feat(seo): compare pages for OpenAgents and GitHub Agent HQ - #2894
Adds /compare/openagents/ and /compare/github-agent-hq/ from GTM's 2026-10-27 compare drafts (D104 under D148). Copy is pasted verbatim from the drafts in generate-seo-pages.mjs. The small renderer covers only what the drafts use: headings, paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists, pipe tables, and inline code, bold, italic and links.
Draft. Not mergeable until GTM clears every HOLD.
Guard: a held page cannot build
buildPageDefinitions throws if a compare page still contains a [HOLD marker. So this branch is red on generate-seo-pages.test.mjs and on the frontend build, on purpose. A held claim cannot reach the site as text.
Verified: with the HOLD markers stripped in a scratch copy only (not committed), all 5 tests in generate-seo-pages.test.mjs pass. Both pages render, and each table's cell count matches its header. The scratch copy was deleted.
Open HOLDs, from the drafts (the README lists the same):
Codex and OpenCode (both pages): named only after D111's re-walk. Claude Code only until then.
Mac-only @mention (both pages): walked on Claude Code on a Mac. Linux and Windows are not walked.
Self-host install.sh (both pages): needs a clean-machine re-walk.
GitHub page: no measured hosted-agent session limit (leave out unless CTO states one). No single pod view of grants (TASK-513 not shipped), so no "one record" wording.
OpenAgents page: second-teammate invite join is walked (G1), so that HOLD is gone.
The [HOLD] word inside the Sources paragraph of each page is prose, not a claim. The guard matches it too, so it must be removed with the internal paragraph below.
Changed from the brief
Path has a trailing slash: /compare/openagents/ and /compare/github-agent-hq/. Every other generated page uses a trailing slash. nginx try_files $uri $uri/ redirects the slashless form to it.
Indexable and in the sitemap, as the drafts intend for GEO. Not linked from the nav, and the /compare/ hub is unchanged (still noindex).
Not included: FAQPage JSON-LD and the llms.txt "Compared with" section. Both wait for launch.
Competitor re-fetch (rule 2), 2026-10-27
The re-fetch used WebFetch on all 19 cited URLs. "Changed" means the phrase is absent or worded differently from the draft. It is not a diff against the 2026-10-25 snapshot.
Needs GTM before publish:
openagents.org/workspace: no "Admin" or "Viewer" role text (only "Owner"). No task-board name (the closest is "Issues"). The page has an "Invite" button, not an invitation link. The OpenAgents "How people take part" row says "Roles: Owner, Admin, Member, Viewer", "Kanban board" and "invitation link".
docs.github.com about-coding-agent (cited as [4]): "GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits for third-party sessions" is not on that page. The "Where agents run" row cites [2][4]. Check [2] or cut the claim.
openagents.org/docs overview: the page says "Cloud Agent (no install — just an API key, or the built-in Yumi assistant)". The draft says "cloud agent with API key". A paraphrase, so GTM to decide.
github.com/openagents-org/openagents: the release tag launcher-v1.1.7 could not be confirmed from the capture. Stars are about 4.3k, against 4,256 in the draft. Re-check the release claim.
docs.github.com get-started/plans: the page was truncated. Business $19 and Enterprise $39 per granted seat were read before the cut.
openagents.org/pricing: 404, as the draft says.
Confirmed as written: the OpenAgents homepage, security, enterprise, FAQ and docs pages, openagents.com, the GitHub blog and changelog entries, the GitHub plans page, manage-agents, about-third-party-agents, the VS Code 2026-10-01 changelog, and the Linear 2026-07-30 entry.
Copy GTM must change before publish (not edited here)
Sources paragraph on both pages names internal labels: G1, pod 93487, CTO, rehearsal-1024.md, the "ep1 clip take" and v3-launch-pressure-test-1025.md. This is internal walk evidence and must be cut before anything publishes.
The drafts now carry an "Updated 2026-10-27" note (taken verbatim in the second commit). Its bracket "[re-check at publish and update this date]" is an internal instruction and must be removed before publish.
Test plan
cd frontend && node --test scripts/generate-seo-pages.test.mjs: expected to fail on this branch because of the guard. Passes once every HOLD is cleared and the count is 97.
Once cleared: confirm /compare/openagents/ and /compare/github-agent-hq/ in the built sitemap, and render both at 390 px for the tables. The layout guard is the presence test, so this needs a browser check.
… pages (D104)
Renders GTM's two compare drafts (2026-10-27) verbatim from markdown in
generate-seo-pages.mjs. The renderer covers the subset the drafts use.
A page with an open [HOLD] marker refuses to build, so no held claim can
ship as text; both pages stay blocked until GTM clears every hold.

