Stacked on #2903. The first two commits are #2903's. Review only the top two: fix(onboarding): the stalled nudge names the OS only when it knows it and …conditional on where it ran. Merge after #2903 and after the launch tag (D148).

Item 2 of Cofounder's post-launch list. stalledConnectCopy.ts:94-97 told a person who copied a command "here is the one thing to check for your OS", but nothing there knew the OS.

Change. The nudge reads User.onboarding.byoOpenedOs from #2903.

  • Copied the listener command, browser OS is linux or windows. The nudge says: "If you ran it on Linux, that's why: the listener can't answer @mentions from Linux yet, because Commonly runs it in a sandbox that can't run there." It then offers running the command on a Mac, or "Run it here" on the Bring your own page for a hosted agent. The forward promise ("I'll post here the moment I connect") stays. The sentence is conditional because the page shows the listener command only on its Mac tab, so a Linux-browser copy may have been run on a Mac (CodeRabbit's point).
  • OS is mac, other or unknown. "for your OS" is dropped and the neutral check is kept.
  • MCP copies are unchanged.

One deviation from the brief. Cofounder asked for "Claude Code" by name, matching agentByo.listen.unavailableClaude. The server never learns which adapter the copied command named: the page's --adapter claude|codex choice isn't recorded, and the install is a plain webhook. On Linux and Windows, unavailableClaude and unavailableCodex both say the CLI "can't answer @mentions from {os} yet" and offer "Run it here". So the nudge says "the listener" and reuses that shared sentence. Naming Claude Code would be wrong for a Codex user.

Tests (stalledConnectService.test.js, 27/27 locally on node 22):

  • the cli copy with no OS gets the neutral check and the phrase "for your OS" is absent;
  • linux and windows get the conditional Mac-only sentence, the fix command "on a Mac", "Run it here" and the forward promise;
  • mac, other and undefined keep the neutral check;
  • an MCP copy on Linux isn't told about the listener.

The BYO page passes the OS it detected (?os=mac|linux|windows|other) on
its load request, and markByoOpened writes it as onboarding.byoOpenedOs in
the same write-once update as byoOpenedAt. Any other value records the
visit without an OS. The listener only runs on a Mac today, so this splits
"looked and left" by whether setup could have worked.

Walkthrough

The BYO page sends its detected OS with the hosted availability request. The backend stores supported OS values with the first-visit timestamp. Stalled-connect nudges use the stored value to provide platform-specific CLI guidance for Linux and Windows.

Changes: BYO OS capture and stalled-connect nudges

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and send the BYO page OS
frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOHosted.test.tsx

The availability route passes the query value to markByoOpened. The service stores supported values with the visit timestamp and omits unsupported values. Tests cover persistence and write-once behavior. The runbook documents the stored value.
Use the stored OS in stalled-connect nudges
backend/services/stalledConnectService.ts, backend/services/stalledConnectCopy.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/stalledConnectService.test.js
The stalled-connect service passes the stored OS to the copy composer. Linux and Windows CLI cases receive platform-specific guidance. Other OS values receive neutral guidance, and MCP copies retain MCP-specific guidance.

Add a real-model round-trip test for byoOpenedOs.

The current test mocks User.updateOne and checks only the update payload. The stalled-nudge tests also supply byoOpenedOs through a mocked User.findById result. Add a model-backed test that calls markByoOpened, reads the User record, and checks both byoOpenedAt and byoOpenedOs.

The project checklist explicitly requires this round trip for cross-layer fields. The original trivial/nitpick classification understates the testing-contract violation.

Use the selected setup OS for the stalled CLI nudge.

openedOs records the browser OS, not setupOs. A Linux browser can select Mac, receive the Mac listener command, and copy it. The stalled service later passes only byoOpenedOs to the nudge, so it can emit Linux-specific guidance for that Mac command.

The wording does not literally state where the command ran, but it incorrectly attributes the stalled copy to the browser OS. Persist the selected setup OS with the CLI copy event and use it for this message. Add a test with different browser and setup OS values.

