feat(raster): a window of a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF by its address as a raster layer: layer.addUrl {"bbox"} (#1204) - #1210
Closes#1204 for the desktop and the command line. Today a large GeoTIFF by its address is either drawn in place as a tile layer, which raster tools don't take, or downloaded whole, up to 512 MiB. layer.addUrl now takes a "bbox" that reads only an area of a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF, as a raster layer:
The window. The box is [west, south, east, north] in degrees, or "view". Its edges are turned into the file's coordinate system: 32 pieces each, every piece halved until it is straight in the file to within a quarter of a pixel, so a parallel bent into an arc by a conic projection isn't cut short. The bounds are then snapped outwards onto the pixels of the level read and kept within the file. A box past the file's edges is cut to the file, and a notice names the sides cut. A piece is also halved toward where the file's system stops placing points, so the window reaches the edge of a projection's domain. Edge points the coordinate system has no place for are counted in a notice, and so are bent pieces the halving limits (depth 12, 200,000 points) leave unfollowed. A longitude/latitude file stored 0° to 360° takes a box given −180° to 180° in its own range; a box across the file's seam (one that reaches both of its ends, whole-world or not, such as −10° to 10° over a file stored 0° to 358.4°) is refused, naming the seam. A box of the whole world reads the whole file. The raster stays in the file's coordinate system.
The read. Only the tiles the window crosses are read. The header comes from cog::info_blocking and the values from cog::read_values_blocking, the reader the data cubes use (stac.rs). Each band is read in turn.
Resolution. Full resolution by default. "cellSize" reads the coarsest overview whose cells are no larger; one finer than the full image's cells reads the full image, with a notice. It is in the file's units, or metres for a longitude/latitude file, with a degree taken as 111.32 km.
Limits. A window holds 64 million values at most (MAX_VALUES_READ, 256 MB), all bands together. The cell size compared is the longer side of a level's cells. A larger window is refused, and the error names the cell size that fits, for example: the window is 20780 × 30429 cells of 30.0 m, 1 band(s); a window holds 64000000 values at most: take "cellSize": 120 or more, or a smaller box. A window reads 256 bands at most, one read a band. No band is started after five minutes in all, the header's read counted (the last one started may take two minutes more), and the error names the band reached. The reader's own limits still apply: 4,096 tiles a read and a two-minute wait.
What comes with it. The no-data value, the band names and the colour table. A palette file such as MapBiomas then draws in its own colours.
Class names. They come from CLASS_<value> items in GDAL's metadata tag, as the MapBiomas mirror on Source Cooperative writes them. The layer's legend (Colormap or Unique Values) labels the classes with these names.
Saving. The window is kept in the project as a GeoTIFF, written with cogwrite, so a palette survives. It is not read again from the address. Its band names (DESCRIPTION items) and class names (CLASS_<value> items) are written to GDAL_METADATA, so a reopened project keeps them. A window cogwrite can't write (a palette with no index left for no-data) is saved as a plain GeoTIFF without its colour table. A notice says it then opens grey once the project is reopened; for a window with no colour table, the notice only names the writer's error. The project's GeoTIFF keeps the bands the writers take: colour (3 or 4), grey and alpha, or one. A window of other bands keeps its first band once reopened, and a notice gives the count left out.
Never silent (AGENTS.md). The window says what the file holds but isn't read, one notice a kind with a count:
a colour table that doesn't decode, or is too short for its pixels, or sits on a file of more than one band;
GDAL metadata that doesn't decode;
CLASS_ items whose value isn't a whole number below 65,536;
names given twice (the first is kept);
names cut to 256 characters;
names for bands the file doesn't have.
pam::Pam::lost and cog::Layout::lost carry these lines into the new Raster::lost, and add_raster says them for any raster added. A GeoTIFF opened whole says them too. Drawing in place shows such a file grey, as before.
"zoom": true frames the window, whatever the map held, as for any other address.
The address is checked before anything is read:
a box together with "as": "scan" or "whole": true, or with a dated address, is refused;
a file whose header gives no pixel size (zero or not a number) is refused;
a file stored bottom up is refused ("doesn't read yet");
a box's longitudes outside −180..180 or latitudes outside −90..90 are refused, and so is "view" when the view reaches past 180°;
the keys a window doesn't read (layer, x, y, wkt, crs, delimiter, paperSpace, stream, start, end, unit, interval, dates) are refused, not dropped, and so is cellSize without a box;
a box outside the file or its coordinate system is refused.
Changes
rustgis-data, raster/cog.rs: Layout gains palette and described, read from the full image's IFD.
palette is the ColorMap of a grey image. Palette images reach the decoder as grey, and their tiles are still drawn grey. The table is kept apart from color, so drawing in place doesn't change.
described is what GDAL_METADATA (tag 42112) says, through pam::parse_gdal_metadata.
Missing bytes. A tag whose bytes aren't read yet asks for them, like any other tag (Parse::Need). One that doesn't decode is left out.
Test file.Example gains classes: a palette image with two named classes.
rustgis-data, raster/pam.rs: parse_gdal_metadata reads dataset items named CLASS_<value> as band 1's class names. These are items with no sample and no role. A value is a whole number below 65,536, given in digits only (CLASS_+5 is counted as left out), and its first name wins. gdal_metadata writes them back with the band descriptions, in plain ASCII (other characters as XML references). What a document leaves out or cuts is counted in Pam::lost. That covers a band's scale and offset items, which aren't applied (the values stay as stored; a scale of 1 and an offset of 0 aren't counted), CLASS_ items given for a band or a role, and other band items (units, a band's own keys, a DESCRIPTION item with no role="description"; STATISTICS_* aren't counted, as they are worked out again from the values). A document that doesn't read as XML, is too large, or isn't <GDALMetadata> names nothing and says why (Pam::losing). The sidecar reader, parse, now counts what it leaves out too: names cut to 256 characters, class names past the first 65,536, band records for no band from 1 to 65,536, a band's records after its first (the first is kept), a band's <Scale>, <Offset> (not applied, as for the tag) and <UnitType>, a band's other <MDI> metadata items, of any domain (STATISTICS_* aren't counted, as for the tag), a band's <ColorTable> with entries (only the file's own colour table is drawn), and a <NoDataValue> that isn't a number. Raster::apply_pam takes where the document came from, so a sidecar's losses are said as "its .aux.xml sidecar" and the tag's as "its GDAL metadata". A sidecar that is there but doesn't read (can't be looked at, over 16 MiB, not UTF-8 text, not XML, not <PAMDataset>) names nothing and says why. When x.tif.aux.xml doesn't read and x.aux.xml does, the second is read and says the first was left out. Only read checks the size: parse takes text already read.
rustgis-data, raster/cogwrite.rs and raster/geotiff.rs: the written bands' own names and the first band's class names go to GDAL_METADATA (42112). Only a raster with a named band or classes gets the tag (a band keeping its number, Band 3, has nothing to write); others are written as before.
rustgis-data, raster/pam.rs and raster/mod.rs: a sidecar's no-data value applies only from records of bands the raster has (Pam::nodata_within); one for another band is said as left out; bands that give different values give none, and say so.
rustgis-engine, Export Raster: says which written bands' class names the GeoTIFF doesn't keep (it writes the first band's as CLASS_ items).
rustgis-data, raster/geotiff.rs: a palette GeoTIFF read whole whose colour table doesn't decode, is too short for its pixels, or is missing, is drawn grey and says so (Raster::lost), as a window does; before, it turned grey without a word.
rustgis-engine, Export Raster: says how many of the raster's bands it writes when it leaves some out.
rustgis-engine, cmd/layer.rs: the "bbox" and "cellSize" parameters of layer.addUrl, in add_cog_window and window_box. The result gains "window": {"columns", "rows", "level", "cellSize"}, and a notice says which level was read and its cell size.
docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: the window read, with its limits.
Choices in this PR
Desktop and command line only. In the web app, "bbox" is refused with a message that says so, and the file is still drawn in place without it. The browser can't wait for the tiles inside a command. That needs the front end's download path (fix(plugins): a plugin's layer.addUrl downloads off the frame on the desktop #1170), which reads the tiles off the frame and runs the command again, so it is left for a second PR. A plugin's command run by the app (which leaves downloads to the app, off the frame) is refused too, with a message: the window would wait on the frame. Taking "bbox" through the app's off-frame queue is a follow-up: [Feature]: Read a COG window (layer.addUrl {"bbox"}) off the frame in the app, and from plugins #1330. An address that names another kind of file (.geojson, .fgb) is refused with "bbox" before any fetch; one with no extension, or "cog": true, is read.
A blocking read, as the cubes' header read. The command waits where it runs for the header and then for the tiles, up to two minutes for each (each band); no band is started after five minutes from the header's read, so about seven at most. cube.* over a STAC search reads its first header the same way (stac.rs). No dialog of the desktop app sends "bbox", so the frame isn't held from there. Run from the command palette, the assistant or a script, it holds that caller for the read: 9 to 12 s in the tests below. Reading off the frame is the same work as the web path (fix(plugins): a plugin's layer.addUrl downloads off the frame on the desktop #1170), so it goes with part 2.
The overview is never read unasked. Without cellSize, the window takes no overview's values (the header's read still takes up to 16 tiles of the coarsest overview for the drawing's stretch, as for any GeoTIFF drawn in place; an 8-bit colour file skips it, and so does one whose level has more than 16 tiles, drawn with its type's full range). A window too large for the full image is refused, and the error names the overview that fits. MODE and nearest overviews (the Brazil Data Cube's pick one pixel per cell) are not silently passed off as the data.
A level by "no larger than", not "nearest".cellSize is the coarsest the caller accepts, so 90 on Copernicus GLO-30 takes the 61.8 m overview, not the 123 m one. cube.* picks the nearest level by ratio. A window is a single read, and finer than asked is safer there than coarser.
The window in the file's own grid. Reprojection is raster.project's job.
The file's own tags, not a sidecar. An .aux.xml beside the address isn't fetched: no-data, names and classes come from the file's tags. A no-data value set only in a sidecar (as gdal_edit may write it) doesn't apply. The user guide says so. Fetching <url>.aux.xml would add a request, a 404 for most files, to every window, so it is left out.
Values as 32-bit floats, rounded ones counted. A window's values are held as f32, as every raster is. cog::decode_tile_counted marks the samples f32 doesn't hold exactly (32- and 64-bit whole numbers and 64-bit floats, by fix(data): say when raster values are rounded to 32-bit floats #1286's rule, no-data not counted), the tile cache keeps the marks with the values, and read_values_counted_blocking counts those in the window, so the window says "N values were rounded as the file was read" as a file read whole does. A COG drawn in place isn't counted. Values past f32's range (a Float64 beyond about 3.4e38) are left out, as no value, and said apart.
Kept in the project. The window is not re-read from the address on open. A saved project then opens offline and doesn't depend on the file staying online and unchanged.
Testing
rustgis-data:
reads_class_names_from_gdal_metadata: CLASS_ items, along with band descriptions, a repeated value, items that aren't whole numbers or are too large, and a band's own item;
a_palette_and_class_names_come_with_the_layout: the example's table and classes. A plain file has neither, and its tiles are still grey.
rustgis-engine: a_cog_window_comes_in_as_a_raster, from a local server that answers byte ranges:
a window at full resolution, with the values, transform and size checked;
only the window's tile, the header and the coarsest overview are fetched: 192 KB of the 1.4 MB file;
cellSize takes the right overview;
a box over the file's edge is cut to the file and says which sides; boxes within it say nothing of the kind;
"bbox": "view" reads the view's extent; a view larger than the file reads it whole, cut on all four sides; a view past 180° is refused;
refused: a box off the file, wrong boxes (a longitude of 500 among them), whole, and a zero cellSize;
the palette example's colour table and class names;
a window over the most values is refused, naming the overview that fits (a smaller limit under test), and comes in with that cellSize;
"zoom": true frames the window on a map that held layers: the view is centred on it, takes it in, and is less than 1° across;
a two-band window reads both bands, with no colour table; a two-band file with a colour table comes in without it, and says so;
the windows reopen from the saved project, palette and class names included.
rustgis-data: band_and_class_names_written_are_read_back and what_gdal_metadata_leaves_out_is_said (pam.rs, escaping, accents, a clean document saying nothing, one that isn't XML or isn't GDAL's saying so, a scale and offset said and identity ones not, a band's CLASS_ item said); class_names_are_written_back (geotiff.rs, through both writers, band name included); the layout test's lossy file (a 128-colour table, CLASS_70000).
rustgis-engine: the lossy file's window comes in grey with its notices, and the clean one with none; a window with crs and x, or dates, is refused, and so is cellSize without a box.
rustgis-data: a GeoTIFF read whole keeps its metadata's losses to be said (what_a_files_metadata_leaves_out_is_kept_to_be_said); names for a band the raster doesn't have are said; a control character in a name is written as a space.
Not covered by a test: the edge halving on a conic file (the test files are longitude/latitude, whose edges are straight). A 20°-wide box in Albers bows about 40 m (CodeRabbit's figure), which the halving brings under a quarter pixel in a few steps. Three notices have no test either, since the test examples can't make the files that reach them: the plain-GeoTIFF fallback when cogwrite refuses (a palette whose 256 indexes are all used, with cells that have no value: the examples' palette has no no-data), points of the box with no place in a projected file's system, and edges left unfollowed at the halving's limit (both need a projected example; the examples are longitude/latitude).
Against the real files, with rustgis-cli built from this branch:
MapBiomas 2024 over Teresina (Source Cooperative mirror, 154,470 × 146,483 pixels, palette, 38 classes): a 1,382 × 2,973 window at 30 m in 9 s. Over the 1,380 × 2,972 pixels gdal_translate -projwin gives for the same box, the values are 100 % identical (same origin). The saved project is 870 KB.
MapBiomas over the whole of Piauí: refused, with cellSize 120 named. With "cellSize": 250, overview 3 (240 m), 2,598 × 3,805, came in 12 s.
Copernicus GLO-30 (Copernicus_DSM_COG_10_S06_00_W043_00_DEM.tif): a 1,341 × 2,114 window at full resolution. "cellSize": 90 took overview 1 (61.8 m), 671 × 1,057.
cargo xtask ci on Windows with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en (cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, layers), on main at 6692b1b7: all passing (2,994 tests); again after each round of review fixes (2,999 tests after rounds 9 and 10). The wasm32 build isn't checked locally (no C compiler for zstd-sys there); the web path is a refusal behind cfg(target_arch = "wasm32").
Load selected areas from cloud-optimised GeoTIFFs on desktop and command-line builds, with optional overview selection by cell size and zoom-to-layer.
Retain supported no-data values, palettes, band names, and class metadata when reading or saving rasters. Window data is saved in projects; some multi-band windows may reopen with only the first band.
Improvements
Receive notices about missing or unreadable raster information, precision loss, and exports that omit bands or class names. Mosaic operations also report differing band or class names.
Window reads enforce size, band, tile, and time limits. The web app does not support window reads, and window loading does not apply metadata available only in sidecar files.
Documentation
Added guidance on raster window options, limits, and supported formats.
… a raster layer (opengeos#1204)
layer.addUrl takes "bbox" ([west, south, east, north] in degrees, or "view"): on the
desktop and the command line, only the tiles of a COG that the box crosses are read,
with the reader the data cubes use, into a raster layer in the file's coordinate system.
"cellSize" picks the coarsest overview whose cells are no larger; without it a window
over 64 million values is refused, naming the cell size that fits. The file's no-data,
colour table and band and class names come with it (CLASS_<value> items in
GDAL_METADATA, as the MapBiomas mirror writes them). The window is kept in the project
as a GeoTIFF. In the web app "bbox" is refused for now.

