Step 2 of #1252: the first two items, Kriging and IDW. It also carries the two leftovers from #1254's last review.

Change

  • crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:
    • for_each_row(rows, threads, scratch, f): a raster tool's output rows (chunks_mut of its bands), each written where it lies by whichever thread takes it, one at a time. The output is held once, as on one thread.
    • threads_for_rows(rows, work, scratch_bytes) gives one thread below MIN_ROW_WORK (200,000 units of work, here cell-point pairs, about 5 ms) and in the browser. It never gives more threads than rows, more than 16, or more than SCRATCH_BUDGET (256 MiB of per-thread scratch beyond one thread's) allows.
    • The core now runs over indices (try_each_on), and try_map_on wraps it. Buffer and Select by Location behave as before.
    • A drop guard (StopOnPanic) sets the stop flag when a thread panics, so the others stop after the items they are making. Before, they made the rest for nothing. The panic still reaches the caller.
  • idw (rasterops.rs) and kriging (kriging.rs) make their rows on for_each_row. Each thread has its own distance buffer, and for kriging its own KrigingBuffers.
  • Select by Location's notice for selecting features without geometry now has its own test.

Same output

Each cell is computed exactly as before, from its own freshly filled buffers, so the surfaces are the same bit for bit.

  • New tests compare 1, 2, 7 and 16 threads bit for bit: IDW from every point and from the nearest 8, and kriging's prediction and variance bands.
  • The release CLI's GeoTIFFs for every case in the table below are byte-identical to main's (cmp). Peak memory is unchanged too: 22.8 MB against main's 22.5 MB for the 920 × 400 case.

Measurements

Synthetic data: random points over Switzerland (5.9–10.5° E, 45.8–47.8° N) with values from a smooth surface plus noise, in GeoPackages. Extent and cell size were given explicitly, power 2, all points. Times are wall clock in seconds, including loading and writing the GeoTIFF. Machine: Xeon Silver 4114, 40 threads.

Case main this PR QGIS 4.2.3 qgis:idwinterpolation GDAL 3.10 gdal_grid invdist

Kriging, 1,000 points, 230 × 100 0.28 0.08 (no tool) (no tool)
  • QGIS was timed inside one QGIS Python process. Its IDW runs on one thread.
  • QGIS has no kriging in this install, which has no SAGA provider, so kriging is compared with main only.
  • GDAL is still faster, but not because of threads. On one core, gdal_grid takes 0.19 s for the 10,000-point case and RustGIS 6.0 s. Its power-2 path works on squared distances. RustGIS takes a square root and a powf for each cell-point pair. A power-2 path here would change output bits, so it belongs in its own change.
  • Values: RustGIS differs from QGIS and GDAL by 7.7 on average (maximum 74) over a 2,100 range. RustGIS measures east-west distance on the ground (scaled by cos latitude). QGIS and GDAL treat degrees as planar. QGIS and GDAL agree with each other to 0.004.

Not in this PR

  • Raising MAX_IDW_WORK and MAX_KRIGING_WORK on desktop. The kriging limit keeps 1,000 points to about 23,000 cells.
  • The power-2 IDW kernel.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Raster interpolation now processes rows in parallel where appropriate, with worker limits based on workload and memory needs.
    • Single-threaded and multi-threaded interpolation produces bit-for-bit identical results.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of geometry-less selectors in location-based selection, with a message identifying the issue.

IDW and Ordinary Kriging make each raster row on its own, so their
rows now go through parallel::map_rows (opengeos#1252): rows taken one at a
time by up to 16 threads, the calling thread among them, above
MIN_ROW_WORK cell-point pairs, and on one thread in the browser. Each
thread has its own distance buffer, and for kriging its own
KrigingBuffers. The surfaces are the same, bit for bit, as on one
thread.

The helper now runs over indices (try_each_on), which try_map_on wraps,
and a drop guard sets the stop flag when a worker panics, so the other
threads stop after the items they are making. Select by Location's
notice for selecting features without geometry has a test.