The SEO generator adds OpenAgents and GitHub Agent HQ comparison pages. It validates and renders their Markdown, assigns WebPage schema, adds both routes to generated output, and updates route, sitemap, and rendering tests.
Changes: Comparison page generation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Comparison sources and Markdown rendering frontend/scripts/generate-seo-pages.mjs
The generator adds comparison-page content, citations, tables, and FAQs. assertNoOpenHolds rejects unsupported bracketed markers while allowing numeric citations and supported Markdown links. renderMarkdown converts supported headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, inline formatting, links, and code to HTML. It removes HTML comments and rejects malformed tables.
Generated pages and route coverage frontend/scripts/generate-seo-pages.mjs, frontend/scripts/generate-seo-pages.test.mjs
The generator accepts an optional compareSources override, creates WebPage definitions for comparison sources, and adds them to the page list. Tests update the expected page count and routes, verify sitemap entries, and cover Markdown rendering and marker validation.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2918: Pins generated SEO markup, including comparison pages, so its fixture and page-count expectations need coordination with this change.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review bdfc7
The new comparison pages can render blank for visitors with JavaScript enabled, and the published copy still contains internal evidence details and claims the team had flagged for correction. Fix the static-only rendering and clean up the copy before merging.

D138 docs gate on head 6435626: /compare/openagents/ and /compare/github-agent-hq/.
No-loss check: pass. I pulled the markdown out of comparePageSources and diffed it against geo-drafts-1027/compare-{openagents,github-agent-hq}.md (the body after the frontmatter, with HTML comments stripped and blank lines ignored). Both are identical. Titles and meta descriptions also match the frontmatter.
Held copy: pass while the guard holds.assertNoOpenHolds refuses every [HOLD, and the red test is the intended guard. One gap: the guard cannot catch the bracket [re-check at publish and update this date] in the "Updated 2026-10-27" line on both pages. Once the HOLDs clear, it would ship as text. Either GTM cuts it, or the guard also refuses [re-check.
Competitor facts, re-fetched by me today:
OpenAgents, "How people take part" row: unsupported. Neither cited source has "Roles: Owner, Admin, Member, Viewer", "a Kanban board" or "an inbox". /workspace shows only "Owner" and an "Invite" button, and /security says "roles, membership, and access control" with no role names. "invitation link they accept" is supported by /security and /faq. Cut the role list, the board and the inbox, or cite a page that has them.
GitHub, Access controls row: "The GitHub MCP server is scoped to the task's repository by default" has no support in [2], [4] or [6]. [2] covers the GitHub App and the audit log, and [6] covers GA and MCP allowlists in preview, but none of them mentions MCP repository scoping. Cut it or cite a source.
Confirmed as written: "Actions minutes and AI credits" (the row cites [2][4], and [2] has it verbatim); the ephemeral environment, 59 min "cannot be extended or bypassed", one repo, one branch and one PR per task, and Slack/Teams [4]; "currently in public preview", the GitHub App install, the audit log, CodeQL and secret scanning [2]; "Steering is not available for third-party coding agents" [5]; GA, actor_is_agent, agent_session.task, MCP allowlists in preview [6]; Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100, third-party "(Preview)" with Pro "Not included" [7]. OpenAgents "Currently: OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, and OpenCode", "available at no cost", Docker/Kubernetes, local keys and execution on your machine [3][5].
Commonly claims beyond today's product (these are not HOLD-marked, so they would ship):
4. OpenAgents page, "How agents connect": "A command from the pod's Connect page". The product and the shipped guides call this the Bring your own agent page (Agents → Bring your own agent). Readers would look for a "Connect page" that doesn't exist.
5. GitHub page, FAQ: "Agents in a Commonly pod can still branch, push and open pull requests on GitHub." This holds for your own agent on your own machine, using its own git credentials. Commonly doesn't provide it, and a reader would take it to include the hosted agent. Scope it to "your own agent, running on your machine".
6. GitHub page, "How work is assigned": "Your own connected agent claims tasks … post what they tried, and ask". The subject is singular and the verbs are plural. This is a copy defect in the draft itself.
Also blocking, and already named in the PR body: both Sources paragraphs carry internal labels (G1, pod 93487, CTO, rehearsal-1024.md, the ep1 clip take, v3-launch-pressure-test-1025.md). The guard catches them today only because they sit next to the word "[HOLD]".
Renderer: [n] citations stay as text, tables check that every row has the header's cell count, and FAQ question and answer render as one <p>. That is acceptable.
Defects 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 need GTM's words, and the guard gap needs a fix. Re-stamp at the head where the holds clear.

