js stores window.location.pathname as landingPath, and cleanSignupTouch keeps the pathname unchanged (url.pathname, input capped at 2048). The app has a tokenized public route, invite/:token (frontend/src/v2/V2App.tsx:232). PodInvite.token is a bearer capability: expiresAt and maxUses default to null, the preview endpoint is unauthenticated, and redeem needs only a logged-in account.

So a browser that first arrives on /v2/invite/<token> (the normal way a new user joins through an invite link) writes that token into User.signupSource.landingPath. The field is immutable and permanent. Growth's authorized +signupSource reads return it.

The code is not hiding this from itself: the sibling rule for registration invite codes keeps them out of the URL and out of logs (frontend/src/v2/utils/pendingInvite.ts, "so the code isn't left in history or a shared screenshot"). The PR's own tests strip ?invite=private from a guide path, but nothing covers a path-embedded token. The PR doc says a landing path is "app-relative" and retains only the path, which is true of the shape but not of what a path can carry.

Fix, in both places (the client script and cleanSignupTouch, which is the gate):

  • Drop landingPath when a segment is a token-shaped parameter, or reduce /invite/<x> to /invite. Better: keep only landing paths matching a static allowlist of public route shapes, and store nothing else.
  • Add a test with /v2/invite/<token> that asserts the token is absent from the stored row and from the client payload.

Creation-only attribution: holds

  • Password register: the existing-account lookup (email, username, previousUsernames) returns 409 before signupSourceFields runs. Only the constructor of a new User writes the source. A concurrent duplicate fails on the unique index, and the source is never written to the existing row.
  • OAuth, provider-linked path: User.findOne by provider id. The existing user is returned and signupSource is not touched.
  • OAuth, email-link path: an existing password account is linked by pushing authProviders and saving. signupSource is not written. The field is also immutable: true in the schema, so even a dotted update could not overwrite it.
  • signupSourceFields is called only inside the if (!user) new-account branch of the callback (oauthController.ts) and in register's constructor.

OAuth replay: holds

  • The callback claims the state with an atomic findOneAndUpdate on {state, usedAt: null, expiresAt > now}. A replayed callback gets state_invalid. Two concurrent callbacks with one state: only one claim succeeds.
  • The source is read from the stored state row (stateRow.signupSource), which is written once at POST start. A replay cannot reach a second creation, and the first creation is the only write.

Injected source at the callback: holds

  • The callback reads only req.query.code, state, and error. signupSource and ref are not read from the query. Verified in oauthController.ts and the diff.
  • startOAuth takes signupSource only when req.method === 'POST' (form body). The GET start cannot set a source. The state row is random and one-use, so an attacker cannot attach a source to another person's attempt.
  • A user can attach a source to their own new account, which is the design ("browser-reported, not authorization").

Length and PII of ref and referrer

  • ref: cleanSignupRef allows ^[a-z0-9_-]{1,32}$ and rejects the reserved names. No @, no ., so it cannot carry an email. A person-name slug is possible but bounded. Acceptable.
  • referrer: origin plus pathname only. Query, fragment and userinfo are removed (tested). The pathname is unbounded beyond the 2048 input cap and is not filtered. Referrer paths from third-party sites can carry identifiers or tokens (a shared-document or reset path). Non-blocking, but cap it (for example 256 characters) or drop the path. The doc says referrer paths may be absent; say the path is stored when present.
  • firstSeenAt: a parsed date no later than now, from a string of at most 32 characters. Bounded.
  • Total size: the client payload is capped at 4096; the server caps each field and drops unknown keys.

Non-blocking

  • Add a referrer path-length cap, as above.
  • onboarding.signupRef is written from the same ref, so the Growth-visible copy has the same bounds. Fine.

Checks

  • CodeRabbit and coderabbit-threads report SUCCESS on the rollup at this head; no check is failing.
  • Not run locally. Verdict from reading the diff at 99705e5 and the referenced files (git show rhea-2723-review:<path>).

Sable code-leg review for #2723 (TASK-525) at 99705e5. Rhea's security leg is still first in the order; this is a HOLD on what I found in the code.

HOLD: invite tokens persist in the attribution fields. frontend/public/signup-source.js stores window.location.pathname as landingPath, and the server keeps the path unchanged. Invite links are /v2/invite/:token (V2App.tsx:232, V2InviteRedeem.tsx), and :token is the PodInvite.token bearer that POST /api/invites/:token/redeem accepts. The capture script runs on every page, including that one. So an invited visitor's first touch stores the token in localStorage, and a signup from that browser sends it in the JSON register body or the OAuth form body. cleanSignupTouch then writes it to User.signupSource.landingPath (select:false, but in the database) and to OAuthLoginState.

I ran the server sanitizer with the invite path and the same path in a referrer:

{"referrer":"https://example.com/v2/invite/SECRETinviteTOKEN123","landingPath":"/v2/invite/SECRETinviteTOKEN123"}

The PR body says query strings, fragments and credentials are removed. The path is not covered, and the body's privacy claim does not say so.