On 40 threads, IDW of 10,000 points onto 230 x 100 cells takes 0.55 s
instead of 6.1 s, and of 1,000 points onto 920 x 400 cells 0.88 s
instead of 9.9 s.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

IDW and kriging now process raster rows through shared parallel worker code. The change adds row-based thread selection, per-worker scratch buffers, and tests for panic handling and bit-for-bit output across thread counts. It also adds a selectByLocation test for a selector without geometry.

Changes: Raster row parallelism

Layer / File(s) Summary
Indexed row worker framework
crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs
The worker code selects row thread counts based on work, row count, available cores, and scratch limits. It processes rows with worker-local scratch. The indexed item worker uses index ranges and stops taking work after a panic. Tests cover row placement, empty rows, thread limits, and panic handling.
IDW row processing
crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
idw delegates to a private implementation that processes rows with per-worker distance buffers. Tests compare single-thread output with output using 2, 7, and 16 threads.
Kriging row processing
crates/analysis/src/kriging.rs
kriging delegates to a private implementation that processes rows with per-worker distance and solver buffers. It writes predictions and variances into preallocated rows. Tests compare both bands across thread counts.

Location selector test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Geometry-less selector coverage
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs
A test checks the selected row and reported counts when one selector lacks geometry.

Code review

I read the full diff (4 files), the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in kriging.rs, parallel.rs and tools.rs. I found no correctness bugs. Three minor items are posted inline. I could not build, run tests or clippy, and I did not reproduce the PR's byte-identical CLI comparisons, so those claims are unverified.

Bugs: none found.

  • Each kriging cell's buffers are fully rewritten before use (a_mat in ordinary_kriging_point, and solve_linear_system writes every x[i] before reading it), so the bit-identical claim holds regardless of which thread takes a row.
  • The panic guard, the caller's participation in the work, the error ordering, and the threads <= 1 and empty-input paths all check out.
  • The Select by Location test matches the existing notice text in tools.rs.

Security: none found.

Performance:

  • rasterops.rs:450 and kriging.rs:380: concat() on per-row vectors roughly doubles peak output memory for the largest allowed grids. Low-to-medium confidence, a decision rather than a required fix. (Posted inline.)

Quality:

  • parallel.rs:15: the MIN_ROW_WORK comment says "a few milliseconds". The PR's own timings put 2M pairs near 50 ms. Medium confidence. (Posted inline.)
  • parallel.rs:314: the stop assertion is conditional on r.is_err(), so the panic test can pass without checking the stop behaviour. Medium confidence. (Posted inline.)
  • Coverage: the automatic threshold path (threads = None) is never exercised by a test. The tests pass Some(n). Low confidence.

AGENTS.md: no violations found. No new unwrap/expect in non-test code, no unsafe, no wasm regressions (threads_for_rows returns 1 in the browser), and no new silent losses. Test-only unwrap is consistent with the existing tests.

Prior reviews: none existed on this PR, so none were skipped.

Add a row-position assertion to the IDW coverage.

The new equivalence test compares one-thread and multi-thread output from the same row closure. A row-coordinate error in that closure appears in both results, so the test still passes. The existing value checks also accept output where every row uses row 0. Add an assertion that checks a cell in a row far from row 0 against an independently computed value.

Add a raster value check at distinct row coordinates.

The new test compares kriging_on output across thread counts. It passes whenever every row produces the same result, including when the shared row callback reuses one row's coordinates. No existing raster test checks cell placement, so a row-coordinate regression in kriging_on would not fail the suite. Add a check that compares selected cells with ordinary_kriging_point evaluated at independently computed cell centers.

Cover thread placement in the row-order test, but avoid a thread-ID count assertion.

The new test checks only returned values, so a map_rows that runs every row on the calling thread still passes. The test does not detect loss of parallel execution.

A check on thread placement needs a different design than "more than one thread ID":

  • The calling thread also takes rows, so workers do not have to run any row.
  • Each row is trivial, so one worker can take all 37 rows before another worker starts. Allowing "no worker starts" does not cover this case.
  • Worker spawns can fail and are skipped, so every row can run on the calling thread even when threads is greater than one.

