Summary

Scout's roster row and the Your Team card showed scout, and the invite line read "They can work with Scout (Default) too." The walk on 6f3e335 failed, and TASK-551 was reopened (Lily, 10-30 20:03Z). The stored record was wrong, not the render: the roster API returned scout for this install.

Two root causes:

  • scout has no AGENT_TYPES entry. The create, upgrade and refresh arms of AgentIdentityService.getOrCreateAgentUser stored the bare agentName when no displayName was passed.
  • The collision resolver picked its canonical row by shortest instanceId. scout (5 chars) outranked default (7 chars), so the default row was suffixed with its humanized instance id: "Scout (Default)".

The default-first rule is scoped to first-party agents, per Lily's ruling in the Sharpen pod. Every other agent keeps the shortest-instanceId rule.

Changes

  • backend/constants/firstPartyDisplayNames.ts (new): curated labels for first-party agents with no AGENT_TYPES entry. Only scout → Scout. A test pins it to backend/config/native-agents/scout.ts.
  • backend/services/agentIdentityService.ts: the create, upgrade and refresh arms use the curated label when no displayName is passed. The refresh arm keeps a non-empty stored displayName. The collision resolver ranks a first-party default instance first. Other agents keep the shortest-instanceId rule, with an alphabetical tiebreak on instanceId, then agentName.
  • backend/scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts: the one-shot dedupe script uses the same rule. Its run line is npx ts-node.
  • backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts (new): repairs rows already stored. Dry run unless --apply.
    • Rule 1: a first-party row whose label is blank or equals its agentName gets the curated label.
    • Rule 2: a first-party default-instance row ending in " (Default)" loses the suffix. Non-first-party rows are left alone.
    • A first-party default row whose target label a non-opaque peer already holds is skipped and printed as skipped. It never writes a duplicate label.
    • --apply writes Mongo botMetadata.displayName and the Postgres users.username mirror, so chat reads the repaired label.
  • backend/utils/agentDisplayLabel.ts: the leak check that replaces a stored label with the raw instance id applies only to shared-runtime agentNames (openclaw, codex, claude-code). A first-party label such as "Scout (Scout-Demo)" is kept.
  • docs/agents/agent-runtime-quick-rules.md: the canonical-rule line states the first-party scoping and the tiebreak.

The refresh arm keeps a non-empty stored displayName, so code alone cannot fix existing rows. That is what the repair script is for.

The My Workspace inspector label and its render test are already on main. This PR does not touch the frontend.

Walks and operator steps

Two walks, in this order. Neither is run by this PR, and someone other than the author runs both.

  1. Staging, after the merge. Covers the code path for new installs: a fresh Scout install shows "Scout" on its roster row and its Your Team card, and the invite line reads "They can work with Scout too."
  2. Prod, after the repair. The stored labels live on prod, so the repair runs there after the next daily prod deploy carries this merge. SRE runs it: a dry run first (cd backend && MONGO_URI=<prod> npx ts-node scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts), checking the list and any skipped lines, then the same command with --apply. Then walk Scout's roster row, the Your Team card and the invite line on prod.

Not in this PR

  • A seat with no curated displayName still shows its instance id (resolver step 2). Known gap, out of scope here.
  • With a User row and no curated name, a default instance can resolve to its username, which is the agent type. Needs its own ticket.
  • The repair rewrites botMetadata.displayName and the PG users.username mirror only. Room pod names and AgentInstallation.displayName rows that still carry "Scout (Default)" are not rewritten. The roster and invite line read the User row when one exists, so they are covered.

Tests

Run locally on this head (f72ec16):

  • npm run tsc:check: exit 0.
  • npx eslint on the five changed TypeScript files: 0 errors, 6 warnings.
  • Backend suites matching agentIdentityService|dedupeAgentDisplayNames|repairFirstPartyLabels|agentDisplayLabel: 9 suites, 109 tests, all passing. This includes the four touched test files.
  • Mutation check on this tree, with seven guards removed one at a time. Each one fails its suite:
    • M1: upgrade-arm curated fallback
    • M2: refresh-arm curated fallback
    • M3: "My Scout" overwritten on refresh
    • M4: first-party scoping reverted in the resolver
    • M5: canonical identity compared by instanceId
    • M6: agentName tiebreak removed
    • M7: the <name> (<instance>) leak branch applied to every agent

I have not run the full backend suite on this head. CI is the gate.

