docs(agents): TASK-018 walked webhook path and runtime rules - #2799
TASK-018: the docs.commonly.me runtime page named buttons that are not in the product, and it was missing two rules the D94 webhook walk showed.
What changed
docs-site/agents/connect.mdx: the "The listener" section named "Bring your own runtime" and "Install + generate token". Neither string exists in frontend/src/i18n/locales/en.json. The section now gives the walked webhook path only: agent init run from a clone, then run the bot directly.
docs-site/agents/runtime-protocol.mdx: adds the read-before-post rule. A runtime post with unread pod messages is refused with 409 and code: "unseen_messages" (backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts:1585). It also adds the User-Agent note: Python's default urllib User-Agent gets a Cloudflare 403 (1010), so set one.
docs/architecture/CAP.md: the heading and intro said four interfaces, and the file lists five. Changed to five.
Review
Tier 0, docs only. No in-app copy changed.
GTM reviews public wording before merge.
Not verified: the COMMONLY_BASE_URL=https://api.commonly.me value in the run command, taken from the walk note rather than a checked-in recipe. Check it against the D94 walk record before merge.
The walk used the clone path. The npm package @commonlyai/cli 0.1.185 also ships agent init, but the npm route is not walked, so the page does not describe it.
The rest of the connect page (Keep it running, MCP server, Run one seat by hand) is unchanged and is not covered by the D94 walk.
…(TASK-018)
The runtime page named two buttons the product does not have ("Bring your
own runtime", "Install + generate token"). Replace its steps with the
walked webhook path: agent init from a clone until the npm package ships
it, then run the bot directly.
Add the two rules from the D94 walk: a post with unread pod messages is
refused with 409 unseen_messages (agentsRuntime.ts:1585), and Python's
default User-Agent gets a Cloudflare 403 (1010).
CAP.md said four interfaces and lists five.

The connection guide now describes Python bot setup and terminal agent options. The runtime protocol guide adds request requirements. The CAP documentation changes its stated kernel interface count from four to five.
Changes: Agent documentation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Python bot setup and terminal agents docs-site/agents/connect.mdx, backend/__tests__/unit/scripts/docsSiteFacts.test.js
The guide replaces listener setup with instructions to scaffold and run a Python bot. It documents Claude as the default terminal agent, Codex as an alternative, and a headless Claude command. The guide says to keep the bot running and not commit runtime tokens. Tests check the commands and section order.
The guide documents a User-Agent requirement for requests routed through Cloudflare. It also documents a 409 response with code: "unseen_messages" when an agent posts with unread pod messages.
Architecture documentation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Kernel interface count docs/architecture/CAP.md
The heading and description change the stated count from four kernel interfaces to five.
The new connection guide has several steps that fail when followed literally on a fresh machine. The Python bot command names the wrong file, the cloned CLI is run without installing its dependencies, and the terminal path skips CLI install and login. Fix these and the matching test assertions before merge. The impact is limited to documentation and its test.

The published @commonlyai/cli 0.1.185 ships agent init, so the clone-only
reason was wrong. The clone path is kept because it is the walked path.

Limited reads do not clear the unread hold when more than the page size is unread.
A default GET /pods/:podId/messages clears the hold only when the returned page contains every unread message. With limit=20 and more than 20 unread messages, the read leaves the hold in place, and the next runtime post still returns 409 unseen_messages. limit caps at 50, and before or threadRootId reads do not clear the hold at all. Document this limit. For larger backlogs, point the runtime to the catch-up path instead of a single limited read.

Document the continueAnyway bypass for unread-message refusals.
The 409 refusal applies only when the pod has unread messages. The paragraph states that condition correctly. It does not mention that a post can skip the check. The runtime POST check runs only when req.body.continueAnyway !== true, so a body with continueAnyway: true posts without the 409. The runtime protocol page does not document this field, so runtime clients have no stated way to use it.

The agent init example resolved ../commonly from /tmp/echo-bot, not the

and its export lines; it now asserts the walked webhook commands and the
renamed section order.

Fixed in 9be4137, per CodeRabbit's note on connect.mdx: the clone now lands at /tmp/commonly and the example uses that absolute path (discussion_r4374842125).
The docs-facts test failure (Backend tests 2/3) was ours: it pinned the removed listener block. It now asserts the walked webhook commands and the renamed section order. Test passes locally.
agent init --name echo-bot generates echo-bot.py, not bot.py. The command therefore fails because bot.py does not exist. Update the prose and command to use echo-bot.py.

Update the generated-file invocation in the agent setup instructions to run

The assertion currently requires python3 bot.py, which preserves the broken documentation path. Change it to python3 echo-bot.py so the test catches a mismatch with the agent init --name echo-bot output.

Lily's ruling (89818): document the terminal card form (attach, then run) as
the default and the headless export form (COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN, run --adapter)
as the option for a server or CI box. Placeholder token only.

Use a shell-safe token placeholder.
If a user copies this command literally, < and > are parsed as redirections. The export command fails before commonly agent run executes. Use a placeholder such as cm_agent_REPLACE_ME and state that the user must replace it before running.

Pin the headless command to Commonly and quote the token placeholder.
The unquoted <token> is parsed as shell redirection. Without COMMONLY_API_URL, the CLI can also select a different saved active instance. Since this page targets Commonly, export its URL and assert both lines. This is a documentation and test-contract gap, not a production defect.

Lily's ruling (90151): the path most people take comes first. Order is now
terminal (attach, run), headless (export, run --adapter), then the webhook
bot retitled Your own program. The honest line stays: only the webhook bot is
walked end to end until the TASK-011 walk lands.

The clone command does not install packages. On a fresh clone, cli/src/index.js imports commander, which the CLI declares as a dependency. This node command therefore fails before agent init starts. Add a dependency-install step for /tmp/commonly/cli before the command. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add the CLI install and login steps before attach.
The terminal section starts with commonly agent attach but never tells the reader to install the CLI or log in. On a fresh machine, the command fails. The attach action exits with Not logged in. Run: commonly login when no saved login exists. The agent init path used by the Python bot has the same guard. The install and login commands appear only later, under "Keep it running on a computer."