Because scheduling decides these outcomes, no thread-ID assertion is deterministic. Choose the check deliberately before adding it.

…hreshold

Threads for a raster tool's rows are capped so that their scratch (a
buffer per point for IDW and kriging) stays within 256 MiB beyond one
thread's, so millions of points don't reserve a copy on each of 16
threads. MIN_ROW_WORK drops to 200,000 cell-point pairs, about 5 ms;
the old comment understated it tenfold. The rows go into the surface
one at a time instead of through concat, so it isn't held twice. The
panic test asserts the panic unconditionally.

On the review summary's coverage note, that no test exercises the automatic threshold path (threads = None): threads_for_rows has its own test, for the work threshold, the row bound and the scratch budget. The equality tests pin the thread count on purpose, so they run threaded on any machine. I'm leaving it as it is.

Bugs

  • Memory peak doubles, and the comments say otherwise (re-raised, confidence high). map_rows returns every row before the copy loop starts, and the output buffer is preallocated at full size. The "not held twice" comments in rasterops.rs:452 and kriging.rs:381 are wrong. At the 16M-cell cap, IDW peaks near 128 MB (main: 64 MB) and kriging near 256 MB (main: 128 MB). The earlier thread's reply said this was fixed ("held once plus a row"), but this head still has the pre-fix code. Inline comments are posted on both lines.

No other new bugs found. I checked the following and they look correct:

  • Per-thread KrigingBuffers and near reuse: ordinary_kriging_point rewrites every entry it reads, so output does not depend on which thread ran a row.
  • The panic guard (StopOnPanic) and the failed flag handling in try_each_on.
  • Saturating arithmetic in threads_for_rows, and the SCRATCH_BUDGET cap.

Security

  • None found. The change is internal arithmetic and threading, and the input bounds (MAX_PIXELS, MAX_IDW_WORK, MAX_KRIGING_WORK) still run before any thread starts.

Performance

  • Threads are spawned per call (up to 16, 8 MB stacks). The MIN_ROW_WORK gate and the browser path keep small jobs on one thread, so this is acceptable. Confidence: medium.

Quality

  • The PR description is out of date. It says MIN_ROW_WORK is 2,000,000 (the code has 200,000), and it does not mention SCRATCH_BUDGET. Confidence: high.
  • Nit: kriging allocates two new Vecs per row inside the closure. A reused buffer would avoid that. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, or panic in non-test code. unwrap/panic appear only in tests, which the crate-root deny allows. Confidence: high.
  • Layering and wasm: the wasm path returns one thread before any threading runs, and std::thread only appears in code that the wasm gate skips. Confidence: high.
  • The hostile_params_never_panic path still holds, since the new code only adds guarded arithmetic. Confidence: medium.

Prior reviews

  • Four earlier threads. Three are fixed in the code: the threshold value, the unconditional test assertion, and the scratch budget. I re-raised the fourth (memory) because the code does not match its reply.
  • Left alone: 3 concerns.

Minor follow-up Process IDW rows in blocks or write them directly to the surface.

415-415: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

Process IDW rows in blocks or write them directly to the surface.

The IDW path sends each raster row as its own work item. Each row returns a separate Vec<f32>, and try_each_on then sorts every (usize, R) pair before it collects the rows. A permitted narrow raster, such as one column by 16,000,000 rows, can therefore need many times the surface size in transient memory and extra sort time. Process rows in blocks, or write each row directly into the output.

Nitpick Add a test that the selector returns more than one thread for eligible work.

Add a test that the selector returns more than one thread for eligible work.

Every selector assertion in rows_come_back_in_their_order_one_at_a_time holds when threads_for_rows returns one. No test asserts a thread count on the automatic threads = None path, and the equality tests pass explicit counts. A regression to one thread for eligible work would pass every test.

The suggested guard also needs a wasm32 check. threads_for_rows returns one when cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") is true, so the assertion can fail on a wasm32 target that reports more than one core.

