feat(graph): constant readers, callback references and chained calls; free-only bare calls; cypher list indexing - #861

… shape PHP FQCNs, regexes and date formats no longer become PathLiteral nodes. Closes FU-2026-10-22-912dc51dcfc2.
Negative numeric literals now parse too, so [-1] and WHERE x > -3 work. Closes FU-2026-10-22-fcf7c6599d5d.
…the superseded generation Every sweep takes a dry_run flag; a forced index sweeps the repo's stale same-SHA generations while keeping the one it just published. Closes FU-2026-10-22-3277e4242b4e, FU-2026-10-22-d4d7cda5555d.
…quences
An escape splits a double-quoted string into several content children.
PHP kept the last one ("C:\\x\\f.txt" read as f.txt); Ruby and Swift
kept the first (C:), so the path was dropped. Found by the 14-language
backslash tests of FU-2026-10-22-912dc51dcfc2.
…orpus_digest A flow on a 589-file corpus spent ~35 KB of a 38 KB payload on hashes of files it never mentions. corpus_digest is one hash over every file, so the edit hook still sees a change to a file outside the map. Closes FU-2026-10-22-5f880544b34a.
… call
call_user_func('App\\Rows::hero'), [Rows::class, 'hero'], [$this, 'm'] and
Ruby send(:helper) / obj.send(:helper) record the callee an ordinary call
would; an invalid literal keeps its blind spot.
Closes FU-2026-10-22-cae46d5c7b80.
…ions only at Global Laravel's global config() bound a private test method config() at 0.7 (896 edges, 191 from prod). JS/TS/Go stay unchanged: their parsers still write some member calls as a bare name. Refs FU-2026-10-22-dd27e2561be2.
…P self::/static::/parent:: fallbacks are member calls The overlay re-resolver now drops methods from a bare PHP/Python/Rust/C call's Tier-3 candidates, as the index does. A scoped call whose class does not declare the method (a trait method, an unknown parent, $cls::m()) now records an untyped member call instead of a bare name, which the new rule would no longer bind. Closes FU-2026-10-22-dd27e2561be2.
…ites A receiver call never binds a top-level def, so the receiver forms target a class method; bare `helper` without parentheses is no call in Ruby.
…ed as an argument get edges A: a read of a module-level/static constant emits ReadsField reason value_read (same-file 1.0, import 0.95, global-unique 0.7). B: a function passed by name (callback, method reference) emits References reason function_reference from the registering function, never a Calls edge. Parameters and locals shadow. 14-language tests. Closes FU-2026-10-22-211bb553d7e3, FU-2026-10-22-593f351f77cf.
…attr fan-out FastAPI Depends(get_db) now also yields a certain function_reference edge, so it no longer isolates a low-confidence path. Drop an unused import.
…llee's return type
Parsers record Foo.create().bar() as CallSite::ChainedMember{inner, fallback};
the resolver binds bar on create's declared return type through the
receiver ladder, else resolves the old entry. The overlay reads return
types from graph.bin's FunctionMeta; no stored format changed. Generic
returns (Promise<Foo>, Vec<Foo>) keep today's behaviour. 13 languages with
methods, plus a C nested-call test.
Closes FU-2026-10-22-67874c602c84.
…egment; Dart methods carry their return type The JS parser writes a chained fallback as the whole callee text (new Foo().bar). Dart method_declaration nests function_signature under method_signature, so methods had no return type; a written-type-less static method put `static` in the return_type field.
The value-read scan compared each node's kind and each child's field name against up to 30 strings. On vscode that added about 35% to the field-read walk (2.74s vs 2.00s CPU over 8000 files). A per-file table indexed by kind_id and field_id now holds those classes, so the walk compares strings once per distinct kind and field. The walk now costs 2.04s, and the graph is unchanged: same node and edge counts, same sorted dump of the 20,345 value_read and function_reference edges.
…ty; subscript columns name their index collect(x)[0] used to parse into a per-row Subscript that the executor did not group, and the aggregate's eval error became Null on every row. It is a parse error again, naming the WITH ... AS xs RETURN xs[0] form. n['name'] now reads the property as n.name does instead of Null. Two subscripts of one base got the same default column name (xs[]), so ORDER BY sorted by the wrong one; the name now carries the index.
The in-flight guard skipped every dir younger than 10 s except the one just published, so two forced builds within 10 s kept both generations. A lower generation of the published SHA is superseded, not in flight; a build still writing that SHA keeps its .building marker, which skips the whole SHA. The test now publishes twice without ageing the first dir.
…fixes win over metacharacters; PHP interpolation yields no value
An escaped FQCN with a leading backslash ("\\App\\Models\\User") passed the
UNC rule. A drive-prefixed path holding + or $ (Notepad++, c$ admin
shares) was rejected as a regex. A PHP encapsed string with a member,
subscript or braced interpolation copied that code into the value; it
now yields no value, as a plain $var interpolation already did.
…sure is no chain in Go, Python, Swift A JS chained site kept the whole receiver text as its fallback, so a 200-call builder chain stored 72 MB in one file's parse cache. The fallback is now the member name, as in TypeScript; resolve_chain took the last segment anyway. In Go, Python and Swift a chain whose inner callee is a local or parameter closure took a same-named module function's return type; it is now the plain site, as Kotlin and Dart already did.
… and class constants resolve by owner
Name scan (calls.rs + per-language specs):
- a method reference keeps scanning field reads below it (F2)
- PHP $var is never a constant (F3); JS/TS destructuring declares (F4)
- Kotlin named-argument labels, Python global statements (F6, F7)
- Go map-literal keys are expressions (cx7); aliased imports pass the prefilter (cx5)