layer.addUrl can read a bounded area of a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF as a raster on desktop and CLI. The change adds palette and GDAL metadata handling, loss reporting, metadata serialization, and rounded-sample counting. Window reads support overview selection and limits; wasm rejects requests with bbox.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Read metadata and track raster losses crates/data/src/raster/cog.rs, crates/data/src/raster/pam.rs, crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs, crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs
COG, GeoTIFF, and PAM readers handle palettes and GDAL metadata. They record metadata and palette information that could not be decoded or applied. Raster state applies in-range no-data values when they agree and carries loss messages.
Read bounded COG windows from URLs crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md
layer.addUrl accepts bbox and cellSize for COG window reads on desktop and CLI. It validates and transforms bounds, selects a resolution, reads the window, and adds it as a raster. Tests and documentation describe limits and supported behavior. The wasm implementation rejects bbox requests.
Track samples rounded during COG reads crates/data/src/raster/cog.rs, crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs, crates/tiles/src/cog.rs
COG tile decoding records samples rounded during conversion to f32. The counted blocking reader returns values and counts of rounded and overflowing samples.
GeoTIFF and COG writers serialize available band descriptions and class names for written bands. Raster addition, mosaics, project reopening, and in-place COG drawing report recorded losses. Export reports omitted bands and class names.
opengeos/RustGIS#1330: The COG window path remains blocking and refuses app-queued plugin requests; this issue concerns running those paths off the frame.
opengeos/RustGIS#1144: The change adds another layer.addUrl download path and refuses bbox in app-queued plugin commands, so the reported blocking behavior remains relevant.
opengeos/RustGIS#1331: This change reports losses for synchronous COG window reads; browser header and background loading cases remain outside this behavior.
Possibly related PRs
opengeos/RustGIS#1339: Both changes cover palette detection and incomplete-palette reporting in COG readers.
opengeos/RustGIS#890: Both changes handle GDAL metadata tag 42112 and its parsing and application.
opengeos/RustGIS#1286: Both changes add rounded-sample counting and writer band-selection behavior.

