Summary

A cloud-optimised GeoTIFF carries the same information as a GeoTIFF file, so it is now a raster layer read in place instead of a tile layer: the same Symbology pane, raster commands (raster.symbology, raster.bands, raster.stretch, raster.dra, raster.mask…), legend, identify and raster tools as a file raster, with no COG-specific dialogs or menus. The map draws it at full resolution from tiles read as it draws.

How it works

  • layer.addUrl on a tiled GeoTIFF adds a RasterLayer with in_place: true, saved by its address. The layer holds an overview of every band (the finest level within about two million values, one million in the browser); statistics, histograms and tools read from it, as a file too large to hold whole already does. Without such a level the coarsest is held only when it fits half the tile cache (and 4,096 tiles); a larger image without overviews is refused with a message saying so, rather than read whole.
  • A project's (or a GeoLibre import's) in-place layers read their overviews together (map::raster::read_together), so opening one waits for the slowest read, not each in turn. An address's look (#bands=…&range=…) is applied when the pixels land, in the browser too.
  • When the view needs more detail than the overview, render::raster::draw_in_place reads a window of the level the view needs (tiles::cog::raster::window) and draws it with the layer's style and the overview's statistics, so the image looks the same at every zoom. While tiles are still arriving, the missing tiles are filled from levels already decoded (nearest first) rather than the coarse overview, so blocks don't flicker between levels; a tile's own no-data pixels stay empty. A see-through layer is blended once, overview and window together.
  • The decoded-tile cache now evicts the tile used longest ago (it evicted an arbitrary one, which could be on screen), and a view window never asks for more than half of it; a wider one reads a coarser level.
  • map can't depend on tiles, so the engine installs the overview reader as a hook (map::raster::set_in_place_reader).
  • Exports (PNG, PMTiles) wait for the window's tiles. Raster to PMTiles waits at most two minutes in all on the desktop and refuses rather than write an archive of the overview; in the browser it refuses while tiles are on their way.
  • A failed tile, the file's header or a layer's overview is asked for again after a minute, or after the server's Retry-After (429 and 503 answers, seconds or an HTTP date, kept within 1 s to 1 h), and the map draws again then: every wait asked for is kept (the earliest 1,024), not the earliest alone, and each draw asks the app again for the earliest pending, as egui's repaint request lasts one frame (cache::set_alarm; a layer's overview through Session::read_in_place_again, each frame). The wait is carried in the error's text (http status: 503 (retry after 30 s)), which cache::http_status still reads; PMTiles archives and, for a Retry-After, the plain tile cache use it too. An overview that fails again waits twice as long each time, within the hour (cache::backoff). A joint read whose tiles the fetch queue keeps dropping fails past eight drops a tile, saying so, rather than asking without end. Failing the same way again isn't said again.
  • A window and an overview ask for their tiles 256 at a time (half the fetch queue), and a tile the queue dropped is asked for again, so a view or an overview of small tiles doesn't push its own requests out. A tile a sparse file leaves out (no bytes) is empty at once, not waited for. Failed tiles are forgotten with the cache (cache::clear, cache::forget).
  • The Details pane says "Reading in place…" while a layer's overview is on its way, and shows why when it couldn't be read.

Bands, whatever the file's form (PhotometricInterpretation decides, not GDAL metadata):

  • RGB → red, green, blue (plus alpha); bands past the colour ones are read too (the TIFF decoder is told the image is grey so it hands over every sample).
  • Palette → its colour table (Colormap).
  • MinIsBlack (most remote sensing images) → the first band stretched in grey, or three bands as RGB. With more bands (an 8-band multispectral image) the user picks the combination in the Symbology pane.
  • GeoTIFF files read every band too (an RGB and near-infrared file has four bands, where the fourth was dropped) and take the same default.
  • An alpha band is scaled by its pixel type (16-bit alpha by 65535, floating point by 1), in both drawing paths.
  • A palette image without its colour table is drawn in grey and says so (a notice on adding it).
  • The stretch statistics come from a level chosen by tile budget and pixel count, which fixes images in tall strips falling back to the type's full range (shown black).

Compatibility

This touches the project format and layer.addUrl, which CONTRIBUTING lists under "coordinate first", so stating them here:

  • Project format: a raster layer gains in_place (written only when true, so other projects are unchanged). Projects that saved a plain COG as a tile layer open it as a raster layer read in place, keeping its visibility, transparency, blend, place in the drawing order and look (cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters). An older RustGIS opening a project saved by this one, tried (main's rustgis-cli at 3225fd6): it ignores in_place, shows the layer as missing (a plain web address isn't a raster path it reads; it fetches nothing), keeps the path and saves the project again without in_place. Two answers. Where this PR can close the loss, it does: a raster layer whose path is a plain http(s):// address, from no saved connection, opens as read in place when in_place is missing, since no RustGIS reads such a path any other way (a login or S3 wrapper is downloaded whole, as is a connection's address once its login is made again; a GeoTIFF downloaded whole keeps its bytes, not its address), so the round trip loses a pending look at most (a_project_an_older_rustgis_saved_again_reads_its_cog_in_place). The version is the maintainers' call, as the project format is on the coordinate-first list: docs/maintaining.md says a format's version goes up when an older reader would lose something, and that reading a new version ships a release before anything writes it, so the by-the-book path is to accept format 2 when reading in this PR and write it, for projects holding a layer read in place, from the release after; bumping FORMAT now (every project this version saves refused by an older RustGIS) is the other. Either is a small change here: say which.
  • layer.addUrl: on a tiled GeoTIFF it now adds a raster layer and returns "kind": "raster" with "inPlace": true (it returned "kind": "cog" for a tile layer). A new optional "cube": true keeps a data cube's file a tile layer (stac passes it). "whole": true still downloads the file whole.
  • Waiting for a read in place: the desktop app adds a GeoTIFF read in place at once, and its overview lands as the map draws (the Details pane says so until then; a failure is a notice, and the read is made again later; a session that doesn't draw asks again as its next command runs, waiting for it where it waits): Session::in_place_wait is false there, since its commands run on the window's own thread. The command line, Python and tests keep waiting (up to two minutes), so a command's result is complete, and an unreadable address fails the command there. Opening a project, importing a map or a layer file and binding an S3 connection read the in-place layers together, waiting only where the session does. A bind counts by what is in: connection.resolveS3 answers {id, reopened, failed, reading}, and a raster whose overview is still on its way is reading, not reopened; the desktop's chooser says how many are still being read. A failed read is paced by its wait alone: a repair of the project (a layer file added, maps imported) doesn't start it over.
  • Default look of other rasters: RasterStyle::default_with follows the same rule for every raster without colours of its own (Zarr stores, GDAL layers): four or more grey bands open as band 1 in grey, where any three or more opened as RGB of the first three. Three bands still open as RGB.
  • map.addTiles kind cog still adds a tile layer. Saved and opened again, a plain one (no dates, no data cube, not AlphaEarth) becomes a raster layer, as an older project's does. It stays a tile layer until then: a layer file added or maps imported repair the project without converting it, and a map file imported has its own plain COG tile layers opened as a project's are. A raster layer has no attribution, legend, overlay flag, zoom range or bounds of its own, so a tile layer's aren't kept: opening the project says which layers lost which, once. The connection it recorded (and its anonymity) is kept, so the project reads it through that connection.

