Closes #11182

D1 and D3 of #11182, split from the D2 refusal on the coordinator's request: this pull request moves no spec to a refusal and edits no ledger. D2 (a []T struct field filled from borrowed storage; 73 specs refused, 66 ledger rows) is now #11218, with its own draft pull request; Closes #11182 stays here because D1 and D3 are what this fixes. Found by the RFC experiment of #11177 (section 6.1); reproduced on a t27c 0.5.2 built from master cf2d61e (compiler.rs unchanged on master since). Hand Rust: compiler.rs +25/-44; with backend_behaviour.rs and FROZEN_HASH, 29 foreign lines added and 48 deleted.

An earlier version of this body made rustc claims about the corpus outputs that came from a broken measuring loop (it named the crate after a file called *.t27.out, which rustc refuses before type checking). They are retracted; the corpus numbers below are re-measured with a valid crate name.

Probe matrix

Every cell is a spec, t27c gen-rust, rustc --crate-type lib --edition 2021; 93 cells in all, the 74 of D1 and D3 below.

defect cells wrong on master wrong now
D1 x.len next to a struct field len (24 shapes, with and without the field) 48 27 9
D3 a [N]str element passed, compared, indexed or measured 26 16 0

No cell that compiled on master is wrong now. D1 fixed: slice []const u8, []i64, written &mut [T], array parameter, array local, str parameter, str constant, a slice or array held in a struct field (h.items.len, w.buf.len), t.len in a while, in an index, beside a u32, beside c.len (both orders), the free len(x) (E0425). D3 fixed: takes(NAMES[i]), a local [N]str array, a parameter, a struct field, [N][]const u8, two arguments, a nested call, s == NAMES[0] both ways, t.name, a call returning str, NAMES[0][0], t.name[0], t.name.len beside a len field. D1 still wrong, 9 cells, 2 of them D1: an untyped local const u = t; u.len keeps the field reading (its type is not declared), and t[0..2].len, written &t[0..2].len(), loses to precedence (E0308 with or without a len field). The other 7 do not depend on a len field or are invalid cells: t.len + p.lo (usize plus u32, E0277, x2), a cell that reads a slice after moving it (E0382, x2), a typed []const u8 local initialised from a range (E0308, x2), the range cell without a len field (E0308).

Causes and fixes (bootstrap/src/compiler.rs)

  • D1: expr_to_rust, infer_int_type and the free len(x) call asked !self.field_names.contains("len"), a whole-file census: one struct with a field len switched the method form off for every base. Now len_is_method(base) asks the base's declared type (Vec<, array, &[, &'static str) when the file has such a field; a struct or an undeclared base keeps the field reading. The free call no longer depends on the census (a free len(x) is a length call in any file).
  • D3: rust_type_of answered for a plain name only, so the three places that turn text into bytes (.as_bytes() at a []const u8 argument, at a comparison with bytes, at an index) never saw NAMES[0], t.name or g(). It now answers for a name, a call, a typed struct field and an element of a typed array (Vec<T> or [T; N]); the index site shrinks from 8 lines to 1. One cause, three sites. One guard, found by re-measuring: a range slice of a str FIELD (&ac.source[a..b]) stays a &str; specs/tri/search/aho_corasick.t27 returned &[u8] from a -> str function otherwise.
  • The rules stay in Rust: they read the parser's Node tree, which no .t27 spec the compiler mounts models.

Test, red first

The cases go into specs/compiler/codegen_conformance.t27, whose header says to add the next case there and not to open a spec per bug (#8963); a new spec would also need a docs/reports/t27b_expectations.json row, which tri pr preflight demands and this change must not edit. The module now declares a struct with a field len and holds the shapes that broke. Its 2 new tests pass under Zig (t27c test-report: 18 of 18, 12 new runtime asserts, 0 vacuous) and t27b test (18 passed). The existing the_codegen_conformance_spec_compiles_and_runs_as_rust in backend_behaviour.rs prints four more values computed by the generated Rust (3 4 2 99); +3/-3 lines, no new test.