Suggested test addition
         assert!(threads_for_rows(100, usize::MAX, SCRATCH_BUDGET) <= 2);

map_rows collected every row before they were copied into the surface,
so a raster was held about twice over, and a tall grid of one-cell rows
made a vector per row. parallel::for_each_row instead hands each thread
its next output row (chunks_mut of the bands, taken under a lock), so
the surfaces are held once, as on one thread. A worker's panic stops
the others and reaches the caller, as in try_map. try_each_on takes
its batch of 16 again, since only try_map_on uses it.

Code review

I found no correctness or security bugs. I checked the thread split, the panic path and the row writes. Output is held once, bounds are guarded, and w and h are at least 1, so chunks_mut(w) cannot panic. The two inline comments are style and performance points, not defects.

Bugs: none found. Confidence in the absence of bugs: high. I could not compile, run tests, or check the timings, so these rest on reading the code.

Security: none found.

Performance

  • for_each_row takes a shared mutex once per row. On narrow, tall grids the lock cost can cancel the gain, and the doc comment's "costly enough to be taken one at a time" does not hold there. Batching rows per lock would fix it. (Confidence: low-medium; inline comment posted at crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:72.)

Quality

  • try_map_on now uses &items[i] in non-test code. It is in bounds by construction, but AGENTS.md asks for get() over indexing. (Confidence: medium; inline comment posted at crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs:113.)
  • The MIN_ROW_WORK doc says "cell-point pairs", but kriging's work unit also includes the k³/3 system cost. The constant is still conservative, so this is only a doc nit.

AGENTS.md

  • The two new tests use panic! and unwrap(). Both are allowed in tests by clippy.toml, so no violation.
  • The changes are below apps/, so the wasm path is preserved through cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32"). Nothing new needs translating or layering review.
  • Select by Location's notice gets a test only. Its text already exists in tools.rs.

Nitpick Add a positive assertion for automatic thread selection in threadsforrows.

328-328: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a positive assertion for automatic thread selection in threads_for_rows.

The assertions at parallel.rs:327-331 accept a result of 1 for every input. The explicit-count equality tests for IDW and kriging pass explicit thread counts, so they never reach the automatic selector. A change that makes threads_for_rows return 1 for eligible work would keep the output identical and remove the row parallelism this PR adds. No test in the suite would fail. The guarded assertion below fails in that case and stays valid on single-core hosts and on wasm32:

🧪 Suggested test addition
         assert!(threads_for_rows(3, usize::MAX, 0) <= 3);
+ // Eligible work on several cores selects more than one thread.
+        if !cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") && std::thread::available_parallelism().map_or(1, |n| n.get()) > 1 {
+            assert!(threads_for_rows(100, MIN_ROW_WORK, 0) > 1);
+        }

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs at line 328:
Add a guarded positive assertion in the `threads_for_rows` tests that eligible
work selects more than one thread when the host has multiple cores. Skip the
assertion on wasm32 and when `available_parallelism` reports one core or fails,
so single-core environments remain valid.
Nitpick Add a test-only check on the thread count passed to foreachrow.

358-358: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a test-only check on the thread count passed to for_each_row.

kriging_on passes its threads argument to crate::parallel::for_each_row at crates/analysis/src/kriging.rs:358. The equality test at crates/analysis/src/kriging.rs:455-468 compares only band bits. Output is bit-identical at every thread count, so a kriging_on that forwarded 1 regardless of threads would still pass. The shared-helper tests in parallel.rs do not cover this caller.

Record the threads value that for_each_row receives in a test-only thread-local. Assert that the recorded value equals each requested count (1, 2, 7, and 16). The recorded value is the requested count, so the check does not depend on whether workers spawn. Record it at function entry. The test thread calls both functions synchronously, so the thread-local stays isolated when tests run in parallel.

This check confirms the requested count reaches the row executor. It does not show that rows ran on worker threads. The threads = None path is separate and is not covered here.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/kriging.rs at line 358:
Add test-only recording of the thread count received at entry to for_each_row,
then update the kriging_on test to assert that requested counts 1, 2, 7, and 16
reach the executor. Keep the check focused on the explicit thread-count path; do
not infer worker-thread execution or cover the None path.