Explanation
Direct issue [#1204] requires layer.addUrl support for a bounded COG window, including the proposed web-app download path. The PR implements the desktop and command-line path, including bounded reads, cellSize, value limits, no-data, band/class metadata, and GeoTIFF persistence. The web path remains refused on wasm and is explicitly deferred to follow-up work. The issue also requires unchanged behavior without bbox; the PR changes shared raster metadata and sidecar handling for non-window reads.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes behavior outside bounded COG windows. Raster::apply_pam changes sidecar no-data application and adds loss reporting for ordinary raster reads. read_path can read ASCII grids and GeoTIFFs a second time. raster_mosaic and project reset now report losses and mosaics compare and retain metadata names. These paths also run without bbox, while [#1204] states that behavior without bbox should remain unchanged.

"zoom": true is ignored for a bbox window, so on a non-empty project the view does not move to the new raster. Inline on layer.rs:2986. Confidence: medium-high.
Unchecked u64 multiply on header-derived window sizes (layer.rs:2927). Hostile dimensions and band counts can overflow, panicking in debug and wrapping in release. The reader already uses saturating_mul for the same count. Inline with a suggestion. Confidence: low-medium.
Security
None found. The URL is user-supplied, as in the existing COG path. Window size is capped, and bbox parsing is bounded and finite-checked.
Performance
A maximal window keeps the 256 MB of f32 values in the Raster, plus the encoded file bytes in the layer. Retained memory may therefore be about twice the documented cap. Confidence: low-medium, not verified against RasterLayer::from_bytes.
Quality
The two-minute wait in the docs (data-formats.md:130) applies to each band's read, not the whole window. A multi-band window can wait longer. Inline with a suggestion. Confidence: high on mechanics, low severity.
parse_gdal_metadata says class names are for single-band files, but the code attaches them to band 1 whatever the band count (pam.rs:145). Nit. Confidence: high.
The cogwrite → geotiff::write fallback (layer.rs:2977) silently discards the COG writer's error. Nit. Confidence: medium.
The tag closure in cog.rs:357 returns Need whenever any bytes are missing, not just the tag's own. This causes at most an extra fetch and converges. Nit. Confidence: low.
Tests (tests.rs:22015): the 64-million-value refusal, multi-band windows, and zoom are not covered. Inline. Confidence: medium.

