Motion for the v2 shell: one set of duration and easing tokens, and every moving thing reads them.

What moves

  • Theme switch crossfades the whole page through a view transition.
  • Folds open and close by size. <details> folds use interpolate-size and ::details-content. Custom folds (inspector groups, Your Team's internal list, the claim-run list, the catch-up strip) use the new V2Fold: its grid row goes 0fr to 1fr, so nothing measures pixel heights. A closing fold stays mounted and inert until its animation ends, with a 200ms timer as backup.
  • Chat: a message that arrives live (socket or your own send) fades up 4px. History never animates. Show more folds by size. The transcript spinner waits 300ms, and loaded content fades in only when a spinner actually showed.
  • Board: a live claim glides the card into In Progress through a view transition, and the lease ring pulses only after it lands. At 390, the card leaves toward its new tab and the tab count ticks. The task drawer and the connector drawer slide in from the right, slow in and fast out, over a fading scrim.
  • Reduced motion: one unscoped prefers-reduced-motion block sets every end state at once, view transitions included. Hover transitions are gone, and no v2 stylesheet uses transition: all.

Checked in a real browser (local build against staging; board reads mocked, live events fired on the app's own socket listeners, nothing written)

  • Recorded at 390 and 1440, light and dark: an arriving message, Show more, the inspector fold, the theme switch, the claim glide and the drawer. The recordings sit with the design artboard.
  • At 390 with 4× CPU throttle, the longest gap between frames was 17ms for the theme switch, 33ms for the glide, 33ms for the drawer and 33ms for Show more. An arriving message has one long frame. That frame is the message list re-rendering, and main has it too: 99–107ms on main against 84–95ms on this branch, five arrivals each. The enter animation's own frames stay at 33ms or less. Cutting the re-render is a separate change.
  • Reduced motion at 390 and 1440: no animation runs, no view transition starts, and the drawer lands in place and leaves at once.

Not folded: the connectors page's "+N off" reveals add tiles into an existing grid. They aren't one fold body, so they stay as they are.

Tests: V2Fold.test.tsx, V2ChatMotion.test.tsx, V2PodBoard.motion.test.tsx, ConnectorDrawer.motion.test.tsx, v2-motion.test.ts (tokens, the global reduced-motion switch, details folds, no transition: all), and theme.test.ts. The v2 suite passes (180 suites, 2293 tests), and tsc is clean.

Supersedes #3102.

…ils folds

Base of the motion pass. Tokens on :root (120/200/320ms and one curve),
one unscoped reduced-motion switch that also stops view transitions, the
theme switch crossfading through startViewTransition, and every <details>
body opening by size over --v2-dur and closing over --v2-dur-fast.

Carries the tokens and the theme crossfade from #3102.

The global switch's wildcards don't match ::details-content, so folds
still animated under reduced motion. It gets a rule of its own, separate
so a browser without the pseudo-element keeps the rest of the block.

V2Fold wraps a fold body in a one-row grid that goes 0fr to 1fr over
--v2-dur and back over --v2-dur-fast. A closing body stays mounted and
inert until its animation ends, with a timer behind that, and the first
render never animates. The caller's box sits inside the clipping layer,
so its padding and margins fold away with it.

Used by the Inspector groups, the Your Team internal list, the claim-run
fold and the catch-up summary.

…loaded content fades in

A message that arrives live (a socket broadcast, or this tab's own send)
enters once: opacity 0 to 1 and 4px up over --v2-dur on --v2-ease. The hook
stamps a client-only liveArrivedAt on appended rows only; history, a
reconnect catch-up and older pages never carry it. The row decides at mount,
so a re-render or refetch never replays it, and a one-second window keeps a
row that remounts later (a root moving into a thread block) from replaying.

Show more on agent prose and long code now sizes between its preview and
auto with interpolate-size: open over --v2-dur, close over --v2-dur-fast, no
measured height and no max-height. The preview stays exactly six lines:
flow-root keeps the same margin containment the old overflow:hidden fold
had. The chevron turns on the same tokens. Browsers without interpolate-size
jump as before.

Whatever replaces the transcript spinner fades in once over --v2-dur,
opacity only.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015AKgpMD6Qh13f7fj6mbGT3
A transcript load shorter than 300ms now shows no spinner, and its
content appears without the reveal fade, so a fast load never flashes a
loader. The fade still runs when content replaces a spinner that showed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015AKgpMD6Qh13f7fj6mbGT3
A task that changes column through a live task_updated event now glides to
its new column at desktop width: the cards of the two columns involved take a
view-transition-name (task-<id>, made CSS-safe) and the state update runs
inside document.startViewTransition at --v2-dur-slow on --v2-ease. The first
load, a reconnect catch-up and refetches the user started land at once, as
does everything under reduced motion or without the API. The lease ring holds
until the card has landed, and the column dot only pulses while a lease in
that column is live.

