Keep each trigger whole in snapshots and machine output - #97
A snapshot keeps what exactly each trigger waits for. Every trigger now carries its subtype (the device interface class, the ETW provider, or which half of a kind it is, such as a port opening rather than closing) and its data (the RPC interface, the hardware ID, the port and protocol), beside the kind and the action it carried before. Until now two machines whose triggers waited for different things compared as the same.
[contract] in three places:
Snapshot schema 7. Each element of triggers gains subtype (lower case GUID, null when the manager points at none) and data, a list of {"type": ..., "values": [...]}. Types: Binary (lower case hexadecimal), String (as the manager holds it, a run of strings as several values), Level (decimal), KeywordAny and KeywordAll (0x and sixteen digits), Unknown (hexadecimal). Every item has at least one value. Versions 4 to 6 are still read.
bws list --json and bws show --json carry the same shape, since both write the one entry document.
bws diff --json gains triggerDetailDiffers at the end of caveats.
Comparing
Triggers are compared without regard to order but with case: the documentation says a network endpoint trigger fires on an exact match of its data, and the manager hands that data over in mixed case.
A version 7 snapshot beside a version 4 to 6 one compares triggers by kind and action only and says so once, in the terminal, in the window (both wordings) and in the JSON. A trigger added, removed or turned from start to stop is still reported.
Reading
The walk now follows three levels of pointers inside the block the service manager filled. A subtype or data item outside the block, or a level, keyword or string of a size its type does not allow, refuses the whole field with ERROR_INVALID_DATA rather than dropping the item. A trigger missing one of its items waits for something else, and the reading would present that as fact. The walk moved into ManagerBlocks.Triggers.cs.
Checks
Tests run narrowly: core 152 (snapshot, diff, document, trigger and block classes), new TriggerBlockTests, CLI 71 (diff, listing, JSON and text classes), window 197 plus TwoSnapshotsTests 7, integration SnapshotContractTests 14, architecture 214/214. The full suite runs in CI.
New kept copy snapshot-schema-7.json. Beside 6 it differs only in the triggers of two specimens and the schema number.
Mutations: 7 new, 2 moved with the walk, the schema entry re-anchored. 10 of 10 caught.
Shape ceilings: the longest method went from 68 to 66 lines, and the crowd near it was set to 15 by the maintainer's decision. The band moved down with the ceiling and took in four methods this change does not touch.
Compared with sc qtriggerinfo on a real machine: 804 entries, 260 triggers and 209 data items, no difference. One subtype was not compared, on a trigger whose kind neither tool can name.
Not in this change
Showing the subtype and data to a person in bws show, the window's details panel and a readable comparison row is a separate slice.
Snapshots now retain each service trigger’s subtype and data, and CLI JSON listings and details include these values.
Comparisons between newer snapshots detect exact trigger-detail changes, including differences in letter case.
Compatibility
Snapshots from versions 4–6 remain readable. When comparing older snapshots with newer ones, triggers are compared by kind and action, with a caveat shown in comparison results.
Older tool versions cannot read version 7 snapshots.
A trigger now carries its subtype - the device interface class, the ETW
provider, or the documented constant saying which half of a kind it is -
and its data items, beside the kind and the action. Until now a snapshot
held the kind and the action only, so two machines whose triggers waited
for different RPC interfaces or devices compared as the same.
Snapshots move to schema 7 and versions 4 to 6 are still read. Each data
item is a type and a list of values written as text: a run of strings as
several values, bytes as lower case hexadecimal, a level in decimal, a
keyword as 0x and sixteen digits. The same shape is in list --json and
show --json, since both use one entry document.
The reading walks three levels of pointers inside one block the manager
filled. A subtype or a data item outside that block, or a size its type
does not allow, refuses the whole field with ERROR_INVALID_DATA rather
than dropping the item, because a trigger missing one of its items waits
for something else.
Triggers are compared without regard to order but with case, because a
network endpoint trigger fires on an exact match of its data. A version 7
snapshot beside an older one compares triggers by kind and action only and
says so once, in the text, in the window and as triggerDetailDiffers at
the end of the caveats of diff --json.

Walkthrough
Snapshots now retain each service trigger’s subtype and typed data in schema version 7. Comparisons between schema 7 snapshots include exact trigger details, including case. Comparisons with older schemas use trigger kind and action and report the limitation in CLI and GUI output.

