Walkthrough
The backend adds a GitLab.com hosted MCP entry with read and write tool schemas, registers it in the hosted MCP catalogue, and tests its settings and tools. The frontend adds a GitLab platform glyph and a rendering test.
Changes: GitLab Hosted MCP
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Entry registration and core tool definitions backend/integrations/hostedMcp/gitlab.ts, backend/integrations/hostedMcp/entries.ts
The GitLab entry defines connection metadata and tool schemas. The hosted MCP catalogue includes the entry.
The entry defines read-only listing schemas for commits, merge requests, projects, repository trees, work items, pipelines, and branches, with filters and pagination options.
Write tools and entry tests backend/integrations/hostedMcp/gitlab.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/hostedMcpEntry.test.js
The entry defines write-tool schemas with input constraints. Tests check catalogue ordering, connection settings, selected tools, schema and annotation matches, and descriptions.
GitLab Platform Glyph
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Glyph component, registration, and test frontend/src/v2/icons/platforms/index.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/platformGlyphCatalogue.test.tsx
The platform glyph catalogue adds a GitLab SVG glyph under the gitlab key. A test checks its size, color, path, and lack of a circle.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2649: This PR changes visibility and connect access for hidden hosted-MCP entries, including the GitLab entry.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1bf0d
The GitLab MCP entry and platform glyph are consistent with the repository contracts, with no actionable merge risk remaining.

Fix the get_user description: it says less than the tool can do.
The description says 'Read the connected GitLab user.' The pinned schema accepts username and id, so the tool can look up any GitLab user. me is optional, and required is empty. The upstream text for me says that false behaves as if me was omitted.
This description reaches the seat's prompt and the person's screen. The model is told the tool is limited to the connected account, but it can look up other users by name or ID. The review checklist says a newly exposed tool's description must match the handler's actual scoping and behavior.
Change the description so that it covers both modes.
Proposed fix
- description: 'Read the connected GitLab user.',+ description: 'Read a GitLab user by username or ID, or the connected user.',
As per path instructions: "confirm its description matches the handler's actual scoping and behavior".

Tier 1 exact-head gate, #2833 at 9ad8fe7 (TASK-246, GitLab.com), draft.
What I checked:
hostedMcpEntry.test.js on Node 22: 50/50 pass. The GitLab pin has 21 tools, and the test checks each against the 2026-10-19 capture.
Frontend platformGlyphCatalogue and V2ConnectorsPage: 102/102 pass.
Mutants: removing the registration line fails 2 tests. Flipping the first explicit irreversible floor (irreversible: true to false) fails 1 test. The class flip trips the load-time guard in the entry service, which fails the suite.
The auth shape is DCR with scope mcp, and the resource and issuer are gitlab.com. The entry is registered and the diff contains only this entry.
Limitation: the fixture is the 2026-10-19 capture supplied by connector-ops. I did not re-check it against the live server.

Connector-lane gate (locale and UI strings) at 9ad8fe7. Sable holds the code gate.
The diff adds no locale keys. The visible copy is title: 'GitLab' and "Projects, issues and merge requests on GitLab.com." That matches the resource (gitlab.com/api/v4/mcp only, no self-managed host), so the description doesn't promise self-managed GitLab.
The glyph is the Simple Icons GitLab mark (CC0), in ink, following the Atlassian/Airtable/Sentry precedent. A dedicated catalogue case pins its path.
Visibility: gitlab is in the live backend's HOSTED_MCP_HIDDEN_ENTRIES, so the entry stays hidden until its walk.
Same 6 files. gitlab.ts, the GitLab fixture and the glyph catalogue test are byte-identical to 9ad8fe7.
entries.ts and icons/platforms/index.tsx add the same lines as before, now beside Notion's. Notion's lines are kept.
hostedMcpEntry.test.js adds the same GitLab test and fixture require. The only drop is the title rename, which main already carries from #2832.
Merges clean onto main 942e743, and main's 4 newer commits touch none of these paths. The entry suite is 51/51 locally at this head.
Why HOLD
CodeRabbit's body item on backend/integrations/hostedMcp/gitlab.ts (review at 9ad8fe7) has no answer, and gitlab.ts is unchanged, so it still applies. It's also true. get_user (gitlab.ts:585-587) says "Read the connected GitLab user." The pinned upstream schema in gitlab-tools-list-2026-10-19.json takes username, id or me, with required: [], and the upstream text is "Get a single GitLab user… Provide exactly one of username, id, or me." So the tool can look up any GitLab user, and the description tells the model and the person it's limited to the connected account. Either fix the description so it covers both modes, or reply not fixing: <reason> on the PR. I missed this in my strings gate at 9ad8fe7.
CI was 13 pass, 7 pending, 0 fail when I filed. The next head gets a full re-gate, CI included.
The count and schema checks do not ensure that the intended read tools remain in the catalogue. For example, replacing get_job with the captured get_artifact_file pin would satisfy these checks. (raw.githubusercontent.com) Assert the complete expected tool-name set.
As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it.”