The repair script is not run by this PR. It is an operator step after merge and deploy. Its dry run only reads; --apply writes to the database.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

… default row (TASK-551)

Scout has no AGENT_TYPES entry, so the create, upgrade and refresh arms
stored its bare agentName ("scout") when no displayName was passed. The
collision resolver also picked its canonical row by shortest instanceId:
a named peer with a shorter id displaced the default row, which then came
back as "Scout (Default)" in the invite line.

- FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES (scout -> Scout), used by all three arms when
no displayName is passed. Only scout is listed.
- Canonical rule: the default instance ranks first, then shortest
instanceId, then alphabetical. The one-shot dedupe script uses the same
rule. On a collision a named instance now takes the suffix.
- backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts: dry run by default, --apply
  writes.

The refresh arm keeps a stored non-empty label, so code alone cannot
repair rows that already exist.

Walkthrough

The identity service now uses curated first-party display names and prioritizes qualifying default instances during collision resolution. A deduplication script applies the same canonical-selection rule. A repair script identifies eligible stored labels and can update writable repairs.

Changes: Agent display labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Curated labels and collision resolution
backend/constants/firstPartyDisplayNames.ts, backend/services/agentIdentityService.ts, backend/utils/agentDisplayLabel.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/constants/firstPartyDisplayNames.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/*, docs/agents/agent-runtime-quick-rules.md
The identity service uses curated first-party names as fallbacks and ranks qualifying default instances first during collision resolution. The display-label resolver keeps product-agent labels in the <agentName> (<instanceId>) form. Tests cover name matching, collision outcomes, and fallback behavior; runtime rules document the selection rule.
Deduplication selection rule
backend/scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/scripts/dedupeAgentDisplayNames.test.js, CLAUDE.md
The script selects a first-party default instance as canonical when present. Otherwise, it uses instance-ID ordering with further tie-breakers. The script exports pickCanonical and runs main only when invoked directly. Tests and script-path documentation are updated.
Stored label repair script
backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/scripts/repairFirstPartyLabels.test.js
The script plans repairs for eligible first-party labels, marks contested targets, and separates writable repairs from skipped repairs. It reads candidate rows from MongoDB and updates writable repairs only when run with --apply; it also mirrors labels to PostgreSQL when a pool is configured. Tests cover planning and collision handling.

Synchronize repaired labels during --apply.

--apply updates MongoDB only, so a PostgreSQL message read before another sync can show the old byline from users.username. The value can self-heal when the agent posts again, because that path calls syncUserToPostgreSQL, but the repair is not immediately consistent.

Sync each repaired user after the MongoDB update, or define a post-repair mirror-sync step.

Test the curated fallback on upgrade and refresh.

The new creation test reaches Line 526. It does not reach the fallback on Line 589 or Line 627. Add an upgrade test for an agent-owned scout row with no supplied name. Add a refresh test for an existing scout bot with a blank stored name. Each test should assert that the saved name is Scout; the existing tests for these branches supply an explicit name. The documented command used `node --import tsx`, which neither package
manifest declares, so it could not load on an install of the declared
dependencies. The backend declares ts-node, and the scrub and migrate
runbooks document `npx ts-node` from backend/, so use the same form.

Restrict the parenthetical leak check to shared runtime names.

The default-first collision path can store Scout (Scout-Demo). The unconditional parenthetical check then treats it as a runtime leak, and the resolver returns scout-demo instead of the stored label. Apply the existing SHARED_RUNTIME_AGENT_NAMES guard to this branch. This preserves cleanup for legacy values such as openclaw (nova).

Resolve collisions before writing repaired labels.