- C# tuple / LINQ let, Java type / record patterns, Python case captures,
*rest and keyword-pattern labels declare names (F11)
- PHP string callables (array_map('fmt'), usort($x, 'Cls::m')) reference the function (S9)
- Ruby send(:name=) / operator symbols are valid method names (F13)
Resolver (builder.rs resolve_name_ref):
- a bare name reaches a constant its class inherits (HeritageScoped) (cx6)
- Go import names never resolve to a global value (F5)
- a type-owned constant is no bare read outside languages that allow it (R4);
PHP class constants now carry their class as owner
…s type library returns as external - The free-only rule (PHP/Python/Rust/C bare call reaches no method) now holds at the same-file and heritage tiers, not only global (R3); the overlay keeps it across its retry (R5) - A chained call types its receiver with the callee file's imports (Python/TS/JS); other languages bind only a type the callee's directory declares, so a library return type never binds a project namesake (R1) - Python sym.attr.m() is an untyped member call, not a bare call (R2)
…ack target The type-member guard rejected every owned target, and a function declared inside another (TypeScript 'function update' handed to 'r.map(update)') carries the enclosing function as its owner. vscode lost 976 such function_reference edges. The guard now applies only when the owner is not a callable of the target's file.
…ction_reference reasons
Giving PHP class constants their class as owner_class dropped their File -Defines-> edge (scope_defines skips owned nodes) while class_membership linked only Property members, so 428 constants of a Laravel repo had no incoming edge. An owned Const now gets HasProperty from its enclosing class / interface / trait; enum constants stay unowned and keep Defines.
…ructuring targets
- A bare function name in PHP/Python/Rust/C (array_map('fmt', $xs))
names no method at the own-type, inherited, same-file or global tier.
- passed_callable reads a named `callback:` argument, keeps the string's
namespace, and yields nothing where the file declares the builtin's name.
- A JS/TS destructuring assignment (`({ data: current } = res)`) neither
reads nor declares the names it writes; a default value is still read.
- Two types of the owner's name in one file skip the inherited tier.
- A PHP 4 constructor no longer exempts its class's constants from R4.
- Share the string-callable parse between call_user_func and array_map;
stamp PHP const owners only when a const lacks one; fix NameRefSpec docs.
…pick - CallSite::reaches_free_only in ecp-core replaces the index and overlay copies. - lookup_call_in_file filters methods in its iterator instead of collecting decls_in_file for every free-only bare call. - declares_type_beside drops its redundant same-file pre-check. - The overlay converts a callee file's imports once, not per chained call. - Chained-member docs state that a type from another directory binds nothing.
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to
|
A Dart callee file reaches the fallthrough return-type arms only without imports. It is a part file, whose types come from its library's scope, or a library that sees no other project library. Neither a same-directory file nor a unique project namesake is visible to it, so return Unknown and leave the call to the parser fallback, as main did. This covers URI and named part-of directives without a new import representation. Adds named part-of negatives and a library-type recall control in the index and overlay suites.
…-type edges F5: an include that resolves but does not declare the type now falls back to a same-directory declaration for C++, as a precompiled header or a transitive include reaches a header the graph does not follow. An ambiguous include stays conclusive: imported_file_type reports Unique, Missing or Ambiguous instead of collapsing the last two. F6: rustc rejects a name two globs both supply (E0659), so a local glob hit outranks a direct glob the graph cannot open. Named external imports and external re-exports stay authoritative. R1: assert the Namespace -> Const Defines edge for a braced PHP namespace.
… no name Go: `import _ "x"` and `import . "x"` kept the marker as imported_name, so imports_edges resolved a symbol named `_` (stringer's `func _()`) as the import target. The marker stays in alias only; imported_name is the package path's last segment again. Rust: a bare first-hop `use config::T` beside `mod config;` is anchored as `self::config`, as the nested hop already was (one helper for both). Both hops stop at the first module file that exists, so the overlay no longer probes the parent-directory fallback after a hit and reports a crate-root namesake as ambiguous. Dart: correct the guard comment; sibling parts are in library scope.

…project package imports Three regressions against 0.16.2, found in review of PR 861: - Go: names a `:=` range clause, receive case or type switch declares now shadow an import of the same name. An `=` assignment keeps the outer variable and its type; a type-switch alias takes effect after its guard. - JavaScript/TypeScript: a call or `new` receiver whose type stays unknown falls back to UntypedMember, so no import, base class or free function binds `fetch(u).json()`. - Dart: `package:<name>/<path>` resolves to `<root>/lib/<path>` under the importer's nearest ancestor holding that file; otherwise the import stays external.

Summary
ecp impactnow sees bare constant reads and functions passed as values in all 14 mainstream languages, and a member call on a call's result (make().run()) binds through the callee's declared return type. Bare calls in PHP, Python, Rust and C stop binding unrelated same-named methods. Cypher gains list indexing and slicing.Door: two-way.
git revertrestores the old behaviour. The builder fingerprint (+schema20) and the parser fingerprint make every cachedgraph.binrebuild on upgrade and again after a revert; no NodeKind, RelType or rkyv discriminant changes, so no stored data needs a migration.Blast radius (