At phone width a card leaving the open tab fades out 8px toward the tab it
went to over --v2-dur, that tab's count ticks, and the open tab stays put.

The board task drawer and the connector drawer slide in from the right over
--v2-dur-slow and out over --v2-dur-fast, and the board's phone scrim fades on
its own layer. On close each stays mounted and inert until its exit animation
ends; it unmounts at once under reduced motion or when no exit animation
applies, and a safety timer covers an animationend that never comes.

Hover colour changes on the board keys and connector tiles are now instant,
and the remaining board transitions use the tokens.

Walkthrough

The changes add shared motion utilities and CSS, animated folds, chat message and transcript animations, live board transitions, and exit presence for board and connector drawers.

Changes: V2 Motion and Presence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared motion utilities and styles
frontend/src/v2/utils/motion.ts, frontend/src/v2/utils/theme.ts, frontend/src/v2/v2.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-motion.test.ts, frontend/src/v2/utils/__tests__/theme.test.ts
Adds reduced-motion detection, view-transition helpers, transition-name generation, and exit-presence handling. Adds global motion tokens, fold styles, view-transition styles, and reduced-motion rules. Theme changes use view transitions when available and motion is not reduced.
Animated folds and integrations
frontend/src/v2/components/V2Fold.tsx, frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-message.css, frontend/src/v2/components/V2MessageRow.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2CatchUpStrip.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2Inspector.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2ThreadMessages.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2YourTeamPage.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2Fold.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2ClaimRun.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2Inspector.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts
Adds a fold component that keeps closing content mounted and inert until animation completion or a 200 ms fallback. Integrates it into summary, inspector, claim-run, and team content. Chat folds transition between fixed sizes and auto.
Chat entry and transcript reveal
frontend/src/v2/hooks/useV2PodDetail.ts, frontend/src/v2/components/V2MessageRow.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2ThreadMessages.tsx, frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-message.css, frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-pane.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2ChatMotion.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-motion.test.ts
Timestamps live socket arrivals and newly appended send responses. Message rows use the timestamp to determine entry animation at mount. Initial transcript loading delays the spinner by 300 ms and reveals content after a displayed spinner is dismissed.
Board updates and drawer presence
frontend/src/v2/components/V2PodBoard.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2PodBoard.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2PodBoard.motion.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-motion.test.ts
Live task updates use view transitions on desktop and retained leaving cards with destination-count ticks on phones. The board adds live-claim indicators and retains the task drawer during exit.
Connector drawer exit presence
frontend/src/v2/connectors/ConnectorDrawer.tsx, frontend/src/v2/connectors/ConnectorsPage.tsx, frontend/src/v2/connectors/connectors.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/ConnectorDrawer.motion.test.tsx
Wraps the selected connector drawer in exit-presence handling. The drawer becomes inert and hidden from accessibility APIs while leaving, then unmounts after animation completion or a fallback.

Fresh-context review at 6e1cbb1 (frontend diff only). The six motion/theme suites pass locally (61/61).

Blocking

  1. frontend/src/v2/utils/theme.ts:56-58: the view-transition branch returns before listeners.forEach(...) on line 61, so subscribers are never told about the change. In any browser that has document.startViewTransition (Chrome/Edge, Safari 18+) and no reduced motion, useV2ThemePref and V2ThemeSwitch's useSyncExternalStore never re-read the stored preference. Clicking Dark in the rail switch repaints the page, but the switch keeps aria-pressed on Light, and the Settings picker keeps the old choice selected, until some unrelated re-render happens. The new test in utils/__tests__/theme.test.ts checks only the data-v2-theme attribute, so it passes with this bug. Fix: notify listeners in both branches (inside the transition callback or straight after it), and add a test that subscribes and expects the listener to fire with the API present.

Non-blocking (worth a follow-up)

  1. frontend/src/v2/components/V2PodBoard.tsx:439 with :445: on a live glide, apply is deferred into the startViewTransition callback, but the finally block clears taskLoadPendingRef straight away, and apply never re-checks requestId against taskRequestRef. If an updateDetail PATCH lands in that one-frame window, it bumps taskRequestRef, sees no pending load and doesn't reload. The deferred apply then overwrites the merged task with the older snapshot. The window is narrow. A requestId !== taskRequestRef.current guard at the top of apply closes it.