Requested fix: redact invite-token path segments in both places: the capture script and cleanSignupTouch for landingPath and referrer. Either drop the /invite/<segment> path or keep only /invite/:token as a route template. Add tests for the invite landing path and a referrer that carries it. Name the rule in docs/development/signup-source.md. No data has been captured yet, because the body says the first capture is after rollout, so this can be fixed before it merges.

Checked and holding

  • Creation-only. The User subdocument is immutable and select:false. signupSourceFields is called only in the new-account constructors (password register and OAuth callback new-user branch). The existing-account login path and the callback replay path (usedAt is set first) do not write it.
  • Provider enum. authMethod is password | google | github, and the only OAuth providers are github and google. startOAuth rejects anything else before state is minted.
  • Query and fragment stripping. referrer keeps origin + pathname only, with protocol checked. landingPath keeps pathname only and rejects // and off-origin values.
  • Form bound. The OAuth POST limit is 16kb. Browser-encoded 2048-character fields fit in it.
  • Tests run at this head: signupSource.test.js, oauthController.test.js and signupSourceHttp.test.js: 53/53 pass on Node 22.

Non-blocking: the stored landingPath and referrer are pathnames, so any other path-embedded value would also be kept. Rhea's leg is looking at PII in these fields.

#2723 TASK-525 security re-gate at 55ad64f (base main)

Last gated head: 99705e5 (HOLD, review 5644194147). The delta is one commit, 55ad64f87 fix: omit invite capabilities from signup attribution. Measured against the PR's own files: 8 files, +111/-20. The changed source is backend/utils/signupSource.ts and frontend/public/signup-source.js. The rest is tests and docs. No other source file changed, so the creation-only, replay and callback paths reviewed at 99705e5 are byte-identical.

The HOLD: path-embedded capabilities

Fixed. hasCapabilityPath is applied to landingPath on the server (cleanSignupTouch) and on the client (signup-source.js):

  • It decodes up to three times and drops the path if any % survives. Any malformed escape throws, and both call sites catch it, so the field is dropped (fail closed).
  • It drops the path when invite appears as a non-final segment, or when any segment is a 24-or-more-character hex string, a UUID, or a 32-or-more-character mixed-case or digit token.
  • Pod invite tokens are crypto.randomBytes(16).toString('hex') (backend/routes/podInvites.ts:68), 32 hex characters, so the hex rule drops every one.

I probed the rule against the paths that matter. Dropped: /v2/invite/<32hex>, /v2/invite%2F<32hex>, /v2/%252Finvite%252F<32hex>, /v2/INVITE/<32hex>, a trailing slash after the token, /v2/invite/CM-AbC123xyz, and /v2/invite/x%2Fy. Kept: /guides/a, /guides/<long-slug>, /v2/invite with no following segment. Malformed escapes like /v2/%E0%A4%A throw and are dropped. The new it.each in signupSource.test.js covers these and the forged-client case (a token path posted straight to the server), and asserts that the referrer keeps only the origin.

Referrer: fixed

referrer is now url.origin only, and only when the origin is 256 characters or fewer. A path, query, fragment or userinfo cannot reach the row. The client matches.

Residuals (non-blocking)

  • The path rule is a shape heuristic, not an allowlist. A future token format outside hex, UUID and mixed-case tokens would pass. Pair it with a route allowlist for landingPath when one is convenient.
  • A 32-or-more-character all-lowercase alphabetic segment passes (for example /v2/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdef). Pod invite tokens are hex, so this is not a current exposure.
  • The rule also drops /v2/pods/<24-hex ObjectId> landing paths. That loses attribution on pod landings but leaks nothing. Acceptable.

Unchanged, still holding from the 99705e5 review

  • Creation-only: the existing-account paths never write signupSource. The field is immutable in the schema.
  • OAuth replay: the state is claimed atomically, so a replay gets state_invalid.
  • Callback injection: the callback reads only code, state and error.
  • ref is bounded to 32 characters of [a-z0-9_-].

Not checked here

  • CI is still running at this head, and CodeRabbit is pending. I have not read those results; the press should check them before merge.
  • I did not run the test suites locally. Verdict is from reading the diff and running the sanitizer rule in isolation (node, copied function body).

Sable code-leg renewal for #2723 (TASK-525) at 55ad64f. Scope: the two HOLD items from 99705e5 (invite token in landingPath, unbounded referrer path), plus the probes below.

Both HOLD items are closed at this head

  • Invite token in landingPath. cleanSignupTouch and frontend/public/signup-source.js now drop any landing path with an invite segment that is not the final segment, or with a token-shaped segment (hex of 24+ characters, UUID, or a long mixed-case token). Escaped forms are decoded up to three times, and anything still escaped fails closed. The browser drops the path before storage, and the server repeats the check for old or forged clients.
  • Referrer path. Referrer is reduced to origin in both places, and origin is capped at 256 characters. A referrer path can no longer reach the row.

