TASK-026: hosted agent replies to a thread mention land at the pod root.

  • Cause: the native turn kept the trigger's messageId for credit but not its thread. Every post the turn made (commonly_post_message, the fallback reply, the failed-run line, the offer cards) was sent with no threadRootId.
  • Fix: threadRootOfTrigger() reads threadRootId/thread_root_id from the trigger payload (the mention payload writes it, agentMentionService). It rides on the dispatch context as answeringThreadRootId, and all five turn post sites pass it. A top-level trigger has no root, so it still answers at the pod root.
  • Tests: nativeRuntimeService.threadRoot.test.js (4 cases). Full nativeRuntimeService suite: 16 files, 223/223 on Node 22.
  • Not covered: no test asserts the threadRootId reaches postMessage. The wiring is checked by reading the diff. A service-tier test would close that.

Walkthrough

Agent mention events now include a valid thread root when available. Native-runtime dispatch extracts the root from trigger payloads and passes it to message-posting paths. Top-level triggers pass null.

Changes: Thread root propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add thread roots to mention events
backend/services/agentMentionService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentMentionService.threadRootOnMentions.test.js
enqueueMentions includes a valid threadRootId in adjacent-reply, direct-mention, auto-join, alias-routed, and implicit-reply events. Tests cover thread-sourced, chat-sourced, implicit reply-edge, and top-level mentions.
Parse and retain the trigger thread root
backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.threadRoot.test.js
threadRootOfTrigger accepts camelCase and snake_case fields and returns a positive integer or undefined. DispatchContext stores the parsed root separately from answeringMessageId. Tests cover supported field names and invalid values.
Pass the root to native message posts
backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.threadRoot.test.js
The commonly-post-message, hosted-agent offer, local-agent handoff, fallback reply, and failed-run notice paths pass the trigger thread root to message storage. They pass null when no root is available. Tests cover threaded and top-level tool posts, fallback posts, hosted-agent offers, BYO approval cards, and failed-run notices.

Pass the thread root to approval-card posts.

A threaded turn that calls commonly_propose_action does not pass its thread root to the approval card. The card then posts at the pod root, outside the thread the turn answers. Carry the root through proposeAction into its postMessage call.

Reject boolean thread roots before numeric conversion.

When dev routes are enabled, POST /api/dev/agents/events accepts an arbitrary payload. A payload such as { "threadRootId": true } can reach a native trigger. Number(true) becomes 1, so threadRootOfTrigger treats the invalid value as message ID 1. The reply can enter thread 1 when that message is a valid root, or fail resolveThreadRoot validation instead of using the pod-root fallback. Validate the raw value before conversion and accept only a positive integer or validated decimal string.

Opus gate at 2802801: HOLD. The fix doesn't reach the path the task is about.

Defect: the chat.mention payload carries no thread root, so threadRootOfTrigger returns undefined for a mention inside a thread. The change only works when the trigger payload carries threadRootId or thread_root_id. Here are the payload builders in agentMentionService.ts at this head:

  • message.posted (the ambient / D8 path, around line 1541) spreads ...(threadRootId ? { threadRootId } : {}). That is the only builder that does.
  • Every chat.mention / thread.mention builder omits it: the adjacent reply around 1709, the direct match around 1969, the alias paths around 2020 and 2094, and the ones around 2165 and 2451. They carry messageId, content, createdAt and thread: message?.thread, and none of them carries the root.
  • AgentEventService.enqueue doesn't add it either. Its only threadRootId read is the ambient digest label.

So a hosted agent @-mentioned inside a thread wakes on a chat.mention with no root. answeringThreadRootId comes out undefined, and every post still goes to threadRootId: null, which is the pod root and the TASK-026 symptom. Only an ambient message.posted wake in a thread gets placed correctly. The test comment says "camelCase, as the mention payload writes it", but no mention builder writes it.

Fix, author's call: add ...(resolveThreadRootId(message) ? { threadRootId: … } : {}) to each mention payload builder. Then add a test that runs enqueueMentions on a threaded message with a native install @-mentioned, feeds the queued event into runAgent (or threadRootOfTrigger(event.payload)), and asserts that the post carries the root. The current suite only exercises the helper on hand-built payloads, so it's green on the bug.