Schema 7 comparisons retain trigger spelling, so case differences count as changes. When only one snapshot has schema 7 trigger details, comparison uses kind and action and sets the trigger-detail caveat.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title clearly describes the main user-visible and code-level change: preserving complete trigger details in snapshots and machine-readable output. It is specific, descriptive, and within the length limit.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR changes runtime behavior in trigger parsing, trigger document serialization, schema handling, comparison, and CLI/GUI caveats. It adds or updates tests for each area: TriggerBlockTests covers subtype, all data types, empty strings, missing fields, bounds, counts, and invalid sizes; SnapshotGoldenTests covers schema 7 output, schema 6 compatibility, kind/action comparison, and case-sensitive detail comparison; DiffOutputTests and TwoSnapshotsTests cover CLI and GUI caveats; SnapshotContractTests covers schema 7. No test files were deleted, and no tests were skipped. The only removed assertions were replaced to account for the new trailing caveat and schema version. The shape-ceiling threshold increase has explicit justification in both the PR description and the changed test documentation.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
No prohibited leftovers were introduced. The changed-file inventory contains no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude, or .env files. The added code has no debug calls, credentials, tokens, URLs, IPs, personal email addresses, or user-specific paths. The golden snapshot repeats synthetic Windows paths and placeholder identities already present in schema-6 fixtures; it adds no private machine or user data.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The pull request changes only GUI caveat text and DiffCaveats selection logic. It does not change XAML, code-behind, or control definitions, and it adds no literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, paddings, corner radii, or copied controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. The new trigger reader performs bounded linear walks over the manager-provided buffer and its trigger/data-item arrays. Snapshot comparison adds one bounded trigger-detail projection per matched entry; the existing per-entry JSON comparison and field sorting remain linear or sorting-based, with no new nested collection scan. The CLI and GUI changes only add one caveat line. No new UI I/O, polling, per-item external call, or non-virtualized collection is present.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No explicit desktop-robustness failure is introduced. The PR adds trigger decoding, snapshot mapping, comparison, and caveat presentation; it adds no working-directory asset loads, settings/data writes, network calls, destructive actions, background tasks, or elevation changes. New numeric trigger formatting uses CultureInfo.InvariantCulture in ManagerBlocks.Triggers.cs, and subtype formatting is invariant in EntryDocument.cs. Malformed trigger buffers are bounded and return absent/denied outcomes instead of being read past the block. Snapshot writes continue through existing AtomicFile paths.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No explicit safe-file-parsing failure is introduced. The PR serializes trigger data with System.Text.Json; bws list --json, show --json, and snapshots emit data as JSON strings, not executable or formula-bearing CSV/XLSX. Snapshot input remains bounded by SnapshotOnDisk.Biggest (64 MiB), uses strict text decoding, and catches JsonException. The new native trigger parser validates buffer bounds, pointer ranges, record counts, item counts, and type-specific lengths before reading. The changed translation files are embedded JSON data, and no new path resolution, external-entity handling, arbitrary-type deserialization, or archive/XML parser was added.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
PASS. The PR does not modify system state. The changed code reads service trigger configuration with QueryServiceConfig2W, parses the returned buffer, and updates snapshots and output. The diff contains no service-control, registry, firewall, proxy, system-time, process-injection, or driver writes. Reversibility requirements do not apply.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds only comparison caveat text and machine-readable fields. The CLI and GUI messages state the cause and the comparison limitation: older snapshots lack exact trigger details, so comparison uses kind and action. The live-machine and two-snapshot GUI variants use consistent wording. No new controls, tooltips, vague buttons, errors, or confirmations were added.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
The changed runtime code adds only bounded parsing and managed collections. ReadTriggerBuffer pins the input array with a fixed statement, so the pin ends when the block exits, including error returns. It does not open or retain handles, streams, timers, tasks, or native allocations. The new test helper allocates a GCHandle and releases it in finally on every path. No explicit resource leak condition is introduced.

# Contributing to Better Windows Services
## Translations of the window
Start from [`src/Bws.Gui/Resources/gui.en.json`](src/Bws.Gui/Resources/gui.en.json), which is the
file the window ships with and the only complete list of keys. Four things to know before you
spend an evening on it:
- **A file with letters outside ASCII has to be named in one test before it can enter the
repository.** A guard sweeps every shipped file for text outside plain ASCII and fails on a file
that is not on its list with a reason beside it, because a sentence in another language once
reached a public file that way. Your translation will be on that list, with the reason *a
translation of the window into Polish* - say so in the pull request and it is a one-line change,
or add it yourself in `tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/PublicSurfaceGuards.cs`.
A version 7 snapshot whose trigger has no data list, or a data item
without a type or a value, is refused when it is read. A version 7 file
always writes them, so two files missing them would compare as equal on
what neither holds. Older files never wrote the data and read as before.
A trigger and its data items are values again: equal by what they hold,
the data item by item and the strings with their case, rather than by
the list object. Until schema 7 a trigger held two enumeration values
and was equal by them.
The comment on the trigger document now says that the two schema numbers
decide whether triggers are compared by kind and action, not a missing
data list. The guard on enumerated values fails when a trigger is written
without its data list or a data item without its type, where it used to
count the absence as nothing checked.
The test pinning the range of schemas this build reads still named 4 to
6 and failed in CI. It now names 4 to 7 and refuses 8.

Three advisories against mcp 1.29.0 were published on 2026-10-27 and
turned the OSV gate red on every branch. mcp is in the scan only because
semgrep requires it, and every semgrep release up to 1.182.1, the newest
on PyPI that day, requires mcp==1.29.0 exactly, so the fixed 1.30.0
cannot be installed beside it.
Two advisories are about the MCP client and one about an MCP server's
token check. CI runs semgrep as a one-off semgrep scan, which is neither
a client nor a server. Each entry carries that reason and expires on
2026-11-16 with the other entries about semgrep's dependencies, after
which the gate is red again unless a semgrep release has moved past
mcp 1.29.0.