The --apply entrypoint writes r.to even when the peer query finds an existing holder. A repaired default row can duplicate a named row’s Scout label, and a repaired named row can duplicate the default row. This violates the documented default-first collision rule.

Before updateOne, apply the existing default-first collision resolution across the repaired and existing rows, or run the equivalent deduplication pass as part of --apply. Do not persist r.to unchanged when peers exist.

Review at head e0ebd98 (TASK-551). Verdict below.

Checked

  1. Create, upgrade and refresh arms all use FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES before the bare agentName. The refresh arm keeps a stored displayName (hasStoredDisplayName), so a label set by a user is not overwritten. The upgrade arm still writes botMetadata.displayName unconditionally, as it did before this PR. Not new, but the "never overwrites a user-set label" claim only holds for refresh.
  2. Scope of the canonical change: defect (see below).
  3. Repair script: exact-match planner, dry run unless --apply, idempotent (a repaired row returns to === display and is skipped). ts-node is a backend dependency and ../constants/firstPartyDisplayNames resolves. I did not run the documented command, since there is no node_modules in this checkout.
  4. Tests: the default-keeps-bare-name, named-collides-with-default, curated-create, and scout-config-agreement tests all fail on main by reading the code (scout 5 chars outranks default 7; the constants module does not exist on main). I did not run them.
  5. Other callers of scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts: none in backend/, scripts/, package.json, or .github/. It is run by hand as a one-shot.

Defect (blocks GATE: PASS)
pickCanonical (script) and the inline sort (agentIdentityService.ts ~line 438) now rank the default instance first for every displayName group, not only first-party agents. Example: a user-installed, non-first-party agent "Helper" with a default row and a bot row. On main, bot (3 chars) was canonical and default became "Helper (Default)". With this PR, default is canonical and bot becomes "Helper (Bot)". Two effects:

  • A new registration that collides with an existing default row now gets the suffix instead of the bare name, for any agent.
  • Running the dedupe script renames the named peer of a non-first-party default group. Item (2) of the brief says the change must not rename any agent other than the default row of a first-party agent. It does.
No test covers a non-first-party group.

Fix options for the author: scope the default-first rule to isOfficial/first-party groups (the default row of an agent with a curated label), or state in the ADR/docs that default-first is the general rule and accept the change for all agents. Either way, add a test for a non-first-party default + shorter named peer.

Otto, Opus gate (Tier 2) at e0ebd98.

The diff is 7 files against 300e735, and CI is green at this head. I tested by symlinking main's backend node_modules into a detached worktree; both suites pass 36/36. I ran the repair script exactly as documented (cd backend && npx ts-node scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts, then with --apply) against an in-memory MongoDB seeded with seven bot rows. I never ran it against prod.

(1) The arms store the curated label, but only one of the three is pinned. By reading: create uses options.displayName || officialDisplayName || curated || type. Upgrade does the same with username last. Refresh uses the curated label only when the stored label is blank, so a label a user set survives. In the harness, a scout row labelled "My Scout" was left alone by the repair as well. Mutants:

mutant result
create-arm curated fallback removed killed
upgrade-arm curated fallback removed survives
refresh-arm curated fallback removed survives
refresh prefers the curated label over a stored one for a first-party agent (overwrites a user's label) survives

(2) The canonical-row change reaches beyond the default row of a first-party agent.

  • Resolver. The default-first sort applies to every agent type. It only labels the row being written: on create, upgrade, or refresh when metadata is incomplete (needsUpdate). Existing healthy rows keep their labels. From here on, a short-named instance of any agent that collides with a default row takes the suffix. That is the stated rule and the quick-rules line says so, so this is a scope note, not a defect.
  • Repair rule 2 is not first-party scoped. It strips " (Default)" from every default-instance row, and the planner test pins a pixel row being renamed. In the harness, --apply renamed pixel "Pixel (Default)" → "Pixel" while pixel-px still held "Pixel". It also renamed scout → "Scout" while a non-opaque market instance held "Scout". The script prints the peer and then writes anyway, so every suffixed default row it touches becomes a duplicate label. Preventing that collision is the reason the dedupe rule exists. The only sweep that would re-suffix the peer is scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts, and its Run line (node --import tsx, /app/scripts/…js) can't run from the backend image.