Checked: the struct-literal call sites of Layout and Example, the reader and writer APIs, the view-extent units, the add_raster return shape, and the tile-cache behaviour for the per-band loop. The per-band loop does not re-download chunky tiles, so I dropped that concern.

Skip the overview stretch read on the window path.
add_cog_window calls cog::info_blocking. That call also reads up to 16 tiles of the coarsest overview at least 256 pixels wide, whatever the bbox. For files that are not 8-bit RGB, the first window per file pays this unneeded transfer. The window path reads only header and tile-index data, so it could avoid this read.

Consider an operation-wide deadline for multi-band windows.
Each band read has its own documented 120-second timeout, so a synchronous multi-band window can wait for multiple intervals. The inspected documentation does not establish a 120-second operation-wide limit. Treat a shared deadline as an optional reliability improvement, not a required correction.

…ize of both sides (opengeos#1204)
- `"zoom": true` frames the window whatever the map held, as for any other address.
- The class names of the written band go to GDAL_METADATA (42112) as CLASS_<value> items, in
cogwrite and geotiff::write, so a reopened window keeps its legend's labels.
- A level's cell size is the longer side of its cells; the window's value count saturates.
- Docs: the two-minute wait is for each band; what each limit's refusal suggests.
- Tests: the value limit's refusal and hint (a smaller limit under test), zoom on a map with
layers, a two-band window, class names after a reopen, and the metadata writer.

Review round 1 is in a2285f0. All eight inline threads are answered and resolved.
One point from the CodeRabbit summary is left as it is: the overview stretch read when the header is fetched (layer.rs:2889). cog::info_blocking reads the shared header cache that drawing in place and the data cubes (stac.rs) use too. The stretch is read once per file, at most 16 tiles of the coarsest overview, and the next tile layer of that file reuses it. Leaving it out for windows only would need a second header state in that cache, which is more than this PR should change.
cogwrite errors are swallowed by .or_else(|_| geotiff::write(…)), so a window can be saved by a different encoder with no notice. Medium confidence (~55%). Inline at layer.rs:2978.
A zero or NaN pixel size passes the north-up check and gives a misleading window error or a whole-file read. Medium-low (~40%). Inline at layer.rs:2891.
Longitudes in bbox are not range-checked; only latitudes are. Medium (~60%). Inline at layer.rs:3024.
Security
No issues found in the diff. Input is bounded: the XML parser has a node limit, the value count is capped before allocation, the tile count is capped, and the wasm path refuses. The URL scheme check in add_url runs before the new branch.
Performance
Each band is read in a separate read_values_blocking call. For interleaved files, every call refetches and probably redecodes the same tiles, and waits up to 2 minutes per band. Medium (~50%). Inline at layer.rs:2956.
The window's values, the Raster copy and the encoded GeoTIFF bytes can all be held at once, so peak memory is about twice the 256 MB the limit names. Medium-low (~45%). Not posted inline.
Blocking reads run inside Session::run. If the assistant, palette or plugins call layer.addUrl with bbox on the UI thread, the frame freezes. Low (~35%), to confirm. Inline at layer.rs:2880.
Quality
Never silent (AGENTS.md): class names are cut to 256 characters and dropped when out of range, duplicated or non-numeric, with no notice. The palette and described tags are also dropped silently. High (~85%) for the class-name case, medium-high (~75%) for the palette. Inline at pam.rs:186 and cog.rs:363.
The test suite checks lossy cases but has no notice tests, which AGENTS.md asks for ("test both ways").
add_cog_window is about 110 lines and mixes box arithmetic with I/O. Splitting out the pure box-to-pixel part would make it testable.
Minor nits: direct indexing into layout.levels[*i] (around layer.rs:2943) where AGENTS.md asks for get(). The crs, x, y, wkt, delimiter and stream parameters are silently ignored with bbox, which may need a notice.
AGENTS.md
Crash rules are followed: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and no unsafe.
Wasm is handled with a cfg stub.
The regression and round-trip tests are good. The missing piece is the notice tests noted above.
The PR description says class names "don't survive" a reopen because cogwrite writes no GDAL_METADATA. The diff now writes them (cogwrite.rs:417–420), and the test asserts they reopen. The description is out of date and should be corrected before merge.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 6692b1b to PR head a2285f0).
The zoom test checks zoomed and the camera centre at lines 22075-22077. No later assertion in the test reads the zoomed camera's resolution. A zoom that is too close still centres the window and passes this test.
zoom_to_added passes the window extent to s.zoom_to (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3112). Camera::fit_extent then sets self.res from the extent and the view size (crates/map/src/camera.rs:429). Add an assertion on s.map().camera.res, which is a public field (crates/map/src/camera.rs:38). Check that the resolution is no finer than fit_extent gives for the window's extent and the view size.

Update the zoom test’s assertions near the camera-centre check to verify
s.map().camera.res is no finer than the resolution produced by fitting the
window extent to the view size. Keep the existing zoomed-state and centre
assertions.
Add a full-image two-band case to test the aggregate value limit.
Add a full-image two-band case to test the aggregate value limit.
The new two-band request reads a 256 × 256 window. That window holds 131,072 values in total, well under the 300,000-value test limit, so it never reaches the limit. A full-image two-band window holds 524,288 values and is refused. A per-band count would give 262,144 and accept it. Without a request that exceeds the limit with two bands, a regression that counted values per band would not fail any assertion.
🧪 Suggested test addition

…, fallback notice (opengeos#1204)
- A header with a zero or non-finite pixel size is refused before the window is placed.
- The box's longitudes are checked (−180..180), as its latitudes are.
- A window cogwrite can't write is kept as a plain GeoTIFF with a notice that its colour table
isn't kept, instead of silently.
- geotiff::write takes a colour file's class names from its first band, the one read back as band 1.
- The zoom test checks the view frames the window, not only that it is centred.