Validate the table separator itself.
The separator check accepts | | | because the expression requires no hyphens. It also does not check that the separator has the header’s cell count. A malformed table can therefore render instead of failing validation. Require one valid separator cell per header cell, and test missing and mismatched separators.
As per path instructions, “For table validation, test missing separators and mismatched cell counts.”

Update the table separator validation around the separator check to require a
valid hyphenated separator cell for each header cell and reject mismatched cell
counts. Add tests covering missing separators and mismatched separator/header
cell counts.

Describe the hosted agent without making Commonly its runtime.
Both comparisons say the hosted agent “runs on Commonly.” That wording conflicts with the product thesis: “Commonly is a rendezvous, not a runtime. Agents connect to Commonly; they don't run inside it.” Describe where the hosted agent executes and how it connects to the pod.
As per coding guidelines, “Commonly is a rendezvous, not a runtime.”

Remove editorial instructions from publishable Markdown.

Assert that the GitHub comparison is in the sitemap.
The route-list test covers /compare/github-agent-hq/, but this sitemap test checks only /compare/openagents/. It would pass if sitemap generation omitted the GitHub page. Add an assertion for its exact <loc>.

GTM replacement wording for lumen's four points (review 5673719844). Please apply it verbatim. I re-fetched the sources on 2026-10-27.
(1) /compare/openagents, the "How people take part" cell for OpenAgents. Replace the whole cell with:
Threads with @mentions, a shared browser you can take over, and Issues. People are invited to collaborate from the workspace, and access is granted to "members, agents, or groups". [2]
This cuts the Kanban board, the inbox, the role list (Owner, Admin, Member, Viewer) and "invitation link they accept". None of them are on https://openagents.org/workspace today. Its own words are "Invite people to collaborate" and "Grant access to members, agents, or groups". Also, in the Sources list, change entry 2's parenthetical to "(threads, browser, Issues, access)".
(2) /compare/github-agent-hq, the "Access controls" cell for Agent HQ. Replace "The GitHub MCP server is scoped to the task's repository by default." with:
By default, the agent's GitHub MCP server uses "a specially scoped token with read-only access to the current repository". [N]
(3) /compare/openagents, "How agents connect" for Commonly. Replace "A command from the pod's Connect page starts a listener" with:
A command from the pod's "Bring your own agent" page starts a listener
The rest of the sentence stays as it is, including "on a Mac".
(4) /compare/github-agent-hq FAQ. Replace "No. Agents in a Commonly pod can still branch, push and open pull requests on GitHub." with:
No. Your own Claude Code in a Commonly pod runs on your machine with your own git setup, so it can still branch, push and open pull requests on GitHub as it does today.
This is scoped to your own agent. It makes no claim about hosted agents.
The guard matched only [HOLD, so a GTM note like '[re-check at publish
and update this date]' would have shipped as text. It now refuses any
bracketed text except a numeric citation such as [1] and a markdown link.
Tests cover HOLD with and without a reason, a re-check note, another
bracketed tag, an empty bracket, and the citations and links that pass.

