Keep snapshot files honest and comparisons true to the machine - #95
Second package of fixes from the business-logic report: snapshot files and comparisons.
What changes for a user
R11 - bws snapshot create without --force no longer replaces a snapshot that appeared under the same name while the machine was read. The move itself refuses to replace (AtomicFile.WriteNew), and a second question names what arrived.
S02 - a snapshot larger than this version reads back (64 MB) is not written. Reading asks the size of the path and again of the open file, and refuses a path that is not a file on a disk.
S01 - a byte order mark only chooses which strict decoder reads the rest, so a broken byte behind a mark is refused instead of becoming U+FFFD.
S06 - an entry that holds a value for a field it lists as not read, lists a field both as refused and never asked about, or has an empty name is refused when read, naming the entry and the field.
R06 - the launch command is compared with its path without case and its arguments exactly.
S03 - comparing with this machine asks the service manager by name about every entry the reading lacks. One it still holds is "still there" (own heading in text, a new unlisted key at the end of --json, not drift), one it does not hold is removed, also across a difference in elevation.
S04 - the caveat about fields neither side holds says "at least one entry".
S05 - in the window, a comparison that finishes after the middle of the window changed no longer takes it back, and saving a snapshot leaves a form opened afresh meanwhile.
Contract
One key added at the end of snapshot diff --json, unlisted. Meaning changes: case of arguments in binaryPath is now a configuration difference, and --live sorts missing entries by asking the manager (see CHANGELOG).
Checks
Narrow test runs: core 201, CLI 58, GUI 128 of 129 (the one red is a clipboard held by another process on the test machine), integration 18, architecture guards 110.
Mutation registry: 30 new entries, 11 re-anchored, all caught (40 of 40, then 2 of 2 after the unlisted key). Stale check clean.
Not run locally: the full suites and the full mutation registry (CI).
Live comparisons now distinguish services that are still held by Windows but absent from its current list from services that have been removed. These entries appear separately and do not count as drift.
CLI comparison output identifies unlisted entries and clarifies when fields were not compared.
Bug Fixes
Snapshot creation avoids overwriting files that appear during writing, rejects snapshots larger than the supported limit, and provides clearer refusal messages.
Invalid or contradictory snapshots are rejected. Launch arguments are compared case-sensitively while executable paths remain case-insensitive.
Late snapshot and comparison results no longer replace newer window content.
- A snapshot written without --force goes through a move that may not
replace, so a file that appears at the name while the machine is read
stays where it is and is named, rather than being replaced after the
question said nothing was there.
- One write path for the command line and the window checks the size of
the text in the bytes it writes, and refuses a snapshot this version
could not read back.
- Reading a snapshot asks its size of the path and again of the open
file, refuses a path that is not a file on a disk, and reads a byte
order mark itself so a strict decoder reads the rest - a broken byte
behind a mark is refused rather than replaced.
- A snapshot entry that holds a value for a field it also lists as not
read, lists one field both as refused and never asked about, or has an
empty name is refused when read, naming the entry and the field.
- A launch command is compared with its path without case and its
arguments exactly. The value comparison moved to its own file.
- A comparison with this machine asks the service manager by name about
every entry the reading lacks. One it still holds is unlisted - its own
heading in text, among uncertain in --json, not drift - and one it does
not hold is removed, also across a difference in elevation.
- The caveat about fields neither side holds says at least one entry.
- In the window, a comparison that comes back after the middle of the
window changed does not take it back, and saving a snapshot leaves a
form opened afresh meanwhile.

Walkthrough
Snapshot handling now enforces size limits, stricter decoding and validation, and safer writes. Comparisons add live service-manager checks and distinct value-comparison rules. CLI and GUI outputs report unlisted entries, and GUI turn tracking prevents stale asynchronous results from replacing newer views.
Writes reject snapshots above the reader’s size ceiling. Without force, writes preserve a target that appears before the atomic move. Reads use bounded strict decoding, and the CLI and GUI report size and write refusals.
Snapshot validation rejects entries with empty service names and contradictory field-status metadata.