Five inline comments are posted. Four are "Never silent" violations under AGENTS.md; the fifth is a possible band-name loss on save. The rest of the change looks sound (see the last section).
Bugs
Band names lost on save/reopen, medium confidence. cogwrite writes CLASS_<value> items but never writes band DESCRIPTION items, so a reopened window loses names like mapbiomas_class. The PR text claims band names are kept. (cogwrite.rs:418)
Security
None found. Window bounds, tile counts and value counts are checked before allocation. Class-name XML is escaped on write.
Performance
Blocking reads, low confidence. info_blocking and read_values_blocking wait up to two minutes per band (layer.rs:2889). If the desktop UI runs this on the frame thread, the window can freeze for that long. I could not confirm from the staged files whether the ui.addUrl path routes bbox through the frame thread.
Memory, low confidence. A 64M-value window can hold f32 band buffers (up to 256 MB), the raster, and the encoded GeoTIFF at once, roughly doubling peak memory. Worth a note in the docs or a lower limit.
Quality
class_metadata uses format! inside a loop where write! to the String would be idiomatic (pam.rs:211). Nit.
add_cog_window is about 130 lines. Splitting out the window-placement and palette steps would help readability. Nit.
AGENTS.md
Silent drops, high confidence, four places:
A ColorMap or GDAL_METADATA tag that fails to decode is left out with no notice (cog.rs:360).
A palette whose ColorMap is too short is discarded with no notice (cog.rs:430).
Class items at or above MAX_CATEGORIES are skipped, and names over 256 characters are cut, with no notice (pam.rs:186).
class_metadata truncates names and drops classes past MAX_CATEGORIES without reporting (pam.rs:211).
Ignored parameters, medium confidence: once bbox is set, crs, wkt, x/y, delimiter, layer and others are ignored silently (layer.rs:2698).
Test coverage: the lossy-input tests assert the value (None, the class names) but not the notice. AGENTS.md requires both directions.
What I checked and found sound
The Need path: read_layout's tag closure returns Err only when seen.missing() is set, which layout() turns into Parse::Need. This matches the existing pattern.
Sparse is Arc-backed, so the seen clone is cheap.
No duplicate tag 42112: cogwrite and geotiff::write each write it once, and no other path does.
Window snapping: c0 ≤ c1 holds because clamping is monotone, so the c1 - c0 subtraction cannot underflow.
Overview selection: the coarsest level no larger than cellSize is chosen, and the over-limit message suggests a correct cellSize.
The wasm32 stub compiles without the native-only constants.

Follow-up Comments
Keep the colour table when a window falls back to a plain GeoTIFF.
2983-2988: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Keep the colour table when a window falls back to a plain GeoTIFF.
When cogwrite::write rejects a palette window, the fallback saves the window with geotiff::write. That writer does not store the colour table. The layer keeps its palette in memory, but the saved file does not. After the project reopens, the layer is read back as grey, so its categorical colours are lost.
The notice at crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:2988 appears when the window is added. It does not state that the loss persists after the project is reopened.
Choose one of two fixes. Either write the colour table into the saved file, or refuse a window that cannot keep its colour table. The inspected code does not establish which option the project should use, so this comment does not propose a code change.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs around lines 2983 - 2988:
Update the fallback from rustgis_data::raster::cogwrite::write to
rustgis_data::raster::geotiff::write so a window cannot silently lose its colour
table: either persist the table in the saved GeoTIFF or refuse the window when
the table cannot be preserved. Ensure reopening the project retains the
categorical colours.
The new no pixel size branch in add_cog_window has no test. The window tests use valid north-up fixtures and the malformed-input cases cover only bbox, whole and cellSize. Removing the new guard would leave the window tests passing. Add a case that serves a file with zero or non-finite pixel_width or pixel_height, then assert the no pixel size error.

Add a test for the no-pixel-size guard in add_cog_window using a fixture with
zero or non-finite pixel_width or pixel_height, and assert that it returns the
“no pixel size” error. Keep the existing valid north-up fixtures and
malformed-input tests unchanged.
Add a test for the plain GeoTIFF fallback in layer.addUrl.
Add a test for the plain GeoTIFF fallback in layer.addUrl.
The fallback at crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:2983-2990 runs when cogwrite::write returns an error. It writes the window with geotiff::write and sends a notice. No test in crates/engine/src/tests.rs triggers that error or checks the notice. A regression in the fallback's cell values or notice would pass the suite.
Add a layer.addUrl test with a palette window that makes cogwrite::write fail. The plan function in crates/data/src/raster/cogwrite.rs (line 102) rejects a palette whose indexes are not whole numbers from 0 to 255. The test should assert that the window layer keeps its cell values and that the fallback notice is sent. It should not assert that the colour table is dropped, because the PR does not establish that as a contract.

non-integer or out-of-range indexes so cogwrite::write fails in plan and the

Add a west-longitude rejection case to the `layer.addUrl` rejection test:
include a bounding box whose west longitude is below −180° and expect the
existing “bbox is” rejection. Keep the current east-bound case and test
structure unchanged.
Add a zoom case that checks the view width against a second window size.
Add a zoom case that checks the view width against a second window size.
The zoom check covers one window, the 0.25-degree box [10.25, 45.5, 10.5, 45.75]. Its width bound only requires the view to be under 1.0 degree. A view kept at a fixed scale and centred on that window passes every zoom assertion, so a zoom that ignores the window size would not fail this test.
Zoom a second window of a different size, such as [10.0, 45.0, 10.5, 45.5], and assert that its view is clearly wider than the first. A threshold of 1.5 times the first view's width leaves margin for projection effects. Zoom each window in its own call. The zoom path fits the combined extent of layers added together, so a shared zoom would blend the two windows.
Do not rely on the centre check to separate the two cases. A fixed-scale view also centres on each window.