  • master's t27c on that spec: rustc rejects its Rust with 13 errors (9 E0615, 2 E0308, E0425, E0277; the commit message of 55f2b1c says 8 E0615 and one more, which is the same 13). With the fix it builds and the test passes; cargo test --release -p t27c --test backend_behaviour: 26 passed. I did not rerun the cargo test itself against a master-built t27c (the same rustc step was run by hand with master's binary).

Corpus effect (t27c gen-rust over the 2862 tracked .t27 files, master binary against this one)

  • 2766 byte-identical, 96 changed, 0 newly refused, 0 newly generating; exit 0 on 2817 files both ways.
  • The 96 hold 276 .len to .len() hunks, 416 .as_bytes() hunks and 42 hunks that carry an as usize bridge cast (a comparison such as k < needle.len now knows the right side is usize, as in a module without a len field) or several rewrites in one line. Checked file by file: with .as_bytes(), .len() and casts normalised away, 95 of the 96 equal master's output; the 96th is codegen_conformance.t27 itself (new functions).
  • rustc on the 96 (valid crate name): 0 compiled on master, 9 compile now (claw/t27f_gate, compiler/codegen_conformance, port/scripts/gen_w309, gen_w388, tri/collections/variant, tri/crypto/base32, base64, tri/search/rabin_karp, verified/corpus_merkle); errors 4036 to 3328; files with E0615 38 to 4, E0616 7 to 2, E0277 20 to 11, E0308 75 to 67, E0425 32 to 31; 89 files with fewer errors, 5 the same, 2 with more (widgets/bit_autopsy_logic, widgets/pin_map_logic): the type errors that hid the borrow checker are gone (E0308 1 to 0 in one) and rustc now reports the E0596 / E0502 it could not reach before (6 to 14 and 5 to 16 errors).
  • Committed gen/rust and bootstrap/gen/rust (120 files): none belongs to a moved spec, so none changes.

Seals

With this branch's t27c, tools/check_seal_currency.py listed 58 specs with a stale gen_hash_rust (master: 0). Re-saved with t27c seal --save (57), codegen_conformance re-sealed after its extension, and specs/ml/train_hslm.t27 by hand (only gen_hash_rust of ml_train_hslm.json): seal --save refuses on my Mac because the_profile_moves_no_bit_and_sees_the_call_order fails (36 of 37) with master's own binary too, while its Zig hash is byte-identical to the one sealed with 37 of 37 on 2026-10-19; its Rust changed by one .as_bytes(); the recorded test result is untouched. 93 seal files changed; tri seals sync-twins wrote 0. Now: coverage OK: 2941 seals, 2828 hold, 113 known-broken; currency 0 stale (2839 current, 8 sealed with gen_hash=none, as on master). Master's coverage and spec-guards check-runs at cf2d61e were success.

Own-language and FROZEN_HASH

git diff --numstat --no-renames BASE...HEAD | budget (compiled from the merge base's gen/c/policy/own_language.c): exit 0. compiler.rs +25/-44, backend_behaviour.rs +3/-3, FROZEN_HASH +1/-1: 29 foreign lines added, 48 deleted (the spec is .t27 and not counted); the path gate (check_all, exceptions from BASE) exit 0. The deletions are the code the change replaces: the multi-line census guards, the 8-line identifier-only index test, and comments the new rule makes false.

Gates and results

  • cargo check -p t27c --all-targets: exit 0. cargo build --release -p t27c: ok (the binary behind every number above). cargo test --release -p t27c --test backend_behaviour: 26 passed. • tri types ratchet: CLEAN (107 of 107); tri types classified: OK; python3 -I tools/dupe_scan.py: merge base 1632 of 17646 bodies in 632 groups, branch 1632 in 632, "no new duplicate body"; tools/check_devhome_paths.py: ok; tri hooks pre-commit and l1-check: pass; tri pr preflight --quick: exit 0, every rule that ran passed (ledgers, budget, seal, dupes, types, census, devhome, kept); added lines are ASCII, no local paths.

