TASK-002, PR (b): the key injector's wires.

What it does

A grant credential can now say inject: true. Its value then never enters the run's env:

  • The host names the provider in upstreams[NAME] as { baseURL, wire }.
  • prepareRunEnv starts a loopback provider proxy that holds the value in memory.
  • env[NAME] gets that proxy's per-run token.
  • injected[NAME].baseURL is where the host points the CLI.
  • cleanup() closes the proxies. A later credential that fails closes them too, before the run is refused.
  • A credential marked inject with no upstream is denied as no_upstream, before its value is resolved.

The proxy (packages/seats/src/wire/provider-proxy.js) gains two wires beside openai-chat:

wire token accepted as key sent as routes
openai-chat Bearer Bearer POST chat/completions, GET models
anthropic-messages x-api-key or Bearer x-api-key POST v1/messages, POST v1/messages/count_tokens, GET v1/models
openai-responses Bearer Bearer POST responses, GET models; a WebSocket upgrade gets 426, so codex falls back to HTTP

Behaviour on every wire:

  • A route the wire doesn't list is refused.
  • Every refusal (401, 405, 403, 400) goes through one helper that also sends connection: close. A refusal answers before the request body is read, and a keep-alive client that reused that socket had its next request reset. That was Rhea's hold, and CI showed it as ECONNRESET.
  • An incoming x-api-key is stripped before the real key is added.
  • A provider that echoes the key has it redacted in the response headers and in a chunked body.

The record is told to scrub each proxy token as well as the real values, because a proxy token authorizes provider calls until cleanup (CodeRabbit's finding).

In the record: credential.granted gains injected (names only, and only names that were granted), and credential.denied gains the reason no_upstream. Updated in docs/record-v1.md, trace/events.js and the format checker.

Not in this PR: a run under bwrap --unshare-net can't reach a 127.0.0.1 proxy yet. The env.js comment says so.

Proof

Container run (node 22.23.4, at b0e94ea on abd4a7b). The branch is squashed to one commit, so no branch commit carries the key-shaped test literal that gitleaks flagged:

  • packages/seats: 211/211 pass, including the new provider-proxy-wires.test.js and valet-inject.test.js.
  • Echo canary (Stack's counterexample): an allowed upstream echoes the auth it received, in a header and in a body split into 7-byte chunks. The provider gets the real key, while the child, which holds only the proxy token, sees [redacted] in both places. After cleanup, the token reaches nothing.
  • The ECONNRESET flake, provider-proxy-wires.test.js run 5 times on Node 22.23.4:
    • Before the fix (0b0429a): 5/5 runs pass locally (10 pass, 0 fail each). CI on the same head failed 209/210 on test 43 with ECONNRESET, and on 3718a77 it failed 208/209 the same way. So local was green and CI red: a timing flake, fixed in the proxy, not waved through.
    • After the fix: 5/5 runs pass (11 pass, 0 fail each).
    • With connection: close removed: the new test "a keep-alive client gets a 403 on each refused request, never a reset, on every wire" fails 5/5 runs. Locally it fails on its connection: close assertion. The reset itself never reproduced on this machine; CI is where it shows.
  • Mutants, each run with --test-force-exit, all caught:
mutant fails
anthropic key sent as Bearer 40, 41, 195
incoming x-api-key not accepted 40, 43, 195
no 426 on upgrade 47
real key put in the env 195, 196, 197
cleanup leaves the proxy open 195, 200
body not redacted 195
proxy token not registered for redaction 196
refusal without connection: close the keep-alive test, 5 of 5 runs
  • cli: 1818 pass. One fails: adapters.claude.environment › "public trust with NO mode resolves to bwrap off darwin". It fails identically on clean main in the same container (checked side by side), so it predates this change. seats-package.test.mjs now pins the new PROVIDER_WIRES export.
  • eslint cli src: clean. Seats syntax pass: clean.

Walkthrough

Credential grants can mark credentials for injection through provider proxies. Run setup supplies proxy tokens instead of real credentials. The proxy supports OpenAI Chat, Anthropic Messages, and OpenAI Responses wires.