…ack (opengeos#1204)
Never silent (AGENTS.md), for the window path:
- cog::Layout::lost: a colour table or GDAL metadata that doesn't decode, a colour table too
short for its pixels. pam::Pam::lost: CLASS_ items with no usable value, band descriptions
for no band, names given twice, names cut to 256 characters. add_cog_window notifies each.
- A "view" box past 180° is refused instead of cut; the layer.addUrl keys a window doesn't read
(crs, x, y, wkt, layer, delimiter, …) are refused instead of dropped.
- The fallback notice says the plain GeoTIFF opens grey once the project is reopened.
pam::gdal_metadata (was class_metadata) also writes the bands' own names as DESCRIPTION items,
from cogwrite and geotiff::write, so a reopened window keeps them; names are written whole.
Tests: a lossy example (128-colour table, CLASS_70000) gives the notices and a clean one none;
band and class names through both writers; the parser's counts.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
I read the whole diff, the staged metadata, the open and resolved review threads, and the code the changed paths call into. I could not run the tests, clippy or the wasm build here, so these findings come from reading the code. I posted no inline comments because I found no new issue that clears the bar.
Bugs
None new above the bar. Low confidence (~25%): in read_layout (crates/data/src/raster/cog.rs), the tag closure treats Err(_) if seen.missing().is_some() as "header not read yet". That record is shared with the palette_patches walk, whose errors are swallowed (let _ = walk()). A broken colour map or metadata tag could then cost one extra Need round before it is reported as lost. I could not get wrong output from it.
Security
None found. Address and box checks refuse before any fetch. Header reads are capped (header_read, ifd_value_size). Window values are capped at 64M. Longitudes and latitudes are range-checked. Non-finite projected points are dropped by from_lonlat.
Performance
None new. The cost of rounded_bits on every decoded tile, and the per-band re-decode of interleaved tiles, were raised and answered (the tile cache keeps all bands of a tile).
Quality
Nothing new worth an inline comment. The open quality points (parse always returning Some, the length of add_cog_window) are for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Checked and clean:
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. Every use is inside a test module.
The Instant use is in the native-only add_cog_window. read_values_blocking is gated, and the web stub exists.
GDAL_METADATA (42112) is written before 42113, so IFD tags stay in ascending order.
The docs match the code on the limits, the five-minute wait and the refusal messages.
Already raised, not re-raised: "test both ways" is not met for the cogwrite fallback notice, the unplaced and unfollowed edge-point notices, and the Float64 overflow notice. The author's reason is that cog::Example cannot make those files. Maintainers should decide whether to accept that.
Earlier threads
114 on this PR: 8 open, 106 resolved. I left all of them alone.
The open ones are answered or deferred:
the parse Option nit, for the release quality pass;
the UI-frame hold for a window run from the palette. The author accepted it, and it can hold the desktop frame for up to about seven minutes. That is a stability call for maintainers.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 8ebc4ce to PR head ed4639a).
No confirmed bugs, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations in the changed code. Only low-stakes notes remain, so I posted no inline comments.
Bugs
None confirmed. I traced the window geometry (edge halving, seam handling, 0°–360° shift, view clamping), the value cap and band timing, the no-data and rounding re-read in read_path, palette detection and the tag-past-EOF path in the tiles reader, sidecar parsing and its limits, the CLASS_ and GDAL_METADATA writers, the project-open notices in reset, and the wasm stubs and cfg gates. (Confidence: high.)
Security
None found. Sidecars are size-capped before reading, XML parsing disables DTDs and sets node limits, and writer output is escaped. URLs echoed in errors go through notify, which redacts. (Confidence: high.)
Performance
Low: decode_tile now calls rounded_bits and builds per-band bitmaps for every tile, including the drawing path (get_tile uses decode_tile_counted), which never reads them. Only Int32, UInt32, Int64, UInt64 and Float64 chunks pay for it, and the cost is small next to decompression. A flag or lazy count would remove it. (Confidence: about 60%; impact low.)
Quality (nits, not blocking)
crates/data/src/raster/pam.rs: parse_gdal_metadata walks the root's children about five times to make its counts. One pass would read more clearly. (Confidence: high; low impact.)
crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs: the notice "class names other than X's, which the mosaic keeps" is ambiguous. Saying the other rasters' class names are dropped would be clearer. (Confidence: medium.)
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs: the edge-halving loop calls place again on both ends of each piece, two extra transforms per piece. Carrying the ends with the piece avoids them. Negligible at current limits. (Confidence: high.)
AGENTS.md
No violations found in the changed lines. Checked: no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code; notices go through notify; the web stub exists for add_cog_window and the native-only paths are cfg-gated; no new dependencies; the docs cover the new parameter.
Earlier concerns
pr-context/prior-reviews.json has 114 threads: 113 resolved, 1 open (pam.rs:140, the parse return type, which is already left for the quality pass). I raised none of them again. I read the first two-thirds of the thread text in full and searched the rest by keyword.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base c32a153 to PR head 45b4929).
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The mosaic keeps the first input's band names, as it keeps its class names; an
input whose band names differ is now said with the class-name case.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
I checked the full diff against the 12 changed files, the AGENTS.md rules and the prior review threads. Most concerns raised on the earlier threads are already fixed or explicitly deferred to #1331, so I found only two new issues, both low severity.
Bugs: none found.
Security: none found. Input is bounded: the sidecar is capped at 16 MiB, XML node counts are limited, the window is capped at 64M values and 256 bands, and the wait is limited. The address checks run before any fetch.
Performance
crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs:775: the second read in read_path has no check that anything was rounded, so a GeoTIFF whose sidecar no-data differs between "all records" and "bands the raster has" is decoded twice, up to the whole-file cap. The reply on that earlier thread says the guard exists, which the code does not do. Confidence about 60%, low severity. A plain rounded.is_empty() guard would be wrong, because the decoder can exclude a value without leaving any rounded count.
Quality: none raised in this review. The prior threads already cover the quality points, and the release quality pass handles those.
AGENTS.md
crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs:536: when the file has its own no-data value, an in-range sidecar value that differs is dropped without a notice. This breaks the "Never silent" rule. Confidence about 40%, because I have not confirmed GDAL's precedence rule.
Both inline comments are posted.
Left alone as already raised: 52 earlier concerns, covering the ui.addUrl UI-thread path, the browser header notices (#1331), the background S3 reads, the parse signature, and the add_cog_window split.
Not raised: window overviews chosen with cellSize are not checked for their resampling method. The PR text limits the "not passed off as data" claim to the default read, which is accurate, so this is a scope note rather than a defect.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base c32a153 to PR head dffb7db).
A file with its own no-data value keeps it, as GDAL does; a sidecar giving
another for its bands is now said rather than dropped without a word.

I read the full diff against the earlier review threads (about 115 on this PR, most resolved or answered). Most of the new code checks out: the window path, the sidecar reader, the header and tile changes, and the new tests. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unchecked indexing. I left the earlier concerns alone, including the open ones on parse's return type, the re-read decision in read_path, and the browser header-notice gap (#1331).
Bugs
None new at medium or higher confidence.
Security
None found. Window addresses are checked before any fetch, and the values are bounded by MAX_WINDOW_VALUES, MAX_WINDOW_BANDS and the five-minute wait.
Performance
read_layout clones the whole header Sparse (let seen = r.clone()) on every header-read round. The cost is a copy of the fetched header bytes per round. Low severity, about 40% confidence.
Quality
Misleading export hint for colour rasters (low, about 80%). Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/raster.rs:926. For an RGB raster, written_bands ignores band, so "give band for another" points at a parameter that changes nothing.
The say_losses range wording can merge lists of values into misleading ranges. For example, no-data (0, 255) against (0, 1) becomes (0, 1–255) when four or more rasters are grouped. Low severity, about 35% confidence.
AGENTS.md
No new violations found in the changed non-test code. Every new loss is either notified through Session::notify or ToolResult, or said by add_raster, reset or say_losses.
I left 1 inline comment. I did not run the test suite; this review is by reading.
Change size
Compared with base: the whole PR against main (merge base c32a153 to PR head 45f537b).
A colour raster writes its colour bands whatever "band" is, so its export
note now says so rather than sending the user to a parameter that changes
nothing.