Still tile layers: dated COG series (date placeholders), data cube files and AlphaEarth embeddings, which follow the time slider or dequantise their values.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, tests, layers): 4,318 tests pass.
  • cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web. The full wasm build wasn't linked locally (no wasm-capable clang for the Zstandard C code on this machine); CI here runs it.
  • New and updated engine tests: cloud_optimised_geotiffs_are_read_in_place (overview size, a full-resolution window export), cog_layers_are_rasters_styled_as_their_photometric_interpretation_says, cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters, cog_windows_stand_in_the_level_kept_until_their_tiles_arrive (fails without the stand-in), the unnamed-address and GeoLibre COG tests.
  • tiles::cog unit test the_tiles_used_longest_ago_make_room; data::raster::cog test every_band_whatever_the_photometric_interpretation_says.
  • From the review: the_overview_held_is_bounded, stand_ins_fill_only_the_tiles_missing, the_map_draws_again_when_a_wait_is_over, retry_after_on_429_and_503, files_have_every_band_a_cog_has, a_palette_without_its_table_says_so, an_address_look_holds_when_the_pixels_land_later; the RGBI file test now expects its fourth band, and the GeoLibre test checks the drawn opacity (layer_opacity).
  • UI smoke test a_cog_read_in_place_uses_the_raster_symbology_pane.
  • From the later review rounds: a_tile_a_sparse_file_leaves_out_is_empty_not_waited_for, a_header_refused_with_retry_after_is_read_again_when_it_says, an_in_place_layers_failed_overview_is_read_again_when_its_wait_is_over, an_overview_of_more_tiles_than_the_fetch_queue_holds_lands, a_window_of_more_tiles_than_the_fetch_queue_holds_asks_for_them_in_batches, a_dropped_tile_isnt_remembered_as_failed, failed_tiles_are_forgotten_with_their_file, a_tile_refused_with_retry_after_has_the_map_drawn_again_then, a_look_naming_bands_the_file_hasnt_is_said (a palette file too), a_palette_overview_under_a_grey_full_image_is_read_grey_as_the_full_image_is, an_in_place_layer_that_cant_be_read_says_so, cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters (the settings a raster layer hasn't), a_cog_added_without_waiting_lands_as_the_map_draws, binding_a_connection_reads_its_in_place_rasters_together (a stand-in bucket that answers only once both files are asked for), a_read_that_fails_again_waits_longer_each_time (tiles); the overview retry test now refuses twice and checks the second, longer wait. Later: a_read_the_queue_keeps_dropping_ends (tiles), a_look_applied_after_the_losses_were_said_says_its_own_alone (map), and the far-edge window test covers a level as tall as u32. Then a_connection_chosen_without_waiting_counts_its_in_place_rasters_as_reading, a_cog_tile_layer_added_this_session_stays_one_until_the_project_opens_again, a_hair_of_rotation_either_way_isnt_a_turn (render); the overview retry test adds a layer file after the first failure. Then a_later_wait_isnt_lost_behind_an_earlier_one, a_draw_before_a_wait_is_over_asks_for_it_again and cog::tests::a_header_refused_with_retry_after_has_the_map_drawn_again_then (tiles, the last reading the alarm the engine's header retry test no longer hooks: that one asserts what the server sees), a_cog_read_in_place_from_a_connection_records_it_and_follows_its_login and a_project_an_older_rustgis_saved_again_reads_its_cog_in_place (engine); the migration test adds a legend.
  • Live, with rustgis-cli run: an 8-band, 16-bit pan-sharpened WorldView strip (42,612 × 348,663 pixels, MinIsBlack) generated on request by a web API. It was added by its address as a raster layer read in place, holding a 167 × 1,362 overview. It drew in grey on band 1 by default, then in natural colour (bands 3, 4, 5) and colour infrared (8, 3, 4) through raster.bands. Exports at 1:8,000 and 1:1,000 were complete at the resolution of the view, with no gaps or coarse blocks; the five exports took 11 s in all.
  • A synthetic 4-band COG served locally for the screenshots below.

UI evidence

A synthetic 4-band, 16-bit COG (2048 × 2048, UTM 33N, 256-pixel tiles, three overviews) served locally with range requests:

  1. Added by its address: a raster layer, grey on band 1 (MinIsBlack, four bands), with the Details pane saying it is read in place and holding a 512 × 512 overview.
  2. The same layer in the file raster's Symbology pane, RGB on bands 4, 3, 2.
  3. Zoomed in 8×: drawn at full resolution from the tiles in view.

Screenshots attached below.

2-symbology-rgb-4-3-2 3-zoomed-full-resolution

The same file opened from disk as an ordinary raster draws identically.

Related issue

Related: #1204. Its problem is that a COG read in place isn't a raster, so symbology and the raster commands don't take it; that is what this changes. Tools still read the layer's overview, not a full-resolution window, so the layer.addUrl {"bbox"} read the issue asks for (and #1330) is still to do.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs can be read and displayed in place as raster layers, with resolution-aware rendering and standard raster styling.
    • RGB, grayscale, palette, and alpha-channel imagery are supported. Select multispectral bands in Symbology; overview imagery supports statistics and tools while detailed regions load.
    • Eligible GeoTIFF tile layers in saved projects are converted to raster layers; dated layers remain tile layers.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved GeoTIFF color and alpha interpretation. Images with four or more bands and no usable color interpretation open in grayscale.
    • Failed tile requests respect server retry delays and can recover on retry.
    • Raster exports report an error when in-place data is still pending or incomplete.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guides with details on in-place reading, styling, retry behavior, and Raster to PMTiles export.

A COG holds what a GeoTIFF file holds, so it is now a raster layer like one: the
same Symbology pane, raster commands, legend, identify and tools, with no
COG-only dialogs or menus. The layer keeps an overview of every band (about two
million values) for statistics and tools; zoomed in past it, the map reads the
part in view from the level the view needs as it draws, styled with the
overview's statistics so the image looks the same at every zoom.

- Every band is read whatever the PhotometricInterpretation tag says (palette,
RGB with extra bands, alpha), and that tag sets the first look: RGB in colour,
a palette as a colormap, MinIsBlack in grey on band 1 or as RGB with three
bands. GDAL metadata isn't consulted. File rasters follow the same rule.
- The stretch statistics come from a level chosen by tile budget and pixel
count, so images in tall strips no longer stretch over the type's full range.
- Decoded tiles are evicted least recently used, view windows fit the cache,
and missing tiles are filled from levels already decoded until they arrive,
so blocks no longer flicker between overview levels while zooming.
- Dated COG series, data cube files and AlphaEarth embeddings stay tile layers.
Projects that saved a plain COG as a tile layer open it as a raster layer,
keeping its visibility, transparency, blend, order and look.

Bug (confidence: high, ~80%): the address's look is dropped when the overview hasn't landed.

The look is applied only when layer.data is already Some. On the web, opening_in_place returns with data == None, so this line does nothing. When the pixels land, land() in crates/map/src/raster.rs (line 336) sees restyle == true and replaces the style with RasterStyle::default_for. So layer.addUrl with …/scene.tif#bands=5,3,2&range=10,200 loses its look in the browser. A non-strict import whose read fails also keeps the placeholder style, and the look is never reapplied.

Same root cause in cog_tiles_to_rasters (crates/engine/src/cmd/tiles.rs:550), where migrated projects lose their saved bands and range on the web.

Suggested fix: pass the look into the layer and apply it in land() after the pixels arrive, instead of applying it only when data is already set.

Fixed. The look now travels with the layer: RasterLayer::with_look(AddressLook) applies it at once when the pixels are there, else keeps it and land() applies it when they arrive (RasterStyle::for_look, moved into map). add_in_place and cog_tiles_to_rasters both use it, so the browser and migrated projects keep their bands and range. Test: an_address_look_holds_when_the_pixels_land_later.

Bug (confidence: medium, ~60%): semi-transparent layers double-blend while tiles are pending.

When w.pending is set, the overview is drawn with opacity (whole(pm)), and then the part in view is drawn over it with the same opacity. Where both cover a pixel, the layer's transparency compounds, so for a layer at 50% opacity the overlapping area shows as about 75%. The seam is visible until the tiles land.