Update the test around `entry.tools` to assert the complete expected set of tool

checking the count and schemas.

… only the connected account
The pinned upstream schema takes username, id or me, so the tool looks up any
GitLab user. The description said "the connected GitLab user", which told the
model it could only read the authenticated account. Vera's HOLD at ae1b679
named this.

@vera, the get_user item from your HOLD at ae1b679 is fixed at b96c68e (one commit on top of ae1b679, fast-forward).
The description is now "Get a GitLab user by username or numeric id, or the connected account with me. Provide exactly one of username, id, or me." It matches the pinned schema, and nothing else changed.
Checks at b96c68e: hostedMcpEntry 51/51. eslint on gitlab.ts shows 0 errors (only the existing max-len warnings in the pinned file).
The GitLab pin test asserted 21 tools and the write subset but not which
21 names shipped. A renamed or swapped tool could pass the count check.
Assert the sorted name set so any change to the catalogue fails here.

Re-gate at 1bf0daa, which fast-forwards ae1b679 by two commits.
b96c68e: get_user now reads "Get a GitLab user by username or numeric id, or the connected account with me. Provide exactly one of username, id, or me." That matches the pinned schema (username, id, me, required: []) and the upstream text. It clears my HOLD at ae1b679 and CodeRabbit's item at 9ad8fe7. rhea answered it on the PR.
1bf0daa: the GitLab pin test asserts the full sorted 21-name set. That answers CodeRabbit's second item (review 5677531603 at ae1b679), which asked for exactly this. A mutation renaming get_user (name and upstreamName) reddens this test at the new assertion (hostedMcpEntry.test.js:1045), so it catches a swapped tool the count alone would miss.
Nothing else moved. The diff since ae1b679 is these 2 files, +8/-1.
The entry suite is 51/51 locally at this head. CI is 20 pass, 3 skipping, 0 fail. It merges clean onto main, and the 4 newer main commits don't touch these paths. CodeRabbit hasn't reviewed this head yet, so I'll re-check if it posts items here.

Re-stamp at 1bf0daa, delta since my PASS at 9ad8fe7 only.
Rebase (ae1b679): the range-diff against 9ad8fe7 is patch-identical except where main gained Notion. The catalogue order is now ... sentry, notion, gitlab in entries.ts, and the test and platform glyph map follow it. That's a correct conflict resolution, and nothing else in the patch changed.
b96c68e: the get_user description now covers all three lookup modes, and it matches the pinned inputSchema (username, id, me, required: [], gitlab.ts:584-606). This clears vera's HOLD at ae1b679.
1bf0daa: the pin test asserts the sorted 21-name set. When I renamed get_user in the expected list, exactly that test failed (1 failed, 50 passed). The count alone wouldn't catch a swapped tool.
hostedMcpEntry.test.js is 51/51 under Node 22 at this head. CI has no failures (the Latchkey and release-guard jobs skip). No defect found.

Split from #2429 (combined Notion, GitLab.com and Supabase) so each entry gates and ships on its own. Supersedes #2429 once this lands.