Live comparison and value semantics src/Bws.Core/IScmCatalog.cs, src/Bws.Core/WindowsScmCatalog.Held.cs, src/Bws.Core/Planning/DependentsAskedOnce.cs, src/Bws.Core/BinaryPathResolver.cs, src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.cs, src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.Unseen.cs, src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.Values.cs, src/Bws.Cli/Program.cs, src/Bws.Cli/SnapshotFiles.cs, src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/Catalogue.Machines.cs, tests/Bws.Core.Tests/Fakes/FakeScmCatalog.cs, tests/Bws.Core.Tests/LaunchCommandComparisonTests.cs, tests/Bws.Core.Tests/LiveComparisonTests.cs, tests/Bws.Core.Tests/RequiredByPassParallelTests.cs, tests/Bws.Gui.Tests/LiveMachine.cs, tests/Bws.Integration.Tests/HeldContractTests.cs, tests/mutation/entries.ps1
Live comparisons ask the service manager about missing entries. Held-but-unlisted entries are distinct from removed entries. Value comparison treats designated lists and fields according to their comparison rules, including case-sensitive launch arguments and a case-insensitive executable path.
CLI JSON and text output and GUI diff rows include unlisted entries. The CLI combines unlisted and uncertain entries in its incomplete-comparison count. Resource text and tests cover the labels and comparison caveat wording.
Snapshot and comparison operations record a view turn. Comparison results are not displayed after the view changes, and a completed write clears the form only if its turn is still current.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds tests for each major changed behavior. Core tests cover atomic non-replacing writes, snapshot size and strict decoding, contradictory entries, launch-command comparison, and live manager classification. CLI tests cover snapshot-write refusals and unlisted text/JSON output. GUI tests cover late results, form preservation, unlisted rows, and oversized snapshots. Integration tests cover WindowsScmCatalog.ReadHeld. No test cases were deleted, skipped, or weakened; the changed JSON assertion was updated for the new trailing unlisted field.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The pull-request diff adds no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env paths. Added-line scans found no credentials, tokens, API keys, private URLs, personal email addresses, local user paths, or debug-output calls. The Windows paths and test fixture names are generic test data, not local user paths or credentials.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS — The PR changes GUI resources and view-model logic only. It does not change XAML, themes, or WPF code-behind. The added GUI code contains no literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, paddings, corner radii, or duplicated controls.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file-parsing condition is introduced. SnapshotOnDisk.TryReadText rejects non-seekable streams, checks the 64 MiB limit before StreamReader.ReadToEnd, and uses strict UTF-8/UTF-16/UTF-32 decoders. SnapshotJson.TryRead uses System.Text.Json.JsonSerializer.Deserialize<Snapshot> with a concrete type and no polymorphic or arbitrary-type settings. DiffJson and the changed embedded translations use JSON serialization/parsing only; AsciiJson escapes output. No XML, formula-bearing CSV/XLSX, external-entity parsing, or unbounded file read is introduced.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not modify the listed system state. WindowsScmCatalog.ReadHeld only opens the Service Control Manager and services with SC_MANAGER_CONNECT and SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS to read presence. The other writes target user-selected snapshot files through AtomicFile; they do not change Windows services, registry, firewall, proxy, system time, drivers, or process state.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
The prior performance defect remains. src/Bws.Core/WindowsScmCatalog.Held.cs:40 runs Held through a serial names.Where(...); Held performs one synchronous OpenService FFI call per missing name at lines 57–59. SnapshotDiff.Missing calls ReadHeld for every missing entry at src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.Unseen.cs:30–32. The changed live-comparison path can therefore incur serial latency for a large missing set. Existing ReadAll uses bounded Parallel. For with indexed result storage at src/Bws.Core/WindowsScmCatalog.cs:132–136, showing the repository already has the required pattern.
Resolution
Implement bounded parallelism in WindowsScmCatalog.ReadHeld, using one manager handle and a result slot per input index. Preserve input order when building the returned list. Keep the NUL-name exclusion and existing OpenService error semantics.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
The live comparison adds a potentially long manager lookup without cancellation or progress. CompareAsync runs Compared in Task.Run (src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/Snapshotting.cs:196), and the new path calls ReadHeld for every missing entry (SnapshotDiff.Unseen.cs:30-40). ReadHeld opens each service synchronously (WindowsScmCatalog.Held.cs:40,57-59). The window close guard waits only for planning work (MainWindow.Carrying.cs:266-285), so this snapshot task can continue after the window closes. Busy prevents duplicate starts but does not cancel or join this work.