Fix: draw the overview at full opacity into a scratch pixmap and composite it once, or draw the stand-in part only, not the overview under it.

Fixed. While tiles are pending, a see-through layer draws the overview and the window opaque into one pixmap, then blends that once at the layer's opacity; an opaque layer draws straight onto the map as before.

Performance (confidence: medium, ~55%): the window is rebuilt on every draw.

window() allocates and copies every band of the window (assemble), and stand_in scans every other level's pixels whenever tiles are missing. Neither result is kept between frames. For a large view of an 8-band image, that's up to tens of MB per draw. draw_in_place also re-runs fits(), which recomputes the chunk sets for each level, on every frame.

Consider caching the last assembled window per (file, level, cols, rows, bands) and invalidating it when its chunks change.

Not changed. The map view redraws only when its key changes (view, revision, or a tile landing), and each of those changes the window or its pixels, so a cached window would rarely be reused. The stand-in pass is now bounded by the gaps alone (assemble returns the missing tiles' rectangles), not a scan of every NaN pixel.

Performance / UX (confidence: medium, ~60%): native reads block the UI thread.

On native, reload() waits up to two minutes for each in-place overview (recv_timeout). Project open calls reload() for each raster layer in turn (crates/engine/src/project.rs:704), and opening_in_place waits the same way. A project with several slow remote COGs can freeze the UI for minutes at open, and an import of many unreachable COGs waits up to two minutes for each.

A file raster is read locally and takes little time, but these are remote reads. Consider loading in-place overviews in the background on native too, using the same landing path as the browser, or capping the total wait.

Partly fixed. A project's and a GeoLibre import's in-place layers now start their overview reads together and wait for them with one shared deadline (map::raster::read_together), so opening N slow COGs waits for the slowest, not N × 2 minutes; migrated layers are no longer read twice (cog_tiles_to_rasters adds them unread). layer.addUrl itself still waits for its overview natively, as it waits for downloads (the CLI and exports need the pixels); moving that to the background would need exports to wait for data reads too.

Behaviour change, not called out (confidence: medium, ~60%).

The default look changes for every raster, not only COGs: a grey raster with four or more bands used to get RGB from its first three bands, and now gets a grey stretch of band 1. That covers Zarr and GDAL multi-band layers, not just GeoTIFFs. The PR body and docs only mention GeoTIFFs.

Please either call this out in the PR, or limit the rule to GeoTIFF layers.

Called out now. This is the PhotometricInterpretation rule asked for: three grey bands open as RGB, more open as band 1 in grey and the user picks the combination. It applies to every raster without colours of its own, so the PR description's Compatibility section and the data-formats guide now say Zarr and GDAL layers with four or more bands change too.

AGENTS.md, never silent (confidence: medium, ~65%).

When the ColorMap is missing or short, palette_table returns None. The palette image then falls back to grey in read_layout, and nothing is reported. The same applies to the RGB fallback. Per AGENTS.md this approximation should produce a notice (what, how much, where) through Session::notify or ToolResult::messages, with a test on both the lossy and the clean input.

Fixed. A palette image without a whole ColorMap sets Raster::palette_missing (and Layout::palette_missing for COGs), and adding the layer notifies "its colour table is missing or short, so it is drawn in grey". The file reader also treats a declared palette without a table that way (it used to drop to plain grey before looking). Test: a_palette_without_its_table_says_so (with the table: no notice).

Code review

Scope: all 23 changed files, read against pr-context/AGENTS.md. There were no earlier review threads, so nothing was left out as already raised. Six inline comments are posted. One finding (file GeoTIFF bands, below) could not be anchored inline because its line is outside the diff, so it appears here only.

Bugs

  • The address's look is dropped when the overview hasn't landed (confidence: high, ~80%). The look is applied only when layer.data is already set. On the web that is never the case, so …/scene.tif#bands=5,3,2&range=… loses its look once the pixels arrive. land() (map/raster.rs:336) then replaces the style with default_for. Migrated projects in cog_tiles_to_rasters lose their saved bands and range the same way. Posted inline at engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3025.
  • File GeoTIFFs still drop bands past the colour ones (confidence: medium, ~70%). reader_all_bands is used only by the COG path. File reads still go through reader() (data/src/raster/geotiff.rs:994 and :1033). whole: true therefore shows fewer bands than the in-place layer, and the docs' "GeoTIFF files follow the same rule" is not true. This is a silent loss under AGENTS.md. Not posted inline because line 994 is outside the diff.
  • Semi-transparent layers double-blend while tiles are pending (confidence: medium, ~60%). draw_in_place draws the overview and then the part over it, both at opacity, so overlaps look more opaque. Posted at render/src/raster.rs:208.

Security

  • None found. Addresses go through crate::address::check before any read (tiles/src/cog.rs:412). The new reader hook sits in the tile cache, not in map.

Performance

  • The window is rebuilt on every draw (confidence: medium, ~55%). window() re-assembles every band, and stand_in rescans levels while tiles are missing. fits() recomputes chunk sets per level each frame. Posted at tiles/src/cog/raster.rs:232.
  • Native reads block the UI thread (confidence: medium, ~60%). reload() waits up to 120 s per overview. Project open calls it for each raster layer in turn (engine/src/project.rs:704). Posted at map/src/raster.rs:235.
  • The export loop (render/src/raster_export.rs:81) can wait up to three minutes per pending tile. Not posted; noted for the author.

Quality

  • The palette fallback is silent (confidence: medium, ~65%). A missing or short ColorMap falls back to grey with no notice (data/src/raster/geotiff.rs:61). Posted inline under AGENTS.md "never silent".
  • The geolibre test asserts opacity == 0.6 || opacity == 0.3, so it doesn't pin the behaviour. It is a quality point for the release quality pass.
  • panes.rs overwrites rows by index (rows.get_mut(0), rows.get_mut(3)). That will break if the row order changes. Also a quality point.

AGENTS.md

  • Default look changes for all rasters (confidence: medium, ~60%). A grey raster with four or more bands used to get RGB, and now gets band 1 in grey. This covers Zarr and GDAL layers, not just GeoTIFFs, and the PR doesn't say so. Posted at map/src/raster.rs:850.
  • No unwrap/expect/panic was found in new non-test code. Native-only std::time use is gated.
  • The docs and the PR body overstate the file-path parity described above.

…er on 429 and 503

- Hold the coarsest level as the overview only when it fits half the tile cache in 4,096 tiles;
refuse a larger image without overviews instead of reading it whole.
- Stand-ins fill only the tiles still missing; a tile's own no-data pixels stay empty.
- Keep an address's look (#bands=…&range=…) until the pixels land (browser, migrated projects);
a palette image stretched by a range is drawn in grey.
- Read a project's and a GeoLibre import's in-place overviews together, once each; migrate COG
tile layers before the tile list is cut.
- GeoTIFF files read every band, as COGs do; a palette image without its colour table says so.
- Scale alpha by its pixel type in both drawing paths; blend a see-through layer once while its
tiles load; read a wrapped 0–360° view's full width; keep the alpha band when a colour uses it.
- Raster to PMTiles waits for in-place tiles (two minutes at most) or refuses, never writing the
  overview in their place.
- A failed read waits a minute, or what its server's Retry-After says on a 429 or 503 (seconds or
an HTTP date, within 1 s to 1 h); the map draws again when the wait is over.

Never silent: the palette notice doesn't fire for layers that land later (confidence: ~75%).

add_raster reads palette_missing from layer.data, which only exists when the layer is added with its pixels. Layers added unread or still opening never reach this check: in-place layers in the browser (opening_in_place), a non-strict GeoLibre import (unread_in_place), projects opened through read_in_place, and migrated COG tile layers (cog_tiles_to_rasters). Their overview lands later, through land(), and palette_missing is then set without a notice. So a palette COG whose ColorMap is missing is drawn in grey with no message on those paths.