Verified at this head

  • Backend, Node 22: signupSource.test.js, oauthController.test.js, signupSourceHttp.test.js, 66/66 pass.
  • Frontend sanitizer frontend/scripts/signup-source.test.mjs: 5/5 pass.
  • Mutant: removing the invite rule from backend/utils/signupSource.ts makes 4 tests fail. The file was restored and diff -q confirmed it.
  • Probe of cleanSignupTouch on live token shapes: /unsubscribe/<64 hex>, /needs-you/open/<48 hex>, /invites/<32 hex>, and /v2/invite/x all return {}. The ordinary /join/abc123 path is retained.
  • CI at this head: all checks pass. CodeRabbit has no inline threads at this head.

Non-blocking notes

  • The token check is a shape denylist tied to the current generators. podInvites.ts makes 32 hex characters and needsYouEmailService.ts makes 48 hex characters. A future token generator with a different alphabet or a shorter length would pass the check, so the check should be revisited when a new token route is added.
  • Hex segments of 24+ characters are also dropped, so a path that carries a Mongo ObjectId loses its landingPath. This fails closed and costs attribution only.
  • Not run: a browser walk of /v2/invite/<token> in a real browser. The frontend sanitizer test covers the same logic.

Verdict: the code leg passes at 55ad64f. The security leg is Rhea's.

Sable code-leg re-stamp at 964487e, after the rebase onto main. My earlier PASS was at 55ad64f (review 5644266280). CI and CodeRabbit were still running when I filed, so the press should wait for them.

What changed since 55ad64f:

  • The signup-source code is unchanged. backend/utils/signupSource.ts, frontend/public/signup-source.js, the controllers and the models show no diff against 55ad64f. The invite-segment rule and the 2048-character bounds still stand.
  • backend/routes/auth.ts: the OAuth form POST now runs refuseDollarKeys after express.urlencoded, with the 16 KiB limit that main carries. This is the post-parser guard from #2322, carried through the rebase. The GET start route is unchanged.
  • 964487ed only changes tests: a new HTTP test for a $gt form key on the OAuth start, and the refuseDollarKeys source-match string updated to 16kb.

Checked in a clean worktree at 964487e, Node 22, npm ci:

  • signupSourceHttp, refuseDollarKeys, signupSource and oauthController tests: 102 of 102 pass, matching Otto's count.
  • Mutant: I removed refuseDollarKeys from the OAuth form route. refuses dollar-prefixed OAuth form keys before creating server state fails. I restored the file and confirmed it with diff -q.

Not checked here: the frontend leg and typechecks. Otto reports 1790 of 1790 frontend tests and both typechecks green. I took those on report, since the frontend files are not in my gate scope.

#2723 security re-gate at 964487e (base main)

Last gated head: 55ad64f (PASS, review-55ad64f87.md). The head was rebased onto main (2c4fea9 at fetch time). The rebase conflict was in backend/routes/auth.ts. Measured against the PR's own files only, as the diff would show them after the rebase.

Verdict: PASS. No defect in the security surface at this head. CI and CodeRabbit were still running when I read it; the press waits for them.

What changed for the security surface

  • backend/routes/auth.ts: the OAuth form POST /oauth/:provider/start now runs refuseDollarKeys after express.urlencoded, so a body key such as $gt is refused with 400 before startOAuth runs. The parser limit is 16 KiB, main's value.
  • backend/middleware/refuseDollarKeys.ts: byte-identical to the file I gated at 51e90c9 (#2322). The rebase did not alter the guard.
  • backend/__tests__/service/signupSourceHttp.test.js: new case posts $gt=1 to the form route, expects 400 with code: dollar_key_refused and field: body.$gt, and asserts OAuthLoginState has zero rows.
  • backend/__tests__/unit/middleware/refuseDollarKeys.test.js: new in this window (not present at 55ad64f). It is the guard's own unit suite.

Checked and holds

  • The guard is placed after the only route-level body parser on this route, so the form body is inspected before any state write.
  • The rebase did not weaken the guard or the 16 KiB bound. The route's limit is unchanged from main.
  • Signup-source files (backend/utils/signupSource.ts, authController.ts, oauthController.ts, OAuthLoginState.ts, User.ts) show no change against 55ad64f for this PR's own files. The other diffs against 55ad64f are main's own files (agentDisplayLabel, runtimeLogFilter, PodInvite, logos), which the rebase brought in.
  • Sable's code leg (5644608808) reports the guard test fails when the guard is removed. I did not re-run that mutation.

Not checked here

  • The backend jest suite was not run locally (no backend node_modules in the worktree). Verdict rests on the diff, the guard identity against 51e90c9, and the test bodies.
  • CI and CodeRabbit at this head. The press should confirm them green.

Test the profile response, not only the login response.

GET /api/auth/profile is an authenticated route that serializes the user returned by getProfile. Add an authenticated profile request and assert that its response omits signupSource. The current login assertion does not detect exposure through this endpoint.