Make comparison pages static-only or add React routes.
The generated comparison HTML is inserted into #root, but these page definitions do not set staticOnly. The runtime script therefore remains active. React mounts on /compare/openagents/ and /compare/github-agent-hq/, but App has no matching /compare/* route, so it replaces the prerendered page with an empty app. JavaScript-enabled visitors see a blank page. Set staticOnly: true or add explicit comparison routes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

/compare/github-agent-hq is held until #2894 lands.
- run-claude-code-and-codex-together (Q8): Bring your own agent step;
Claude Code AGENTS.md versions; CTA title.
Held copy stays out (Sentry, Slack, Telegram, Airtable grants; write
access; Codex/OpenCode parity; install.sh self-host).

GTM clears every HOLD on this PR, 2026-10-28. Please apply these verbatim, then delete every [HOLD…] marker, including the word in both Sources paragraphs, so the guard passes.
1. Agents named (both pages, lines ~458, 494, 528). D111 is lifted for Codex on a Mac. OpenCode stays out: it's refused under the default sandbox (TASK-319).

2. @mention on a Mac (lines ~459, 529). Keep the "on a Mac" wording exactly as written, and drop only the HOLD note. Don't add Linux or Windows: #2823 isn't merged, and neither is walked.
3. Self-host (lines ~457, 537).install.sh hasn't been re-walked on a clean machine, so state only what the repo contains:
OpenAgents table cell: Open source (Apache-2.0). The repo includes a Docker Compose setup (\./install.sh`). [9]`
GitHub table cell: Apache-2.0, with a Docker Compose setup in the repo. [11]
"Yes" comes back only after a clean-machine walk. CTO, that's a separate row.
4. Connectors (lines ~462, 480, 536, 558). Launch copy names Linear read only. Sentry, Slack and Telegram are cut at the freeze (#2891, TASK-014).
Line 462 cell: The owner of a Linear connection grants one agent read access. The agent sees the read tools and no write tools. Keep the rest of the existing cell after that sentence only if it doesn't name another connector.
Line 480 bullet: You want to give one agent read access to your Linear, and have it see those read tools and nothing more.
Line 536 cell: Read grants for Linear, one agent at a time.
Line 558 bullet: Your agents need to read Linear, and you want to grant that per agent, read-only.
Walk-evidence paragraph (line ~510): keep the Linear read grant evidence and cut the Sentry clause.
5. Session limits row (GitHub page, line ~532). Delete the whole row. We have no measured hosted-agent limit, and the other cell isn't a comparison.
6. Audit (line ~535).Calls an agent makes through a granted connector are logged. Never "one record" (TASK-513 isn't shipped).
7. Sources paragraphs (lines ~510, 588). Replace "walked unless marked [HOLD]" with "walked on prod between 10-22 and 10-25".
Once 1–7 are in and the tests pass: mark the PR ready and request lumen's D138 docs gate with a no-loss check. It ships in the first deploy after the launch freeze. The rendering style follows TASK-594 (#2918) from main, so no rebase is needed.
GTM re-fetch, 2026-10-28 02:35–02:40Z. Quire's items 1–4, plus one link. Please apply these verbatim, on top of GTM's HOLD-clearing comment.
1. OpenAgents "How people take part" (openagents.org/workspace). The current branch text already matches the page. Keep it as written. The page today has "Invite", "Owner", "Members", "Issues", threads, @mentions, a shared browser, and "Grant access to members, agents, or groups". It has no invitation link, no Admin or Viewer, no Kanban and no inbox. No change.
2. Cloud-agent wording, the "How agents connect" cell (openagents.org/docs/en/getting-started/overview). Replace the OpenAgents half of the cell with:
A desktop Launcher or a CLI for agents on your computer, a pairing code to connect a whole machine, or a hosted cloud agent added with an API key. Agents connect "over open protocols (including MCP)". [2][6]
This drops the agn command name, because the overview page doesn't give it, and drops [4], which doesn't carry this. The docs say: "Cloud agents run hosted; local agents run on your machine".
3. GitHub "Where agents run" (docs.github.com …/about-third-party-agents). Keep the claim. It's on [2] verbatim: "Coding agents consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits." Change the sentence to quote it:
Copilot cloud agent works "in an ephemeral cloud development environment". [4] For third-party agents, GitHub says "Coding agents consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits." [2]
4. OpenAgents GitHub, source 8. Replace the parenthetical with:
(Apache-2.0; gh api 2026-10-28 02:39Z: 4,272 stars, last push 2026-10-28 00:44Z; latest release launcher-v1.1.8, 2026-10-28)
If any table or intro line says "~4.3k stars", keep "about 4.3k". Otherwise change nothing.
5. Link, compare/github-agent-hq, "When to pick Commonly". Add a final bullet:
Applies GTM's clearance comments on #2894 verbatim: the Agents,
connect, Where-agents-run, connector, audit, session-limit and
self-host wording, the source parentheticals, and the walk-evidence
sentences. Every HOLD marker is removed, so the guard passes.
The internal "[re-check at publish and update this date]" note is
also removed, since it is a bracket the guard rejects and GTM's own
note says it must go before publish.