…enedOs

CodeRabbit on #2903: iPadOS Safari in desktop mode sends a Mac user agent,
so a Mac-like platform with touch points is now 'other'. Adds a service-tier
test that byoOpenedOs round-trips through the real User schema, an unknown
value stores no OS, and a later open never overwrites the first.

The copied-command nudge said "here is the one thing to check for your OS"
with no OS in hand. It now reads byoOpenedOs (#2903): on Linux or Windows a
copied listener command gets the page's own unavailable sentence (the
listener answers @mentions only on a Mac for now; choose Run it here, or run
it on a Mac). On mac, other or unknown it drops "for your OS" and keeps the
neutral check.

CodeRabbit on #2904: byoOpenedOs is the browser's OS, and the page shows the
listener command only on its Mac tab, so a copy from a Linux browser may
have been run on a Mac. The sentence now reads "If you ran it on Linux,
that's why", then offers the Mac run or Run it here.

@coderabbitai Thanks. Both points are answered; the change is in 6b5f9ac, now restacked on #2903's f311e37.

Setup OS vs browser OS. The concern is valid; the proposed fix wouldn't carry information. The page renders the listener command and its Copy button only when listenerRunsOn(setupOs), which is setupOs === 'mac' (V2AgentBYO.tsx, the listenerAvailable && block around the copy('listen', …) button). So every cli-command-copied already has setup OS mac, and persisting it would always write mac. The real ambiguity you found is that a Linux-browser copy means the person picked the Mac tab, and they may have run it on a Mac or on Linux. The nudge now hedges on exactly that: "If you ran it on Linux, that's why: the listener can't answer @mentions from Linux yet…", then "Run … on a Mac, or choose “Run it here”…". The tests assert the conditional sentence for both Linux and Windows. 27/27 pass.

Model round-trip for byoOpenedOs. Done on #2903, where the field lives: backend/__tests__/service/onboardingByoOpenedOs.test.js, which this PR carries through the stack.

Use the full listener setup on a fresh Mac.

runInstructionFor returns only commonly agent run <name> for a BYO listener. The full setup also installs the CLI and sets COMMONLY_API_URL and COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN. Therefore, a fresh Mac cannot complete setup by running only fixCommand.

This is conditional. The listener command is shown only when the user selects the Mac setup OS, and byoOpenedOs records the browser OS. The pre-change neutral path already used fixCommand on the target machine. The sentence can therefore refer to an already-configured Mac, but it does not cover a fresh-Mac move.

Suggested fix
- + `Run \`${fixCommand}\` on a Mac, or choose “Run it here” on the Bring your own page for a hosted agent. `
+ + `On a fresh Mac, copy and run the full listener setup from the Bring your own page, or choose “Run it here” on the Bring your own page for a hosted agent. `

@lilyshen0722 Thanks. Source inspection confirms both points:

  • listenerRunsOn(setupOs) requires mac, and listenerAvailable gates the listener Copy button. Recording setupOs there would not establish where the command ran. My proposed fix would not resolve that ambiguity.
  • The nudge now makes the Linux and Windows explanation conditional. The tests assert that wording for both OS values.
  • backend/__tests__/service/onboardingByoOpenedOs.test.js checks persistence through the real User schema, invalid-value handling, and preservation of the first OS and timestamp.

These changes address both concerns. I inspected the source and test assertions; I did not run the tests.

Gate: code, re-gate after the merge of main. Head a1c33bb.

Checked: the stalled-nudge hunks. The Linux and Windows copy is conditional: "If you ran it on Linux, that's why". It keys on byoOpenedOs and only on the cli command type, and the MCP and Mac or other cases keep the neutral check. The copy's reason matches the page: unavailableClaude says Commonly's sandbox can't run Claude Code on that OS. The openedOs evidence is read from installer.onboarding?.byoOpenedOs in stalledConnectService, matching the schema enum.

Defect (HOLD): this PR carries the same onboardingMarks.ts comment hunk as #2903, which says "The listener runs only on Mac and Linux today". That is false, because listenerRunsOn is os === 'mac'. Fix it in #2903 and this PR picks it up on the next merge of main.

