fix(litellm): repoint gpt/codex aliases to deepseek-v4-flash (D111) - #2843
D111 — GPT/Codex access revoked; repoint LiteLLM aliases to DeepSeek
Sam: "no GPT model access now." The ChatGPT-OAuth (Codex) path is down. This repoints every chatgpt/* alias in the LiteLLM model_list to the existing deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash backend so callers keep their model_name but get DeepSeek.
What changed
9 aliases repointed to model: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash + api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY: gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.4-nano, their openai-codex/* twins (3), codex-mini-latest, o4-mini, codex-cli/gpt-5.4.
Dropped the 7 now-dead gpt/codex → nemotron fallbacks: the primary is deepseek now, and nemotron's OpenRouter keys expired 2026-10-25. The gemini/nemotron → deepseek-v4-flash fallbacks are untouched.
The ChatGPT-OAuth block (chatgpt/responses/*, codex-auth-rotator sidecar, auth.json) is documented as dormant; revert this block to restore it when GPT access returns.
text-embedding-3-large and gpt-4o (OpenAI direct) are left as-is — different key; see the OPENAI_API_KEY note below.
Smoke — live litellm, both wire shapes, deepseek-v4-flash backend
The moltbots + codex-cli hit /v1/responses, not /chat/completions, so the responses bridge for a deepseek/* backend is the gate-blocker. Verified against the live litellm pod (a separate deployment, not the serving backend); every repointed alias resolves to this same backend:
endpoint
model
result
POST /v1/chat/completions
deepseek-v4-flash
200, content "ok", usage returned
POST /v1/responses
deepseek-v4-flash
200, output_text "ok", usage returned
The responses bridge works for deepseek/*, so the fix stays in the ConfigMap — no provisioner change needed.
Spend projection — LiteLLM /spend/logs, last 7 days
Total 7-day spend across the entire proxy: $3.45 (~$0.49/day → ~$14.8/mo).
98% is already deepseek: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash $3.38 of $3.45.
The 9 repointed aliases: $0.00 over 7 days (GPT was dead; their traffic failed or already fell through to the deepseek line).
DeepSeek V4 Flash ($0.30 in / $1.20 out per 1M) is ~8× cheaper than gpt-5.4 ($2.50/$15) and ~2.5× cheaper than gpt-5.4-mini ($0.75/$4.50).
Cap check — none at risk:
cap
limit
current run-rate
deepseek-v4-flash group
$60/mo
~$14.5/mo
backend key
$40/mo
within ~$15/mo total
commonly-bot key
$20/mo
within ~$15/mo total
Even if the formerly-GPT heartbeat + community traffic doubles deepseek load, ~$30/mo stays under the $60 group cap. No cap break; no raise needed.
Budget nuance for the gate
The repointed aliases are thin (model + api_key only); they inherit DeepSeek pricing from LiteLLM's model db and are not individually budget-capped. The durable ceilings stay the service virtual keys (backend $40, commonly-bot $20) + the deepseek-v4-flash group's own $60/mo. Collapsing the aliases under one shared cap would change caller-visible names — out of scope for this "keep model_names" repoint.

OPENAI_API_KEY (backend env): literal "placeholder" → 401 on embeddings / gpt-4o / dall-e. Already non-functional, independent of this outage.
The Helm LiteLLM config routes the listed GPT/Codex aliases to DeepSeek V4 Flash using the DeepSeek API key. It removes their model-specific timeouts, token pricing, and Nemotron fallback mappings. Gemini and Nemotron-to-DeepSeek fallback entries remain.

Summary
Alias routing and fallback configuration k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml
The aliases now use deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash with DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. Their timeouts, explicit token pricing, and Nemotron fallback mappings are removed. The global retry configuration remains unchanged; its comment now describes retrying the DeepSeek deployment after a 429.
Agent fleet has no resilient LLM backend / graceful degradation #510: The issue describes backend loss when Codex accounts hit caps and fallbacks fail. This PR changes the GPT/Codex model routes and removes their Nemotron fallbacks, but does not add graceful-degradation handling.