Found, not fixed

Not run

The full cargo test -p t27c; the corpus ratchet (tri pr preflight without --quick, t27c suite --ratchet --corpus-only: no refusal and no ledger row moved, the combined D1 + D2 head ended RATCHET: CLEAN at ledger 135 of 135, which does not speak for this diff); core_selfhost (gen-c, not touched); a Linux run; the CI jobs themselves.

…d filled from borrowed storage (Closes #11182)

Three gen-rust defects from the RFC experiment of #11177 (D1-D3), each reproduced on a t27c built from master cf2d61e (0.5.2) before any change:

D1. A struct field called `len` anywhere in the module switched the `x.len` -> `x.len()` rewrite off for EVERY base (a whole-file name census), so a slice, array, string or Vec length reached rustc as a field: E0615 / E0616, and the free `len(x)` call as E0425.
D2. A `[]T` struct field is written `Vec<T>` and a `[]T` parameter stored in it is taken by value, which moves the caller's storage (specs/tri/collections/stack.t27: `items: Vec<i64>`, `empty(storage: Vec<i64>)`); `&x` stored in one does not type-check at all.
D3. The element of a `[N]str` constant, array field or a call returning str is an `&str`; `rust_type_of` knew only plain names, so it was not turned into bytes where `[]const u8` is expected (E0308) or indexed (E0277).

Fix, all in bootstrap/src/compiler.rs, hand Rust net -10 (+40/-50), FROZEN_HASH moved:
- rust_type_of now answers for a name, a call, a typed struct field and an element of a typed array; len_is_method uses it, so with a `len` field in the file `x.len` is a method only where x is a slice/array/string/Vec and stays a field for a struct or an unknown base. The free `len(x)` no longer depends on the census.
- compile_rust refuses `S{ .f = p }` / `s.f = p` where f is a `[]T` field and p a `[]T` parameter or `&x`, with the field named: a borrow needs a lifetime on the struct and on every constructor, which this back end does not write, so it is refused, not guessed. `[]const u8` (text), `[T]`, arrays and a field nothing fills from borrowed storage are not refused.

Test, red first: specs/compiler/rust_slice_lowering.t27 (a `len` field beside every shape; its Zig/t27b tests pass, 13 runtime asserts) is compiled with rustc by backend_behaviour.rs, with fixtures bootstrap/tests/fixtures/rust_slice_fields (4 refuse_*, 4 keep_*). On master the test fails with 11 rustc errors; with the fix it passes.

… the 66 it now refuses (Closes #11182)

The emitter change of the previous commit moves gen-rust output, so the seals follow, as tools/check_seal_coverage.py (gen-drift, 208 seal files) and tools/check_seal_currency.py (76 stale gen_hash_rust) demanded when run with this branch's t27c.

- 48 specs whose Rust changed only by `.len` -> `.len()`, `.as_bytes()` added and `as usize` bridge casts (every changed hunk of all 85 changed outputs, 49 of them with a seal, reduces to those three; 0 other): re-saved with `t27c seal --save`, twins in sync (`tri seals sync-twins` writes 0 files).
- 72 specs gen-rust now refuses: re-saved with `--force`, which records gen_hash_rust=none and leaves the other hashes and the test results as they were, the state 8 other seals already hold.
- specs/ml/train_hslm.t27 (Rust changed by one `.as_bytes()`): `seal --save` refuses on this Mac because its test the_profile_moves_no_bit_and_sees_the_call_order fails (36 of 37) with master's own binary too, while the Zig output hash is byte-identical to the one sealed with 37 of 37 on 2026-10-19. Only gen_hash_rust of ml_train_hslm.json is edited, by hand; the recorded test result is untouched.
- specs/compiler/rust_slice_lowering.t27 is sealed (new).
- docs/reports/suite_expectations.json: 66 gen-rust rows (reason, #11182, expiry 2026-11-30), max_entries 69 -> 135, the reason in _why_entries_rose. The 73 refused specs are 66 here, 3 already ledgered under parse-no-discard, 4 outside specs/. All 73 failed rustc on master.