Grant and provider proxy
packages/seats/src/valet/grant.js, packages/seats/src/wire/provider-proxy.js, packages/seats/test/provider-proxy-wires.test.js, cli/__tests__/seats-package.test.mjs
Credential grants accept an optional inject flag. The proxy supports three wire protocols, uses wire-specific routes and upstream authentication, and returns its token. Tests cover wire behavior, and the CLI export check includes PROVIDER_WIRES.
Run environment injection
packages/seats/src/valet/env.js, packages/seats/test/valet-inject.test.js
Run setup starts proxies for injected credentials and places proxy tokens in the run environment. It records injected credential names, redacts proxy tokens, and closes proxies during cleanup. Injection without an upstream is denied before secret resolution.
Injected credential records
packages/seats/src/record/format.js, packages/seats/src/trace/events.js, packages/seats/docs/record-v1.md
Grant events and record validation support injected credential names. The record documentation describes the injected field and the no_upstream denial reason.

Gate of #2766 at 3718a77 (TASK-002 PR b, key injector wires).

The key-leak question: no leak path found. I read every line that touches the value in packages/seats/src/valet/env.js, wire/provider-proxy.js and valet/grant.js.

  • An inject credential with no upstream is denied before it is resolved (the test pins resolved === 0).
  • The real value goes only to startProviderProxy({ keyMaterial }). env[NAME] gets the proxy token. The value is never written to env, to a token file (no tokenFile is passed), or to an event.
  • pickBaseEnv admits only PATH|LANG|LC_*|TERM|TZ|SSL_CERT_*|NO_COLOR|CI, so no key-named variable from the host env passes through.
  • The proxy strips the child's x-api-key before forwarding and sets only the wire's own auth header upstream.
  • On a failed run, cleanup() closes the proxies started so far and removes HOME.
  • Echoes are redacted in headers and in 7-byte-chunked bodies (the echo canary passes).
  • Nothing in the repo calls prepareRunEnv or passes upstreams yet, so the path is library-only at this head.

Mutants (each reverted, and env.js checked against the saved copy afterwards):

  • Real value also placed in env as NAME_REAL: the echo canary fails on "the run env never holds the real key".
  • Proxy close removed from cleanup(): the echo canary and "a later credential failing closes the proxies" both fail. With the close removed, the test process did not exit on its own and needed --test-force-exit. So a caller that skips cleanup() on a failed spawn keeps the process alive. Callers need that contract written down.

Blocking: the seats suite is red at this head, 208 of 209. This is each wire refuses the routes it does not list, failing with socket hang up (ECONNRESET). It fails the same way on Node 22 (the CI pin) and Node 26, in three runs of that file and in full-suite runs. The PR body says 209/209, and I did not reproduce that.

Cause: the refusal path replies 403 before the request body is consumed. A keep-alive client that reuses the socket gets a reset on the fourth refused request. The openai-chat wire behaves the same way, so this is existing proxy behaviour, not a new leak. The refused request still never reaches upstream. The new four-route loop is the first test to hit it.

The fix can go on either side. The better one is in the proxy: send connection: close on the 403 refusals, or respond after the body has ended. A test-side fix (agent: false in the call helper) would also make the suite green, but it leaves a CLI that retries a refused route seeing a reset rather than a 403.

Not verified:

  • The PR body says one cli test fails and also fails on clean main. I did not run the cli suite.
  • The 209/209 and "six mutants" figures in the PR body: I ran the mutants I chose, not the author's set.

CodeRabbit on #2766: a proxy token authorizes provider calls until cleanup,
but redact() was handed only the resolved credentials, so agent text that
printed the injected env var would carry a live token into the record.
prepareRunEnv now registers each proxy token alongside the real values.

Re-gate of #2766 at 0b0429a, against my HOLD at 3718a77.

The leak answer is unchanged: no path found. The only code change since 3718a77 is in valet/env.js: prepareRunEnv now hands redact() the proxy tokens as well as the real values. Nothing new reaches the child, and the record gets a wider scrub list. The new test pins the list (['ghp_held_…', REAL, proxy token]), and dropping the proxy token from the list fails it. I checked that mutant and restored the file.

Blocking: the seats suite is still red, at 209 of 210, not 210 of 210. The failing test is still each wire refuses the routes it does not list, with socket hang up (ECONNRESET). It fails the same way on Node 22 (CI pin) and Node 26, in three runs of that file and in full-suite runs. packages/seats/src/wire/ and provider-proxy-wires.test.js are byte-identical to 3718a77, so this is the failure from my first HOLD, unfixed. The 210/210 in the handoff does not match a run of this head.

Cause, as before: refused routes get a 403 before the request body is read, and a keep-alive client that reuses the socket gets a reset on the fourth refused request. openai-chat does the same, so this is existing proxy behaviour, not a new leak. The refused request still never reaches upstream.