The existing notice is in the right place for layers added with data. The gap is the landing path. A possible fix is to check palette_missing in land() or after read_together, and notify once per layer with a count. Tests for the lossy and clean cases would cover this.

Fixed. Each raster layer now remembers whether its pixels' missing colour table was said (RasterLayer::palette_unsaid, reset when new pixels land), and Session::notice_landed_rasters says it for any layer that hasn't, one notice for all of them with their names. Session::run calls it after each command (a project opened, an import), and the app each frame (the browser, where pixels land later); add_raster marks the layers added with their pixels, so nothing is said twice. Test: a_palette_without_its_table_says_so_when_its_pixels_land (a project opened with a lossy palette COG: one notice, kept to one; with its table: none).

Possible retry storm once the failed-tile memory is full (confidence: ~40%, low severity).

When failed already holds MAX_FAILED entries, a new failure is not recorded. Its tile is removed from the tile map (Err(_) => t.map.remove(&key) in get_tile), so the next redraw sees it as neither kept nor loading, asks for it again, and fails again. Each redraw then re-requests every failing tile in view, with no Retry-After honoured for those tiles. This needs a very large view with thousands of failing tiles, so the risk is small, but the cap turns into unbounded requests instead of a bounded wait.

A simple fix is to evict the oldest or soonest-expiring entry when full, rather than dropping the new one.

Fixed. A full memory of failed tiles now makes room by dropping the entry whose wait ends soonest (remember_failed), so the newest failure always waits its turn, Retry-After included. Test: failed_tiles_make_room_for_the_newest.

Code review

This PR is large and mostly careful. Most of the diff follows the AGENTS.md rules: no unwrap in the new non-test code, hostile header input is bounded, and the new behaviour has tests both ways. I found two new issues and posted both inline. I did not build or run the tests; the findings come from reading the diff and the source.

Bugs

  • None confirmed as crashes or wrong output.

Security

  • No issues found. Remote Retry-After values are clamped to 3600 s, and the HTTP-date parser rejects malformed dates.

Performance

  • Nothing new. The per-frame window rebuild and the native two-minute blocking waits were already raised in earlier threads.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs (add_in_place): r["layer"].as_u64().unwrap_or(0) would name layer 0 in the response if the id were missing. Low risk, not posted.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent (~75%, posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/raster.rs:351): the palette-missing notice is only raised from add_raster when the layer already has its pixels. Layers that land later (browser in-place, non-strict GeoLibre imports, projects opened through read_in_place, migrated COG tile layers) never get it, so a palette COG without its ColorMap is drawn in grey silently on those paths. The earlier thread on geotiff.rs:61 asked for this notice. Part of it is now addressed, but not on the landing path.
  • Possible retry storm (~40%, posted inline at crates/tiles/src/cog/raster.rs:256): when the failed-tile memory is full, new failures are not remembered, so each redraw re-requests them. Low severity.

Earlier concerns left alone: 18 review threads were already on this PR. I did not re-raise any of them. Several were addressed in this push, including the migration order before truncation, the 16-bit alpha scaling, the look being dropped when pixels land later, and the wasm export that now returns an error instead of writing an overview-resolution archive. The remaining threads still describe code in this diff, and I did not find new evidence for them. Two I checked: the warp and project tools still announce when they run on the overview (imagery.rs:288, :420), so that path is not silent.

Minor follow-up Keep the alpha index in shown order when a colour band uses it.

1062-1063: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the alpha index in shown order when a colour band uses it.

When a look names the file's alpha band as a colour band, Pen.alpha is None and the tile is painted fully opaque. For example, a tile layer on a 4-band RGBA COG with look bands [1,2,4] keeps shown = [0,1,3], sets alpha: (shown.len() > colours).then_some(colours) to None, and paints transparent pixels opaque. Read the alpha value from its position in shown instead, so transparency is kept even when the alpha band is also a colour band.

Suggested fix
-        alpha: (shown.len() > colours).then_some(colours),
+        alpha: info.alpha.and_then(|a| shown.iter().position(|b| *b == a)),

2168-2173: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a GET test that sends Retry-After and checks the error text.

The GET failure path forwards the server's Retry-After value into the error text through with_retry_after. No test sends a GET response that carries this header. The existing GET tests serve a 503 without Retry-After and assert only http status: 503. The new assertions in this hunk call retry_after and retry_wait on constructed strings, so they do not exercise this forwarding. If a later change drops the header on this path, these tests still pass, and the retry wait falls back to its default.

Add a case after the existing GET assertions that serves a 503 with Retry-After: 30:

Suggested test
         assert_eq!(records[0].network.as_ref().unwrap().status, Some(503));
+ // A GET refusal that carries Retry-After keeps the wait in its error text.
+        let base = serve(vec!["HTTP/1.1 503 Unavailable\r\nRetry-After: 30\r\nContent-Length: 0\r\nConnection: close\r\n\r\n".into()]);
+        let url = format!("{base}/tiles/0/0/0.png");
+        assert_eq!(native::get(&native::agent(), &url, &[404]).unwrap_err(), "http status: 503 (retry after 30 s)");
// A download's absence names the address asked for, not the module's markers.

…room for failed tiles

- A palette image without its colour table is said once for its pixels whenever they land (a
project opened, an import, the browser), not only when added with them: the layer remembers
it was said, and the session says it after each command and each frame.
- A full memory of failed tiles drops the one whose wait ends soonest, so a new failure still
waits (Retry-After included) instead of being asked for at every draw.

Never silent: an in-place layer's overview is used for statistics and tools with no notice (confidence: ~60%).

Line 354 drops the overview for in-place layers, so the "showing a … overview" notice (lines 358-360) never fires for them. But layer.data for an in-place layer is the held overview, and the PR body says statistics, histograms and raster tools read it. So a raster tool run on one of these layers can return overview-resolution output with nothing said at the point of use. A file too large to hold whole gets that notice; an in-place COG, which is the same approximation, doesn't.

The Details pane discloses it ("In place, holding a W × H overview"), but that isn't a notice, and AGENTS.md requires lossy or approximate results to be reported through Session::notify or ToolResult::messages, one per kind with a count.

Suggested direction: keep a notice for in-place layers too, worded for what it affects (for example "read in place; statistics and tools use its W × H overview of the FW × FH raster"), and add a test for both the in-place and file cases. Tool-side messages would be the complete fix.

Fixed. An in-place layer now says it: "read in place: the map draws its W × H pixels as it needs them, while statistics, histograms and raster tools read a w × h overview". Added with its pixels, add_raster says it; when they land later (a project, an import, the browser), Session::notice_landed_rasters does, one notice for all such layers, once for each layer's pixels. Test: in_place_layers_say_their_overview_once.

Code review

I read the full diff, the staged metadata, and the 33 prior review threads. Most of what I checked is already raised there, so I've left those alone. I posted one new inline comment.

Bugs

  • Export can write overview pixels without a notice (confidence ~20%). In crates/render/src/raster.rs (about lines 143 and 199), the Err arms of draw_in_place fall back to the overview and return false. raster_export reads false as "complete", so an export could write overview-resolution tiles, against the docs' "nothing is written without them". The trigger looks rare, since info is normally already loaded once an overview exists. Not posted inline.

Security

  • None new. Notices already go through diagnostics::redact. Some new read errors and log::warn! lines carry the full address with its query, but the existing reload path does the same, so I didn't raise it.

Performance

  • None new. The per-frame stand_in cost and the uncached window were both raised in earlier threads.

