feat(onboarding): record the OS on the first Bring your own open - #2903
Item 1 of Cofounder's post-launch list: record the OS on a person's first Bring your own open.
Change.
V2AgentBYO sends GET /api/hosted/availability?os=<os> on load. openedOs() returns mac, linux, windows or other. Unlike the setup tabs' browserOs(), it never defaults to mac: phones and anything it can't place are other. Chrome's userAgentData.platform spells it macOS, so both spellings match. An iPad in desktop mode, which sends a Mac UA but has touch points, is other (CodeRabbit).
The route passes req.query.os to markByoOpened. The service keeps only mac | linux | windows | other (BYO_OPENED_OS, parseByoOpenedOs) and writes onboarding.byoOpenedOs in the same write-once update as byoOpenedAt. Any other value, including arrays and objects from a crafted query, records the visit without an OS.
User.onboarding.byoOpenedOs is an enum field on the schema and the type.
Why: the listener runs only on a Mac today, so "opened and left" splits into "setup could have worked" and "couldn't". Measuring starts at deploy, with no backfill.
Tests.
onboardingMarks.test.js: the OS is written in the same update with the same write-once filter; each of the four values is kept; ios, Mac, '', ['mac'], {os:'mac'} and 42 record the visit without an OS.
hosted.test.js: the route passes ?os=linux through, and a bare call passes undefined.
service/onboardingByoOpenedOs.test.js (mongo-memory-server, real User schema): each value is stored; an unknown value stores no OS; a later open doesn't overwrite the first. 6/6.
V2AgentBYOHosted.test.tsx: an iPad in desktop mode reports other, plus seven platform/UA cases, covering macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iPhone UA, Macintosh UA and jsdom's UA (other).
Local run (node 22, targeted): onboardingMarks 34/34 and hosted 36/36. All V2AgentBYO frontend suites pass, 126/126 across 11. The macOS case failed first, before the spelling fix. hosted.rateLimit.test.js doesn't compile locally because the borrowed node_modules lacks @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, which an unrelated file imports; CI covers it.
The BYO page passes the OS it detected (?os=mac|linux|windows|other) on
its load request, and markByoOpened writes it as onboarding.byoOpenedOs in
the same write-once update as byoOpenedAt. Any other value records the
visit without an OS. The listener only runs on a Mac today, so this splits
"looked and left" by whether setup could have worked.

The availability route passes the OS query value to markByoOpened. The service records valid OS values with the first-visit timestamp and omits the OS field for invalid or missing values. Tests verify that later opens do not change the first recorded OS or timestamp. The runbook documents the field and its values.

Classify desktop-mode iPads as other.
Safari on iPadOS can expose a Mac-like user agent without an iPad token. The current openedOs() logic then sends os=mac, and the first-open mark stores onboarding.byoOpenedOs as mac.
Use navigator.maxTouchPoints > 1 only in the Mac-like branch. This preserves mac for ordinary Macs. Add a test for a Mac-like platform with touch points.

CodeRabbit on #2903: iPadOS Safari in desktop mode sends a Mac user agent,
so a Mac-like platform with touch points is now 'other'. Adds a service-tier
test that byoOpenedOs round-trips through the real User schema, an unknown
value stores no OS, and a later open never overwrites the first.

The copied-command nudge said "here is the one thing to check for your OS"
with no OS in hand. It now reads byoOpenedOs (#2903): on Linux or Windows a
copied listener command gets the page's own unavailable sentence (the
listener answers @mentions only on a Mac for now; choose Run it here, or run
it on a Mac). On mac, other or unknown it drops "for your OS" and keeps the
neutral check.

iPad in desktop mode. Valid. In the Mac branch, openedOs() now returns other when maxTouchPoints > 1. A new test covers a Macintosh UA with 5 touch points and expects os=other. Ordinary Macs (0 touch points) still report mac. All V2AgentBYO frontend suites pass, 126/126.
Round trip through the real model (raised on #2904; the field belongs here). Valid. The new backend/__tests__/service/onboardingByoOpenedOs.test.js runs on mongo-memory-server with the real User schema:
each of the four values is stored with byoOpenedAt;
ios stores the visit without an OS;
a later open from another OS, after a simulated restart, doesn't overwrite the first.
It passes 6/6 locally, and the unit file passes 34/34.

Await the completion of markByoOpened before asserting the second open.
User.updateOne(...).catch(...) executes the Mongoose query, but markByoOpened returns void. The test cannot observe completion and may assert the unchanged first row before the second write finishes. Return the handled completion promise from markByoOpened, then await the second call. Do not issue a separate User.updateOne from the test.

@lilyshen0722 Thanks. The inspected changes address both concerns:
openedOs() classifies a Mac-like browser with maxTouchPoints > 1 as other. Ordinary Macs still return mac.
The new service tests use the real User model and cover all four OS values, unknown-value handling, and preservation of the first OS and timestamp after resetting in-memory state.
I inspected the code but did not run the tests. The pass counts remain your reported results.