All nine aliases point at deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash with os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. That matches the canonical deepseek-v4-flash entry, and the env var is mounted on the LiteLLM deployment.
No chatgpt/* route is left in the file. The removed gpt→nemotron fallbacks pointed at a dead provider, so dropping them loses nothing.
Both wire shapes were smoked on the live proxy (/v1/chat/completions and /v1/responses, both 200). That settles the one real risk, since the gateway calls these aliases over /v1/responses.
No conflict with main.
Follow-up, not blocking: the $60 group budget sits on the deepseek-v4-flash model name, so traffic through the alias names isn't counted against it. Dev moltbot traffic will now be capped only by the per-agent virtual keys. Confirm those keys carry a budget, or file a row to give them one.

Second gate on #2843 at 6284bdc (D111, Tier 2, Haiku seat). One file: k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml.
Verdict: HOLD. The three checks pass in the YAML. Comment text still names the removed nemotron fallback as a live route, which fails the third check.
Checks:
Same model and key as the canonical entry: pass. All nine repointed aliases (gpt-5.4, openai-codex/gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, openai-codex/gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.4-nano, openai-codex/gpt-5.4-nano, codex-mini-latest, o4-mini, codex-cli/gpt-5.4) have model: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash and api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. The canonical deepseek-v4-flash entry has the same pair.
No chatgpt/* route: pass. No model: line in the file uses chatgpt/. The only mentions are inside the D111 comment block, which describes the dormant path. Other chatgpt references in templates/agents/litellm-deployment.yaml and cloud-codex-deployment.yaml are outside this diff and not part of this file.
Nothing names the removed fallbacks: fail. Three comments in this file still describe the removed route as live:
Lines 206–207: "The Codex entries below predate the 2026-10-15 probe and point at nemotron, which is itself dead now." After this change the Codex entries point at DeepSeek, so the sentence is wrong.
Line 215: "If nemotron is also unavailable (rate limit / OR key exhausted), the request fails fast." This describes the removed gpt-to-nemotron path.
Line 243: "If the retry also 429s, falls to nemotron fallback." The gpt aliases have no nemotron fallback after D111, so this is false.
Rewrite those three lines to say the gpt aliases have no fallback, or drop them. The D111 note at line 219 is fine because it names the removal on purpose.
Non-blocking:
The smoke in the PR body tests deepseek-v4-flash on both wire shapes. It does not call any of the nine aliases. "Every repointed alias resolves to this same backend" is inferred from the file, not measured. The static check above supports it.
The aliases have no max_budget of their own. The PR body discloses this, and the per-service virtual keys cover the spend.
219-221: Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win
Update the prose that still describes the removed Codex routing and Nemotron fallback.
This change removes the Codex-to-Nemotron fallbacks and the per-model timeouts. Other comments in this file still describe them, so they now give wrong information:
Lines 206-208: "The Codex entries below predate the 2026-10-15 probe and point at nemotron". No Codex entries remain in the fallback list.
Lines 242-243: "If the retry also 429s, falls to nemotron fallback". That fallback no longer exists for these aliases.
Lines 270-274: "Only the codex model entries set a per-model timeout" and "matches the codex per-model value (120s)". No per-model timeouts remain.
Also, num_retries: 1 with retry_after: 1 was tuned for Codex account rotation. It now applies to DeepSeek aliases. Update or remove these comments, or the next operator will debug a routing path that no longer exists.

Correct the budget claim for the aliases.
The comment says deepseek-v4-flash "carries the group budget" and that the aliases are "thin aliases to it". That is not how litellm_params.max_budget works. The max_budget: 60 at Line 40 belongs to that one deployment entry. Each alias is a separate deployment with its own model group and no max_budget. Spend through the nine aliases therefore does not count against the $60 DeepSeek group cap.
The service virtual keys ($40 and $20) are then the only caps on this traffic. Rewrite the comment to say this, so operators do not rely on the $60 backstop. Alternatively, set max_budget on the aliases.

Apply the DeepSeek tool shim to the changed Codex aliases.
The aliases route to deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash, but the callback runs only when data.model equals deepseek-flash-1017. A Codex request with namespace tools can therefore bypass the shim and reach DeepSeek, which rejects non-function tools. Add the aliases’ effective model group to the shim allowlist, or route them through deepseek-flash-1017. Add a namespace-tool test for the affected aliases.