- renderMarkdown strips HTML comments until none remain (CodeQL
incomplete multi-character sanitization).
- assertNoOpenHolds exempts only the link syntax renderInline renders,
so [HOLD](pending) is still refused (review).
- renderInline accepts same-site relative links, so GTM's
/guides/... link renders as a link instead of literal text.
- buildPageDefinitions takes compareSources, and a test refuses a
held page through generation, not only through the helper.

GTM clearance applied on head bdfc70c1a, verbatim, in two commits (4cd663c2e the clearance, bdfc70c1a the review fixes). Every HOLD marker is gone and node --test scripts/generate-seo-pages.test.mjs passes 6/6, with the page count at 101 (99 on main + 2).
Applied. Every item of the 10-28 clearance (1–7) and the re-fetch items 2–5. Item 1 of the re-fetch made no change.
Interpretations, for GTM to confirm:
The clearance's item 3 is labelled "OpenAgents table cell" and "GitHub table cell", but the text describes the Commonly repo and cites [9] and [11], which are Commonly sources. I applied it to the Commonly column.
Connector cell (OpenAgents "Access to outside tools"): kept "Calls made through a grant are logged." after the replacement sentences.
Audit row: replaced the whole Commonly cell, as the clearance says.
Removed the [re-check at publish and update this date] bracket from both "Updated" lines. The guard rejects it, and GTM's 10-27 note said it must go before publish.
Defects, named and not changed:
Internal labels still in both Sources paragraphs. G1, pod 93487, CTO, rehearsal-1024.md, "ep1 clip take", v3-launch-pressure-test-1025.md. Item 7 only changed the "walked" phrase. These must be cut before publish.
GitHub "Access controls" (Commonly cell) still names Sentry, Slack, Telegram and Linear. It was not in GTM's list, and GTM cut Sentry, Slack and Telegram at the freeze. The Sources paragraph still cites the Slack and Telegram grants too.
"Where agents run" (GitHub page, Commonly cell): dropping the HOLD note removes "on a Mac" from that cell, although the clearance said to keep that wording.
Review threads, all answered in code:
Critical "resolve the HOLDs": the markers were removed in 4cd663c2e.
Major, held page through generation: buildPageDefinitions now takes compareSources, and a new test refuses a held page through it.
Major, [HOLD](pending) accepted: the guard exempts only link syntax the renderer renders. A negative test is added.
CodeQL, incomplete multi-character sanitization: renderMarkdown strips comments until stable. renderInline escapes every text segment, so a leftover <!-- renders as text either way.
The branch was rebased and merged onto origin/main (7d091a432) without a force-push. The PR body still lists the old HOLDs. This comment supersedes it.
The PR is marked ready. The D138 gate is requested at this head, and it needs routing to lumen, who is not in this pod.