The rest checks out:

  • Every post site in nativeRuntimeService passes the root, including the tool post, the hosted-offer card, the kernel card, the fallback and the run-failed post.
  • The native tool doesn't accept a model-supplied threadRootId, so nothing is overridden.
  • threadRootOfTrigger validates the id.

CodeRabbit: the coderabbit-threads check shows 1 unanswered thread at this head.

Assert threadRootId on every changed enqueue path.

The existing threaded reply-edge test already reaches the implicit-reply branch. Extend it to assert payload.threadRootId instead of adding a duplicate case.

Add one threaded auto-join alias test and one threaded alias-routed test with multiple installations. Assert payload.threadRootId on every queued event.

Gate review (Sable, code and tests) at 2802801.

Checked:

  • threadRootOfTrigger unit tests pass (4/4). The existing nativeRuntime, agentMention, agentEvent and hosted unit suites pass when run serially. The failures I saw under parallel load were timeouts that pass alone.
  • All five post sites in nativeRuntimeService.ts (tool post, hosted offer, kernel post, fallback, run-failed) now carry threadRootId from the trigger.

Defect (blocks the gate): an explicit mention inside a thread still answers at the pod root.

  • An explicit mention is enqueued by enqueueMentions, direct-match branch, backend/services/agentMentionService.ts:1964. That chat.mention payload has no threadRootId.
  • The only thread-aware payload is the ambient fan-out in enqueueWakeOnMessage (:1543). That fan-out is called with excludeKeys: enqueuedIdentityKeys (:2215), so the directly mentioned agent is excluded and never gets that payload.
  • runAgent reads answeringThreadRootId only from trigger.payload through threadRootOfTrigger, so the turn posts with threadRootId: null.
  • Reproduced with the existing threadScoping fixture: send({ content: '@seat-a look at this', thread_root_id: 101 }) enqueues chat.mention for seat-a with payload.threadRootId === undefined. An assertion of toBe(101) fails. The scratch test was not committed.

The same gap is on the other enqueueMentions enqueue sites that carry no threadRootId: :1704, :1726 (adjacent), :2015 (auto-joined target), :2089 (agent-type match), and the reply-edge implicit path :2160. The threadRootId const is declared at :2127, after the direct-match site, so it must be hoisted to the top of enqueueMentions before those payloads can use it.

Fix direction: add ...(threadRootId ? { threadRootId } : {}) to each of those payloads and hoist the declaration. Add a test that asserts payload.threadRootId on the chat.mention for an in-thread explicit mention, and one for the reply-edge path. The helper tests cannot catch this because none of them inspect the enqueue payload.

Also: the coderabbit-threads status is FAILURE on this head. Answer the open threads per the external-review rule before the re-gate.

Re-gate on a new head.

Sable's HOLD on #2811: the in-thread implicit-reply enqueue had no

Head is now 816a69d. Changes since a25bb48:

  • 673deb4: a reply-edge test. A human reply inside a thread to a hosted agent's message asserts payload.threadRootId on the implicit chat.mention. Removing that spread from the reply-edge enqueue fails it.
  • 816a69d: answers CodeRabbit's Major on discussion_r4376391852. The runAgent tests drive a threaded trigger through the tool post and the fallback post, and a top-level trigger through the tool post. Dropping the threadRootId argument from the tool post fails 2 tests, and from the fallback post fails 1.

Fixes from Sable's HOLD at 2802801 are the a25bb48 commit: all five enqueueMentions payloads carry the root, and the const is hoisted.

Verified locally on Node 22: threadRoot, threadRootOnMentions, hostedOffer, byoHandoff, and 14 agentMention suites (205 tests).

Re-gate (Sable, code and tests) at 816a69d.

The earlier HOLD was a missing threadRootId on the explicit-mention enqueue sites. At this head, all five AgentEventService.enqueue calls in enqueueMentions carry ...(threadRootId ? { threadRootId } : {}): adjacent, direct match, auto-joined, agent-type, and reply-edge. The const is hoisted to the top of the function, so the references are in scope.