Resolution
Add a cancellation token owned by Snapshotting and cancel it when the window starts closing. Pass the token through CompareAsync, TryAgainstMachine, IScmCatalog.ReadHeld, and the ReadHeld loop, including each service-manager call where supported. Track and await the snapshot task before allowing the window to close, and suppress all post-close UI updates. Add progress reporting if the lookup can exceed the normal short-operation threshold.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The prior text inconsistency remains. The CLI labels the new state “Still there” (src/Bws.Cli/Resources/cli.en.json:319), but the GUI labels the same manager-held, unlisted state “Not in this machine's list” (src/Bws.Gui/Resources/gui.en.json:545). The GUI text is also awkward: “leaves out of the list what this account may not query.” DiffText and DiffLines render these entries as the same comparison category, so users see different names for one concept.
Resolution
Use one label in both interfaces, such as “Still there”. Rewrite the GUI text as: “Windows still holds this entry, but this account cannot query it, so it is missing from the list.” Use a consistent row value such as “there, still there”. Update the corresponding CLI text and tests.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
The prior leak remains in the reviewed code. AtomicFile.WriteNew calls Land(..., replace: false), which creates beside and catches target-exists IOException. It then calls Delete(beside), but Delete suppresses both IOException and UnauthorizedAccessException before WriteNew returns false. If the temporary file is locked or deletion is denied, each normal refusal can leave .<target>.<guid>.tmp in the snapshot directory. This is a PR-introduced accumulation path in src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/AtomicFile.cs:98-125,163-178.
Resolution
Make temporary-file cleanup explicit and non-silent. Retry deletion when appropriate and do not return the normal refusal until cleanup succeeds. If cleanup still fails, surface the cleanup failure and provide deferred cleanup for the exact temporary path. Ensure the temporary file is deleted before reporting refusal.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR adds backward-incompatible public API changes without a Breaking changes section or migration guidance. IScmCatalog gains the mandatory ReadHeld(IReadOnlyList<string>) member, which breaks external implementations. Public positional record SnapshotDiff gains a tenth Unlisted constructor parameter, which breaks existing nine-argument constructor calls. The repository updates its own implementations and callers, but the diff contains no compatibility overload, default interface implementation, optional capability interface, or migration fallback. The feature behavior itself is documented in CHANGELOG.md and the PR description; no separate unrelated feature or duplicate helper was established.
Resolution
Add a ## Breaking changes section to the PR description and document migration for IScmCatalog.ReadHeld and the SnapshotDiff constructor. Prefer compatibility: expose ReadHeld through an optional capability interface or a safe default, and add the previous nine-argument SnapshotDiff constructor with Unlisted defaulting to an empty list.

A comparison with this machine writes the entries the service manager
still holds, and did not list to this account, under a new "unlisted"
key at the end of the document, rather than among "uncertain". A script
now tells "the manager says it is there" from "the other side may not
have been shown it", as a person reading the two headings does.
"uncertain" keeps the meaning it had, and "unlisted" never counts
towards "differs".

No legacy compatibility issue is established.
The tracked schema 4 and 5 snapshots contain no contradiction rejected by Snapshot.BrokenEntries. The compatibility tests also cover both files through SnapshotJson.TryRead. No inspected writer or fixture shows that older snapshots used the rejected shape.
The terminal and the window now name entries Windows still holds, and
does not list to this account, the same way: "Still there", in a
shorter sentence.
A test holds that a folder appearing at the snapshot's path while the
machine is read is named as a folder, not as a snapshot already there.
Asking the manager about missing names stays one name at a time, and
the reason is written beside it with what it was measured to cost:
about 31 ms for 781 real names in a row and 17 ms over 16 processors,
and the same 14 ms either way for names that do not exist. The
documentation of a write that may not replace says where its promise