Quality

  • Misplaced doc comment (confidence ~95%). In apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs (lines 573-586), the fetch_bytes doc comment now sits above the new refused function, so fetch_bytes loses its docs. This is a nit for the release quality pass; I did not post it inline.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent (confidence ~60%), posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/raster.rs:358. The overview notice is suppressed for in-place layers, but their statistics and tools read that overview, and nothing says so at the point of use.

Already raised (left alone)

I did not repeat 33 earlier threads that are still open or unanswered. The main ones that still stand in the code: the palette flag being file-wide, Float16/64-bit alpha_max, the look lost on save before pixels land, windows with failed tiles treated as complete (so exports can write holes), and the stand_in cost.

Minor follow-up Set error when a path-less in-place raster has no source.

115-119: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set error when a path-less in-place raster has no source.

A layer with in_place: true and no path reaches read_together, which calls reload. The early return at crates/map/src/raster.rs:320-321 returns Err("the raster has no source") without setting RasterLayer::error. The failure is only logged. The layer tooltip then reads The raster's data couldn't be read: with no reason. Set error in that branch, as the reader-missing branch already does.

Suggested fix

Cover the stacking order of two converted COG layers.

The fixture converts only one COG tile layer, Scene. The migration test checks only that Scene is the last layer. With one converted COG, the test cannot detect a change in the relative order of two or more converted COG layers. Add a second convertible COG tile layer with the same over anchor as Scene. Then assert the stacking order of the two converted rasters after project.openText. Keep the existing Scene and Series assertions.

Bound the failed-tile memory without evicting tiles still in their retry wait.

When a window holds more than 4,096 failing chunks, remember_failed drops the entry whose wait ends soonest. The retry wait for that tile may not have ended. The next draw asks for that tile again, and each failure redraws the map, so requests repeat while the server is still deferring them.

The trigger needs a COG with small tiles. A window can hold more than 4,096 chunks only when each tile covers about 4,096 pixels or fewer, such as 16×16 or 32×32. The parser accepts those sizes. The failures must cover that many chunks at once. No safe localized edit is established, so this comment gives no diff. A fix needs a different bound on the failure memory, such as a cap on requests per draw or a memory that does not discard unexpired waits.

Partly changed, with a reason. When the memory is full, entries whose wait is over now go first; only if every entry is still waiting does the one due soonest make room (it is asked for again a little early, once). Not remembering the new failure instead would make that tile be asked for at every draw, with no wait at all, which is the storm the earlier finding raised; refusing to ask for new tiles would stop the image loading. 4,096 tiles failing at once is far past a screen's worth.

@siiinc Understood. Removing expired entries first improves the policy. Keeping new failure records also avoids retrying those tiles on every draw.

One qualification: “a little early, once” is not guaranteed. If more than 4,096 failures remain active, repeated eviction and reinsertion can retry tiles early more than once. Small tiles also mean that chunk count does not directly measure screen coverage.

You have made the capacity trade-off explicit. I will not press for a broader retry-policy change in this PR. The saturation case remains a limitation, rather than a fully fixed concern.

- Say an in-place layer's statistics and tools read an overview, when added and when its pixels
land later; landing notices list at most five names, and the app gets a frame once pixels land.
- Exports refuse an in-place layer drawn from less than the image (the overview after a read
error, a view too large, stand-ins for tiles that couldn't be read).
- The overview budget counts whole decoded tiles; a full failed-tile memory clears expired waits
  before making room.
- The tile path keeps an alpha band drawn as a colour; alpha_max covers 64-bit and half floats.
- A grey image is a palette image only when the whole file is one or it has its ColorMap.
- A path-less in-place layer keeps its error; fetch_bytes has its doc comment back.
- Tests: a GET answering 503 with Retry-After, two converted COG layers keep their order, the
overview notice, and an unreadable in-place layer's export.

Never silent (AGENTS.md), confidence ~60%. A GeoTIFF read in place that fails here (project open or GeoLibre import) only goes to log::warn!. The layer keeps error, but that is shown only in the Details pane. The browser has the same gap: a failed overview read lands in land() as self.error and nothing notifies. Neither reaches Session::notify, which AGENTS.md requires (one notice per kind with a count).

Suggested direction: have read_together return its failures to the engine, and notify once with a count and the names, as notice_landed_rasters already does for palette rasters. Layers whose error is set and not yet said would be the natural trigger for the landing path too. Tests for the failed and clean cases would go alongside a_palette_without_its_table_says_so_when_its_pixels_land.

Fixed. A layer read in place whose read fails now keeps that it hasn't been said (RasterLayer::error_unsaid, reset at each failure), and Session::notice_landed_rasters says it as an error notice: ": couldn't be read in place: ", or one notice with the count and names for several. That covers a project, a GeoLibre import (both after read_together, at the end of the command) and the browser (each frame, once the read fails). Test: an_in_place_layer_that_cant_be_read_says_so.

Bug, low (~35%): wide_rgb is file-wide, so it also changes grey IFDs that were not patched. This is the same root cause as the open palette thread, applied to wide_rgb. Unpaletted sets wide_rgb when any IFD was patched, and this arm then matches every Multiband IFD with 3 or more samples. In a multi-IFD file where one IFD is RGB with a near-infrared band and another is an unpatched 8-band grey image, the grey IFD gets ColorHint::Rgb and its default look becomes red, green and blue instead of a band-1 stretch. The same applies to the Multiband arm in cog.rs (read_layout).

Suggested direction: record the patch per IFD, not per file, or check the IFD's own original PhotometricInterpretation the way the palette thread suggests. A test with a mixed-photometric file would pin it down.

Fixed. The patch scan now also notes a grey image of three or more bands, and Unpaletted::wide_rgb holds only when the file has none: in a file with both, a patched RGB image and a grey one look alike to the decoder, so neither is taken for colour (they open as band 1 in grey and the user picks the bands). Files of one kind are unchanged. Palette images got the same treatment earlier (all_palette). Test: a_file_mixing_grey_and_rgb_images_of_several_bands_stays_grey (an RGB+NIR file whose overview is grey).

Nits, grouped (left for the release quality pass, as AGENTS.md asks):

  • The new refused function is inserted between fetch_bytes's doc comment (lines 573–576) and fetch_bytes itself. fetch_bytes now has no doc comment, and refused inherits the text about split_range and omit. Moving refused above that doc block fixes it. crates/tiles/src/cache.rs (around 1538–1539) has the same pattern: retry_after_header took over the doc comment of refused.
  • Unpaletted::new and photometric_patches take a wide_rgb flag that is always true (the only caller is reader, geotiff.rs:710). The false path is dead, so the parameter can go.
  • In add_in_place (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs), r["layer"].as_u64().unwrap_or(0) names the wrong layer if the key is missing. Using and_then keeps the name unset instead.

All three fixed rather than left: fetch_bytes and cache.rs's refused have their doc comments back above them; photometric_patches and Unpaletted::new lose the always-true flag; add_in_place names the layer through and_then, so a missing id leaves the name unset.

Code review

I found two new issues worth raising and some quality nits. Both new issues are posted inline. I left 12 earlier concerns alone because prior threads already raise them and the code has not changed (the palette-flag root cause, the alpha Float16/UInt64 mapping, the failed-tile memory bound, the project-save look loss, the PMTiles retry wake, the http_date day check, the migration on reopen, and others), and I did not re-post any.

Bugs

  • wide_rgb is file-wide, so an unpatched grey multi-band IFD in a file that also has an RGB-with-extra IFD is read as RGB (crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs:1163, and the matching arm in cog.rs). Same root cause as the open palette thread, different symptom. Confidence ~35%, posted inline.

Security

  • No issues found. Retry-After values are clamped to 1 s to 1 h, and HTTP dates are parsed without panics.

Performance

  • No new issues beyond the already-declined window-rebuild concern.