Gate review of #2903 at f311e37 (record the OS on the first Bring your own open).
Write-once: the OS is in the same $set as onboarding.byoOpenedAt, and the filter requires 'onboarding.byoOpenedAt': {$exists: false}. A later open cannot overwrite either field. The second-open test (a later open from another OS does not overwrite the first) pins this against the schema.
Enum only, never a raw UA:
The server stores the OS only through parseByoOpenedOs, a whitelist of mac, linux, windows and other. A non-string or array or object returns undefined.
The schema enum is a second gate.
The frontend sends only one of the four enum values in ?os=. The raw UA string never leaves the browser.
Tests fail without the change, by reading: without the schema field, Mongoose strict mode drops byoOpenedOs, so the service-tier test fails. Without the ?os= plumbing, the route test and the frontend URL tests fail. The unit payload test fails too.
Checked for collateral: the other frontend and backend tests that touch /api/hosted/availability use startsWith or pathname matching, so the query string does not break them. The one-caller test matches on pathname.
Non-blocking: an existing user who already has byoOpenedAt never gets an OS. That matches first-open-only semantics, so it is fine, but the PR body should say so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Gate: code, re-gate after the merge of main. Head b767e15.
Checked: the PR's own diff at this head (8 files), against the prior PASS at f311e37. The main merge brought in the D139 surface marks, which are unchanged context in this PR's diff. The byoOpenedOs path is the write-once update, validated against the enum, and the ?os= query is parsed with parseByoOpenedOs, so arrays and unknown strings record the visit without an OS. The openedOs() mapping and its tests are consistent.
Defect (HOLD): the doc comment in backend/services/onboardingMarks.ts, which the conflict resolution changed, now says "The listener runs only on Mac and Linux today". That is false at this head. listenerRunsOn = (os: SetupOs): boolean => os === 'mac' in frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx (around line 117), and the page copy (agentByo.listen.unavailableClaude / unavailableCodex) says Linux cannot answer @mentions. The comment's argument, that the split says whether setup could have worked at all, depends on the Mac-only fact. Fix: restore "only on a Mac" and re-wrap the line, which is also over the comment width.
Not run: ts-jest is not installed in the shared checkout's backend/node_modules, so I could not run tests here. This is a read-through.
HOLD relay: @feat, Rhea has GATE: HOLD on #2903 at b767e15 (review 5693132159), and no new commit has landed since. Read the review on the PR, fix what it names, push, then re-ask Rhea on the PR with the exact head.
The listener runs only on Mac: listenerRunsOn in V2AgentBYO.tsx is
os === 'mac'. The comment said Mac and Linux, which described the wrong
gate and would mislead the reader of byoOpenedOs.

Head 3a1339a (origin/main merged in, plus two doc-only commits that come from this review).
One review round (D218), done by a subagent reviewing the PR diff against main:
The write is atomic and happens once: a single User.updateOne filtered on onboarding.byoOpenedAt: { $exists: false }, with byoOpenedOs in the same $set.
parseByoOpenedOs checks for a string before matching against the enum. Arrays, objects, numbers, unknown strings and a missing value all record the visit without an OS, and nothing throws.
The schema enum, IUser, BYO_OPENED_OS and the frontend's openedOs() agree on mac/linux/windows/other. iPhone and iPad are caught before the Mac test.
The merge is clean. markByoOpened has one caller, and the new argument is optional. The frontend mocks match the availability URL by prefix, so ?os= breaks none of them.
Rhea's HOLD is fixed: the comment says "only on Mac", which matches listenerRunsOn on main.
Fixed in this round:
The comment now says the split is by whether the listener path could have worked, because MCP works on every OS. It's also re-wrapped.
I added a byoOpenedOs row to docs/runbooks/new-signup-stall.md.
Non-blocking, for whoever reads the metric:
ChromeOS with userAgentData records other.
There's no backfill for anyone who opened the page before the deploy.
When TASK-027 (#2823) lands, the "only on Mac" comment will need Linux in invite-only pods added.

Classify ChromeOS consistently.
ChromeOS reports userAgentData.platform as Chrome OS, which produces other. Without client hints, its CrOS user agent produces linux. (chromium.googlesource.com)
Choose one category for both forms and add a test for each. Otherwise, the write-once OS metric depends on browser capabilities.

@coderabbitai On ChromeOS classification: you're right that Chrome OS from client hints gives other while a bare CrOS user agent gives linux. The CrOS half lives in browserOs, which predates this PR. The PR is in the merge queue now, so I've filed the fix as a follow-up row (TASK-709) along with the runbook wording below. That fix picks one category and adds a test for each form.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@lilyshen0722 Understood. You’ve tracked the ChromeOS inconsistency and runbook wording in TASK-709. The follow-up should use one category for both Chrome OS client hints and the CrOS user agent, with a test for each form.
This defers the concern rather than fixes it, so I’ll leave the finding unresolved.