Window read blocks the UI frame from Command Search and buttons (re-raised, ~75%). Interface commands run session.run on the app thread (lib.rs:1732-1770). The plugin path is refused for that reason, but the same freeze is open from the palette. The worst case is about 7 minutes, not the 9–12 s in the tests. Posted inline at layer.rs:2850.
No other bugs found. I traced these and they hold:
box_in_file_longitudes seam handling, including 0–360 and 720°-offset files.
Window cell and limit arithmetic. c1 ≥ c0 and r1 ≥ r0 hold for both pixel-size signs.
read_path sidecar no-data reread. The decoder only uses the sidecar no-data for the rounded count, so the reread condition is consistent.
tiles/cog.rs empty-read retry, bounded by MAX_ROUNDS.
Tile::rounded_at bit precedence and the rounded index alignment with the value layout.
add_layer_text notifies losses once. It doesn't go through add_raster, so there's no duplicate.
Blocking COG functions are cfg-gated, so the wasm build should not break here.
Security
None found. XML parsing disables DTDs and caps nodes. Class names are escaped on write, and the CLASS_ index is a number.
Performance
decode_tile_counted now computes rounded_bits for every tile on the drawing path. The cost is small and I did not measure it. Low confidence, not posted.
Quality (grouped, for the release quality pass)
The "bbox" entry in the layer.addUrl params string has inner "view" quotes that break the quoting convention of the other entries.
The apply_pam doc comment in raster/mod.rs (about lines 880–882) runs very long and reads awkwardly.
parse and parse_gdal_metadata still return Option in ways a reader must track. Already raised in an earlier thread and left for the quality pass, so not repeated.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe added to non-test code. New indexing uses get().
Every new refusal and loss path has a test. Lossy input gives the notice, clean input gives none.
wasm: the web add_cog_window is a refusal stub. The PR says the wasm build wasn't checked locally, so CI should confirm it.
Prior review threads
I left 36 earlier concerns alone because they were already answered and resolved, or are outdated. I re-raised one, the frame-hold thread on add_cog_window, because the author's reply doesn't cover the palette path.

Pass band in the five-band colour-raster export test.
The test comment says the colour bands are written "whatever band is", but the export call never sets band. Every assertion therefore uses the default band index. band: 5 is valid for this five-band raster and selects the NIR band. With that value, the test checks a nondefault band. If the export began to depend on band for colour rasters, the existing assertions would fail.
Production export currently ignores band for colour rasters. This is a test coverage gap, not a functional defect.

Update the five-band colour-raster export test’s share.exportRaster call to pass
band 5, preserving the existing layer, path, and notice assertions so the test
exercises a nondefault band value.
Add a two-band no-data conflict test that uses band records 1 and 2.
Add a two-band no-data conflict test that uses band records 1 and 2.
The both helper gives both records band: 1, and small() has one band. parse_sidecar keeps only the first record for each band. The conflict cases therefore use an input that a parsed sidecar cannot produce. No assertion checks a disagreement between band 1 and band 2, so a change that ignores band 2 would not fail these tests.
Add a two-band raster whose bands give different no-data values. Assert that no no-data value applies and that the conflict is reported.

Add a two-band no-data conflict case to the existing `apply_pam` tests, using
distinct `PamBand` records for bands 1 and 2 on a two-band `Raster`. Assert that
the conflicting values leave `nodata` unset and produce the expected conflict
report in `lost`.

On CodeRabbit's two test nitpicks in review 5748838963:
Pass band in the five-band colour export test. Agreed that passing band would make "whatever band is" explicit. The code path doesn't depend on it: the hint is chosen from bands == [bi], and a colour raster's written bands never equal a single index.
A two-band no-data conflict test with band records 1 and 2. Agreed, worth adding. The current test checks the same comparison with two records of band 1.
Both are test additions with no change to behaviour, so they are left for the release quality pass.

layer.rs: layer.addUrl's params keep main's "bbox" and "cellSize" (opengeos#1210)
and this branch's internal "request".
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Brings in main's 32 commits. Three blocks, each combined:
- tiles cog.rs: main's bounded `decode_tile_counted` (opengeos#1370), then this
branch's login check on the tile read.
- engine project.rs: the recorded (history/task/model) addresses are put
back first, then main's early return and project-size limit (opengeos#1364),
so a refused save never leaves the live project's bindings stripped.
- engine layer.rs: layer.addUrl lists main's `bbox`/`cellSize` (opengeos#1210)
and this branch's `connection`.