Locally with this branch's t27c: check_seal_coverage OK (2939 seals, 2826 hold, 113 known-broken), check_seal_currency 0 stale, `t27c suite --ratchet --corpus-only` RATCHET: CLEAN (ledger 135 of 135, 0 unexpected).

Takes analog M3c-4 and M5c (#11214, #11215), which touch only specs/analog; compiler.rs is unchanged on master.

…s to #11218 (Closes #11182)

Split on the coordinator's request: this branch is now the slice-length and string-element fixes only. D2 (a []T struct field filled from borrowed storage: the refusal, its fixtures, the 66 suite_expectations.json rows and the --force seals) moves to a separate draft pull request for #11218, because a +66 ledger rise is a policy decision.

- compiler.rs: the D2 refusal is gone; return_unsized is back (it was inlined only to pay budget). rust_type_of and len_is_method (D1, D3) are unchanged except for one guard found by re-measuring: a RANGE slice of a str FIELD (`&ac.source[a..b]`) stays a &str; only an integer index of a field, element or call result, and any index of a plain name (as before), becomes bytes. specs/tri/search/aho_corasick.t27 returned `&[u8]` from a `-> str` function otherwise.
- backend_behaviour.rs: the test keeps only the spec built and run with rustc (`slice_len`, `array_len`, `name_bytes`, `name_first_byte` computed by the generated Rust).
- bootstrap/tests/fixtures/rust_slice_fields, docs/reports/suite_expectations.json and the seals of the 72 refused specs are back to master's.

…d string-element fixes move, and seal the new spec (Closes #11182)

With this branch's t27c, tools/check_seal_currency.py listed 58 specs with a stale gen_hash_rust (master: 0). Every changed hunk of the 96 changed outputs reduces to `.len` -> `.len()`, `.as_bytes()` added and `as usize` bridge casts (plus the free `len(x)` call in the new spec). Re-saved with `t27c seal --save`; `tri seals sync-twins` writes 0 files.

specs/ml/train_hslm.t27 (Rust changed by one `.as_bytes()`): `seal --save` refuses on this Mac because its test the_profile_moves_no_bit_and_sees_the_call_order fails (36 of 37) with master's own binary too, while its Zig output hash is byte-identical to the one sealed with 37 of 37 on 2026-10-19. Only gen_hash_rust of .trinity/seals/ml_train_hslm.json is edited, by hand; the recorded test result is untouched.

Locally: check_seal_coverage OK (2941 seals, 2828 hold, 113 known-broken), check_seal_currency 0 stale (2839 current, 8 sealed with gen_hash=none, as on master).

…rmance.t27, not a new spec (Closes #11182)

That file's header says to add the next case there and not to open a spec per bug (#8963), and `tri pr preflight` fails an added spec without a docs/reports/t27b_expectations.json row, which this change must not edit. The module now declares a struct with a field `len` (LenCell) and holds the shapes that broke: a slice, written slice, array and free `len(x)` length, a `len` field read next to a slice length, a text field's length and bytes, and the elements of its existing `[3][]const u8` table passed on and indexed as bytes.

- specs/compiler/rust_slice_lowering.t27 and its seal are removed again.
- Zig (`t27c test-report`): 18 of 18, 12 new runtime asserts, 0 vacuous. t27b: 18 passed. gen-rust output builds with rustc; the same spec built from master's t27c gives 13 rustc errors (8 E0615, E0425, 2 E0308, E0277, one more).
- backend_behaviour.rs: the existing the_codegen_conformance_spec_compiles_and_runs_as_rust prints four more values (slice_len, array_len, name_bytes, name_first_byte computed by the generated Rust); +3/-3 lines, no new test.
- compiler_CodegenConformance.json re-saved; sync-twins writes 0 files.