(3) The repair is otherwise sound. The documented ts-node command loads and runs, exit 0. A dry run left all seven rows byte-identical. --apply repaired 2, and a second dry run found 0. Matching is exact: rule 1 fires only on a blank label or the bare agentName, and rule 2 only on a default instance ending in " (Default)". Removing rule 1 fails 2 planner tests, and removing the default-instance guard fails 1.

(4) Tests fail without the fix for the resolver sort, the create arm, rule 1 and the rule 2 guard. They don't for the upgrade and refresh arms (see (1)).

HOLD, on two items:

  1. Scope repair rule 2 to FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES agentNames, so the script can't rename another agent's row. With that change, only the pixel planner test needs flipping, to "leaves a non-first-party default row alone". For the first-party case, decide what --apply does when a non-opaque peer already holds the target label. Either skip the row and print it as skipped, or keep "report and write" and say in the PR body that it creates a duplicate until the peer is renamed by hand.

  2. Pin the upgrade and refresh arms:

    • a bot scout row with a blank stored label refreshes to "Scout";
    • a non-bot scout user with no displayName upgrades to "Scout";
    • a scout row with a stored "My Scout" and incomplete metadata keeps "My Scout".

Each of these should fail its mutant above.

Not blocking:

  • The peer line lists per-user Scouts (uf… instances) as holders. They keep "Scout" by design, and on prod there will be many of them, which buries a real collision like market. Filter opaque per-user instances out of that line, using the same regex as the resolver.
  • The dedupe script's new pickCanonical order has no test, and its Run line is broken, as Wren noted in the pod. The "keep these aligned" comment is the only link between it and the resolver.
  • A first-party default row ending in " (Default)" is reported with reason first-party, because rule 1 overwrites the reason after rule 2 strips the suffix. This is cosmetic.

… default row (TASK-551)

A first-party install could be stored under its bare agentName ("scout"), and
on a label collision the default instance was suffixed, so the invite line read
"Scout (Default)".

- FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES (backend/constants/firstPartyDisplayNames.ts) keys
the curated labels by agentName: Pod Welcomer, Task Clerk, Pod Summarizer,
  Scout, Recorder. isFirstPartyAgentName matches case-insensitively.
- Default-first on a label collision applies only to first-party agents. Any
other agent keeps the shortest-instanceId rule it has on main. The resolver,
the dedupe pickCanonical and the quick-rules line all say so.
- The upgrade and refresh arms fall back to the curated label. Refresh keeps a
stored user-set label such as "My Scout".
- backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts repairs stored rows. It is a dry
run unless --apply is passed. A first-party default row whose target label a
named peer already holds is skipped and printed, never written.
- backend/scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts run line is npx ts-node.

The default-first rule (a first-party agent's `default` instance keeps the
bare label) now applies only to first-party agentNames, in the inline
resolver and in the dedupe pickCanonical. Every other agent keeps the
shortest-instanceId rule, with an explicit tiebreak on instanceId, then
agentName, so row order never decides a tie.

- Repair rule 2 ("(Default)" suffix) is scoped to FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES.
- --apply skips a first-party default row whose target label a non-opaque
peer already holds, prints it as skipped, and never writes a duplicate.
- --apply mirrors the new label to Postgres users.username as well as
Mongo, so chat reads the repaired label.
- The leak check in resolveAgentDisplayLabel applies only to shared-runtime
agentNames (openclaw, codex, claude-code), so "Scout (Scout-Demo)" is kept.
- Tests pin the upgrade and refresh curated fallbacks, and that a refresh
  keeps a stored "My Scout".
- The quick-rules canonical line states the first-party scoping and the
  instanceId-then-agentName tiebreak.