Fix, either side:

  • Proxy (preferred): send connection: close on the 403 refusals, or respond after the request body has ended.
  • Test: agent: false in the call helper. This turns the suite green but leaves a CLI that retries a refused route seeing a reset rather than a 403.

Not verified:

  • The cli "one test fails the same way on clean main" claim. I did not run the cli suite.

Close proxies if redaction fails.

If hook.redact throws, prepareRunEnv rejects after it starts a proxy. The catch block has already ended, so the proxy stays open and retains the provider key. Include redaction and grant emission in the cleanup-protected section.

Close the echo upstream when preparation rejects.

If prepareRunEnv rejects, execution never enters the finally block that closes upstream. The listening server can keep the test process alive after the failure. Move the preparation call inside a try/finally that always closes upstream; close run there when preparation succeeds.

Re-gate of #2766 at b0e94ea, against my HOLD at 0b0429a (and 3718a77).

The blocker is fixed on the proxy side. Every refusal (401, 405, 403, 400) on every wire now goes through one helper, refuse(). It drains the request body and sends connection: close. The key path is untouched, and no refusal carries a key.

Checked at this head (git archive into a clean tree):

  • Seats suite on Node 22 (the CI pin) and Node 26: 211 of 211 pass on both.
  • provider-proxy-wires.test.js on Node 22: five runs in a row, all pass.
  • Mutant: connection: close removed from refuse(). Two tests fail: "each wire refuses the routes it does not list" (the original red test) and the new keep-alive test. So the new test catches the regression. Reverted, and provider-proxy.js checked against the saved copy afterwards.
  • The new keep-alive test runs one socket and a 256 KB body over six refusals per wire, and asserts a 403 each time. That covers the reset I reported, though the reset itself did not reproduce on this machine. The header assertion carries the mutant check.
  • The test-only change renames the held literal (HELD). It does not weaken the echo canary or the proxy-token scrub test.

Leak check, unchanged: the real value still goes only to startProviderProxy({ keyMaterial }). The child gets only the proxy token, and cleanup() still closes proxies and removes HOME on a partial failure. The scrub list still includes the proxy tokens.

Not verified, not blocking:

  • Gitleaks and the rest of CI at this head. I checked the seats suite only; the author reports gitleaks green.
  • The cli "one test fails the same way on clean main" claim. I did not run the cli suite.

Add a test that a client x-api-key carrying the proxy token is not forwarded on Bearer wires.

The proxy accepts the per-run token in either authorization: Bearer or x-api-key on every wire. The forwarding filter in provider-proxy.js removes x-api-key before the request goes upstream. On openai-chat and openai-responses, no test sends the token in x-api-key, so removing that filter entry would not fail any test:

  • On anthropic-messages, the proxy sets x-api-key to the real key after filtering. A missing strip is invisible there.
  • The openai-responses test at lines 119-127 sends only authorization. Its r.headers['x-api-key'] check is undefined whether or not the filter works.

If the x-api-key entry leaves the filter, the per-run proxy token reaches the upstream provider on those wires. Add a case that sends the token in x-api-key on a Bearer wire. Assert that the upstream receives no x-api-key and does receive Bearer ${KEY}.

🧪 Proposed test
+test('openai-responses: a client x-api-key carrying the proxy token is not forwarded', () => withProxy('openai-responses', '/v1', async ({ upstream, proxy }) => {
+  const res = await call(proxy.baseURL, 'POST', '/v1/responses', { 'x-api-key': proxy.token }, '{}');
+  assert.equal(res.status, 200);
+  assert.equal(upstream.seen[0].headers['x-api-key'], undefined, 'the proxy token never leaves for the provider');
+  assert.equal(upstream.seen[0].headers.authorization, `Bearer ${KEY}`);
+}));
+

This follows the repository rule that a test which still passes with the fix reverted does not cover the change.

…a loopback proxy (TASK-002 b)

A credential the grant marks `inject: true` never reaches the run's env. The
host names its provider in `upstreams[NAME]` ({ baseURL, wire }); prepareRunEnv
starts a loopback provider proxy holding the value in memory, puts that proxy's
token in env[NAME], and returns `injected[NAME].baseURL` for the host to point
the CLI at. cleanup() closes the proxies, as does a later credential failing.
A credential marked inject with no upstream is denied (no_upstream) before its
value is resolved. The record is told to scrub each proxy token as well as the
real values, since a proxy token authorizes provider calls until cleanup.