Summary
Closes #1204 for the desktop and the command line. Today a large GeoTIFF by its address is either drawn in place as a tile layer, which raster tools don't take, or downloaded whole, up to 512 MiB.
layer.addUrlnow takes a"bbox"that reads only an area of a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF, as a raster layer:{"url": "https://data.source.coop/tristangruppwri/mapbiomas/mapbiomas-brazil/mapbiomas_brazil_2024/mapbiomas_brazil_2024.tif", "bbox": [-42.971, -5.587, -42.599, -4.786], "name": "MapBiomas 2024"}The window. The box is
[west, south, east, north]in degrees, or"view". The raster stays in the file's coordinate system.The read. Only the tiles the window crosses are read. The header comes from
cog::info_blockingand the values fromcog::read_values_blocking, the reader the data cubes use (stac.rs). Each band is read in turn.Resolution. Full resolution by default.
"cellSize"reads the coarsest overview whose cells are no larger; one finer than the full image's cells reads the full image, with a notice. It is in the file's units, or metres for a longitude/latitude file, with a degree taken as 111.32 km.Limits. A window holds 64 million values at most (
MAX_VALUES_READ, 256 MB), all bands together. The cell size compared is the longer side of a level's cells. A larger window is refused, and the error names the cell size that fits, for example:the window is 20780 × 30429 cells of 30.0 m, 1 band(s); a window holds 64000000 values at most: take "cellSize": 120 or more, or a smaller box. A window reads 256 bands at most, one read a band. No band is started after five minutes in all, the header's read counted (the last one started may take two minutes more), and the error names the band reached. The reader's own limits still apply: 4,096 tiles a read and a two-minute wait.What comes with it. The no-data value, the band names and the colour table. A palette file such as MapBiomas then draws in its own colours.
Class names. They come from
CLASS_<value>items in GDAL's metadata tag, as the MapBiomas mirror on Source Cooperative writes them. The layer's legend (Colormap or Unique Values) labels the classes with these names.Saving. The window is kept in the project as a GeoTIFF, written with
cogwrite, so a palette survives. It is not read again from the address. Its band names (DESCRIPTIONitems) and class names (CLASS_<value>items) are written toGDAL_METADATA, so a reopened project keeps them. A windowcogwritecan't write (a palette with no index left for no-data) is saved as a plain GeoTIFF without its colour table. A notice says it then opens grey once the project is reopened; for a window with no colour table, the notice only names the writer's error. The project's GeoTIFF keeps the bands the writers take: colour (3 or 4), grey and alpha, or one. A window of other bands keeps its first band once reopened, and a notice gives the count left out.Never silent (AGENTS.md). The window says what the file holds but isn't read, one notice a kind with a count:
CLASS_items whose value isn't a whole number below 65,536;pam::Pam::lostandcog::Layout::lostcarry these lines into the newRaster::lost, andadd_rastersays them for any raster added. A GeoTIFF opened whole says them too. Drawing in place shows such a file grey, as before."zoom": trueframes the window, whatever the map held, as for any other address.The address is checked before anything is read:
"as": "scan"or"whole": true, or with a dated address, is refused;"view"when the view reaches past 180°;layer,x,y,wkt,crs,delimiter,paperSpace,stream,start,end,unit,interval,dates) are refused, not dropped, and so iscellSizewithout a box;Changes
rustgis-data,raster/cog.rs:Layoutgainspaletteanddescribed, read from the full image's IFD.paletteis theColorMapof a grey image. Palette images reach the decoder as grey, and their tiles are still drawn grey. The table is kept apart fromcolor, so drawing in place doesn't change.describedis whatGDAL_METADATA(tag 42112) says, throughpam::parse_gdal_metadata.Parse::Need). One that doesn't decode is left out.Examplegainsclasses: a palette image with two named classes.rustgis-data,raster/pam.rs:parse_gdal_metadatareads dataset items namedCLASS_<value>as band 1's class names. These are items with nosampleand norole. A value is a whole number below 65,536, given in digits only (CLASS_+5is counted as left out), and its first name wins.gdal_metadatawrites them back with the band descriptions, in plain ASCII (other characters as XML references). What a document leaves out or cuts is counted inPam::lost. That covers a band'sscaleandoffsetitems, which aren't applied (the values stay as stored; a scale of 1 and an offset of 0 aren't counted),CLASS_items given for a band or a role, and other band items (units, a band's own keys, aDESCRIPTIONitem with norole="description";STATISTICS_*aren't counted, as they are worked out again from the values). A document that doesn't read as XML, is too large, or isn't<GDALMetadata>names nothing and says why (Pam::losing). The sidecar reader,parse, now counts what it leaves out too: names cut to 256 characters, class names past the first 65,536, band records for no band from 1 to 65,536, a band's records after its first (the first is kept), a band's<Scale>,<Offset>(not applied, as for the tag) and<UnitType>, a band's other<MDI>metadata items, of any domain (STATISTICS_*aren't counted, as for the tag), a band's<ColorTable>with entries (only the file's own colour table is drawn), and a<NoDataValue>that isn't a number.Raster::apply_pamtakes where the document came from, so a sidecar's losses are said as "its .aux.xml sidecar" and the tag's as "its GDAL metadata". A sidecar that is there but doesn't read (can't be looked at, over 16 MiB, not UTF-8 text, not XML, not<PAMDataset>) names nothing and says why. Whenx.tif.aux.xmldoesn't read andx.aux.xmldoes, the second is read and says the first was left out. Onlyreadchecks the size:parsetakes text already read.rustgis-data,raster/cogwrite.rsandraster/geotiff.rs: the written bands' own names and the first band's class names go toGDAL_METADATA(42112). Only a raster with a named band or classes gets the tag (a band keeping its number,Band 3, has nothing to write); others are written as before.rustgis-data,raster/pam.rsandraster/mod.rs: a sidecar's no-data value applies only from records of bands the raster has (Pam::nodata_within); one for another band is said as left out; bands that give different values give none, and say so.rustgis-engine, Export Raster: says which written bands' class names the GeoTIFF doesn't keep (it writes the first band's asCLASS_items).rustgis-data,raster/geotiff.rs: a palette GeoTIFF read whole whose colour table doesn't decode, is too short for its pixels, or is missing, is drawn grey and says so (Raster::lost), as a window does; before, it turned grey without a word.rustgis-engine,add_cog: a COG drawn in place (no"bbox") whose header holds a colour table says it is drawn grey without it, and one with band or class names that it is drawn without them; a window reads them. The header's own losses are said too. On the desktop and the command line the header is read before the layer is added; in the browser it lands later and isn't said ([Feature]: Say what a layer read in the background leaves out once it lands (a COG's header in the browser, a project's remote rasters) #1331).rustgis-engine, Export Raster: says how many of the raster's bands it writes when it leaves some out.rustgis-engine,cmd/layer.rs: the"bbox"and"cellSize"parameters oflayer.addUrl, inadd_cog_windowandwindow_box. The result gains"window": {"columns", "rows", "level", "cellSize"}, and a notice says which level was read and its cell size.docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: the window read, with its limits.Choices in this PR
"bbox"is refused with a message that says so, and the file is still drawn in place without it. Taking"bbox"through the app's off-frame queue is a follow-up: [Feature]: Read a COG window (layer.addUrl {"bbox"}) off the frame in the app, and from plugins #1330. An address that names another kind of file (.geojson,.fgb) is refused with"bbox"before any fetch; one with no extension, or"cog": true, is read.cube.*over a STAC search reads its first header the same way (stac.rs). No dialog of the desktop app sends"bbox", so the frame isn't held from there. Run from the command palette, the assistant or a script, it holds that caller for the read: 9 to 12 s in the tests below. Reading off the frame is the same work as the web path (fix(plugins): a plugin's layer.addUrl downloads off the frame on the desktop #1170), so it goes with part 2.cellSize, the window takes no overview's values (the header's read still takes up to 16 tiles of the coarsest overview for the drawing's stretch, as for any GeoTIFF drawn in place; an 8-bit colour file skips it, and so does one whose level has more than 16 tiles, drawn with its type's full range). A window too large for the full image is refused, and the error names the overview that fits. MODE and nearest overviews (the Brazil Data Cube's pick one pixel per cell) are not silently passed off as the data.cellSizeis the coarsest the caller accepts, so90on Copernicus GLO-30 takes the 61.8 m overview, not the 123 m one.cube.*picks the nearest level by ratio. A window is a single read, and finer than asked is safer there than coarser.raster.project's job..aux.xmlbeside the address isn't fetched: no-data, names and classes come from the file's tags. A no-data value set only in a sidecar (asgdal_editmay write it) doesn't apply. The user guide says so. Fetching<url>.aux.xmlwould add a request, a 404 for most files, to every window, so it is left out.reset), byraster.mosaicfor a file-path input, and when a layer file is added. A raster still read in the background as the project opens (S3, a remote file) lands later, and its lines aren't said then ([Feature]: Say what a layer read in the background leaves out once it lands (a COG's header in the browser, a project's remote rasters) #1331).f32, as every raster is.cog::decode_tile_countedmarks the samplesf32doesn't hold exactly (32- and 64-bit whole numbers and 64-bit floats, by fix(data): say when raster values are rounded to 32-bit floats #1286's rule, no-data not counted), the tile cache keeps the marks with the values, andread_values_counted_blockingcounts those in the window, so the window says "N values were rounded as the file was read" as a file read whole does. A COG drawn in place isn't counted. Values pastf32's range (a Float64 beyond about 3.4e38) are left out, as no value, and said apart.Testing