Quality

  • Doc comments misplaced in apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs (refused took over fetch_bytes' doc) and crates/tiles/src/cache.rs (retry_after_header took over refused's doc). Dead wide_rgb = false path in Unpaletted::new. unwrap_or(0) in add_in_place. Grouped in one inline comment and left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Failed in-place reads during project open and GeoLibre import only log::warn!, and browser landing errors only set error. Neither goes through Session::notify (crates/engine/src/project.rs:948). Confidence ~60%, posted inline.

Checked and found consistent

  • Data-cube tile layers keep their time_urls, so the migration does not convert them.
  • The alpha-band read path matches draw_with.
  • PNG export waits on tiles_pending, as the PR body says.
  • Migration runs before the tile-layer truncation.
  • No unwrap/expect in new non-test code.
  • Wasm-only paths use web_time.

Conflicts kept both sides: a project read from its file and a map file imported open their plain COG
tile layers as rasters read in place and then count their label-setting losses. Both sides had added
`rustgis_map::source::wake`: main's (bump the generation, wake the app) stands in for the branch's
`landed`, and the branch's waker-only call is `another_frame`.

Memory: the no-overview fallback can hold about 800 MB of decoded values (confidence ~40%).

BUDGET counts f32 samples, not bytes (Tiles::samples is compared against it, and get_tile adds per_band * nb), so BUDGET / 2 here admits up to about 201M samples. That is about 805 MB of f32 natively, or about 335 MB in the browser. The assembled Raster is a second copy alongside the same chunks held in the tile cache, so peak use is larger still. The doc on this function, and the PR's "about two million values" for the overview, don't describe this path.

Suggestion: give the fallback its own byte-scale cap, for example FALLBACK_SAMPLES near 16M samples, and add a test where a level just over that cap is refused. Alternatively, keep the existing bound and correct the doc to say it counts samples and can reach about 800 MB.

Code review

I read the full diff and the prior review threads. The large majority of the logic checks out: the fetch batching, the tile-cache LRU, the retry and alarm bookkeeping, the look and palette handling, and the new non-panicking paths. I found one new concern and posted it inline. Most of what I looked at was already covered by earlier threads, so I've left those alone.

Bugs

  • None confirmed beyond the item below.

Security

  • None found. Addresses from project files go through check_url before any read, and Retry-After values are clamped to 1 s – 1 h.

Performance

  • crates/tiles/src/cog/raster.rs:51 (inline comment posted, confidence ~40%): the no-overview fallback admits up to BUDGET / 2 samples. BUDGET counts f32 samples, not bytes, so that is about 800 MB natively and about 335 MB in the browser, plus a second copy in the tile cache. The docs describe the overview as about two million values, which does not match this path.

Quality

  • Nothing new worth raising beyond the points already in the threads. Those are left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked: no new unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, web_time is used on the wasm-reachable paths, and new user-visible text goes through tl!/i18n::fmt. Notices are one per kind with counts.

Already raised, left alone: about 95 threads were already on the PR. I did not repeat any of them. The overview budget thread addresses over-budget behaviour, not the memory magnitude, so I raised that angle as new.

Not verified: I did not run the tests or build. The review is by reading the diff and the surrounding source only.

Bug, medium-low (confidence ~55%): the saved connection an address came from is not recorded on the in-place layer.

The old path passed connection into the map.addTiles request (the loop over "connection" that now only runs for dated addresses), so the tile layer kept tile.connection. service_logins uses that record: when the connection's login changes or the connection is removed, it rewrites the tile's address (service_logins.rs ~L445) and the raster layer's path (~L476), keyed on the layer's connection field. add_in_place takes no connection, and add_raster_after never sets one (cmd/raster.rs has no connection), so a COG added from a saved service connection is no longer rebound or cleared. Its login stays in the address until the layer is re-added.

Suggested direction: pass p["connection"] (when non-empty) into add_in_place and set layer.connection on the new raster layer, as the tile path did.

Checked rather than changed: a plain COG added by layer.addUrl from a saved connection does record it. layer.addUrl is one of service_logins::ADD_COMMANDS, so after the command the layers it added get connection from the connection parameter (or the one connection at the address's origin) by layer_address, which reads a raster layer's path; rebind_connection then rewrites raster paths keyed on that field, as you traced. Nothing in add_in_place has to set it, which is why cog_tiles_to_rasters sets it by hand (a project opening runs no command).

54a24d7 pins it down: a_cog_read_in_place_from_a_connection_records_it_and_follows_its_login adds a COG by address with connection from a logged-in header connection, and checks the layer is read in place with the connection recorded, its address bound to the login without the key, every request carrying the header, and, logged in again (a new binding), the address rebound and the layer read again through it (LoginFile now answers range and HEAD requests, which a read in place makes).

One thing the test turned up: the rebind reloaded a layer read in place waiting for it, up to two minutes on the desktop's own thread. Where the session doesn't wait for reads in place it now begins the read and lets it land as the map draws.

  • legends: map.setTiles sets them on any tile layer (tiles.rs ~L283 and ~L796, with no kind check), and a raster layer has no legend field.
  • connection: the login link the migration never carries over (see the note on layer.rs).

Suggested fix: carry connection onto the new layer next to visible, transparency and blend, and report the legends:

Suggested change
dropped.push("overlay");
if !t.legends.is_empty() {
dropped.push("legend");
}
if t.overlay {
dropped.push("overlay");
}

A test that sets a legend on a COG tile layer and checks the notice would pin it down.

Fixed in 54a24d7: the migration now counts a tile layer's legend among the settings a raster layer hasn't, so the notice says legend with the attribution, bounds, overlay and zoom range it already said. cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters gives Scene a legend and checks the notice. (The connection and anonymity were carried over in fb449b1.)

Doc, low (confidence ~70%): "isn't added" is only true where the session waits.

On the command line and in Python, add_in_place fails the command (overview_blocking(file)?). On the desktop app and in the browser (in_place_wait false, or wasm), the layer is added with opening_in_place and then reports "couldn't be read in place: … too large to hold as the layer's overview" once the read fails. Suggest saying so, for example: "is refused where the session waits (the command line, Python), and where it doesn't, the layer is added and says why it can't be read."

Fixed in 54a24d7, as you suggest: the guide says a file whose smallest image is too large to hold is refused where the session waits for it (the command line, Python), and that the desktop app and the browser add the layer, which says why it can't be read.

Code review

I read the whole diff (41 files) against the staged prior threads, and checked the surrounding code where a finding depended on it. The three findings below are new; I checked them against the 96 earlier threads and none repeats one of them. I left all 96 threads alone, since none of the concerns they raise has changed in a way that calls for a new comment. The non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe. I also ruled out an unchecked tile index in stand_in: the parser caps each level at 4M tiles, so it cannot overflow from a parsed file.

Bugs

  • The in-place COG layer does not record the saved connection its address came from (layer.rs:3391). Service-login maintenance therefore no longer rebinds or clears it when that connection's login changes or the connection is removed. Confidence ~55%.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • None new. The per-frame allocations in draw_in_place were raised before and left as they are.

Quality

  • Nothing new to raise beyond the items above. Naming and comment nits are left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent: the migration drops legends (and connection) from COG tile layers with no notice (tiles.rs:604). Confidence ~65%.
  • Docs: data-formats.md:131 says an oversized COG "isn't added". That is true only where the session waits; the desktop and the browser add the layer and report the failure. Confidence ~70%.