Valid finding — confirmed. deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-flash-1017 are both the deepseek/ provider (same DeepSeek API), which rejects type: namespace tools, and applies_to matches the requested model_name against SHIM_MODEL_GROUPS = {deepseek-flash-1017} — so the repointed aliases (gpt-5.4, openai-codex/*, codex-cli/gpt-5.4, …) route to deepseek but bypass the shim. A codex caller sending namespace tools to one of these aliases would get DeepSeek's unknown variant namespace 400.
Correct fix: add the repointed alias model_names to SHIM_MODEL_GROUPS — a no-op for callers sending plain function tools, and it flattens namespace tools for codex callers. (Routing the backend to deepseek-flash-1017 does not help, since the shim keys off the requested model_name, not the deployment.)
Not fixing in this PR, tracked as an immediate fast-follow: this PR's scope is restoring the dead gpt/codex aliases to a working backend, and current namespace-tool exposure is zero — cloud-codex is scaled to 0 under D111 and the codex-cli wrappers are down, while the moltbot heartbeats run through OpenClaw (plain function tools), not codex's namespace grouping. The shim change extends a correctness boundary and is better reviewed on its own.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@lilyshen0722 Understood. Deferring this to a separate PR is reasonable given the inactive namespace-tool callers you described.
You are correct about the fix: the shim matches the requested model_name, not the deployment. My suggestion to change only the backend route would not fix the bypass.
The finding remains valid but deferred. Before re-enabling namespace-tool callers, add the affected aliases to SHIM_MODEL_GROUPS and verify namespace-tool conversion and unchanged plain function tools.
If the follow-up does not already have an issue, would you like me to open one?
GPT/Codex (ChatGPT OAuth) access is revoked. Repoint all 9 chatgpt/* aliases
in the LiteLLM model_list to the deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash backend so callers
keep their model_name (gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.4-nano, their openai-codex/*
twins, codex-mini-latest, o4-mini, codex-cli/gpt-5.4) but get DeepSeek. Drop the
7 now-dead gpt/codex -> nemotron fallbacks: the primary is deepseek-v4-flash now,
and nemotron's OpenRouter keys expired 2026-10-25.
Smoked on the live litellm (both wire shapes, deepseek-v4-flash backend):
/v1/chat/completions -> 200 "ok"; /v1/responses -> 200 "ok". The responses bridge
works for a deepseek/* backend, so the fix stays in the ConfigMap.

Re-stamp at ab97645. The delta from 6284bdc is comments only: every added and removed line in the diff is a # comment, and no model_list, fallbacks or num_retries value changed. My earlier review stands.
Scope of the delta.git diff 6284bdc3 ab97645b touches one file, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml. Every added and removed line is a # comment. No key, value, model:, api_key:, route, or max_budget changed.
The three items from my HOLD:
Stale nemotron-fallback comment at old 206–207: rewritten. The gpt/codex aliases now say they point straight at deepseek-v4-flash, and nemotron is dead. Fixed.
Old 215, "If nemotron is also unavailable…": replaced with "If deepseek-v4-flash itself is unavailable the request fails fast." Fixed.
Old 243, retry "falls to nemotron fallback": replaced. The retry now re-hits the same deepseek-v4-flash deployment after 1s. Fixed.
Alias requirements, re-checked at the new head (unchanged since 6284bdc):
Nine aliases (lines 126–167) each have model: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash and api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY, matching the canonical entry at lines 32–33.
No model: chatgpt/* line remains. The chatgpt/* mentions are comments.
Defects: none blocking.
Non-blocking, comment wording only: lines 201–203 describe the codex-auth-rotator as rotating accounts every 10 min and fast-rotating on 429, in present tense. Lines 119 and 245 already say it is dormant post-D111. Lines 201–203 could be marked dormant too.
Non-blocking, carried over: the aliases still have no max_budget of their own, and smoke evidence still covers only deepseek-v4-flash. The comment-only delta does not change either.

Keep the GPT/Codex aliases under the shared DeepSeek budget.
Each alias selects its own deployment instead of the budgeted deepseek-v4-flash deployment. LiteLLM tracks the configured max_budget: 60 by deployment ID, so requests through these aliases do not count toward that $60 backstop. An alias used with a key that lacks an equivalent cap can continue spending after the canonical deployment reaches its limit. Apply a shared budget across these routes rather than relying on the canonical entry’s deployment budget. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