Checked with no defect found:

  • V2Fold: phases under rapid toggles, the close timer being cancelled on reopen, the inert attribute while closing, and the target check that filters child animationend.
  • useExitPresence: reopening during an exit, the immediate unmount under reduced motion or with no animation, the safety timer, inert plus aria-hidden on the connector and board drawers, Escape being disabled while the drawer leaves.
  • liveArrivedAt: set only by the socket handler and the own-send POST; the reconnect and history paths keep or omit it; enter is decided once at mount.
  • Glide: only on load({ live: true }) from task_updated; guarded when the API is missing and under reduced motion. viewTransitionName always yields a valid ident, and escaping _ keeps distinct ids from colliding.
  • CSS: the global reduced-motion block covers the new animations and view transitions; no transition: all; translated drawers are clipped by their containers.

GATE: HOLD

…erwrites a newer edit

setV2Theme returned before notifying subscribers on the view-transition
path, so the theme switch and the Settings picker kept showing the old
choice after a click in browsers that crossfade. It now notifies on both
paths.

A live board glide applies its rows a frame later, inside the view
transition, but the read stopped counting as pending at once. A detail
edit landing in that gap skipped its reload and was then overwritten by
the older rows. The read now stays pending until the deferred apply runs,
and the apply skips itself if an edit or newer read took over.

Re-review of the delta 6e1cbb1..1f12f85 at 1f12f85.

No defects found. Both findings from the previous review are resolved:

  1. theme.ts: listeners are now notified on both the view-transition path and the instant path. Subscribers read localStorage, which is written before the call, so notifying them before the deferred repaint is correct. The new test subscribes with the API present.
  2. V2PodBoard load(): apply re-checks requestId before writing anything, and taskLoadPendingRef stays set until a deferred apply really runs. An edit that lands in the gap therefore reloads, and the stale apply is skipped. Paths that apply immediately (no move, phone, no API or reduced motion) still clear the flag, through apply or finally.

Verified by mutation: with the guard in apply removed, the new test "an edit that lands while a glide waits..." fails, and it passes again once the guard is restored. The board suites and the theme test pass (51/51).

GATE: PASS

Clear showSpinner before paint so the reveal does not flicker.

When the load finishes, waiting becomes false. This useEffect then clears showSpinner. Passive effects can run after the browser paints. This sequence results:

  1. The first commit paints the transcript at full opacity next to the spinner.
  2. showSpinner becomes false.
  3. The layout effect sets revealed, and .v2-chat__messages--reveal starts at opacity: 0 because of backwards fill.

The reader sees content, then a fade from transparent, for about one frame. This defeats the "fades in once" intent.

Use useLayoutEffect here. Both state updates then flush before paint. useLayoutEffect is already imported.

🐛 Proposed fix
-  useEffect(() => {
+  useLayoutEffect(() => {
     if (!waiting) {
       setShowSpinner(false);

     }
     const timer = window.setTimeout(() => setShowSpinner(true), SPINNER_DELAY_MS);
     return () => window.clearTimeout(timer);
   }, [waiting]);

The existing fake-timer tests in V2ChatMotion.test.tsx should still pass with this change.

Add a presence test for the .v2-fold layout rules.

These rules are load-bearing layout CSS:

  • The grid-template-rows 0fr/1fr row.
  • .v2-fold > .v2-fold__inner { min-height: 0 }. Without it, the 0fr row cannot collapse.
  • The overflow: clip and overflow-clip-margin rules that apply only during the animation phases.

jsdom has no layout engine. V2Fold.test.tsx checks only class names and the DOM. v2-motion.test.ts has no assertion on .v2-fold. A change that removes min-height: 0 or the clip rule would pass the whole suite, and the fold would stop collapsing or would start clipping focus rings.

Add presence assertions for these rules in frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts.

As per path instructions: "Load-bearing layout CSS (overflow, scroll containment, flex sizing) needs a presence test in frontend/src/v2/tests/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts".

Add the required presence assertion for drawer overlay clipping.

The v2 guidance requires presence assertions for load-bearing layout CSS because jsdom cannot detect overflow clipping. The drawer test does not assert this exact overflow: hidden declaration.

Suggested test assertion
   expect(ruleBody(boardCss, '.v2-feature--board .v2-board__overlay--drawer')).toContain('justify-content: flex-end');
+  expect(ruleBody(boardCss, '.v2-feature--board .v2-board__overlay.v2-board__overlay--drawer')).toContain('overflow: hidden');