Conflicts kept both sides: `add_cog` takes main's `probed` flag (a header just read is waited for if
the tile cache was emptied since, so the layer is framed) beside the branch's `strict`, and the
in-place add uses it the same way, answering why the map wasn't moved when the header can't be read;
`Session::run` keeps main's plugin download bookkeeping around the command and the branch's overview
retry after it; the app's frame runs main's `pluginstart::run_again` and then the branch's retry and
notices; the Add Data From URL parameters keep the branch's `cube` and main's `request`. Main's
probed test meets the branch's waiting session, which fails the add of an address that can't be read.

…e series draws its table, and the browser export says what to do

CodeRabbit's review of the merge of main:
- `cog_tiles_to_rasters` copies the tile layer's `connection` and `anonymous` onto the raster layer it
becomes, so a project reopened reads it through the connection it recorded (opengeos#1223) rather than asking
to choose among those matching its origin.
- `Info::palette` reads `layout.palette`, the table the header keeps apart from its colour hint since the
window read (opengeos#1204): the tiles of a palette file's own look are coloured by it, as `paint` always could.
`with_stretch` answers that look without a read and without keeping a stretch (a look of its bands
would take it for its own). The notice for a dated series or a cube no longer says its tiles are grey.
- The browser exporter's error, and both guides, say the export asked for the tiles still missing and to
export again once they are in: a map draw doesn't read what the export needs beyond the view.
- The two tile-cache tests that arm or clear the process-wide alarm hold a test-only lock.

Tests: `a_palette_images_own_look_has_its_table`; `cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters` checks
the connection and anonymity carried.

Main merged (5b0c6aa) and CodeRabbit's review of 3aff85d answered (fb449b1)

Merge. Main's 20 newer commits are in, with four conflicts resolved keeping both sides: add_cog takes main's probed flag beside the branch's strict (a header just read is waited for if the tile cache was emptied since, and the in-place add answers why the map wasn't moved when the header can't be read), Session::run keeps main's plugin download bookkeeping and the branch's overview retry, the app's frame runs pluginstart::run_again and then the branch's retry and notices, and the Add Data From URL parameters keep both cube and request. Main's a_probed_cog_is_framed_after_the_cache_forgets_it meets the branch's waiting session, which fails the add of an address that can't be read, and is adapted.

CodeRabbit's four open threads, each answered in its thread:

  • A migrated COG tile layer dropped its connection (cmd/tiles.rs): the raster layer it becomes keeps connection and anonymous, so a reopened project reads it through the connection it recorded.
  • Palette tile layers drew in grey (cog.rs): Info::palette reads layout.palette, where the header has kept the table since the window read; a palette file's own look needs no stretch, and none is kept for it. In this PR that reaches the dated series, cubes and embeddings that stay tile layers; a plain palette GeoTIFF is a raster layer drawn with its colour table. The grey notice is gone.
  • The browser export instruction (raster_export.rs, both guides): the export asked for the tiles still missing; export again once they are in, a large one over a few tries.
  • Two tile-cache tests shared the process-wide alarm: they hold a test-only lock.

The older thread on the failed-tile memory stays as CodeRabbit left it: a stated limitation of the 4,096-entry bound, not a defect.

Tests: a_palette_images_own_look_has_its_table; cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters checks the connection carried. cargo xtask ci: 4,313 tests pass, 0 fail, layers ok; the wasm build checks.

Format version not advanced (AGENTS.md "Saved files", confidence ~70%). in_place is a new raster-layer key, and RasterLayer has no deny_unknown_fields, so an older RustGIS ignores it. It then reads the COG address as an ordinary raster path (a whole-file download) and saves the layer again without in_place. docs/maintaining.md says a format's version goes up when an older reader would lose or misread something, and FORMAT in crates/engine/src/project.rs is still 1. The pending look and restyle keys have the same exposure. Either advance FORMAT (older RustGIS then refuses these projects, as designed), or say in the PR why an older reader can't misread them. The PR body currently says this hasn't been tried.

Tried in this round, with main's rustgis-cli (3225fd6) on a project this branch saved with a layer read in place: it ignores in_place, shows the layer as missing (a plain web address isn't a raster path it reads; nothing is fetched), keeps the path, and saves the project again without in_place. Opened here again, that layer was a plain raster with a web address: missing too. So yes, the loss the maintaining guide's rule names, with FORMAT still 1 (look and restyle, kept only until the pixels land, go the same way).

Two things in 54a24d7. The loss is closed where this PR can close it: a raster layer whose path is a plain http(s):// address, from no saved connection, opens as read in place when in_place is missing, since no RustGIS reads such a path any other way (a login or S3 wrapper is downloaded whole, as is a connection's address once its login is made again; a GeoTIFF downloaded whole keeps its bytes, not its address); a_project_an_older_rustgis_saved_again_reads_its_cog_in_place opens one without the key and checks it reads. The round trip through an older RustGIS then loses a pending look at most. And the description's Project format paragraph now says what was tried and puts the version to the maintainers, as the project format is on CONTRIBUTING's coordinate-first list: accept format 2 when reading now and write it (for projects holding a layer read in place) from the next release, per the guide's order, or bump FORMAT now. Either is a small change here once they say.

Still open from an earlier thread, now with new context (never silent, confidence ~60%). overlay is reported here now, but a COG tile layer's legends (TileLayer::legends, crates/map/src/tiles.rs:178) are still dropped without a notice. Suggested addition:

Fixed in 54a24d7: the migration now counts a tile layer's legend among the settings a raster layer hasn't, so the notice says legend with the attribution, bounds, overlay and zoom range it already said. cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters gives Scene a legend and checks the notice. Still open from an earlier thread; this is now a regression (confidence ~65%). A plain COG added by address from a saved service connection used to become a tile layer that kept connection, so service_logins rebound it when the login changed. Now add_in_place takes no connection, and the raster layer is saved without one. A login change or removal therefore no longer rewrites its address, and it keeps the stale login until re-added. Pass connection (when non-empty) into add_in_place and set it on the new layer, as cog_tiles_to_rasters already does.

Code review

I read the full diff, the 103 prior review entries, and the code around the new paths. Most of the risky areas (overflow, stalled reads, retry storms, desktop blocking, the notices) were already raised and answered, so I left those alone. The three comments below are the ones I could not find in an existing thread, or that still stand after the author's changes.

Bugs

  • None new that I could confirm. I checked the fetch-queue batching in fetch_all_with, the lock ordering around tile_landed and notify_at, and the alpha-band rule shared by draw_in_place and draw_with. All held up.

Security

  • None. The new URLs go through check_url. Retry-After text is bounded and parsed safely. Nothing reads from the environment.

Performance

  • No new items beyond the per-frame window and stand-in costs already discussed in prior threads.

Quality

  • None raised.

AGENTS.md

  • Format version not advanced (confidence ~70%). A raster layer's new in_place key is written, but FORMAT in project.rs is still 1. RasterLayer has no deny_unknown_fields, so an older RustGIS silently ignores in_place, then re-saves the layer as a plain path. docs/maintaining.md requires a version bump in exactly this case. Inline comment posted on crates/map/src/raster.rs:28.
  • Legends still dropped in the COG tile-layer migration (confidence ~60%, earlier thread, still present). overlay is now reported, but legends are not. Inline comment with a suggestion posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/tiles.rs:603.
  • Saved connection not recorded for a COG added by address (confidence ~65%, earlier thread, still present, now a regression). Previously the tile layer kept connection, so the layer was rebound when the login changed. add_in_place does not take or set it. Inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3717.

Already raised, not repeated: 100 prior threads on this PR were left alone. Of those, most are resolved and answered by the author. Two earlier items I re-raised above because the code changed around them and they are still unfixed.