Checked:

  • agentMentionService.threadRootOnMentions.test.js 4/4 and nativeRuntimeService.threadRoot.test.js 7/7 pass.
  • Mutation: removing the direct-match payload line fails 2 tests (thread.mention and chat-sourced). Removing the reply-edge line fails the reply-edge test. Removing the tool-post line fails 2 tests. Removing the fallback-post line fails the fallback test.
  • The mention and native-runtime unit suites pass serially: 31 suites, 447 tests.

Residual, not blocking. These lines are present and in scope, but no test fails when they are removed:

  • agentMentionService.ts adjacent (about :1727), auto-joined (about :2038) and agent-type (about :2113) enqueues.
  • nativeRuntimeService.ts hosted-offer post (about :907), kernel post (about :957) and run-failed post (about :2424).

CI: the Stale-base merge guard check is FAILURE on this head. It needs a rebase or merge of main before the press; it is not a code finding.

No defects found in the code.

Assert threadRootId on the adjacent-reply enqueue.

The adjacent-reply branch adds threadRootId to its chat.mention payload. No test asserts that field on this branch. Add a threaded adjacent-reply case that asserts payload.threadRootId on the emitted event. Reuse the existing adjacent-reply fixture and add a thread root, so that removing the spread at backend/services/agentMentionService.ts:1727 fails the new assertion.

The native turn carried the trigger's messageId for credit but not its thread,
so every post a hosted turn made (commonly_post_message, the fallback reply, the
failed-run line, and the offer cards) was written at the pod root even when the
mention was inside a thread. The trigger's thread root now rides on the turn
context and every post from the turn passes it as threadRootId. A top-level
trigger still has no root and answers at the pod root.

The chat.mention and thread.mention builders in enqueueMentions omitted
threadRootId, so a hosted agent @-mentioned inside a thread woke without
the root and its reply posted at the pod root. Only the ambient
message.posted path carried it. Hoist the thread root to the top of
enqueueMentions and stamp it on all five mention payloads.

Sable's HOLD on #2811: the in-thread implicit-reply enqueue had no
assertion on payload.threadRootId, so removing it passed the suite.
Add a human reply inside a thread to a hosted agent's message and
assert the implicit chat.mention carries the thread root. Verified:
removing the reply-edge spread fails the new test.

CodeRabbit (Major, discussion_r4376391852): the threadRootOfTrigger
tests still pass if every threadRootId argument to postMessage is
removed. Add runAgent tests: a threaded trigger's tool post and fallback
post pass the root, and a top-level tool post passes null. Mutation
check: dropping the threadRootId argument from the tool post fails 2
tests, from the fallback post fails 1.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add assertions for both offer post paths.

nativeRuntimeService.hostedOffer.test.js and nativeRuntimeService.byoHandoff.test.js do not assert threadRootId. Add threaded assertions expecting the root ID and top-level assertions expecting null for both AgentMessageService.postMessage calls.

These assertions inspect the mocked call argument. Removing the property leaves it absent (undefined) in mock.calls; the implementation’s destructuring default does not change the object recorded by the mock. The existing threaded tests cover only the tool and fallback posts.

Preserve the thread root for approval cards.

proposeAction does not derive thread placement from runId. It calls AgentMessageService.postMessage, which requires an explicit threadRootId and defaults it to null. Pass ctx.answeringThreadRootId ?? null through proposeAction and add a threaded regression test.

Re-stamp of my PASS at 816a69d (TASK-026) against head 8512702.

Rebase check. The four PR files have the same +/- lines at 816a69d and at head. The PR-only patch against each base is 450 lines in both, identical. The base moved, and nativeRuntimeService.ts now also carries main's own changes (servedModelOf, the messageRepository read path). Those are not in this PR.

Fails without the fix. I reverted the two source files to origin/main and kept both new test files. Node 22, as CI pins:

  • With the fix: 11/11 pass.
  • Without the fix: 10 fail. The one that passes is "a top-level mention carries no threadRootId key", which is expected.
  • Five of the failures are threadRootOfTrigger is not a function, which proves only that the export is missing. The mention and post-argument assertions (payload.threadRootId 101, postMessage threadRootId 4, and the top-level null) are the ones that prove the behaviour.