Non-blocking copy note: for Codex, the page's own comment says Linux is "not walked yet", and the zh copy says "Linux 尚未测试". The nudge gives the same "sandbox that can't run there" reason for every CLI listener, so a Codex copy overstates it. Consider "not supported on Linux yet" for the CLI case.

Not run: ts-jest is not installed in the shared checkout's backend/node_modules, so I could not run tests here. This is a read-through.

Head 5f6774d. This merges the updated #2903 head (3a1339a) and origin/main, then adds one fix that came out of this review.

One review round (D218), done by a subagent on the delta against #2903 (3 files):

  • Rhea's HOLD is resolved: git diff origin/feat/byo-opened-os HEAD -- backend/services/onboardingMarks.ts is now empty, so this PR carries #2903's corrected comment exactly.
  • The OS branch runs only for commandType === 'cli'. MCP, mac, other and unknown fall through to the neutral copy.
  • installer.onboarding?.byoOpenedOs is safe when onboarding is undefined, and .select('username onboarding') already brings the field back.
  • composeStalledConnectNudge has one caller, and openedOs is optional.
  • Locales: this copy is server-side and English-only by design (see the comment on NudgeLocale).

The review found one defect, now fixed at this head. The Linux/Windows sentence blamed a sandbox that "can't run there". That's true for Claude Code, but on those OSes Codex isn't refused, it's untested (agentByo.listen.unavailableCodex). The server can't tell which adapter was copied, so the copy now says only "that's likely why: the listener answers @mentions only from a Mac for now". The code comment names each adapter's real reason, and the test asserts the new sentence and that "sandbox" isn't in it.

Non-blocking:

  • "Run it here" is offered unconditionally, so it's wrong on a self-hosted instance with no hosted runtime. The CLI's HOSTED_LINE is just as unconditional.
  • byoOpenedOs is the OS of the first visit, not where the command was copied. The "If you ran it on…" hedge covers that.

byoOpenedOs records the browser OS, not where the person ran the command. A Linux browser can copy a command for a Mac. This mark therefore cannot tell an operator whether the Mac-only listener path could have worked. Describe it as browser context, and correct the same inference in backend/services/onboardingMarks.ts Lines 29-33. @coderabbitai On the two minors:

  • "Run it here" when hosting isn't configured: agreed it's unconditional. The CLI's own HOSTED_LINE is too, and commonly.me always has hosting configured, so this only misleads on a self-hosted instance with no hosted runtime. It's a follow-up on TASK-709.
  • byoOpenedOs is the browser's OS: agreed. The runbook row and the onboardingMarks.ts comment should call it a hint, not proof, of where the listener would run. The nudge copy already hedges ("If you ran it on …, that's likely why"). Both PRs are in the merge queue, so the wording fix is ready and lands as a follow-up on TASK-709.

@lilyshen0722 Understood. Both minors remain follow-ups on TASK-709, not completed fixes in this PR.

  • Hosted guidance: Based on your deployment clarification, the unconditional “Run it here” wording affects self-hosted instances without a hosted runtime.
  • Browser OS: Source inspection confirms that the runbook row and onboardingMarks.ts comment still overstate what byoOpenedOs establishes. The follow-up should describe it as a browser-OS hint, not proof of where the command ran. This matches the existing review guidance.

No separate issue is needed because TASK-709 already tracks the work. I’ll leave these findings unresolved pending the follow-up.

Learning: Within repository "Team-Commonly/commonly", only for files matching one of ["backend/services/stalledConnectCopy.ts","frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx"]: When reviewing OS-specific stalled-connect guidance in backend/services/stalledConnectCopy.ts or its setup flow in frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx, distinguish the browser OS recorded as byoOpenedOs from the machine where the copied command ran. Require explanations based only on byoOpenedOs to remain conditional on where the command ran, unless independent execution-location evidence is available. Do not treat the selected setup OS or copying a command as proof of execution location.