…raw before it asks again, and a project an older RustGIS saved again reads its COG in place

- The tile cache keeps every wait asked for (the earliest 1,024), not the earliest alone: the draw when an earlier wait is over may not revisit a later read's gate (a style kept whole while its elevation source waits). `generation()` takes out every wait that is over at once and asks the app again for the earliest left on each draw, since egui's `request_repaint_after` lasts one frame and a draw before the deadline used it up. Tests for both; the tile test takes the cache's turn too.
- The engine's header retry test asserts what the session sees (the add fails saying when to ask again, nothing is sent for the refusal, and a draw once the wait is over reads the header again, answered), with no alarm hook installed; that no read starts while the wait lasts, and that the alarm is armed, is checked in the tiles crate, where the gate's state and the alarm are read under the cache's turn and the alarm tests' turn.
- A project an older RustGIS saved again (it didn't know `in_place`: it showed the layer as missing and saved it without the key) reads its cloud-optimised GeoTIFF in place again: a raster layer whose path is a plain web address, from no saved connection, is read no other way.
- The COG tile-layer migration says a legend is dropped, with the attribution, bounds, overlay and zoom range.
- A login made again reads a raster layer read in place again without waiting for it where the session doesn't wait (the desktop), so it doesn't hold the window; a test pins that a COG added from a saved connection records it, its address bound to the login, and follows the login.
- The guide says a file without a small enough image is refused where the session waits, and added, saying why, elsewhere.

Round on fb449b1 (CodeRabbit's four findings and its follow-up on the alarm tests, and the github-actions review's three), fixed in 54a24d7:

  • Later waits and early draws. The tile cache keeps every wait asked for (the earliest 1,024), not the earliest alone, and each draw asks the app again for the earliest pending, since egui's request_repaint_after lasts one frame. Tests for both (a_later_wait_isnt_lost_behind_an_earlier_one, a_draw_before_a_wait_is_over_asks_for_it_again).
  • Alarm tests. The engine's header retry test asserts what the session sees (the add fails saying when to ask again, nothing is sent for the refusal, and a draw once the wait is over reads the header again, answered) and installs no hook; what needs the gate's state is now cog::tests::a_header_refused_with_retry_after_has_the_map_drawn_again_then in the tiles crate (no read starts while the wait lasts, and an alarm is armed within it on each draw), under the cache's turn and the alarm tests' turn; the tile test takes turn() as well.
  • Migration. A tile layer's legend counts among the settings dropped; the migration test checks it.
  • Connection. Checked rather than changed: layer.addUrl records the connection after the command (it is one of ADD_COMMANDS), and a login rebinds raster paths keyed on it; a_cog_read_in_place_from_a_connection_records_it_and_follows_its_login pins it. The test turned up that a login made again reloaded a layer read in place waiting for it on the desktop's thread: it now lands as the map draws there.
  • Guide. Where a file without a small enough image is refused (the command line, Python) and where it is added and says why (the desktop app, the browser).
  • Format version. Tried with main's rustgis-cli: an older RustGIS shows the layer as missing and saves the project again without in_place. Where this PR can close that, it does: a raster layer whose path is a plain web address, from no saved connection, opens as read in place when the key is missing (a_project_an_older_rustgis_saved_again_reads_its_cog_in_place). The version itself is in the description's Project format paragraph for the maintainers: accept format 2 when reading now and write it from the next release, or bump now.

Gate: 4,318 tests pass, 0 failed; clippy, layers and wasm ok.

Re-raising the palette-overview thread on AGENTS.md's never-silent rule (confidence ~55%).

The reply says the full image decides the palette question, and that the test a_palette_overview_under_a_grey_full_image_is_read_grey_as_the_full_image_is pins the grey reading. That answers which reading is consistent, not the notice. The test asserts !s.notices.iter().any(|n| n.text.contains("colour table")), so an overview whose header says Palette, with no ColorMap, is drawn as grey indices with nothing said.

AGENTS.md: "A reader … that drops, truncates or approximates data says what, how much and where," and "Test both ways". Here the overview's own PhotometricInterpretation contradicts the full image, and the layer shows indices as grey values. The same case already gets a notice when the full image is palette ("drawn in grey, without its colour table"), so the silence is specific to this branch.

Suggested direction: keep the full-image rule for the look, but add a notice when the overview is palette-tagged (or its colour table is missing) and the full image isn't, naming the layer. The test should then assert the notice, not its absence.

Code review

I reviewed the full 6,871-line diff against the staged AGENTS.md. Most of the new code has already been through about 30 open review threads and a long series of fixes, so this pass mostly confirmed those fixes and found one new point.

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found in the code I read. I checked the window and stand-in assembly, the fetch_all batching (iterative, with an asking flag, so no unbounded recursion), the alarm and backoff logic, the Retry-After and HTTP-date parsing, and the in-place layer state machine. Header-driven arithmetic in stand_in and assemble is bounded by MAX_TILE_SAMPLES and the take_tiles allowance, so it can't overflow.

Security

  • Nothing new. Error text parsed back by retry_after is clamped to 1 s–1 h, and check_url runs before a read.

Performance

  • Low confidence (~35%): while tiles are arriving, window() reassembles the whole window and reruns stand_in on every draw, and draw_in_place re-queries cog::info and fits per level. This is per-frame work proportional to the window's pixels, with no caching. Worth measuring on a 4K view before release.

Quality

  • Nothing new. The i18n gap in engine notices follows the existing convention, since the engine has no tl!/i18n use.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent (~55%), inline comment posted at crates/data/src/raster/cog.rs:335. The author's reply defends the grey reading by consistency with the full image. The test a_palette_overview_under_a_grey_full_image_is_read_grey_as_the_full_image_is asserts that no notice is made, which doesn't meet "says what … approximates data".
  • The Details-pane strings use tl!, and the panes test is covered.

Already raised and left alone: I didn't re-post any of the about 30 open, non-outdated threads, including the unanswered FORMAT version concern (crates/map/src/raster.rs:28), the export blocking the window (raster_export.rs:100), and the 800 MB fallback cap (cog/raster.rs:51). I re-raised only the palette point, because its answer doesn't address the rule.

Code review

I found no new bugs, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations in the changed lines, so I posted no inline comments. Coverage was partial: I read the new crates/tiles/src/cog/raster.rs in full, the palette/RGB IFD walker in geotiff.rs, fetch_all in cog.rs, the retry-wait parsing in failure.rs and cache.rs, and read_together, begin_in_place_read and land in map/src/raster.rs. I grepped every added line for unwrap, expect, panic!, unsafe, println!, eprintln!, and slice indexing. The unwrap/expect/panic! hits are all in test code. I did not read render/src/raster.rs draw_in_place, the S3 connection changes, or apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs line by line.

Bugs: none new at 40% confidence or higher.

Security: none new. The unclamped (retry after N s) read-back raised earlier is fixed: cache::retry_after clamps to 1 s–1 h.

Performance

  • window() in crates/tiles/src/cog/raster.rs allocates a String per missing chunk (file.to_string() in the ask.retain and failed_now closures). It also scans the whole failed() map on every draw. Both are bounded by MAX_FAILED and the chunk count, so this is minor. (confidence ~30%)

Quality (for the release quality pass, per AGENTS.md)

  • read_overview in cog/raster.rs looks up got.get(c) by chunk index, but fetch_all returns filter_map-compacted results. The lookup is correct only because wanted is 0..n and every slot is Some on success. A short comment there would stop a future change from breaking it. (confidence ~35%)

AGENTS.md: no violations found in the changed lines. The new Details-pane strings use tl!, and the new notices go through Session::notify, one per kind with a count.

Already raised: about 27 distinct concerns sit in roughly 32 open, unresolved threads, and I left all of them alone. I did not re-verify each one's claim. About 100 further threads are outdated or resolved, and I did not re-raise any of them. The palette-overview thread on crates/data/src/raster/cog.rs:335 is still disputed. The author's reply (the full image decides) answers which reading is consistent, but not the silent-notice point, so I left it to that thread.