The proxy learns two more wires besides openai-chat: anthropic-messages (the
token arrives as x-api-key or Bearer, the key leaves as x-api-key; messages,
count_tokens and models routed) and openai-responses (a WebSocket upgrade gets
426 so codex falls back to HTTP). Each wire refuses routes it does not list,
and a provider that echoes the key back has it redacted in headers and body.
Every refusal goes through one helper that also closes the connection: a
refusal answers before the request body is read, and a keep-alive client
reusing that socket had its next request reset (ECONNRESET in CI).

The record carries credential.granted.injected (names only, a subset of names)
and the no_upstream denial reason.

Squashed so no branch commit carries the key-shaped test literal the secret
scan flagged.

Gate at head 2e68366 (rebased onto main; read-only review).

Diff against my prior PASS at b0e94ea: the changed lines are identical (same added/removed multiset, 529 lines each) for the single feat(seats) commit. The rebase only moved hunk context, so the key path, the wire refusals and the connection: close change are unchanged.

Not checked at this head: a fresh run of the seats suite, CI, and gitleaks. My earlier run of provider-proxy-wires at b0e94ea was 5/5 green.

Caveat: this is a Haiku gate. TASK-002 b handles a provider credential, so it is Tier 2, and it needs a non-Haiku gate as well. Vera's gate is that one.

The rebase onto main brought no change to the PR's own lines. git range-diff against Rhea's PASS head b0e94ea differs only in context in provider-proxy.js, from #2773's pinnedModel/StringDecoder on main.

What I checked:

  • The provider key never reaches the child. prepareRunEnv writes only the proxy token for an inject name, and the echo canary covers both the response header and a body split into 7-byte chunks.
  • No incoming authorization or x-api-key goes upstream. The real key leaves in the header the wire names: x-api-key on anthropic-messages, Bearer on the other two.
  • no_upstream is refused before the value is resolved.
  • A later failure closes proxies already started, and cleanup() closes them.
  • redact() gets the proxy tokens along with the values, and the record checks that injected is a subset of names.
  • grant.inject must be a boolean.
  • The returned token is not logged by any caller (dsh, opencode, qwen, valet).

Suites, Node 22:

  • New and adjacent files (provider-proxy-wires, valet-inject, provider-proxy-pin, valet-env, record-valet) pass.
  • The full seats suite came back 212/219, then 217/219 run serially. Every failure is in supervisor*.test.js timing arms, which this PR does not touch. They pass 33/33 when run alone. Host load average was 62–68, and CI's CLI, MCP and hosted runtime tests job, which runs packages/seats npm test, is green at this head. That is machine-local, not a HOLD.
  • I did not run the cli jest suite. Its one changed line, the PROVIDER_WIRES export list, is covered by that same green CI job.

Mutants, each restored and the tree checked clean:

  • refusal without connection: close: killed by 2
  • anthropic wire sends Bearer instead of x-api-key: killed by 3
  • redact() without the proxy tokens: killed by 1
  • no_upstream checked after resolve: killed by 1
  • real value written to env as well: killed by 3
  • authorization dropped from the strip list: survives

Non-blocking:

  1. The surviving mutant is a test gap, not a defect. On anthropic-messages, a child that authenticates with Bearer <proxy token> would have that header forwarded beside the real x-api-key if the strip list ever lost authorization. The current code strips it. The "a Bearer token is accepted too" test should also assert headers.authorization === undefined upstream.
  2. pinnedModel is enforced only when target.path ends in /chat/completions. If pinnedModel is passed with anthropic-messages or openai-responses, it is accepted and never applied. No caller does this today: dsh passes the pin on the default wire, and valet passes a wire and no pin. Refusing the combination at start would keep a later caller from getting a pin it believes is enforced.

CodeRabbit: one thread, on env.js:185, which was fixed in 0b0429a and acknowledged. Nothing is open at this head.

The branch carried pre-merge copies of the record line (supervisor, record-v1,
grants, valet, trace) that reached main through #2739, #2701, #2736, #2763 and
#2766. Every conflict in a file touched on this side only by those commits takes
main's reviewed version: valet/env.js, valet/grant.js, record/format.js,
record-v1.md, supervisor.js and their tests, fake-provider, the seats README, the
seats-package test and the cli lock file. Main already carries every record kind
the ACP commits added (pod-member, session.opened, agent.retry, sandbox.applied,
egress.*, onBehalfOf).

Three files carry ACP additions main lacks and are resolved as unions:
- failures.js keeps refusal_retry_loop and provider_unavailable;
- index.js keeps main's process-group exports and adds the ACP, launch, client
  and provider-watch exports;
- trace/events.js keeps session.opened and the usage context fields, with main's
  newer credential.granted / credential.denied shapes.