Minor follow-up Do not update MongoDB when a configured PostgreSQL mirror fails.

192-192: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Do not update MongoDB when a configured PostgreSQL mirror fails.

When pgPool exists and users has no matching _id, mirrorLabel returns false. The loop then updates MongoDB. A later repair run no longer selects that row, so PostgreSQL remains without the identity row. The PostgreSQL message query uses a LEFT JOIN, so affected messages can have no username.

Keep the PostgreSQL mirror optional. Enforce the result only when pgPool is configured:

Suggested fix
     if (APPLY) {
-      await mirrorLabel(pgPool, r.id, r.to);
+      if (pgPool && !(await mirrorLabel(pgPool, r.id, r.to))) {

+      }
       await User.updateOne({ _id: r.id }, { $set: { 'botMetadata.displayName': r.to } });

Minor follow-up Add focused tier-1 coverage for mirrorLabel.

4-4: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Add focused tier-1 coverage for mirrorLabel.

The planner tests do not call mirrorLabel or execute the --apply loop. Add a service test that uses the existing real-Postgres fixture, calls the exported mirrorLabel, and covers:

  • an existing users._id, asserting the username update;
  • a missing _id, asserting the returned false for a zero-row update.

This is separate from the Mongo dry-run/apply coverage. Checklist item 55 applies because this PR adds the SQL statement in mirrorLabel; pg-mem is not sufficient. No new database scaffolding or export of main() is required.

Minor follow-up Install-time peer lookup misses case-only botMetadata.displayName matches.

431-459: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Install-time peer lookup misses case-only botMetadata.displayName matches.

resolveCollisionFreeDisplayName queries peers with exact equality and no .collation(...). A community agent created with displayName scout can therefore miss an existing first-party default labeled Scout. It keeps the bare name, and the two labels differ only by case. The explicit-rename path rejects the same case-only pair through a case-insensitive regex, so the create path and rename path apply different rules.

Match the collation that the index already uses:

Suggested fix
+ .collation({ locale: 'en', strength: 2 })
     .lean<Array<{ botMetadata?: { instanceId?: string; agentName?: string } }>>();

This change makes a community claimant yield when a first-party default Scout already exists. It does not change the reverse order, where a community scout already exists and the first-party Scout keeps its bare name under the first-party default rule.

Compare occupied labels without case sensitivity.

An existing community label scout can bypass the repair planner’s check for the first-party target Scout. The planner uses exact-case keys, while explicit agent renames reject case-only duplicates.

Otto, Opus gate (re-gate) at f72ec16, against my HOLD at e0ebd98 (review 5719328295) and Lily's five-item list (pod msg 117075).

Both of my blocking items are closed.

1. Repair rule 2 is first-party only, and the repair never writes a duplicate label.
planLabelRepairs now skips any agentName not in FIRST_PARTY_DISPLAY_NAMES. Rule 2 strips " (Default)" only when what remains is that agent's curated label. A repair whose target label a non-per-user row already holds, or that another repair in the same run would also land on, gets heldBy. splitRepairs keeps it out of the writes, and the script prints it as skipped.

I ran the documented cd backend && npx ts-node scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts against a seeded in-memory Mongo, never a shared database, with PG_HOST unset. The seed is the case that held last time, plus a few more:

  • scout default "Scout (Default)" with scout market "Scout": skipped and printed. Nothing written.
  • recorder default "Recorder (Default)" with a community agent rec on default holding "Recorder": skipped.
  • pixel default "Pixel (Default)" with pixel px "Pixel": untouched.
  • scout lab "My Scout": untouched.
  • per-user scout u0123456789 "scout" became "Scout", task-clerk "task-clerk" became "Task Clerk", and pod-welcomer "" became "Pod Welcomer".

The dry run wrote nothing. After --apply, no two non-per-user rows share a label. A second dry run found 0 to repair and the same 2 skipped.

2. The upgrade and refresh arms are pinned.
My three surviving mutants now each fail a test: R3 (upgrade fallback removed), R4 (refresh fallback removed), and R5 (refresh prefers the curated label over a stored "My Scout").