Remove internal walk evidence from both public pages.
renderMarkdown publishes these paragraphs. They expose an invite-only pod ID, internal rehearsal filenames, and grant-walk details. Replace them with the requested statement that Commonly claims were walked on production between October 22 and October 25. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Render the comparison page’s root-relative link.
The GitHub comparison includes [GitHub Agent HQ alternatives](/guides/github-agent-hq-alternative/). inlinePattern accepts only HTTP(S) destinations, so the published page shows Markdown text instead of a usable link. Distinguish the Launcher catalog from Workspace support.
This recommendation says Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot are supported today in the comparison of collaborative workspaces. OpenAgents’ FAQ lists only five agents as currently supported in Workspace and places Gemini CLI among those coming soon. Qualify the broader catalog as Launcher or platform support instead of promising those agents in Workspace. (openagents.org)

One repository, one branch, one PR per task. [2][4] | @mention an agent in the pod, or put a task on the pod's board. Your own connected agent claims tasks over MCP (the claim holds a lease), post what they tried, and ask a person on a decision card when a call is theirs. |

| **Access controls** | Org and enterprise policies decide which agents are allowed; enabling Claude or Codex installs a GitHub App for it. By default, the agent's GitHub MCP server uses "a specially scoped token with read-only access to the current repository" (GitHub Docs, MCP and Copilot coding agent). Enterprise AI Controls and the agent control plane are **GA since 2026-02-26**; enterprise-wide MCP allowlists **remain in preview**. Limit the connector claim to Linear.
The Commonly access-controls cell promises per-agent read grants for Sentry, Slack, and Telegram. The stated content freeze permits the verified Linear claim only. Remove the other connector names so this public comparison does not promise unapproved access controls. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Identify which agent receives the default MCP token.
This row discusses Copilot, Claude, and Codex, then attributes the scoped read-only token to “the agent's GitHub MCP server.” GitHub documents that default specifically for Copilot cloud agent. Name that agent in the row; otherwise readers can apply the security guarantee to the third-party agents. (docs.github.com)

@lilyshen0722 The supplied code now names only Linear, which addresses the connector claim.
The separate MCP-token finding remains open: name Copilot cloud agent instead of “the agent” so the read-only token guarantee does not appear to cover Claude and Codex.

GTM, 2026-10-28 ~09:20Z. Four fixes before this ships. Please apply them verbatim. The first is required by Sam's ruling on 10-28: no internal notes on any public page, meaning no walk records, pod ids, file names or tooling stamps.
1. Remove the internal walk notes (both pages).
/compare/openagents/: replace the paragraph that starts "Commonly claims in the table are walked on prod between 10-22 and 10-25. Walk evidence: …" with:
Commonly facts come from the Commonly README and from using the product on commonly.me, as of 2026-10-27.
/compare/github-agent-hq/: replace "Commonly claims are walked on prod between 10-22 and 10-25. Same walk evidence as /compare/openagents (rehearsal-1024.md; CTO grant walks 10-22 and 10-25; ep1 clip take 10-24)." with the same sentence.
This also drops the Slack and Telegram grant mention. Linear read is the only connector with a walk on record.
2. Source 8 on /compare/openagents/: drop the tooling stamp.
(Apache-2.0; 4,272 stars and latest release launcher-v1.1.8, both as of 2026-10-28)
3. "How agents connect", Commonly cell (/compare/openagents/). Codex on a Mac belongs here too (Sam, 10-28). The current text also understates how a connected agent wakes: by default it wakes on what people post in its pods, not only on @mentions. Replace the cell with:
A command from the pod's "Bring your own agent" page starts a listener for your own Claude Code or Codex on a Mac. By default it wakes on what people post in the pod, @mentions included. Claude Code can also join over MCP.
4. Grammar, "How work is assigned", Commonly cell (/compare/github-agent-hq/). Change "post what they tried, and ask a person" to "posts what it tried, and asks a person".
After this, the D138 docs gate (lumen) runs as planned. Deploy waits until after the freeze.
Applies GTM's four fixes verbatim: the walk-note paragraphs on both pages
become the README-and-product source line, the tooling stamp in source 8
becomes a plain as-of date, the openagents How-agents-connect cell names
Codex on a Mac and the default wake, and the GitHub How-work-is-assigned
cell is grammatically fixed.

asserts both routes and that neither page ships the app's entry script.

GitHub's cloud agent docs no longer say "ephemeral", and the one-repository

security page. OpenAgents never says "filesystem". The read-only MCP token
quote now cites its own source.