Coverage gap. threadRootId is now set on five post sites in nativeRuntimeService.ts: the tool post, the hosted-offer starts card, the approval card, the fallback reply, and the failed-run notice. The tests assert the tool post, the fallback post, and the top-level null. Reverting the three lines for the hosted-offer card, the approval card, or the failed-run notice still passes CI. These tests should exist, or the thread reply should decline them with a reason:

  • runAgent: a hosted-offer card in a thread carries the thread root.
  • runAgent: an approval card in a thread carries the thread root.
  • runAgent: a failed-run notice in a thread carries the thread root.

Open thread. CodeRabbit's inline comment 4376391852 (on the test file, "test the trigger-to-post handoff") has no reply in its thread. The tests at head 8512702 now cover what it asks for. Under the team rule it needs an in-thread reply that names the commit. An unanswered thread at head is a hold.

Verdict: the fix is unchanged by the rebase, and the tests fail without it. The hold is for two items: the in-thread reply, and either the three coverage tests above or a declined reason in that reply.

Three runAgent cases with a thread-mention trigger: the hosted-offer starts
card, the BYO approval card and the failed-run notice each assert their
threadRootId. Reverting any one threadRootId argument fails its test.

Add top-level cases for the three distinct posting paths.

The hosted-offer and BYO branches use separate postMessage calls, and the failed-run notice uses another. runAgent supplies undefined for a top-level trigger, which each path converts to null. The current top-level test selects only commonly_post_message.

Add a top-level case for the hosted-offer, BYO approval, and failed-run paths. Assert threadRootId is null at each posting call. This is a proportional test-coverage refactor, not a production defect.

Re-stamp at head caec092.

  • The earlier coverage hold is met. The three new runAgent tests (L149, L161, L173) assert the thread root at the hosted starts card (L907), the BYO approval card (L957) and the runFailed notice (L2430). Checked by reading the diff, not by running the suite.
  • CodeRabbit thread 4376391852 has a reply at 4391429780 that names the tests at L102/L113/L124 and L149/L161/L173, so the thread is answered.
  • CI: 28 checks, none red.
  • No defect found.

Opus code gate, #2811 at caec092. This replaces my HOLD at 2802801 (5664621945). CI is green and CodeRabbit is resolved.

(1) End to end: yes. My defect was that no chat.mention / thread.mention builder carried the root, so a hosted agent @-mentioned in a thread woke with none. That is fixed.

  • enqueueMentions resolves threadRootId once (agentMentionService.ts:1582). It spreads ...(threadRootId ? { threadRootId } : {}) into the adjacent-reply (:1727), direct-match (:1986), auto-join alias (:2038), alias (:2113) and reply-edge (:2188) builders.
  • The hoist from the old :2132 position is safe, because nothing between the two positions reads or shadows the name.
  • AgentEventService passes the payload through to the native runtime intact: runAgent(nativeInstallation, { type, eventId, payload }) at agentEventService.ts:1707, where payload is event.payload or a spread of it.
  • runAgent sets answeringThreadRootId: threadRootOfTrigger(trigger.payload), and all five post sites (tool post, hosted-offer card, kernel card, fallback, run-failed) pass threadRootId: … ?? null. A top-level mention carries no key, so its answer stays at the pod root.

I ran both new files locally: 14/14 pass. With only agentMentionService.ts reverted to main, the mention suite fails 3 of 4: the three threaded cases fail, and the top-level no-key case still passes. So the tests do drive the real enqueueMentions path, and they fail without the fix.

(2) DM builder (enqueueDmEvent, around :2455): no threadRootId, and that is out of scope for TASK-026. My ruling:

  • TASK-026 is about a thread mention in a shared pod reaching the root, where other members lose the context. A DM pod has exactly two members (DM_POD_TYPES_GUARD), so a reply at the DM root is still in front of the only other reader.
  • The DM path is a separate builder with its own frame.
  • If threaded DMs should keep their thread, that is a small follow-up row: add the same spread to that builder, plus one test. It does not block this PR.

Non-blocking: the adjacent-reply (:1727) and both alias builders (:2038, :2113) have no direct test. The edit there is the same one-line spread as the tested sites, so a single parametrised case would cover them.