Mutants
I ran 23 against the five touched suites, and all 23 fail a test:

  • Resolver:
    • first-party default-first removed (2 fail)
    • unscoped to any agent's default (3 fail, including the non-first-party "Helper" test)
    • agentName tiebreak removed (1 fail)
    • caller agentName dropped (2 fail)
  • Arms: create, upgrade and refresh fallbacks, and refresh overwriting a stored label (1 fail each).
  • Planner:
    • first-party scope removed (2 fail)
    • rule 2 default guard removed (1)
    • rule 2 exact-curated compare removed (1)
    • rule 1 overwrites any label (3)
    • rule 1 removed (5)
  • Skips:
    • skip ignored (2)
    • per-user holders unfiltered (1)
    • in-run contest removed (1)
    • per-user repairs contesting (2)
  • Dedupe pickCanonical:
    • default-first unscoped (3)
    • removed (2)
    • agentName/_id tiebreak removed (1)
  • resolveAgentDisplayLabel: the shared-runtime scope on the <name> (<instance>) leak form reverted (1).

Lily's items 1–5: the resolver and dedupe are both scoped through isFirstPartyAgentName, and the quick-rules line and CLAUDE.md say so. The Helper test keeps bot bare and gives default the suffix. Rule 2 is scoped, and the pixel test is flipped. A non-opaque holder skips the write. The arms are pinned. The dedupe run line is npx ts-node, now that the script is in backend/scripts.

The touched suites pass 77/77 at head. CI: 23 pass, 6 skipping, nothing failing or pending.

Non-blocking:

  • mirrorLabel is imported in repairFirstPartyLabels.test.js but no test calls it. A mutant that makes it write nothing passes all 16 tests in that suite. I checked it by hand against pg-mem with the 0001 users shape. It updates only the target _id and stamps updated_at, and returns false for a missing row and for a null pool. A fake-pool test asserting the SQL and [id, label] would pin it.
  • The skip line names holders by instanceId only. For recorder it prints "Recorder" is also taken by default without naming the other agent. agentName:instanceId would save the operator a lookup.
  • docs/plans/2026-08-22-typed-hire-fields-schema.md:108 still points at the old scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts path.
  • The map now covers all five FIRST_PARTY_APPS, not only scout, so default-first and the repair apply to pod-welcomer, task-clerk, pod-summarizer and recorder too. That is what item 1 asks for, and firstPartyDisplayNames.test.js pins each value to its app config.

Review at head f72ec16 (TASK-551 Tier 2 re-stamp of my HOLD at e0ebd98).

Code read only. I did not run the Jest suites: my checkout has no backend/node_modules. Please run them before merge.

  1. Scope is applied in both places. pickCanonical in backend/scripts/dedupe-agent-display-names.ts and the inline sort in backend/services/agentIdentityService.ts rank a default instance first only when isFirstPartyAgentName(agentName) holds. Every other group falls through to shortest instanceId, then alphabetical agentName, then _id.
  2. The non-first-party case holds. For helper with default and bot, bot is canonical on both paths. The dedupe never renames the named peer. The inline resolver keeps "Helper" for bot and gives default "Helper (Default)".
  3. The new tests go red without the scope. Removing the first-party check lets default win the helper group, which breaks "a non-first-party default does not outrank a shorter named peer" and "keeps the shortest-instanceId for a community agent".

No defect found.

On CodeRabbit's two follow-up points in its review at f72ec16 (operator triage):

  1. Case-only label collision: valid. takenBy is keyed by the exact label, so a community scout doesn't hold a repair to Scout, though the rename path rejects case-only duplicates. Fixing in a follow-up: key takenBy by the lower-cased label.
  2. PG mirror updating no row while PG is configured: valid. With pgPool set, a 0-row mirror will stop before the Mongo write, as suggested.

Both are in the --apply path of a script an operator runs by hand, so merging this doesn't run either one. The --apply run waits for the follow-up to merge.
